²² Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (because) ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) τοὺς (of the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews); ἤδη (already) γὰρ (for) συνετέθειντο (had agreed together) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἵνα (that) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁμολογήσῃ (should confess) Χριστόν (Christ), ἀποσυνάγωγος (expelled from the synagogue) γένηται (he would be).

²² Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) μισήσωσιν (shall hate) ὑμᾶς (you) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) ἀφορίσωσιν (they shall exclude) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ὀνειδίσωσιν (shall insult you), καὶ (and) ἐκβάλωσιν (shall cast out) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) ὑμῶν (of you) ὡς (as) πονηρὸν (evil), ἕνεκα (on account of) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).

⁴ Λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), τοῖς (those) φίλοις (friends) μου (of Me), μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should fear) ἀπὸ (because) τῶν (of those) ἀποκτεινόντων* (killing) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) καὶ (and) μετὰ (after) ταῦτα (these things) μὴ (not) ἐχόντων (being able) περισσότερόν (more abundantly) τι (anything) ποιῆσαι (to do). ⁵ ὑποδείξω (I will show) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (you) τίνα (whom) φοβηθῆτε (you should fear): φοβήθητε (Fear) τὸν (the One who) μετὰ (after) τὸ (the) ἀποκτεῖναι (killing), ἔχοντα (has) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἐμβαλεῖν (to cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) γέενναν (hell). ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), τοῦτον (Him) φοβήθητε (fear). ⁶ Οὐχὶ (Not) πέντε (five) στρουθία (sparrows) πωλοῦνται (are sold for) ἀσσαρίων (assarion) δύο (two)? καὶ (And) ἓν (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐπιλελησμένον (forgotten) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). ⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) καὶ (even) αἱ (the) τρίχες (hairs) τῆς (of the) κεφαλῆς (head) ὑμῶν (of you) πᾶσαι (all) ἠρίθμηνται (have been numbered). μὴ (Not) φοβεῖσθε (fear), πολλῶν (than many) στρουθίων (sparrows) διαφέρετε (you are more valuable). ⁸ Λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), πᾶς (everyone) ὃς (who) ἂν (-) ὁμολογήσῃ (will confess) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (the) ἀνθρώπων (men), καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὁμολογήσει (will confess) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ⁹ ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἀρνησάμενός (having denied) με (Me) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ἀπαρνηθήσεται (will be denied) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁵⁶ ἰδοῦσα (Having seen) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (him) παιδίσκη (a servant girl) τις (certain) καθήμενον (sitting) πρὸς (by) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), καὶ (and) ἀτενίσασα (having looked intently on) αὐτῷ (him), εἶπεν (she said), “Καὶ (Also) οὗτος (this one) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἦν (was).” ⁵⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἠρνήσατο (he denied it), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I do know) αὐτόν (Him), γύναι (woman).” ⁵⁸ Καὶ (And) μετὰ (after) βραχὺ (a little), ἕτερος (another) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὸν (him), ἔφη (was saying), “Καὶ (Also) σὺ (you) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶ (are).” Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Πέτρος (Peter) ἔφη (was saying), “Ἄνθρωπε (Man), οὐκ (not) εἰμί (I am).” ⁵⁹ Καὶ (And) διαστάσης (having elapsed) ὡσεὶ (about) ὥρας (hour) μιᾶς (one), ἄλλος (other) τις (a certain) διϊσχυρίζετο (strongly affirmed it), λέγων (saying), “Ἐπ’ (Of) ἀληθείας (a truth), καὶ (also) οὗτος (this one) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἦν (was); καὶ (also) γὰρ (for) Γαλιλαῖός (a Galilean) ἐστιν (he is).” ⁶⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter), “Ἄνθρωπε (Man), οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I know) ὃ (what) λέγεις (you say).” καὶ (And) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἔτι (while) λαλοῦντος (he was speaking) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐφώνησεν (crowed) ἀλέκτωρ (the rooster). ⁶¹ καὶ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐνέβλεψεν (looked at) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (Peter), καὶ (and) ὑπεμνήσθη (remembered) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), ὡς (how) εἶπεν (He had said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅτι (-), “Πρὶν (Before) ἀλέκτορα (the rooster) φωνῆσαι (crows) σήμερον (today), ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) με (Me) τρίς (three times).”

¹³ Οὐδεὶς (No one) μέντοι (however) παρρησίᾳ (publicly) ἐλάλει (was speaking) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him), διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews).

⁴⁵ Ἦλθον (Came) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees), καὶ (and) εἶπον (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐκεῖνοι (that), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὐκ (not) ἠγάγετε (did you bring) αὐτόν (Him)?” ⁴⁶ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) οὕτως (like this) ἄνθρωπος (a man), 〈ὡς (as) οὗτος (this) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος〉 (man).” ⁴⁷ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (them) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πεπλάνησθε (have been deceived)? ⁴⁸ μή (Not) τις (any) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (Him), ἢ (or) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees)? ⁴⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) οὗτος (this), ὁ (-) μὴ (not) γινώσκων (knowing) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ἐπάρατοί (accursed) εἰσιν (are).” ⁵⁰ Λέγει (Says) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ὁ (the one) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), [τὸ] (the) πρότερον (former) εἷς (one) ὢν (being) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ⁵¹ “Μὴ (Not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἡμῶν (of us) κρίνει (does judge) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (it has heard) πρῶτον (first) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) καὶ (and) γνῷ (known) τί (what) ποιεῖ (he does)?” ⁵² Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) εἶ (are)? ἐραύνησον (Search) καὶ (and) ἴδε (see) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) προφήτης (a prophet) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρεται (is raised).”

³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐν (In) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) σὺ (you) ἐγεννήθης (were born) ὅλος (entirely), καὶ (and) σὺ (you) διδάσκεις (teach) ἡμᾶς (us)?” καὶ (And) ἐξέβαλον (they cast) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (out).

⁴² ὅμως (Nevertheless), μέντοι (indeed) καὶ (even) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees) οὐχ (not) ὡμολόγουν (they were confessing), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἀποσυνάγωγοι (put out of the synagogue) γένωνται (they might be); ⁴³ ἠγάπησαν (they loved) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) μᾶλλον (more) ἤπερ (than) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

² ἀποσυναγώγους (Out of the synagogues) ποιήσουσιν (they will put) ὑμᾶς (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ἵνα (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀποκτείνας (having killed) ὑμᾶς (you) δόξῃ (will think) λατρείαν (it is a service) προσφέρειν (to offer) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

³⁸ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) ταῦτα (these things), ἠρώτησεν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) [ὁ] (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ἁριμαθαίας (Arimathea), ὢν (being) μαθητὴς (a disciple) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus)— κεκρυμμένος (concealed) δὲ (however) διὰ (through) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)— ἵνα (that) ἄρῃ (he might take away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus); καὶ (and) ἐπέτρεψεν (gave permission) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate). ἦλθεν (He came) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) ἦρεν (took away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁹ Οὔσης (It being) οὖν (therefore) ὀψίας (evening) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (same), τῇ (the) μιᾷ (first) σαββάτων (of the week), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) θυρῶν (doors) κεκλεισμένων (having been shut), ὅπου (where) ἦσαν (were) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) διὰ (through) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔστη (stood) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst), καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Εἰρήνη (Peace) ὑμῖν (to you).”

¹⁸ Καὶ (And) καλέσαντες (having called) αὐτοὺς (them), παρήγγειλαν (they commanded them) ‹τὸ› (-) καθόλου (at all) μὴ (not) φθέγγεσθαι (to speak) μηδὲ (nor) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

¹³ τῶν (of the) δὲ (now) λοιπῶν (rest), οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐτόλμα (dared) κολλᾶσθαι (to join) αὐτοῖς (them), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐμεγάλυνεν (were magnifying) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (the) λαός (people);

⁴⁰ Ἐπείσθησαν (They were persuaded) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (by him); καὶ (and) προσκαλεσάμενοι (having called in) τοὺς (the) ἀποστόλους (apostles), δείραντες (having beaten), παρήγγειλαν (they commanded them) μὴ (not) λαλεῖν (to speak) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπέλυσαν (released them).

¹¹ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἦλθεν (came) Κηφᾶς (Peter) εἰς (to) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch), κατὰ (to) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτῷ (his) ἀντέστην (I opposed him), ὅτι (because) κατεγνωσμένος (condemned) ἦν (he stood). ¹² πρὸ (Before) τοῦ (-) γὰρ (for), ἐλθεῖν (came) τινας (certain ones) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰακώβου (James), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) συνήσθιεν (he was eating); ὅτε (when) δὲ (however) ἦλθον (they came), ὑπέστελλεν (he was drawing back) καὶ (and) ἀφώριζεν (was separating) ἑαυτόν (himself), φοβούμενος (being afraid of) τοὺς (those) ἐκ (of) περιτομῆς (the circumcision). ¹³ καὶ (And) συνυπεκρίθησαν (acted hypocritically) αὐτῷ (with him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) Ἰουδαῖοι (of the Jews), ὥστε (so that) καὶ (even) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) συναπήχθη (was carried away) αὐτῶν (of them) τῇ (by the) ὑποκρίσει (hypocrisy).

⁸ Τοῖς (-) δὲ (But) δειλοῖς (to the cowardly) καὶ (and) ἀπίστοις (unbelieving) καὶ (and) ἐβδελυγμένοις (having become abominable) καὶ (and) φονεῦσιν (murderers) καὶ (and) πόρνοις (the sexually immoral) καὶ (and) φαρμάκοις (sorcerers) καὶ (and) εἰδωλολάτραις (idolaters) καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (-) ψευδέσιν (liars), τὸ (the) μέρος (portion) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (is in) τῇ (the) λίμνῃ (lake) τῇ (-) καιομένῃ (burning) πυρὶ (with fire) καὶ (and) θείῳ (brimstone), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερος (second).”
