¹³ πορευθέντες (Having gone) δὲ (however), μάθετε (learn) τί (what) ἐστιν (is), ‘Ἔλεος (Mercy) θέλω (I desire), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θυσίαν (sacrifice).’ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἦλθον (I came) καλέσαι (to call) δικαίους (the righteous), ἀλλὰ (but) ἁμαρτωλούς (sinners).”

⁴⁷ οὗ (This) χάριν (therefore) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἀφέωνται (have been forgiven) αἱ (the) ἁμαρτίαι (sins) αὐτῆς (of her) αἱ (-) πολλαί (many), ὅτι (for) ἠγάπησεν (she loved) πολύ (much); ᾧ (to whom) δὲ (however) ὀλίγον (little) ἀφίεται (is forgiven), ὀλίγον (little) ἀγαπᾷ (he loves).”

³⁹ Εἷς (One) δὲ (now) τῶν (of the) κρεμασθέντων (having been hanged) κακούργων (criminals) ἐβλασφήμει (was railing at) αὐτόν (Him), ‹λέγων› (saying) “Οὐχὶ (Not) σὺ (you are) εἶ (if) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)? σῶσον (Save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself) καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us)!” ⁴⁰ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) ἕτερος (other) ἐπιτιμῶν (was rebuking) αὐτῷ (him), ἔφη (saying), “Οὐδὲ (Not even) φοβῇ (do fear) σὺ (you) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ὅτι (that) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) κρίματι (judgment) εἶ (you are), ⁴¹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) μὲν (indeed) δικαίως (justly)? ἄξια (Worthy) γὰρ (for) ὧν (of what) ἐπράξαμεν (we did) ἀπολαμβάνομεν (we are receiving); οὗτος (this man) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄτοπον (wrong) ἔπραξεν (did).” ⁴² καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (he was saying), “Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μνήσθητί (remember) μου (me) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃς (You come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) σου (of You)!” ⁴³ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀμήν (Truly) σοι (to you) λέγω (I say), σήμερον (today) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἔσῃ (you will be) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Παραδείσῳ (Paradise).”

¹⁰ ὁ (The) κλέπτης (thief) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (that) κλέψῃ (he might steal), καὶ (and) θύσῃ (might kill), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσῃ (might destroy). ἐγὼ (I) ἦλθον (came) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχωσιν (they may have), καὶ (and) περισσὸν (abundantly) ἔχωσιν (may have it).

²² εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦλθον (I had come) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησα (spoken) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) εἴχοσαν (they would have had); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) πρόφασιν (excuse) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) περὶ (for) τῆς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sin) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) λέγει (says), τοῖς (to those) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) λαλεῖ (it speaks), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (every) στόμα (mouth) φραγῇ (may be stopped), καὶ (and) ὑπόδικος (under judgment) γένηται (may be) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ²⁰ διότι (Therefore) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) οὐ (not) δικαιωθήσεται (will be justified) πᾶσα (any) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); διὰ (through) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law) ἐπίγνωσις (is knowledge) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

¹⁵ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) νόμος (law) ὀργὴν (wrath) κατεργάζεται (brings); οὗ (where) δὲ (now) οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law), οὐδὲ (neither is) παράβασις (transgression).

¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say)? ἐπιμένωμεν (Shall we continue) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (in sin), ἵνα (that) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) πλεονάσῃ (may abound)?

¹⁴ ἁμαρτία (Sin) γὰρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) οὐ (not) κυριεύσει (will rule over), οὐ (not) γάρ (for) ἐστε (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace).

⁵ ὅτε (While) γὰρ (for) ἦμεν (we were) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), τὰ (the) παθήματα (passions) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) τὰ (that were) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ἐνηργεῖτο (were at work) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) καρποφορῆσαι (bringing forth of fruit) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (to death). ⁶ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) κατηργήθημεν (we have been released) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἀποθανόντες (having died) ἐν (to) ᾧ (that which) κατειχόμεθα (we were bound), ὥστε (in order for) δουλεύειν (to serve) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) παλαιότητι (in oldness) γράμματος (of the letter). ⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? ὁ (Is the) νόμος (law) ἁμαρτία (sin)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἔγνων (I have known), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) διὰ (by) νόμου (law); τήν (-) τε (then) γὰρ (for) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness), οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (I had been conscious of), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἔλεγεν (had said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet).” ⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔζων (was alive) χωρὶς (apart from) νόμου (law) ποτέ (once); ἐλθούσης (having come) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀνέζησεν (revived); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (then) ἀπέθανον (died). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) εὑρέθη (proved to be) μοι (me) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (that was) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life), αὕτη (this) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death). ¹¹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἀφορμὴν (an occasion) λαβοῦσα (having taken) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἐξηπάτησέν (deceived) με (me), καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) ἀπέκτεινεν (put me to death). ¹² Ὥστε (So) ὁ (-) μὲν (indeed) νόμος (the law is) ἅγιος (holy), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment is) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (and) δικαία (righteous) καὶ (and) ἀγαθή (good). ¹³ Τὸ (That which) οὖν (then) ἀγαθὸν (is good), ἐμοὶ (to me) ἐγένετο (has become) θάνατος (death)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἵνα (in order that) φανῇ (it might be shown to be) ἁμαρτία (sin), διὰ (through) τοῦ (that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good) μοι (to me) κατεργαζομένη (is working out) θάνατον (death); ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) καθ’ (beyond) ὑπερβολὴν (excess) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinful), ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment).

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals), ¹⁰ οὔτε (nor) κλέπται (thieves), οὔτε (nor) πλεονέκται (coveters), οὐ (not) μέθυσοι (drunkards), οὐ (nor) λοίδοροι (verbal abusers), οὐχ (nor) ἅρπαγες (swindlers), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit). ¹¹ καὶ (And) ταῦτά (such) τινες (some of) ἦτε (you were); ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπελούσασθε (you were washed), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡγιάσθητε (you were sanctified), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐδικαιώθητε (you were justified), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), ἐν (in) γράμμασιν (letters) ἐντετυπωμένη (having been engraved) λίθοις (on stones), ἐγενήθη (was produced) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory), ὥστε (so as for) μὴ (not) δύνασθαι (to be able) ἀτενίσαι (to look intently) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (face) αὐτοῦ (of him), τὴν (which) καταργουμένην (is fading), ⁸ πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) μᾶλλον (more), ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit) ἔσται (will be) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory)? ⁹ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) τῇ* (in the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (-) κατακρίσεως (of condemnation was) δόξα (glory), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) περισσεύει (abounds) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) δόξῃ (in glory)!

¹⁹ Τί (Why) οὖν (then) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law)? τῶν (-) παραβάσεων (Transgressions) χάριν (on account of), προσετέθη (it was added), ἄχρις (until) οὗ* (that) ἔλθῃ (should have come) τὸ (the) σπέρμα (seed) ᾧ (to whom) ἐπήγγελται (promise has been made), διαταγεὶς (having been ordained) δι’ (through) ἀγγέλων (angels) ἐν (in) χειρὶ (the hand) μεσίτου (of a mediator). ²⁰ ὁ (-) δὲ (However), μεσίτης (a mediator) ἑνὸς (of one person) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is); ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Θεὸς (God) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is). ²¹ Ὁ (The) οὖν (therefore) νόμος (Law) κατὰ (is contrary to) τῶν (the) ἐπαγγελιῶν (promises) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἐδόθη (had been given) νόμος (a law) ὁ (-) δυνάμενος (being able) ζωοποιῆσαι (to impart life), ὄντως (indeed) ἐκ (from out of) νόμου (the Law) ἂν (-) ἦν (would have emerged) ἡ (-) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness); ²² ἀλλὰ (but) συνέκλεισεν (imprisoned) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ὑπὸ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (from Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δοθῇ (might be given) τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing). ²³ Πρὸ (Before) τοῦ (-) δὲ (now) ἐλθεῖν (came) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith), ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐφρουρούμεθα (we were held in custody), συνκλειόμενοι (having been locked up) εἰς (until) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (being about) πίστιν (faith) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed), ²⁴ ὥστε (so that) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law) παιδαγωγὸς (trainer) ἡμῶν (of us) γέγονεν (has become), εἰς (unto) Χριστόν (Christ), ἵνα (so that) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) δικαιωθῶμεν (we might be justified). ²⁵ ἐλθούσης (Having come) δὲ (now) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), οὐκέτι (no longer) ὑπὸ (under) παιδαγωγόν (a trainer) ἐσμεν (we are).

⁶ εἰς (to) ἔπαινον (the praise) δόξης (of the glory) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (of grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἧς (which) ἐχαρίτωσεν (He has freely given) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἠγαπημένῳ (Beloved One), ⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἔχομεν (we have) τὴν (-) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὴν (the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (-) παραπτωμάτων (of trespasses), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁸ ἧς (which) ἐπερίσσευσεν (He lavished) εἰς (upon) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) καὶ (and) φρονήσει (understanding),

¹ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you), ὄντας (being) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (in the) παραπτώμασιν (trespasses) καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you), ² ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ποτε (once) περιεπατήσατε (you walked), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἄρχοντα (ruler) τῆς (of the) ἐξουσίας (authority) τοῦ (of the) ἀέρος (air), τοῦ (the) πνεύματος (spirit) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) ἐνεργοῦντος (working) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) υἱοῖς (sons) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience), ³ ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἀνεστράφημέν (lived) ποτε (once) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὰ (the) θελήματα (things willed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) τῶν (of its) διανοιῶν (thoughts); καὶ (and) ἤμεθα (we were) τέκνα (children), φύσει (by nature), ὀργῆς (of wrath), ὡς (as) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λοιποί (rest). ⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Θεὸς (God), πλούσιος (rich) ὢν (being) ἐν (in) ἐλέει (mercy), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) πολλὴν (great) ἀγάπην (love) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἣν (with which) ἠγάπησεν (He loved) ἡμᾶς (us), ⁵ καὶ (even) ὄντας (being) ἡμᾶς (we) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (-) παραπτώμασιν (in trespasses), συνεζωοποίησεν (made us alive with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) — χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) —

¹³ τὸ (-) πρότερον (formerly) ὄντα (being) βλάσφημον (a blasphemer), καὶ (and) διώκτην (a persecutor), καὶ (and) ὑβριστήν (insolent); ἀλλὰ (but) ἠλεήθην (I was shown mercy), ὅτι (because) ἀγνοῶν (being ignorant), ἐποίησα (I did it) ἐν (in) ἀπιστίᾳ (unbelief). ¹⁴ ὑπερεπλεόνασεν (Surpassingly increased) δὲ (then) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), μετὰ (with) πίστεως (the faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), τῆς (that are) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ¹⁵ Πιστὸς (Trustworthy is) ὁ (the) λόγος (saying) καὶ (and) πάσης (of full) ἀποδοχῆς (acceptance) ἄξιος (worthy), ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἁμαρτωλοὺς (sinners) σῶσαι (to save), ὧν (of whom) πρῶτός (the foremost) εἰμι (am) ἐγώ (I). ¹⁶ ἀλλὰ (But) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), ἠλεήθην (I was shown mercy), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me), πρώτῳ (the foremost), ἐνδείξηται (might display) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) τὴν (-) ἅπασαν (perfect) μακροθυμίαν (patience), πρὸς (as) ὑποτύπωσιν (a pattern) τῶν (for those) μελλόντων (being about) πιστεύειν (to believe) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another). ⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) χρηστότης (kindness) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) φιλανθρωπία (love of mankind) ἐπεφάνη (appeared), τοῦ (of the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ⁶ οὗ (whom) ἐξέχεεν (He poured out) ἐφ’ (on) ἡμᾶς (us) πλουσίως (richly) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), ⁷ ἵνα (so that), δικαιωθέντες (having been justified) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (by that) χάριτι (grace), κληρονόμοι (heirs) γενηθῶμεν (we should become) κατ’ (according to) ἐλπίδα (the hope) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal).
