¹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) ἐλθεῖν (going) αὐτὸν (of Him) εἰς (into) οἶκόν (a house) τινος (of one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) σαββάτῳ (on a Sabbath) φαγεῖν (to eat) ἄρτον (bread), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἦσαν (were) παρατηρούμενοι (watching) αὐτόν (Him).

² καὶ (and) παρετήρουν (they were watching) αὐτὸν (Him), εἰ (whether) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) θεραπεύσει (He will heal) αὐτόν (him), ἵνα (in order that) κατηγορήσωσιν (they might accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him).

⁷ παρετηροῦντο (Were closely watching) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), εἰ (whether) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) θεραπεύει (He will heal), ἵνα (that) εὕρωσιν (they might find reason) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him).

³⁴ ἐλήλυθεν (Has come) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ἐσθίων (eating) καὶ (and) πίνων (drinking), καὶ (and) λέγετε (you say), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἄνθρωπος (a man), φάγος (a glutton) καὶ (and) οἰνοπότης (a drunkard), φίλος (a friend) τελωνῶν (of tax collectors) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλῶν (of sinners).’ ³⁵ καὶ (And) ἐδικαιώθη (was justified) ἡ (-) σοφία (wisdom) ἀπὸ (by) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) αὐτῆς (of her).” ³⁶ Ἠρώτα (Was asking) δέ (now) τις (one) αὐτὸν (Him) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), ἵνα (that) φάγῃ (He should eat) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him); καὶ (and) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (of the) Φαρισαίου (Pharisee), κατεκλίθη (He reclined).

³⁷ Ἐν (In) δὲ (then) τῷ (the) λαλῆσαι (speaking), ἐρωτᾷ (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee) ὅπως (that) ἀριστήσῃ (He would dine) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him), εἰσελθὼν (having entered) δὲ (then), ἀνέπεσεν (He reclined).

⁵³ Κἀκεῖθεν (From there) ἐξελθόντος (having gone forth) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἤρξαντο (began) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) δεινῶς (urgently) ἐνέχειν (to press upon Him) καὶ (and) ἀποστοματίζειν (to make speak) αὐτὸν (Him) περὶ (about) πλειόνων (many things), ⁵⁴ ἐνεδρεύοντες (watching) αὐτὸν (Him) θηρεῦσαί (to catch) τι (in something) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²⁰ Καὶ (And) παρατηρήσαντες (having watched Him), ἀπέστειλαν (they sent) ἐνκαθέτους (spies), ὑποκρινομένους (feigning) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) δικαίους (righteous) εἶναι (to be), ἵνα (that) ἐπιλάβωνται (they might catch) αὐτοῦ (Him) λόγου (in talk), ὥστε (in order) παραδοῦναι (to deliver) αὐτὸν (Him) τῇ (to the) ἀρχῇ (rule) καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) τοῦ (of the) ἡγεμόνος (governor).

¹ Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) ὄνομα (name) αὐτῷ (to him), ἄρχων (a ruler) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews);

³⁴ Ἀναστὰς (Having risen up) δέ (however) τις (a certain man) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συνεδρίῳ (Council), Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee) ὀνόματι (named) Γαμαλιήλ (Gamaliel), νομοδιδάσκαλος (a teacher of the law) τίμιος (honored) παντὶ (by all) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded them) ἔξω (outside) βραχὺ (for a short while) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) ποιῆσαι (to put).

¹⁹ Ἐλεύθερος (Free) γὰρ (for) ὢν (being) ἐκ (from) πάντων (all), πᾶσιν (to all) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) ἐδούλωσα (I became servant), ἵνα (so that) τοὺς (the) πλείονας (more) κερδήσω (I might gain). ²⁰ καὶ (And) ἐγενόμην (I became) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ὡς (like) Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew), ἵνα (so that) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) κερδήσω (I might win). τοῖς (To those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law), ὡς (as) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the law)— μὴ (not) ὢν (being) αὐτὸς (myself) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the law)— ἵνα (so that) τοὺς (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the law) κερδήσω (I might win). ²¹ τοῖς (To those) ἀνόμοις (outside the Law), ὡς (like) ἄνομος (outside the Law)— μὴ (not) ὢν (being) ἄνομος (outside the law) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔννομος (under the law) Χριστοῦ (to Christ)— ἵνα (so that) κερδάνω (I might win) τοὺς (those) ἀνόμους (outside the Law). ²² ἐγενόμην (I became) τοῖς (to the) ἀσθενέσιν (weak), ἀσθενής (weak), ἵνα (that) τοὺς (the) ἀσθενεῖς (weak) κερδήσω (I might win). τοῖς (These things) πᾶσιν (to all) γέγονα (I have become) πάντα (all), ἵνα (so that) πάντως (by all means), τινὰς (some) σώσω (I might save).
