¹ Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of the Persians, came up Ezra, the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

⁴ Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, and take account of the money that is brought into the house of the Lord, which they that keep the door have collected of the people.

⁸ And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

¹⁸ And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the high priest, and Zephaniah the second in order, and the three doorkeepers.

⁴ Eleazar begot Phinehas, Phinehas begot Abishua; ⁵ Abishua begot Bukki, and Bukki begot Uzzi; ⁶ Uzzi begot Zerahiah, Zerahiah begot Meraioth; ⁷ Meraioth begot Amariah, and Amariah begot Ahitub; ⁸ Ahitub begot Zadok, and Zadok begot Ahimaaz; ⁹ Ahimaaz begot Azariah, and Azariah begot Johanan; ¹⁰ Johanan begot Azariah (he ministered as priest in the house which Solomon built in Jerusalem); ¹¹ Azariah begot Amariah, and Amariah begot Ahitub; ¹² Ahitub begot Zadok, and Zadok begot Shallum; ¹³ Shallum begot Hilkiah, and Hilkiah begot Azariah; ¹⁴ Azariah begot Seraiah, and Seraiah begot Jehozadak.

¹¹ Azaria the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the officer over the house of God;

⁹ And they came to Hilkiah the high priest, and gave the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the gate collected of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of the princes, and of everyone that was left in Israel, and of the children of Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

¹⁵ Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

¹⁴ And the elders of the Jews and the Levites built, at the prophecy of Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo; and they built up, and finished it, by the decree of the God of Israel, and by the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes, kings of the Persians.

¹⁰ For Ezra had determined in his heart to seek the law, and to do and teach the ordinances and judgments in Israel.

¹² Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra, the scribe of the law of the Lord God of heaven, Let the order and the answer be accomplished.

²¹ and from me, whatever seems good to you to give. I, King Artaxerxes have made a decree for all the treasuries that are in the country beyond the river, that whatever Ezra the priest and scribe of the God of heaven may require of you, let it be done diligently,

¹ And these are the heads of their families, the leaders that went up with me in the reign of Artaxerxes the king of Babylon: ² Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom; of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel; of the sons of David; Hattush. ³ Of the sons of Shecaniah, and the sons of Parosh; Zechariah; and with him a company of a hundred and fifty men. ⁴ Of the sons of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. ⁵ And of the sons of Zatho, Shechaniah the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. ⁶ And of the sons of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. ⁷ And of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. ⁸ And of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him eighty males. ⁹ And of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males. ¹⁰ And of the sons of Banni, Shelomith the son of Josiphiah, and with him a hundred and sixty males.

¹ And it came to pass in the month of Nisan of the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, that the wine was before me. And I took the wine, and gave it to the king; and there was not another before him.

² So Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and everyone who had understanding was present to hear, on the first day of the seventh month. ³ And he read in it from sunrise until midday, before the men and the women; and they understood it, and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. ⁴ And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden stage, and there stood next to him Mattithiah, Shema, Hanani, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and at his left stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. ⁵ And Ezra opened the book before all the people, for he was above the people; and it came to pass when he had opened it, that all the people stood. ⁶ And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God; and all the people answered, and said, Amen, lifting up their hands. And they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their face to the ground. ⁷ And Jeshua, Bani and Sherebiah instructed the people in the law, and the people stood in their place. ⁸ And they read in the Book of the Law of God, and Ezra taught, and instructed them distinctly in the knowledge of the Lord, and the people understood from the reading. ⁹ And Nehemiah and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites, and they that instructed the people, spoke and said to all the people, It is a holy day to the Lord our God; do not mourn, nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the Law.

¹¹ Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Maraioth, son of Ahitub, was over the house of God.

²⁴ And the captain of the guard took the chief priest, and the second priest, and those that kept the way; ²⁵ and one eunuch, who was over the men of war, and seven men of renown, who were in the king's presence that were found in the city; and the scribe of the forces, who did the part of a scribe to the people of the land; and sixty men of the people of the land, who were found in the midst of the city. ²⁶ And Nabuzaradan the captain of the king's guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah. ²⁷ And the king of Babylon struck them in Riblah, in the land of Hamath.
