¹⁶ ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) ὁ (-) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐν (in) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), φῶς (a light) εἶδεν (have seen) μέγα (great), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) καθημένοις (sitting) ἐν (in the) χώρᾳ (land) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (shadow) θανάτου (of death), φῶς (a light) ἀνέτειλεν (has dawned) αὐτοῖς (on them).”

²² Ὁ (The) λύχνος (lamp) τοῦ (of the) σώματός (body) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye). ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) ᾖ (is) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) ἁπλοῦς (clear), ὅλον (the whole) τὸ (-) σῶμά (body) σου (of you) φωτεινὸν (full of light) ἔσται (will be). ²³ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) πονηρὸς (evil) ᾖ (is), ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) σου (of you) σκοτεινὸν (full of darkness) ἔσται (will be). εἰ (If) οὖν (then) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τὸ (that is) ἐν (within) σοὶ (you) σκότος (darkness) ἐστίν (is), τὸ (that) σκότος (darkness) πόσον (how great)!

⁷⁷ τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) γνῶσιν (knowledge) σωτηρίας (of salvation) τῷ (to) λαῷ (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of the sins) αὐτῶν (of them),

⁷⁹ ἐπιφᾶναι (to shine upon) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (in the shadow) θανάτου (of death) καθημένοις (sitting); τοῦ (-) κατευθῦναι (to direct) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) ὁδὸν (the way) εἰρήνης (of peace).”

³² φῶς (a light) εἰς (for) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) λαοῦ (of the people) σου (of You), Ἰσραήλ (Israel).”

¹⁸ “Πνεῦμα (The Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμέ (Me), Οὗ (of which) εἵνεκεν (because) ἔχρισέν (He has anointed) με (Me) Εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach good news) πτωχοῖς (to the poor). Ἀπέσταλκέν (He has sent) με (Me) κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) αἰχμαλώτοις (to the captives) ἄφεσιν (deliverance), Καὶ (and) τυφλοῖς (to the blind) ἀνάβλεψιν (recovery of sight), Ἀποστεῖλαι (to send forth) τεθραυσμένους (the oppressed) ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (deliverance),

²¹ Ὅταν (When) ὁ (the) ἰσχυρὸς (strong man) καθωπλισμένος (being armed) φυλάσσῃ (might guard) τὴν (-) ἑαυτοῦ (his) αὐλήν (house), ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace) ἐστὶν (are) τὰ (the) ὑπάρχοντα (possessions) αὐτοῦ (of him); ²² ἐπὰν (when) δὲ (however) ἰσχυρότερος (one stronger) αὐτοῦ (than he), ἐπελθὼν (having come upon him), νικήσῃ (shall overcome) αὐτόν (him), τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) αὐτοῦ (of him) αἴρει (he takes away) ἐφ’ (in) ᾗ (which) ἐπεποίθει (he had trusted), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) σκῦλα (plunder) αὐτοῦ (of him) διαδίδωσιν (he divides).

⁴⁵ τότε (Then) διήνοιξεν (He opened) αὐτῶν (their) τὸν (-) νοῦν (mind) τοῦ (-) συνιέναι (to understand) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures).

⁴⁷ καὶ (and) κηρυχθῆναι (to be proclaimed) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μετάνοιαν (repentance) εἰς (and) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) εἰς (to) πάντα (all) τὰ (-) ἔθνη (nations), ἀρξάμενοι (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

⁴ ἐν (In) αὐτῷ (Him) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men). ⁵ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) φαίνει (shines), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) αὐτὸ (it) οὐ (not) κατέλαβεν (overcame). ⁶ Ἐγένετο (There came) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀπεσταλμένος (having been sent) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God); ὄνομα (the name) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰωάννης (was John). ⁷ οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (as) μαρτυρίαν (a witness), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light), ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) πιστεύσωσιν (might believe) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁸ οὐκ (Not) ἦν (was) ἐκεῖνος (He) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might witness) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light). ⁹ Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

¹⁹ Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κρίσις (judgement), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) ἢ (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light); ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds).

¹⁰ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Εἰ (If) ᾔδεις (you had known) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (it is) ὁ (-) λέγων (saying) σοι (to you), ‘Δός (Give) μοι (Me) πεῖν (to drink),’ σὺ (you) ἂν (-) ᾔτησας (would have asked) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (He would have given) ἄν (-) σοι (to you) ὕδωρ (water) ζῶν (living).”

¹⁴ ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) πίῃ (may drink) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) δώσω (will give) αὐτῷ (him), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) διψήσει (will thirst), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). ἀλλὰ (Instead), τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water) ὃ (that) δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) γενήσεται (will become) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) πηγὴ (a spring) ὕδατος (of water), ἁλλομένου (welling up) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”

³⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture): ‘Ποταμοὶ (Rivers) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) κοιλίας (belly) αὐτοῦ (of him) ῥεύσουσιν (will flow) ὕδατος (of water) ζῶντος (living).’” ³⁹ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) εἶπεν (He said) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), οὗ (whom) ἔμελλον (were about) λαμβάνειν (to receive) οἱ (those) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); οὔπω (not yet given) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit), ὅτι (because) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐδέπω (not yet) ἐδοξάσθη (was glorified).

¹² Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world); ὁ (the one) ἀκολουθῶν (following) ἐμοὶ* (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) περιπατήσῃ (shall walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἕξει (will have) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).”

⁵ ὅταν (While) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὦ (I shall be), φῶς (the light) εἰμι (I am) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).”

³⁹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰς (For) κρίμα (judgment) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) τοῦτον (this) ἦλθον (came), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέπωσιν (may see); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) βλέποντες (seeing), τυφλοὶ (blind) γένωνται (may become).”

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going). ³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

¹⁷ ἁγίασον (Sanctify) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth); ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὁ (-) σὸς (of You) ἀλήθειά (truth) ἐστιν (is).

³⁸ Πέτρος (Peter) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Μετανοήσατε (Repent),” [φησίν] (he declared), “Καὶ (and) βαπτισθήτω (be baptized), ἕκαστος (every one) ὑμῶν (of you), ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) εἰς (for the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (of the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) λήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit).

¹⁹ μετανοήσατε (Repent), οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) ἐπιστρέψατε (turn again), πρὸς (for) τὸ (the) ἐξαλειφθῆναι (blotting out) ὑμῶν (of your) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins),

³¹ τοῦτον (Him) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Ἀρχηγὸν (as Prince) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρα (Savior) ὕψωσεν (exalted) τῇ (by the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) μετάνοιαν (repentance) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) καὶ (and) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins).

¹⁷ Ἀπῆλθεν (Went away) δὲ (then) Ἁνανίας (Ananias) καὶ (and) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house); καὶ (and) ἐπιθεὶς (having laid) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (him) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), εἶπεν (he said), “Σαοὺλ (Saul) ἀδελφέ (Brother), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἀπέσταλκέν (has sent) με (me), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ὀφθείς (having appeared) σοι (to you) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road) ᾗ (by which) ἤρχου (you were coming), ὅπως (that) ἀναβλέψῃς (you may see again) καὶ (and) πλησθῇς (be filled) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy).” ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) ἀπέπεσαν (fell) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) ὡς (something like) λεπίδες (scales), ἀνέβλεψέν (he regained his sight) τε (also). καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up), ἐβαπτίσθη (he was baptized);

⁴³ τούτῳ (To Him) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets) μαρτυροῦσιν (bear witness) ἄφεσιν (that forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) λαβεῖν (receives) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματος (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πάντα (everyone) τὸν (-) πιστεύοντα (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him).”

³⁸ Γνωστὸν (Known) οὖν (therefore) ἔστω (be it) ὑμῖν (to you), ἄνδρες (men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) διὰ (through) τούτου (this One), ὑμῖν (to you) ἄφεσις (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καταγγέλλεται (is proclaimed). ³⁹ καὶ (And) ἀπὸ (from) πάντων (all things) ὧν (from which) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθητε (you were able) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (the law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses) δικαιωθῆναι (to be justified), ἐν (in) τούτῳ (Him) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) δικαιοῦται (is justified).

⁴⁷ οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἐντέταλται (has commanded) ἡμῖν (us) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord): ‘Τέθεικά (I have set) σε (you) εἰς (for) φῶς (a light) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), τοῦ (-) εἶναί (to be) σε (you) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἕως (to) ἐσχάτου (the uttermost part) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).’”

⁹ καὶ (and) οὐθὲν (not one) διέκρινεν (He made distinction) μεταξὺ (between) ἡμῶν (us) τε (also) καὶ (and) αὐτῶν (them), τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) καθαρίσας (having purified) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them).

²¹ διαμαρτυρόμενος (earnestly testifying) Ἰουδαίοις (to the Jewish) τε (both) καὶ (and) Ἕλλησιν (to Greeks), τὴν (-) εἰς (in) Θεὸν (God) μετάνοιαν (repentance) καὶ (and) πίστιν (faith) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

³² Καὶ (And) τὰ (-) νῦν (now) παρατίθεμαι (I commit) ὑμᾶς (you) τῷ (to) θεῷ* (God) καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τῷ (-) δυναμένῳ (being able) οἰκοδομῆσαι (to build up) καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (you) κληρονομίαν (an inheritance) ἐν (among) τοῖς (those) ἡγιασμένοις (having been sanctified) πᾶσιν (all).

²³ εἰ (that) παθητὸς (would suffer) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ); εἰ (as) πρῶτος (first) ἐξ (through) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) νεκρῶν (from the dead), φῶς (light) μέλλει (He is about) καταγγέλλειν (to preach) τῷ (to) τε (both) λαῷ (our people) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles).”

⁶ καθάπερ (just as) καὶ (also) Δαυὶδ (David) λέγει (declares) τὸν (the) μακαρισμὸν (blessedness) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ᾧ (to whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) λογίζεται (credits) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) χωρὶς (apart from) ἔργων (works): ⁷ “Μακάριοι (Blessed) ὧν (are they of whom) ἀφέθησαν (are forgiven) αἱ (the) ἀνομίαι (lawless deeds), καὶ (and) ὧν (of whom) ἐπεκαλύφθησαν (are covered) αἱ (the) ἁμαρτίαι (sins); ⁸ μακάριος (blessed) ἀνὴρ (the man) οὗ (against whom) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) λογίσηται (will reckon) Κύριος (the Lord) ἁμαρτίαν (sin).” ⁹ Ὁ (Is the) μακαρισμὸς (blessing) οὖν (then) οὗτος (this) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) περιτομὴν (circumcision), ἢ (or) καὶ (also) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) ἀκροβυστίαν (uncircumcision)? λέγομεν (We are saying) γάρ (for) Ἐλογίσθη (was credited) τῷ (-) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) εἰς (as) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness).

¹ Δικαιωθέντες (Having been justified) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχομεν* (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ² δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) καὶ (also) τὴν (-) προσαγωγὴν (access) ἐσχήκαμεν (we have) τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἑστήκαμεν (we stand); καὶ (and) καυχώμεθα (we boast) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τέκνα (children), καὶ (also) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κληρονόμοι (heirs) μὲν (indeed) Θεοῦ (of God), συνκληρονόμοι (joint-heirs) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἴπερ (if indeed) συμπάσχομεν (we suffer with Him), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) συνδοξασθῶμεν (we may be glorified together).

¹⁰ οὔτε (nor) κλέπται (thieves), οὔτε (nor) πλεονέκται (coveters), οὐ (not) μέθυσοι (drunkards), οὐ (nor) λοίδοροι (verbal abusers), οὐχ (nor) ἅρπαγες (swindlers), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit). ¹¹ καὶ (And) ταῦτά (such) τινες (some of) ἦτε (you were); ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπελούσασθε (you were washed), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡγιάσθητε (you were sanctified), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐδικαιώθητε (you were justified), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁶ ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) εἰπών (having said), “Ἐκ (Out of) σκότους (darkness) φῶς (light) λάμψει (shall shine),” ὃς (who) ἔλαμψεν (shone) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) πρὸς (for the) φωτισμὸν (radiance) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) προσώπῳ (the face) [Ἰησοῦ] (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁴ Μὴ (Not) γίνεσθε (become) ἑτεροζυγοῦντες (unequally yoked together) ἀπίστοις (with unbelievers); τίς (what) γὰρ (for) μετοχὴ (partnership have) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἀνομίᾳ (lawlessness)? ἢ (Or) τίς (what) κοινωνία (fellowship) φωτὶ (light) πρὸς (with) σκότος (darkness)?

²⁰ Χριστῷ (Christ) συνεσταύρωμαι (I have been crucified with); ζῶ (I live) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγώ (I); ζῇ (lives) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) Χριστός (Christ); ὃ (that which) δὲ (then) νῦν (now) ζῶ (I live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐν (through) πίστει (faith) ζῶ (I live), τῇ (that) τοῦ (from the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντός (having loved) με (me) καὶ (and) παραδόντος (having given up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me).

² τοῦτο (This) μόνον (only) θέλω (I wish) μαθεῖν (to learn) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐλάβετε (did you receive), ἢ (or) ἐξ (by) ἀκοῆς (hearing) πίστεως (of faith)?

¹⁴ ἵνα (so that) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἡ (the) εὐλογία (blessing) τοῦ (-) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham) γένηται (might come), ἐν (in) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστῷ (Christ), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) λάβωμεν (we might receive), διὰ (through) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith).

⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἔχομεν (we have) τὴν (-) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὴν (the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (-) παραπτωμάτων (of trespasses), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

¹¹ ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) ἐκληρώθημεν (we have obtained an inheritance), προορισθέντες (having been predestined) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (the purpose) τοῦ (of the One) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ἐνεργοῦντος (working) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) βουλὴν (counsel) τοῦ (of the) θελήματος (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

¹⁴ ὅ* (who) ἐστιν (is) ἀρραβὼν (the guarantee) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) ἀπολύτρωσιν (the redemption) τῆς (of the) περιποιήσεως (acquired possession), εἰς (to) ἔπαινον (the praise) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁸ πεφωτισμένους (being enlightened) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), εἰς (in order for) τὸ (-) εἰδέναι (to know) ὑμᾶς (you) τίς (what) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐλπὶς (hope) τῆς (of the) κλήσεως (calling) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τίς (what) ὁ (are the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints),

⁸ Τῇ (-) γὰρ (For) χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (yourselves); Θεοῦ (it is of God) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift),

¹⁸ ἐσκοτωμένοι (being darkened) τῇ (in the) διανοίᾳ (understanding), ὄντες (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) ζωῆς (life) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἄγνοιαν (ignorance) τὴν (-) οὖσαν (being) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) πώρωσιν (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them),

⁸ Ἦτε (You were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness); νῦν (now) δὲ (however), φῶς (light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord); ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk)—

¹⁴ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἔγειρε (Awake you), ὁ (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping), καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).”

⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) δέ (however), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (are) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ὑμᾶς (you) ὡς (like) κλέπτης (a thief) καταλάβῃ (should overtake). ⁵ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you), υἱοὶ (sons) φωτός (of light) ἐστε (are), καὶ (and) υἱοὶ (sons) ἡμέρας (of day). Οὐκ (Not) ἐσμὲν (we are) νυκτὸς (of night) οὐδὲ (nor) σκότους (of darkness). ⁶ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) μὴ (not) καθεύδωμεν (we should sleep) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) λοιποί (others), ἀλλὰ (but) γρηγορῶμεν (we should watch) καὶ (and) νήφωμεν (we should be sober). ⁷ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) καθεύδοντες (sleeping), νυκτὸς (by night) καθεύδουσιν (sleep); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεθυσκόμενοι (becoming drunk), νυκτὸς (by night) μεθύουσιν (get drunk). ⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however), ἡμέρας (of the day) ὄντες (being), νήφωμεν (should be sober), ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) θώρακα (the breastplate) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), καὶ (and) περικεφαλαίαν (the helmet) ἐλπίδα (the hope) σωτηρίας (of salvation),

²⁶ καὶ (and) ἀνανήψωσιν (they might come to their senses) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil) παγίδος (snare), ἐζωγρημένοι (having been captured) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐκείνου (his) θέλημα (will).

⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ⁶ οὗ (whom) ἐξέχεεν (He poured out) ἐφ’ (on) ἡμᾶς (us) πλουσίως (richly) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us),

¹⁴ Ἐπεὶ (Since) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) παιδία (children) κεκοινώνηκεν (have partaken) αἵματος (of blood) καὶ (and) σαρκός (of flesh) καὶ (also), αὐτὸς (He) παραπλησίως (likewise) μετέσχεν (took part in) τῶν (the) αὐτῶν (same things), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τοῦ (His) θανάτου (death), καταργήσῃ (He might destroy) τὸν (the one) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) ἔχοντα (holding) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), τὸν (the) διάβολον (devil), ¹⁵ καὶ (and) ἀπαλλάξῃ (might set free) τούτους (those) ὅσοι (who) φόβῳ (fear) θανάτου (of death) διὰ (through) παντὸς (all) τοῦ (their time) ζῆν (to live), ἔνοχοι (subject) ἦσαν (were) δουλείας (to slavery).

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), διαθήκης (of a covenant) καινῆς (new) μεσίτης (the mediator) ἐστίν (He is), ὅπως (so that), θανάτου (death) γενομένου (having taken place), εἰς (for) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τῶν (of the) ἐπὶ (under) τῇ (the) πρώτῃ (first) διαθήκῃ (covenant) παραβάσεων (transgressions), τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) λάβωσιν (might receive) οἱ (those) κεκλημένοι (having been called), τῆς (of the) αἰωνίου (eternal) κληρονομίας (inheritance).

¹⁰ ἐν (By) ᾧ (that) θελήματι (will), ἡγιασμένοι (having been sanctified) ἐσμὲν (we are), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) προσφορᾶς (offering) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐφάπαξ (once for all).

¹⁴ μιᾷ (By one) γὰρ (for) προσφορᾷ (offering), τετελείωκεν (He has perfected) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) διηνεκὲς (all time) τοὺς (those) ἁγιαζομένους (being sanctified).

⁶ χωρὶς (Without) δὲ (now) πίστεως (faith), ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) εὐαρεστῆσαι (to please Him). πιστεῦσαι (To believe) γὰρ (for) δεῖ (it behooves) τὸν (the one) προσερχόμενον (drawing near) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (He exists), καὶ (and that) τοῖς (to those) ἐκζητοῦσιν (earnestly seeking out) αὐτὸν (Him), μισθαποδότης (a rewarder) γίνεται (He becomes).

⁵ Ἀκούσατε (Listen), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (my) ἀγαπητοί (beloved). οὐχ (Not) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐξελέξατο (has chosen) τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) τῷ (-) κόσμῳ (in this world) πλουσίους (to be rich) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith) καὶ (and) κληρονόμους (heirs) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἧς (that) ἐπηγγείλατο (He promised) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him)?

⁴ εἰς (to) κληρονομίαν (an inheritance) ἄφθαρτον (imperishable) καὶ (and) ἀμίαντον (undefiled) καὶ (and) ἀμάραντον (unfading), τετηρημένην (being reserved) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) εἰς (for) ὑμᾶς (you),

⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) γένος (are a race) ἐκλεκτόν (chosen), βασίλειον (a royal) ἱεράτευμα (priesthood), ἔθνος (a nation) ἅγιον (holy), λαὸς (a people) εἰς (for His) περιποίησιν (possession), ὅπως (so that) τὰς (the) ἀρετὰς (excellencies) ἐξαγγείλητε (you may proclaim) τοῦ (of the One) ἐκ (out of) σκότους (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καλέσαντος (having called), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) θαυμαστὸν (marvelous) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φῶς (light),

²⁵ Ἦτε (You were) γὰρ (for) ὡς (like) πρόβατα (sheep) πλανώμενοι (going astray), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπεστράφητε (you have returned) νῦν (now) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) Ποιμένα (Shepherd) καὶ (and) Ἐπίσκοπον (Overseer) τῶν (of the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁹ ἐὰν (If) ὁμολογῶμεν (we should confess) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us), πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (He is) καὶ (and) δίκαιος (just), ἵνα (that) ἀφῇ (He may forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰς (our) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might cleanse) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀδικίας (unrighteousness).

⁸ πάλιν (Again), ἐντολὴν (a commandment) καινὴν (new) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθὲς (true) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true) ἤδη (already) φαίνει (shines). ⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now).

¹² Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), τεκνία (little children), ὅτι (because) ἀφέωνται (have been forgiven) ὑμῖν (your) αἱ (-) ἁμαρτίαι (sins) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁸ ὁ (The one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστίν (is), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἁμαρτάνει (has been sinning). εἰς (For) τοῦτο (this reason) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) λύσῃ (He might destroy) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil).

¹⁹ οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐσμεν (we are), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὅλος (whole), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πονηρῷ (evil one) κεῖται (lies).

¹ Ἰούδας (Jude), Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) δοῦλος (servant), ἀδελφὸς (brother) δὲ (then) Ἰακώβου (of James), Τοῖς (To those) ἐν (in) Θεῷ (God) Πατρὶ (the Father) ἠγαπημένοις (having been loved) καὶ (and) Ἰησοῦ (in Jesus) Χριστῷ (Christ) τετηρημένοις (having been kept) κλητοῖς (called).

²⁷ καὶ (And) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθῃ (shall enter) εἰς (into) αὐτὴν (it) πᾶν (anything) κοινὸν (defiling), καὶ (and) ὁ (those) ποιῶν (practicing) βδέλυγμα (abomination) καὶ (and) ψεῦδος (a lie), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) οἱ (those) γεγραμμένοι (having been written) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βιβλίῳ (book) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb).
