¹⁴ Τὸ (That) δὲ (now) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns) πεσόν (having fallen), οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), καὶ (and) ὑπὸ (under) μεριμνῶν (cares), καὶ (and) πλούτου (riches), καὶ (and) ἡδονῶν (pleasures) τοῦ (-) βίου (of life), πορευόμενοι (moving along) συμπνίγονται (are choked), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) τελεσφοροῦσιν (do mature).

¹⁵ εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ὁρᾶτε (Beware) καὶ (and) φυλάσσεσθε (keep yourselves) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) πλεονεξίας (covetousness); ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) περισσεύειν (abundance) τινὶ (to anyone), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) αὐτοῦ (to him) ἐστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τῶν (that which) ὑπαρχόντων (possesses) αὐτῷ (of him).”

⁸ Σταθεὶς (Having stood) δὲ (then), Ζακχαῖος (Zacchaeus) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), τὰ (the) ἡμίσιά* (half) μου (of me) τῶν (of the) ὑπαρχόντων (possessions), Κύριε (Lord), τοῖς (to the) πτωχοῖς (poor) δίδωμι (I give); καὶ (and) εἴ (if) τινός (of anyone) τι (anything) ἐσυκοφάντησα (I have defrauded), ἀποδίδωμι (I restore it) τετραπλοῦν (fourfold).”

³⁴ Προσέχετε (Take heed) δὲ (now) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) βαρηθῶσιν (be burdened) ὑμῶν (of you) αἱ (the) καρδίαι (hearts) ἐν (with) κραιπάλῃ (dissipation) καὶ (and) μέθῃ (drunkenness) καὶ (and) μερίμναις (cares) βιωτικαῖς (of life) — καὶ (and) ἐπιστῇ (would come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνη (that) ὡς (as) παγίς (a snare).

⁵ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) ἴστε (you know), γινώσκοντες (realizing) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (any) πόρνος (fornicator), ἢ (or) ἀκάθαρτος (unclean person), ἢ (or) πλεονέκτης (covetous man), ὅ (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰδωλολάτρης (an idolater), οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), καὶ (and) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁸ ἀλλὰ (But) μὲν‿ (-), οὖν‿ (therefore) γε (indeed), καὶ (also) ἡγοῦμαι (I count) πάντα (all things) ζημίαν (loss) εἶναι (to be) διὰ (because of) τὸ (the) ὑπερέχον (excelling) τῆς (-) γνώσεως (knowledge) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) μου (of me), δι’ (because of) ὃν (whom) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ἐζημιώθην (I have lost), καὶ (and) ἡγοῦμαι (esteem them) σκύβαλα (rubbish), ἵνα (that) Χριστὸν (Christ) κερδήσω (I may gain)

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry),
