¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσεν (heard) ὁ (-) βασιλεὺς (King) Ἡρῴδης (Herod); φανερὸν (well known) γὰρ (for) ἐγένετο (became) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him). καὶ (And) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἰωάννης (John), ὁ (the one) Βαπτίζων (baptizing), ἐγήγερται (is risen) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) ἐνεργοῦσιν (operate) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miraculous powers) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).” ¹⁵ ἄλλοι (Others) δὲ (however) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐστίν (He is).” ἄλλοι (Others) δὲ (now) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Προφήτης (A prophet), ὡς (like) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).” ¹⁶ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ἔλεγεν (was saying), “Ὃν (Whom) ἐγὼ (I) ἀπεκεφάλισα (beheaded), Ἰωάννην (John)— οὗτος (he) ἠγέρθη (is risen)!” ¹⁷ Αὐτὸς (Himself) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἀποστείλας (having sent), ἐκράτησεν (seized) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) καὶ (and) ἔδησεν (bound) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), διὰ (on account of) Ἡρῳδιάδα (Herodias), τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) Φιλίππου (of Philip) τοῦ (the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὅτι (because) αὐτὴν (her) ἐγάμησεν (he had married). ¹⁸ ἔλεγεν (Had been saying) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (to Herod) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔξεστίν (it is lawful) σοι (for you) ἔχειν (to have) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you).” ¹⁹ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῳδιὰς (Herodias) ἐνεῖχεν (held it) αὐτῷ (against him), καὶ (and) ἤθελεν (wished) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδύνατο (was able); ²⁰ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ἐφοβεῖτο (was afraid of) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John), εἰδὼς (knowing) αὐτὸν (him) ἄνδρα (to be a man) δίκαιον (righteous) καὶ (and) ἅγιον (holy); καὶ (and) συνετήρει (he kept safe) αὐτόν (him). καὶ (And) ἀκούσας (having heard) αὐτοῦ (him), πολλὰ (greatly) ἠπόρει (he was perplexed) καὶ (and) ἡδέως (gladly) αὐτοῦ (him) ἤκουεν (heard). ²¹ Καὶ (And) γενομένης (having come) ἡμέρας (a day) εὐκαίρου (opportune), ὅτε (when) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τοῖς (on the) γενεσίοις (birthday) αὐτοῦ (of him) δεῖπνον (a banquet) ἐποίησεν (made) τοῖς (to the) μεγιστᾶσιν (great men) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) χιλιάρχοις (chief captains), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) πρώτοις (leading men) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), ²² καὶ (and) εἰσελθούσης (having come in) τῆς (the) θυγατρὸς (daughter) αὐτῆς (of herself) τῆς (-) Ἡρῳδιάδος (Herodias), καὶ (and) ὀρχησαμένης (having danced), ἤρεσεν (pleased) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (Herod) καὶ (and) τοῖς (those) συνανακειμένοις (reclining with him). «ὁ (-) 〈δὲ〉 (And) βασιλεὺς» (the king) εἶπεν (said) τῷ (to the) κορασίῳ (girl), “Αἴτησόν (Ask) με (me) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃς (you wish), καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you).” ²³ καὶ (And) ὤμοσεν (he swore) αὐτῇ (to her), “[Πολλά] (Whatever) Ὅ¦τι (that) ἐάν (if) με (me) αἰτήσῃς (you might ask), δώσω (I will give) σοι (you), ἕως (up to) ἡμίσους (half) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) μου (of me).” ²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθοῦσα (having gone out), εἶπεν (she said) τῇ (to the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτῆς (of her), “Τί (What) αἰτήσωμαι (shall I ask)?” Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Τὴν (The) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the one) Βαπτίζοντος (baptizing).” ²⁵ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθοῦσα (having entered) εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) σπουδῆς (haste) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) βασιλέα (king), ᾐτήσατο (she asked), λέγουσα (saying), “Θέλω (I desire) ἵνα (that) ἐξαυτῆς (at once) δῷς (you give) μοι (to me) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist).” ²⁶ Καὶ (And) περίλυπος (encompassingly sorrowful) γενόμενος (having been made) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king), διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἀνακειμένους (reclining with him), οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησεν (was he willing) ἀθετῆσαι (to refuse) αὐτήν (her). ²⁷ καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀποστείλας (having sent) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) σπεκουλάτορα (an executioner), ἐπέταξεν (he commanded) ἐνέγκαι (to be brought) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ἀπεκεφάλισεν (he beheaded) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison), ²⁸ καὶ (and) ἤνεγκεν (brought) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter), καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτὴν (it) τῷ (to the) κορασίῳ (girl), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κοράσιον (girl) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτὴν (it) τῇ (to the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτῆς (of her). ²⁹ καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἦλθον* (came), καὶ (and) ἦραν (took up) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἔθηκαν (laid) αὐτὸ (it) ἐν (in) μνημείῳ (a tomb).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) διεστέλλετο (He was instructing) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ὁρᾶτε (Watch out); βλέπετε (take heed) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) ζύμης (leaven) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod).”

¹⁹ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (tetrarch), ἐλεγχόμενος (being reproved) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) περὶ (concerning) Ἡρῳδιάδος (Herodias), τῆς (the) γυναικὸς (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) ὧν (that) ἐποίησεν (had done) πονηρῶν (the evils) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod),

⁷ Ἤκουσεν (Heard of) δὲ (now) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (Tetrarch) τὰ (the things) γινόμενα (being done) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) διηπόρει (was perplexed), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) λέγεσθαι (it was said) ὑπό (by) τινων (some) ὅτι (-) Ἰωάννης (John) ἠγέρθη (has been raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ⁸ ὑπό (by) τινων (some) δὲ (also) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐφάνη (had appeared), ἄλλων (by others) δὲ (also) ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet) τις (one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχαίων (ancients) ἀνέστη (had arisen). ⁹ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), “Ἰωάννην (John) ἐγὼ (I) ἀπεκεφάλισα (beheaded); τίς (who) δέ (however) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἀκούω (I hear) τοιαῦτα (such things)?” καὶ (And) ἐζήτει (he was seeking) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτόν (Him).

³¹ Ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (same) τῇ (the) ὥρᾳ (hour) προσῆλθάν (came near) τινες (certain) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), λέγοντες (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἔξελθε (Go out) καὶ (and) πορεύου (proceed) ἐντεῦθεν (from here), ὅτι (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) θέλει (desires) σε (You) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill).” ³² Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορευθέντες (Having gone), εἴπατε (say) τῇ (to the) ἀλώπεκι (fox) ταύτῃ (that), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐκβάλλω (I cast out) δαιμόνια (demons), καὶ (and) ἰάσεις (cures) ἀποτελῶ (I complete) σήμερον (today) καὶ (and) αὔριον (tomorrow), καὶ (and) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third day) τελειοῦμαι (I am perfected).’

⁷ καὶ (and) ἐπιγνοὺς (having learned) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐξουσίας (jurisdiction) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod) ἐστὶν (He is), ἀνέπεμψεν (he sent up) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) Ἡρῴδην (Herod), ὄντα (being) καὶ (also) αὐτὸν (he himself) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem) ἐν (in) ταύταις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days). ⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἐχάρη (was glad) λίαν (exceedingly); ἦν (he was) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἱκανῶν (a long) χρόνων (time) θέλων (wishing) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτὸν (Him), διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) ἀκούειν (hearing) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him); καὶ (and) ἤλπιζέν (he was hoping) τι (some) σημεῖον (sign) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) γινόμενον (done). ⁹ ἐπηρώτα (He kept questioning) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) λόγοις (words) ἱκανοῖς (many); αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (answered) αὐτῷ (him). ¹⁰ Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing by) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), εὐτόνως (vehemently) κατηγοροῦντες (accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ ἐξουθενήσας (Having set at naught) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), ‹καὶ› (also) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) στρατεύμασιν (troops) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐμπαίξας (having mocked Him), περιβαλὼν (having put on Him) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) λαμπρὰν (splendid), ἀνέπεμψεν (sent back) αὐτὸν (him) τῷ (to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate). ¹² Ἐγένοντο (Became) δὲ (then) φίλοι (friends) ὅ (-) τε (both) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) μετ’ (with) ἀλλήλων (one another); προϋπῆρχον (previously it had been that) γὰρ (for) ἐν (at) ἔχθρᾳ (enmity) ὄντες (they were) πρὸς (between) αὑτούς (themselves).

¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (No), οὐδὲ (not even) Ἡρῴδης (Herod did); ἀνέπεμψεν (he sent back) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us). καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) ἐστὶν (is) πεπραγμένον (done) αὐτῷ (by Him).

²⁷ Συνήχθησαν (Were gathered together) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (in) ἀληθείας (truth), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (this), ἐπὶ (against) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) Παῖδά (servant) σου (of You) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ὃν (whom) ἔχρισας (You anointed), Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τε (both) καὶ (and) Πόντιος (Pontius) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), σὺν (with) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles) καὶ (and) λαοῖς (peoples) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel),
