³ “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) πτωχοὶ (poor) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit), Ὅτι (for) αὐτῶν (theirs) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ⁴ Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) πενθοῦντες (mourning), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) παρακληθήσονται (will be comforted). ⁵ Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) πραεῖς (meek), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth). ⁶ Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) πεινῶντες (hungering) καὶ (and) διψῶντες (thirsting for) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness); Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) χορτασθήσονται (will be filled). ⁷ Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) ἐλεήμονες (merciful), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐλεηθήσονται (will receive mercy). ⁸ Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) καθαροὶ (pure) τῇ (-) καρδίᾳ (in heart), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ὄψονται (will see). ⁹ Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) εἰρηνοποιοί (peacemakers), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) υἱοὶ (sons) Θεοῦ (of God) κληθήσονται (will be called). ¹⁰ Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) δεδιωγμένοι (having been persecuted) ἕνεκεν (on account of) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), Ὅτι (for) αὐτῶν (theirs) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ¹¹ Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) ὀνειδίσωσιν (they shall insult) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) διώξωσιν (shall persecute you), καὶ (and) εἴπωσιν (shall say) πᾶν (all kinds of) πονηρὸν (evil) καθ’ (against) ὑμῶν (you), ψευδόμενοι (lying) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me).

²⁵ Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῳ (that) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐξομολογοῦμαί (I fully consent) σοι (to You), Πάτερ (Father), Κύριε (Lord) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ὅτι (that) ἔκρυψας (You did hide) ταῦτα (these things) ἀπὸ (from) σοφῶν (wise) καὶ (and) συνετῶν (learned), καὶ (and) ἀπεκάλυψας (did reveal) αὐτὰ (them) νηπίοις (to little children). ²⁶ ναί (Yes), ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father), ὅτι (for) οὕτως (thus) εὐδοκία (well-pleasing) ἐγένετο (it was) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You). ²⁷ Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (have been delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me). καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐπιγινώσκει (knows) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father); οὐδὲ (nor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) τις (anyone) ἐπιγινώσκει (does know), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (might choose) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).

¹⁶ Ὑμῶν (Of you) δὲ (however) μακάριοι (blessed) οἱ (are the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes), ὅτι (because) βλέπουσιν (they see); καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅτι (because) ἀκούουσιν (they hear). ¹⁷ ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) δίκαιοι (righteous men) ἐπεθύμησαν (longed) ἰδεῖν (to see) ἃ (what) βλέπετε (you see), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἶδαν (saw); καὶ (and) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) ἃ (what) ἀκούετε (you hear), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (heard).

²¹ Ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (the same) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour), ἠγαλλιάσατο (He rejoiced) [ἐν] (in) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐξομολογοῦμαί (I fully consent) σοι (to You), Πάτερ (Father), Κύριε (Lord) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ὅτι (that) ἀπέκρυψας (You have hidden) ταῦτα (these things) ἀπὸ (from) σοφῶν (wise) καὶ (and) συνετῶν (intelligent), καὶ (and) ἀπεκάλυψας (have revealed) αὐτὰ (them) νηπίοις (to little children); ναί (yes), ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father), ὅτι (for) οὕτως (thus) εὐδοκία (well-pleasing) ἐγένετο (was it) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You). ²² Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (have been delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me). καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) γινώσκει (knows) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father); καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (might resolve) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).” ²³ Καὶ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), εἶπεν (He said), “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) οἱ (-) βλέποντες (seeing) ἃ (what) βλέπετε (you see)! ²⁴ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) βασιλεῖς (kings) ἠθέλησαν (desired) ἰδεῖν (to see) ἃ (what) ὑμεῖς (you) βλέπετε (see), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἶδαν (saw); καὶ (and) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) ἃ (what) ἀκούετε (you hear), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (heard).”

³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐδεήθην (begged) περὶ (for) σοῦ (you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐκλίπῃ (may fail) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you); καὶ (and) σύ (you), ποτε (when) ἐπιστρέψας (you have turned back), στήρισον (strengthen) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) σου (of you).”

⁴² ἤγαγεν (He led) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ἐμβλέψας (Having looked at) αὐτῷ (him), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) Σίμων (Simon) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) Ἰωάννου (of John); σὺ (You) κληθήσῃ (will be called) Κηφᾶς (Cephas)”— ὃ (which) ἑρμηνεύεται (means) Πέτρος (Peter).

⁴⁵ ἔστιν (It is) γεγραμμένον (written) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) προφήταις (prophets): ‘Καὶ (And) ἔσονται (they will be) πάντες (all) διδακτοὶ (taught) Θεοῦ (of God).’ πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) ἀκούσας (having heard) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) καὶ (and) μαθὼν (having learned), ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) ἐμέ (Me).

⁶ Ἐφανέρωσά (I revealed) σου (Your) τὸ (-) ὄνομα (name) τοῖς (to the) ἀνθρώποις (men) οὓς (whom) ἔδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world). σοὶ (Yours) ἦσαν (they were), κἀμοὶ (and to Me) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔδωκας (You gave), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) σου (of You) τετήρηκαν (they have kept). ⁷ νῦν (Now) ἔγνωκαν (they have known) ὅτι (that) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (whatever) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), παρὰ (of) σοῦ (You) εἰσιν (are); ⁸ ὅτι (for) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) ἃ (that) ἔδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), δέδωκα (I have given) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔλαβον (received them) καὶ (and) ἔγνωσαν (knew) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὅτι (that) παρὰ (from) σοῦ (You) ἐξῆλθον (I came forth); καὶ (and) ἐπίστευσαν (they believed) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent).

¹⁵ Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἠρίστησαν (they had dined), λέγει (says) τῷ (-) Σίμωνι (to Simon) Πέτρῳ (Peter) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Σίμων (Simon) Ἰωάννου (son of John), ἀγαπᾷς (love you) με (Me) πλέον (more) τούτων (than these)?” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord); σὺ (You) οἶδας (know) ὅτι (that) φιλῶ (I dearly love) σε (You).” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Βόσκε (Feed) τὰ (the) ἀρνία (lambs) μου (of Me).” ¹⁶ Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him) πάλιν (again) δεύτερον (a second time), “Σίμων (Simon) Ἰωάννου (son of John), ἀγαπᾷς (love you) με (Me)?” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord); σὺ (You) οἶδας (know) ὅτι (that) φιλῶ (I dearly love) σε (You).” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ποίμαινε (Shepherd) τὰ (the) πρόβατά (sheep) μου (of Me).” ¹⁷ Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸ (the) τρίτον (third time), “Σίμων (Simon) Ἰωάννου (son of John), φιλεῖς (do you dearly love) με (Me)?” Ἐλυπήθη (Was grieved) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) ὅτι (because) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸ (the) τρίτον (third time), “Φιλεῖς (Do you dearly love) με (Me)?” Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), πάντα (all things) σὺ (You) οἶδας (know); σὺ (You) γινώσκεις (know) ὅτι (that) φιλῶ (I dearly love) σε (You).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Βόσκε (Feed) τὰ (the) πρόβατά (sheep) μου (of Me).

⁹ ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἃ (What) ὀφθαλμὸς (eye) οὐκ (not) εἶδεν (has seen), καὶ (and) οὖς (ear) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσεν (has heard), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (into) καρδίαν (heart) ἀνθρώπου (of man) οὐκ (not) ἀνέβη (has entered), ὅσα (what) ἡτοίμασεν (has prepared) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τοῖς (for those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him).” ¹⁰ Ἡμῖν (To us) γὰρ (for) ἀπεκάλυψεν (has revealed it) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit). Τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) πάντα (all things) ἐραυνᾷ (searches), καὶ (even) τὰ (the) βάθη (depths) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹¹ τίς (Who) γὰρ (for) οἶδεν (knows) ἀνθρώπων (among men) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τὸ (that is) ἐν (within) αὐτῷ (him)? οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἔγνωκεν (knows), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹² ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (now), οὐ (not) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐλάβομεν (have received), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (who is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἵνα (that) εἰδῶμεν (we may know) τὰ (the things) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) χαρισθέντα (having been granted) ἡμῖν (to us),

⁵⁰ Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) φημι (I say), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) σὰρξ (flesh) καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομῆσαι (to inherit) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able), οὐδὲ (nor) ἡ (the) φθορὰ (decay), τὴν (the) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) κληρονομεῖ (does inherit).

¹¹ γνωρίζω (I make known) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τὸ (-) εὐαγγελισθὲν (having been preached) ὑπ’ (by) ἐμοῦ (me), ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (it is) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man). ¹² οὐδὲ (Neither) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) παρὰ (from) ἀνθρώπου (man) παρέλαβον (received) αὐτό (it), οὔτε (nor) ἐδιδάχθην (was I taught it), ἀλλὰ (but) δι’ (by) ἀποκαλύψεως (a revelation) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁸ ἵνα (so that) ἐξισχύσητε (you may be fully able) καταλαβέσθαι (to comprehend) σὺν (with) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints) τί (what is) τὸ (the) πλάτος (breadth) καὶ (and) μῆκος (length) καὶ (and) ὕψος (height) καὶ (and) βάθος (depth), ¹⁹ γνῶναί (to know) τε (then) τὴν (the) ὑπερβάλλουσαν (surpassing) τῆς (-) γνώσεως (knowledge) ἀγάπην (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (so that) πληρωθῆτε (you may be filled) εἰς (unto) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁵ Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃ (shall confess) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (he) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God).

²⁰ οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἥκει (is come), καὶ (and) δέδωκεν (has given) ἡμῖν (us) διάνοιαν (understanding), ἵνα (so that) γινώσκωμεν* (we may know) τὸν (Him who is) ἀληθινόν (true); καὶ (and) ἐσμὲν (we are) ἐν (in) τῷ (Him who is) ἀληθινῷ (true), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστῷ (Christ). οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἀληθινὸς (true) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) ζωὴ (life) αἰώνιος (eternal).
