¹ Ἄγε (Come) νῦν (now), οἱ (you) πλούσιοι (rich), κλαύσατε (weep), ὀλολύζοντες (wailing) ἐπὶ (over) ταῖς (the) ταλαιπωρίαις (miseries) ὑμῶν (upon you) ταῖς (that are) ἐπερχομέναις (coming).

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πλούσιος (a rich man) δυσκόλως (with difficulty) εἰσελεύσεται (will enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ²⁴ πάλιν (Again) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), εὐκοπώτερόν (easier for) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (a camel) διὰ (through the) τρυπήματος (eye) ῥαφίδος (of a needle) εἰσελθεῖν (to go), ἢ (than) πλούσιον (a rich man) [εἰσελθεῖν] (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).”

²⁴ Πλὴν (But) οὐαὶ (woe) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (who are) πλουσίοις (rich), Ὅτι (for) ἀπέχετε (you are receiving) τὴν (the) παράκλησιν (comfort) ὑμῶν (of you). ²⁵ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you) οἱ (who) ἐμπεπλησμένοι (having been filled) νῦν (now), Ὅτι (for) πεινάσετε (you will hunger). Οὐαί (Woe to) οἱ (those) γελῶντες (laughing) νῦν (now), Ὅτι (for) πενθήσετε (you will mourn) καὶ (and) κλαύσετε (will weep).

¹⁶ Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (then) παραβολὴν (a parable) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ἀνθρώπου (Of a man) τινὸς (certain) πλουσίου (rich) εὐφόρησεν (brought forth abundantly) ἡ (the) χώρα (ground). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) διελογίζετο (he was reasoning) ἐν (within) ἑαυτῷ (himself), λέγων (saying), ‘Τί (What) ποιήσω (shall I do), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have) ποῦ (where) συνάξω (I will store up) τοὺς (the) καρπούς (fruits) μου (of me)?’ ¹⁸ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Τοῦτο (This) ποιήσω (will I do): καθελῶ (I will tear down) μου (my) τὰς (-) ἀποθήκας (barns) καὶ (and) μείζονας (greater) οἰκοδομήσω (will build), καὶ (and) συνάξω (will store up) ἐκεῖ (there) πάντα (all) τὸν (the) σῖτον (grain) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἀγαθά (goods) μου (of me). ¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἐρῶ (I will say) τῇ (to the) ψυχῇ (soul) μου (of me), “Ψυχή (Soul), ἔχεις (you have) πολλὰ (many) ἀγαθὰ (good things) κείμενα (laid up) εἰς (for) ἔτη (years) πολλά (many); ἀναπαύου (take your rest); φάγε (eat), πίε (drink), εὐφραίνου (be merry).”’ ²⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ‘Ἄφρων (Fool)! ταύτῃ (This) τῇ (-) νυκτὶ (night), τὴν (the) ψυχήν (soul) σου (of you) ἀπαιτοῦσιν (is required) ἀπὸ (of) σοῦ (you); ἃ (what) δὲ (now) ἡτοίμασας (you did prepare)— τίνι (to whom) ἔσται (will it be)?’ ²¹ Οὕτως (So is) ὁ (the one) θησαυρίζων (treasuring up) ἑαυτῷ* (for himself), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) εἰς (toward) Θεὸν (God) πλουτῶν (being rich).”

¹⁹ Ἄνθρωπος (A man) δέ (now) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) πλούσιος (rich), καὶ (and) ἐνεδιδύσκετο (he was clothed in) πορφύραν (purple) καὶ (and) βύσσον (fine linen), εὐφραινόμενος (making good cheer) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) λαμπρῶς (in splendor). ²⁰ πτωχὸς (A poor man) δέ (now) τις (certain) ὀνόματι (named) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἐβέβλητο (was laid) πρὸς (at) τὸν (the) πυλῶνα (gate) αὐτοῦ (of him), εἱλκωμένος (being full of sores) ²¹ καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμῶν (desiring) χορτασθῆναι (to be fed) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (that) πιπτόντων (falling) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) τοῦ (of the) πλουσίου (rich man); ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) κύνες (dogs), ἐρχόμενοι (coming), ἐπέλειχον (were licking) τὰ (the) ἕλκη (sores) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²² Ἐγένετο (It came to pass that) δὲ (then) ἀποθανεῖν (died) τὸν (the) πτωχὸν (poor man), καὶ (and) ἀπενεχθῆναι (was carried away) αὐτὸν (he) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham). ἀπέθανεν (Died) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) πλούσιος (rich man) καὶ (and) ἐτάφη (was buried). ²³ καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ᾅδῃ (Hades), ἐπάρας (having lifted up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὑπάρχων (being) ἐν (in) βασάνοις (torment), ὁρᾷ (he sees) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar), καὶ (and) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κόλποις (bosom) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁴ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) φωνήσας (having cried out) εἶπεν (said), ‘Πάτερ (Father) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ἐλέησόν (have mercy on) με (me) καὶ (and) πέμψον (send) Λάζαρον (Lazarus), ἵνα (that) βάψῃ (he might dip) τὸ (the) ἄκρον (tip) τοῦ (of the) δακτύλου (finger) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὕδατος (in water) καὶ (and) καταψύξῃ (cool) τὴν (the) γλῶσσάν (tongue) μου (of me); ὅτι (for) ὀδυνῶμαι (I am suffering) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φλογὶ (flame) ταύτῃ (this).’ ²⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ‘Τέκνον (Child), μνήσθητι (remember) ὅτι (that) ἀπέλαβες (you did fully receive) τὰ (the things) ἀγαθά (good) σου (of you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (lifetime) σου (of you), καὶ (and) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ὁμοίως (likewise) τὰ (the things) κακά (evil). νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ὧδε (here) παρακαλεῖται (he is comforted); σὺ (you) δὲ (now) ὀδυνᾶσαι (are suffering).

²⁸ στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὰς (them), ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Θυγατέρες (Daughters) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem), μὴ (not) κλαίετε (weep) ἐπ’ (for) ἐμέ (Me), πλὴν (but) ἐφ’ (for) ἑαυτὰς (yourselves) κλαίετε (weep), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you). ²⁹ ὅτι (For) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἔρχονται (are coming) ἡμέραι (days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ἐροῦσιν (they will say), ‘Μακάριαι (Blessed are) αἱ (the) στεῖραι (barren), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) κοιλίαι (wombs) αἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἐγέννησαν (did bear), καὶ (and) μαστοὶ (breasts) οἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἔθρεψαν (nursed).’

⁹ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (however) βουλόμενοι (desiring) πλουτεῖν (to be rich) ἐμπίπτουσιν (fall) εἰς (into) πειρασμὸν (temptation) καὶ (and) παγίδα (a snare), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) πολλὰς (many) ἀνοήτους (foolish) καὶ (and) βλαβεράς (harmful), αἵτινες (which) βυθίζουσιν (plunge) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men) εἰς (into) ὄλεθρον (ruin) καὶ (and) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ¹⁰ ῥίζα (A root) γὰρ (for) πάντων (of all kinds) τῶν (-) κακῶν (of evils) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) φιλαργυρία (love of money), ἧς (which) τινες (some) ὀρεγόμενοι (stretching after) ἀπεπλανήθησαν (have been seduced) ἀπὸ (away from) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) περιέπειραν (have pierced) ὀδύναις (with sorrows) πολλαῖς (many).

¹¹ ἀνέτειλεν (Has risen) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) σὺν (with) τῷ (its) καύσωνι (burning heat) καὶ (and) ἐξήρανεν (withered) τὸν (the) χόρτον (grass), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἄνθος (flower) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἐξέπεσεν (has fallen), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) εὐπρέπεια (beauty) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (appearance) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἀπώλετο (has perished). οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) πλούσιος (rich man) ἐν (in the midst of) ταῖς (the) πορείαις (pursuits) αὐτοῦ (of him) μαρανθήσεται (will fade away).

⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) ἠτιμάσατε (have dishonored) τὸν (the) πτωχόν (poor). οὐχ (Not) οἱ (the) πλούσιοι (rich) καταδυναστεύουσιν (are oppressing) ὑμῶν (you) καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἕλκουσιν (dragging) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) κριτήρια (court)?

⁹ ταλαιπωρήσατε (Be grieved), καὶ (and) πενθήσατε (mourn), καὶ (and) κλαύσατε (weep). ὁ (The) γέλως (laughter) ὑμῶν (of you), εἰς (to) πένθος (mourning) μετατραπήτω (let be turned), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) εἰς (to) κατήφειαν (gloom).

¹³ Ἄγε (Come) νῦν (now), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), “Σήμερον (Today) ἢ (or) αὔριον (tomorrow) πορευσόμεθα (we will go) εἰς (into) τήνδε (such) τὴν (-) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) ποιήσομεν (will spend) ἐκεῖ (there) ἐνιαυτὸν (a year), καὶ (and) ἐμπορευσόμεθα (will trade), καὶ (and) κερδήσομεν (will make a profit),”

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) οἱ (the) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μεγιστᾶνες (great ones), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) χιλίαρχοι (commanders), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πλούσιοι (rich), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἰσχυροὶ (powerful), καὶ (and) πᾶς (every) δοῦλος (slave) καὶ (and) ἐλεύθερος (free), ἔκρυψαν (hid) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) εἰς (in) τὰ (the) σπήλαια (caves), καὶ (and) εἰς (among) τὰς (the) πέτρας (rocks) τῶν (of the) ὀρέων (mountains). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (they say) τοῖς (to the) ὄρεσιν (mountains) καὶ (and) ταῖς (to the) πέτραις (rocks), “Πέσετε (Fall) ἐφ’ (on) ἡμᾶς (us) καὶ (and) κρύψατε (hide) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) προσώπου (the face) τοῦ (of the One) καθημένου (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὀργῆς (wrath) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), ¹⁷ ὅτι (because) ἦλθεν (has come) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἡ (-) μεγάλη (great) τῆς (of the) ὀργῆς (wrath) αὐτῶν (of Them), καὶ (and) τίς (who) δύναται (is able) σταθῆναι (to stand)?”
