¹ Φῆστος (Festus) οὖν (therefore) ἐπιβὰς (having arrived in) τῇ (the) ἐπαρχείᾳ* (province), μετὰ (after) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) ἀνέβη (he went up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἀπὸ (from) Καισαρείας (Caesarea). ² ἐνεφάνισάν (Made a presentation before) τε (then) αὐτῷ (him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (chiefs) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul), καὶ (and) παρεκάλουν (they were begging) αὐτὸν (him), ³ αἰτούμενοι (asking) χάριν (a favor) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (him), ὅπως (that) μεταπέμψηται (he would summon) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἐνέδραν (an ambush) ποιοῦντες (forming) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) αὐτὸν (him) κατὰ (on) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way). ⁴ Ὁ (-) μὲν (Indeed) οὖν (therefore) Φῆστος (Festus) ἀπεκρίθη (answered that) τηρεῖσθαι (is to be kept) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) εἰς (in) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea); ἑαυτὸν (he himself) δὲ (now) μέλλειν (is about) ἐν (in) τάχει (quickness) ἐκπορεύεσθαι (to set out). ⁵ “Οἱ (Those) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you),” φησίν (he says), “Δυνατοὶ (those in power), συνκαταβάντες (having gone down too), εἴ (if) τί (anything) ἐστιν (there is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνδρὶ (man) ἄτοπον (wrong), κατηγορείτωσαν (let them accuse) αὐτοῦ (him).” ⁶ Διατρίψας (Having spent) δὲ (then) ἐν (with) αὐτοῖς (them) ἡμέρας (days) οὐ (not) πλείους (more than) ὀκτὼ (eight) ἢ (or) δέκα (ten), καταβὰς (having gone down) εἰς (to) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea), τῇ (on the) ἐπαύριον (next day) καθίσας (having sat) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) ἀχθῆναι (to be brought). ⁷ παραγενομένου (Having arrived) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he), περιέστησαν (stood around) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) καταβεβηκότες (having come down) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), πολλὰ (many) καὶ (and) βαρέα (weighty) αἰτιώματα (charges) καταφέροντες (bringing), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυον (they were able) ἀποδεῖξαι (to prove). ⁸ Τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ἀπολογουμένου (made his defense) ὅτι (-): “Οὔτε (Neither) εἰς (against) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), οὔτε (nor) εἰς (against) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), οὔτε (nor) εἰς (against) Καίσαρά (Caesar), τι (in anything) ἥμαρτον (have I sinned).” ⁹ Ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus) δὲ (however), θέλων (wishing) τοῖς (on the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) χάριν (a favor) καταθέσθαι (to lay), ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul), εἶπεν (said), “Θέλεις (Are you willing) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἀναβὰς (having gone up), ἐκεῖ (there) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things) κριθῆναι (to be judged) ἐπ’ (before) ἐμοῦ (me)?” ¹⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Ἑστὼς (Standing) «ἐπὶ (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) Καίσαρος» (of Caesar) εἰμι (I am), οὗ (where) με (me) δεῖ (it behooves) κρίνεσθαι (to be judged). Ἰουδαίους (To the Jews) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἠδίκησα* (I have done wrong), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) κάλλιον (very well) ἐπιγινώσκεις (know). ¹¹ εἰ (If) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἀδικῶ (I do wrong), καὶ (and) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) πέπραχά (have done) τι (anything), οὐ (not) παραιτοῦμαι (I do refuse) τὸ (-) ἀποθανεῖν (to die). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (there is) ὧν (of which) οὗτοι (they) κατηγοροῦσίν (can accuse) μου (me), οὐδείς (no one) με (me) δύναται (can) αὐτοῖς (to them) χαρίσασθαι (give up). Καίσαρα (To Caesar) ἐπικαλοῦμαι (I appeal)!” ¹² Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus), συλλαλήσας* (having conferred) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) συμβουλίου (Council), ἀπεκρίθη (answered), “Καίσαρα (To Caesar) ἐπικέκλησαι (You have appealed); ἐπὶ (to) Καίσαρα (Caesar) πορεύσῃ (you will go)!” ¹³ Ἡμερῶν (Days) δὲ (now) διαγενομένων (having passed) τινῶν (some), Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) καὶ (and) Βερνίκη (Bernice) κατήντησαν (came down) εἰς (to) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea), ἀσπασάμενοι (greeting) τὸν (-) Φῆστον (Festus). ¹⁴ ὡς (As) δὲ (now) πλείους (many) ἡμέρας (days) διέτριβον (they stayed) (however) τινα (certain) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἰδίας (own) δεισιδαιμονίας (religion) εἶχον (they had) πρὸς (against) αὐτὸν (him), καὶ (and) περί (concerning) τινος (a certain) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τεθνηκότος (having been dead), ὃν (whom) ἔφασκεν (was affirming) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) ζῆν (to be alive). ²⁰ Ἀπορούμενος (Being perplexed) δὲ (now), ἐγὼ (I) τὴν (-) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (this) ζήτησιν (inquiry) ἔλεγον (was asking) εἰ (if) βούλοιτο (he was willing) πορεύεσθαι (to go) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) κἀκεῖ (and there) κρίνεσθαι (to be judged) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things). ²¹ τοῦ (-) δὲ (But) Παύλου (of Paul) ἐπικαλεσαμένου (having appealed for) τηρηθῆναι (to be kept) αὐτὸν (himself) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) τοῦ (-) Σεβαστοῦ (Emperor's) διάγνωσιν (decision), ἐκέλευσα (I commanded) τηρεῖσθαι (to be kept) αὐτὸν (him) ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀναπέμψω (I might send) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) Καίσαρα (Caesar).” ²² Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) δὲ (then) πρὸς (said to) τὸν (-) Φῆστον (Festus), “Ἐβουλόμην (I have been wanting) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (myself) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear).” “Αὔριον (Tomorrow),” φησίν (he says), “Ἀκούσῃ (you will hear) αὐτοῦ (him).” ²³ Τῇ (On the) οὖν (therefore) ἐπαύριον (next day), ἐλθόντος (having come) τοῦ (-) Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa) καὶ (and) τῆς (-) Βερνίκης (Bernice) μετὰ (with) πολλῆς (great) φαντασίας (pomp), καὶ (and) εἰσελθόντων (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἀκροατήριον (audience hall), σύν (with) τε (both) χιλιάρχοις (the commanders) καὶ (and) ἀνδράσιν (men) τοῖς (-) κατ’ (in) ἐξοχὴν (prominence) τῆς (in the) πόλεως (city), καὶ (and) κελεύσαντος (having commanded) τοῦ (-) Φήστου (Festus), ἤχθη (was brought in) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul). ²⁴ Καί (And) φησιν (says) ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus), “Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa) βασιλεῦ (King), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) συμπαρόντες (being present with) ἡμῖν (us) ἄνδρες (men), θεωρεῖτε (you see) τοῦτον (this one), περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐνέτυχόν (pleaded) μοι (with me), ἔν (in) τε (both) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἐνθάδε (here), βοῶντες (crying out that) μὴ (not) δεῖν (he ought) αὐτὸν (of him) ζῆν (to live) μηκέτι (no longer). ²⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), κατελαβόμην (having understood) μηδὲν (nothing) ἄξιον (worthy) αὐτὸν (him) θανάτου (of death) πεπραχέναι (to have done), αὐτοῦ (himself) δὲ (and) τούτου (of this one) ἐπικαλεσαμένου (having appealed to) τὸν (the) Σεβαστὸν (Emperor), ἔκρινα (I determined) πέμπειν (to send him), ²⁶ περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom), ἀσφαλές (definite) τι (anything) γράψαι (to write) τῷ (to) κυρίῳ (my lord), οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have). διὸ (Therefore) προήγαγον (I have brought) αὐτὸν (him) ἐφ’ (before) ὑμῶν (you all), καὶ (and) μάλιστα write). ²⁷ ἄλογον (Absurd) γάρ (for) μοι (to me) δοκεῖ (it seems) πέμποντα (in sending) δέσμιον (a prisoner), μὴ (not) καὶ (also) τὰς (the) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (him) αἰτίας (charges) σημᾶναι (to specify).”

⁴⁰ Φίλιππος (Philip) δὲ (however) εὑρέθη (was found) εἰς (at) Ἄζωτον (Azotus), καὶ (and) διερχόμενος (passing through), εὐηγγελίζετο (he was proclaiming the gospel) τὰς (to the) πόλεις (towns) πάσας (all), ἕως (until) τοῦ (-) ἐλθεῖν (coming) αὐτὸν (his) εἰς (to) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea).

²² καὶ (and) κατελθὼν (having landed) εἰς (at) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea), ἀναβὰς (having gone up) καὶ (and) ἀσπασάμενος (having greeted) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church), κατέβη (he went down) εἰς (to) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch).

¹⁵ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (now) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) ταύτας (these), ἐπισκευασάμενοι (having packed the baggage), ἀνεβαίνομεν (we started on our way up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem).

³⁴ Ἀναγνοὺς (Having read it) δὲ (then), καὶ (and) ἐπερωτήσας (having asked) ἐκ (from) ποίας (what) ἐπαρχείας (province) ἐστὶν (he is), καὶ (and) πυθόμενος (having learned) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Κιλικίας (Cilicia he is),

⁵ “Οἱ (Those) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you),” φησίν (he says), “Δυνατοὶ (those in power), συνκαταβάντες (having gone down too), εἴ (if) τί (anything) ἐστιν (there is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνδρὶ (man) ἄτοπον (wrong), κατηγορείτωσαν (let them accuse) αὐτοῦ (him).”

¹ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) πέντε (five) ἡμέρας (days), κατέβη (came down) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) Ἁνανίας (Ananias), μετὰ (with) πρεσβυτέρων (elders) τινῶν (some) καὶ (and) ῥήτορος (an orator) Τερτύλλου (Tertullus) τινός (certain), οἵτινες (who) ἐνεφάνισαν (made a representation) τῷ (to the) ἡγεμόνι (governor) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul).

¹⁵ περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom), γενομένου (having been) μου (my) εἰς (in) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ἐνεφάνισαν (made a presentation) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), αἰτούμενοι (asking) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (him) καταδίκην (judgment),

¹² πάντες (All) ἐξέκλιναν (have turned away), ἅμα (together they) ἠχρεώθησαν (have become worthless); οὐκ (none) ἔστιν (there is) ὁ (who) ποιῶν (is practicing) χρηστότητα (good), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἕως (so much as) ἑνός (one). ¹³ τάφος (A grave) ἀνεῳγμένος (having been opened) ὁ (the) λάρυγξ (throat) αὐτῶν (of them is); ταῖς (with the) γλώσσαις (tongues) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐδολιοῦσαν (they keep practicing deceit); ἰὸς (the venom) ἀσπίδων (of vipers) ὑπὸ (is under) τὰ (the) χείλη (lips) αὐτῶν (of them), ¹⁴ ὧν (of whom) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) ἀρᾶς (of cursing) καὶ (and) πικρίας (of bitterness) γέμει (is full); ¹⁵ ὀξεῖς (swift are) οἱ (the) πόδες (feet) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκχέαι (to shed) αἷμα (blood); ¹⁶ σύντριμμα (ruin) καὶ (and) ταλαιπωρία (misery) ἐν (are in) ταῖς (the) ὁδοῖς (paths) αὐτῶν (of them); ¹⁷ καὶ (and) ὁδὸν (the way) εἰρήνης (of peace) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (they have known). ¹⁸ οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (there is) φόβος (fear) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀπέναντι (before) τῶν (the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them).” ¹⁹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) λέγει (says), τοῖς (to those) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) λαλεῖ (it speaks), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (every) στόμα (mouth) φραγῇ (may be stopped), καὶ (and) ὑπόδικος (under judgment) γένηται (may be) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

²³ καὶ (And) ὤμοσεν (he swore) αὐτῇ (to her), “[Πολλά] (Whatever) Ὅ¦τι (that) ἐάν (if) με (me) αἰτήσῃς (you might ask), δώσω (I will give) σοι (you), ἕως (up to) ἡμίσους (half) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) μου (of me).” ²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθοῦσα (having gone out), εἶπεν (she said) τῇ (to the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτῆς (of her), “Τί (What) αἰτήσωμαι (shall I ask)?” Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Τὴν (The) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the one) Βαπτίζοντος (baptizing).” ²⁵ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθοῦσα (having entered) εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) σπουδῆς (haste) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) βασιλέα (king), ᾐτήσατο (she asked), λέγουσα (saying), “Θέλω (I desire) ἵνα (that) ἐξαυτῆς (at once) δῷς (you give) μοι (to me) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist).”

⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἐχάρη (was glad) λίαν (exceedingly); ἦν (he was) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἱκανῶν (a long) χρόνων (time) θέλων (wishing) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτὸν (Him), διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) ἀκούειν (hearing) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him); καὶ (and) ἤλπιζέν (he was hoping) τι (some) σημεῖον (sign) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) γινόμενον (done). ⁹ ἐπηρώτα (He kept questioning) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) λόγοις (words) ἱκανοῖς (many); αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (answered) αὐτῷ (him). ¹⁰ Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing by) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), εὐτόνως (vehemently) κατηγοροῦντες (accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ ἐξουθενήσας (Having set at naught) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), ‹καὶ› (also) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) στρατεύμασιν (troops) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐμπαίξας (having mocked Him), περιβαλὼν (having put on Him) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) λαμπρὰν (splendid), ἀνέπεμψεν (sent back) αὐτὸν (him) τῷ (to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate). ¹² Ἐγένοντο (Became) δὲ (then) φίλοι (friends) ὅ (-) τε (both) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) μετ’ (with) ἀλλήλων (one another); προϋπῆρχον (previously it had been that) γὰρ (for) ἐν (at) ἔχθρᾳ (enmity) ὄντες (they were) πρὸς (between) αὑτούς (themselves). ¹³ Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) δὲ (then), συνκαλεσάμενος (having called together) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἄρχοντας (rulers) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people), ¹⁴ εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Προσηνέγκατέ (You brought) μοι (to me) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) τοῦτον (this), ὡς (as) ἀποστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸν (the) λαόν (people); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἐνώπιον (before) ὑμῶν (you) ἀνακρίνας (having examined Him), οὐθὲν (nothing) εὗρον (found) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this) αἴτιον (guilty) ὧν (of that) κατηγορεῖτε (accusation you are bringing) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (No), οὐδὲ (not even) Ἡρῴδης (Herod did); ἀνέπεμψεν (he sent back) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us). καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) ἐστὶν (is) πεπραγμένον (done) αὐτῷ (by Him). ¹⁶ παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).” ^{17 18} Ἀνέκραγον (They cried out) δὲ (however) παμπληθεὶ* (all together), λέγοντες (saying), “Αἶρε (Away with) τοῦτον (this man), ἀπόλυσον (release) δὲ (now) ἡμῖν (to us) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas),” ¹⁹ ὅστις (who) ἦν (was) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) τινὰ (a certain) γενομένην (having been made) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city), καὶ (and) φόνον (murder), βληθεὶς (having been cast) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison). ²⁰ Πάλιν (Again) δὲ (therefore) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) προσεφώνησεν (called) αὐτοῖς (to them), θέλων (wishing) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ²¹ οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπεφώνουν (they were crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρου (Crucify), σταύρου (crucify) αὐτόν (Him).” ²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) τρίτον (a third time) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did commit) οὗτος (this man)? οὐδὲν (No) αἴτιον (cause) θανάτου (of death) εὗρον (found I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him). παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).” ²³ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπέκειντο (they were urgent), φωναῖς (with voices) μεγάλαις (loud), αἰτούμενοι (asking for) αὐτὸν (Him) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified). καὶ (And) κατίσχυον (were prevailing) αἱ (the) φωναὶ (voices) αὐτῶν (of them). ²⁴ καὶ (and) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐπέκρινεν (sentenced) γενέσθαι (to be done) τὸ (the) αἴτημα (demand) αὐτῶν (of them).

³ καὶ (And) ταῦτα (these things) ποιήσουσιν (they will do), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (they know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐμέ (Me).

² ᾐτήσατο (requested) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐπιστολὰς (letters) εἰς (in) Δαμασκὸν (Damascus) πρὸς (to) τὰς (the) συναγωγάς (synagogues), ὅπως (so that) ἐάν (if) τινας (any) εὕρῃ (he found) τῆς (of the) Ὁδοῦ (way), ὄντας (being) ἄνδρας (men) τε (both) καὶ (and) γυναῖκας (women), δεδεμένους (having bound), ἀγάγῃ (he might bring them) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

²⁴ ἐγνώσθη (became known) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Σαύλῳ (to Saul) ἡ (the) ἐπιβουλὴ (plot) αὐτῶν (of them). παρετηροῦντο (They were closely watching) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) τὰς (the) πύλας (gates) ἡμέρας (day) τε (and) καὶ (also) νυκτὸς (night), ὅπως (so that) αὐτὸν (him) ἀνέλωσιν (they might kill);

¹² Γενομένης (When it was) δὲ (then) ἡμέρας (day), ποιήσαντες (having made) συστροφὴν (a conspiracy), οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἀνεθεμάτισαν (put under an oath) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves), λέγοντες (declaring) μήτε (neither) φαγεῖν (to eat) μήτε (nor) πιεῖν (to drink) ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀποκτείνωσιν (they should kill) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul). ¹³ ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) πλείους (more than) τεσσεράκοντα (forty), οἱ (-) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) συνωμοσίαν (plot) ποιησάμενοι (having made), ¹⁴ οἵτινες (who), προσελθόντες (having come) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχιερεῦσιν (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) πρεσβυτέροις (elders), εἶπαν (said), “Ἀναθέματι (With an oath) ἀνεθεματίσαμεν (we have bound) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves), μηδενὸς (nothing) γεύσασθαι (to eat) ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀποκτείνωμεν (we should kill) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul). ¹⁵ νῦν (Now) οὖν (therefore) ὑμεῖς (you), ἐμφανίσατε (make a report) τῷ (to the) χιλιάρχῳ (commander) σὺν (along with) τῷ (the) συνεδρίῳ (Council), ὅπως (so that) καταγάγῃ (he might bring down) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ὡς (as) μέλλοντας (being about) διαγινώσκειν (to examine) ἀκριβέστερον (more earnestly) τὰ (the things) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (him); ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (then), πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) ἐγγίσαι (drawing near) αὐτὸν (his), ἕτοιμοί (ready) ἐσμεν (are) τοῦ (-) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) αὐτόν (him).”

⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἔδοξα (thought) ἐμαυτῷ (in myself) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) τοῦ (-) Ναζωραίου (of Nazareth), δεῖν (I ought) πολλὰ (many things) ἐναντία (contrary) πρᾶξαι (to do), ¹⁰ ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐποίησα (I did) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem); καὶ (and) πολλούς (many) τε (also) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (in) φυλακαῖς (prisons) κατέκλεισα (locked up), τὴν (the) παρὰ (from) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) ἐξουσίαν (authority) λαβών (having received); ἀναιρουμένων (being put to death) τε (then) αὐτῶν (they), κατήνεγκα (I cast against them) ψῆφον (a vote). ¹¹ καὶ (And) κατὰ (in) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) συναγωγὰς (synagogues), πολλάκις (often) τιμωρῶν (punishing) αὐτοὺς (them), ἠνάγκαζον (I was compelling them) βλασφημεῖν (to blaspheme). περισσῶς (Exceedingly) τε (then) ἐμμαινόμενος (being furious) αὐτοῖς (against them), ἐδίωκον (I kept persecuting them) ἕως (as far as) καὶ (even) εἰς (to) τὰς (-) ἔξω (foreign) πόλεις (cities),

⁸ καὶ (And is it) μὴ (not), καθὼς (as) βλασφημούμεθα (we are slanderously charged), καὶ (and) καθώς (as) φασίν (affirm) τινες (some that) ἡμᾶς (us) λέγειν (to say) ὅτι (-), “Ποιήσωμεν (Let us do) τὰ (things) κακὰ (evil), ἵνα (that) ἔλθῃ (may come) τὰ (the) ἀγαθά (good things)?” ὧν (Their) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation) ἔνδικόν (just) ἐστιν (is).

²³ διαταξάμενος (having commanded) τῷ (the) ἑκατοντάρχῃ (centurion) τηρεῖσθαι (to keep) αὐτὸν (him), ἔχειν (to let him have) τε (then) ἄνεσιν (ease), καὶ (and) μηδένα (not) κωλύειν (to forbid) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὑπηρετεῖν (to minister) αὐτῷ (to him).

²⁹ Ἐξῆλθεν (Went) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἔξω (out) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) φησίν (said), “Τίνα (What) κατηγορίαν (accusation) φέρετε (bring you) ‹κατὰ› (against) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this)?” ³⁰ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦν (were) οὗτος (He) κακὸν (evil) ποιῶν (doing), οὐκ (not) ἄν (-) σοι (to you) παρεδώκαμεν (we would have delivered) αὐτόν (Him).”

¹⁴ Μέλλοντος (Being about) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ἀνοίγειν (to open) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Γαλλίων (Gallio) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), “Εἰ (If) μὲν (indeed) ἦν (it was) ἀδίκημά (unrighteousness) τι (some) ἢ (or) ῥᾳδιούργημα (crime) πονηρόν (wicked), ὦ (O) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), κατὰ (according to) λόγον (reason) ἂν (-) ἀνεσχόμην (I would have endured with) ὑμῶν (you);

³⁰ Μηνυθείσης (It having been disclosed) δέ (then) μοι (to me) ἐπιβουλῆς (of a plot that) εἰς (against) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man) ἔσεσθαι (would be), ἐξαυτῆς (at once) ἔπεμψα (I sent him) πρὸς (to) σέ (you), παραγγείλας (having instructed) καὶ (also) τοῖς (the) κατηγόροις (accusers) λέγειν (to speak) [τὰ] (these things) πρὸς (against) αὐτὸν (him) ἐπὶ (before) σοῦ (you).”

⁸ παρ’ (From) οὗ (him) δυνήσῃ (you will be able) αὐτὸς (yourself), ἀνακρίνας (having examined him) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τούτων (these things), ἐπιγνῶναι (to know) ὧν (of which) ἡμεῖς (we) κατηγοροῦμεν (accuse) αὐτοῦ (him).”

¹⁶ πρὸς (to) οὓς (whom) ἀπεκρίθην (I answered) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (it is) ἔθος (the custom) Ῥωμαίοις (with Romans) χαρίζεσθαί (to give up) τινα (any) ἄνθρωπον (man) πρὶν (before) ἢ (that) ὁ (the one) κατηγορούμενος (being accused) κατὰ (to) πρόσωπον (face) ἔχοι (may have it) τοὺς (the) κατηγόρους (accusers) τόπον (the opportunity), τε (and) ἀπολογίας (of defense) λάβοι (he may have) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ἐγκλήματος (accusation).

¹⁸ περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom), σταθέντες (having stood up), οἱ (the) κατήγοροι (accusers) οὐδεμίαν (no) αἰτίαν (charge) ἔφερον (were bringing) ὧν (of which) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπενόουν (was expecting) πονηρῶν (crimes). ¹⁹ ζητήματα (Questions) δέ (however) τινα (certain) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἰδίας (own) δεισιδαιμονίας (religion) εἶχον (they had) πρὸς (against) αὐτὸν (him), καὶ (and) περί (concerning) τινος (a certain) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τεθνηκότος (having been dead), ὃν (whom) ἔφασκεν (was affirming) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) ζῆν (to be alive).

²⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), κατελαβόμην (having understood) μηδὲν (nothing) ἄξιον (worthy) αὐτὸν (him) θανάτου (of death) πεπραχέναι (to have done), αὐτοῦ (himself) δὲ (and) τούτου (of this one) ἐπικαλεσαμένου (having appealed to) τὸν (the) Σεβαστὸν (Emperor), ἔκρινα (I determined) πέμπειν (to send him),

¹⁹ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγουσα (saying), “Μηδὲν (Let there be nothing) σοὶ (between you) καὶ (and) τῷ (the) δικαίῳ (righteous man) ἐκείνῳ (that); πολλὰ (many things) γὰρ (for) ἔπαθον (I suffered) σήμερον (today) κατ’ (in) ὄναρ (a dream) δι’ (because of) αὐτόν (Him).”

¹² Γαλλίωνος (Gallio) δὲ (however) ἀνθυπάτου (proconsul) ὄντος (being) τῆς (of) Ἀχαΐας (Achaia), κατεπέστησαν (rose up against) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul), καὶ (and) ἤγαγον (led) αὐτὸν (him) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (the) βῆμα (judgment seat), ¹³ λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Παρὰ (Contrary to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ἀναπείθει (persuades) οὗτος (this man) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men) σέβεσθαι (to worship) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).” ¹⁴ Μέλλοντος (Being about) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ἀνοίγειν (to open) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Γαλλίων (Gallio) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), “Εἰ (If) μὲν (indeed) ἦν (it was) ἀδίκημά (unrighteousness) τι (some) ἢ (or) ῥᾳδιούργημα (crime) πονηρόν (wicked), ὦ (O) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), κατὰ (according to) λόγον (reason) ἂν (-) ἀνεσχόμην (I would have endured with) ὑμῶν (you); ¹⁵ εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ζητήματά (a question) ἐστιν (it is) περὶ (about) λόγου (a word), καὶ (and) ὀνομάτων (names), καὶ (and) νόμου (law) τοῦ (-) καθ’ (in reference to) ὑμᾶς (your), ὄψεσθε (you will see) αὐτοί (to it yourselves); κριτὴς (a judge) ἐγὼ (I) τούτων (of these things) οὐ (not) βούλομαι (resolve) εἶναι (to be).” ¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἀπήλασεν (he drove) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat). ¹⁷ Ἐπιλαβόμενοι (Having seized) δὲ (then) πάντες (all of them) Σωσθένην (Sosthenes), τὸν (the) ἀρχισυνάγωγον (ruler of the synagogue), ἔτυπτον (they began to beat him) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat). καὶ (And) οὐδὲν (nothing) τούτων (about these things) τῷ (-) Γαλλίωνι (to Gallio) ἔμελεν (it mattered).

¹⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Ἑστὼς (Standing) «ἐπὶ (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) Καίσαρος» (of Caesar) εἰμι (I am), οὗ (where) με (me) δεῖ (it behooves) κρίνεσθαι (to be judged). Ἰουδαίους (To the Jews) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἠδίκησα* (I have done wrong), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) κάλλιον (very well) ἐπιγινώσκεις (know).

¹⁷ Συνελθόντων (Having come together) οὖν (therefore) [αὐτῶν] (of them) ἐνθάδε (here), ἀναβολὴν (delay) μηδεμίαν (no) ποιησάμενος (having made), τῇ (the) ἑξῆς (next day) καθίσας (having sat) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἐκέλευσα (I commanded) ἀχθῆναι (to be brought) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man),

¹⁰ τοὺς (-) γὰρ (For) πάντας (all) ἡμᾶς (of us) φανερωθῆναι (to be revealed) δεῖ (it behooves) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (that) κομίσηται (may receive back) ἕκαστος (each) τὰ (the things done) διὰ (in) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), πρὸς (according to) ἃ (what) ἔπραξεν (he did), εἴτε (whether) ἀγαθὸν (good) εἴτε (or) φαῦλον (evil).

⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) ἠτιμάσατε (have dishonored) τὸν (the) πτωχόν (poor). οὐχ (Not) οἱ (the) πλούσιοι (rich) καταδυναστεύουσιν (are oppressing) ὑμῶν (you) καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἕλκουσιν (dragging) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) κριτήρια (court)?

¹¹ Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) ὀνειδίσωσιν (they shall insult) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) διώξωσιν (shall persecute you), καὶ (and) εἴπωσιν (shall say) πᾶν (all kinds of) πονηρὸν (evil) καθ’ (against) ὑμῶν (you), ψευδόμενοι (lying) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me). ¹² χαίρετε (Rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (exult), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολὺς (is great) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) τοὺς (-) πρὸ (before) ὑμῶν (you).

⁶⁰ καὶ (but) οὐχ (not any) εὗρον (they found), πολλῶν (of many) προσελθόντων (having come forward as) ψευδομαρτύρων (false witnesses). Ὕστερον (At last) δὲ (then), προσελθόντες (having come forward) δύο (two), ⁶¹ εἶπαν (they said), “Οὗτος (This man) ἔφη (has been saying), ‘Δύναμαι (I am able) καταλῦσαι (to destroy) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) διὰ (in) τριῶν (three) ἡμερῶν (days) οἰκοδομῆσαι (to rebuild it).’” ⁶² Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having stood up), ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐδὲν (Nothing) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer you)? τί (What) οὗτοί (these) σου (you) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (do witness against)?”

³ Καὶ (And) κατηγόρουν (were accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) πολλά (of many things). ⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) πάλιν (again) ἐπηρώτα (began to question) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer You) οὐδέν (nothing)? ἴδε (See) πόσα (how many things) σου (You) κατηγοροῦσιν (they testify against)!”

² ἤρξαντο (They began) δὲ (then) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Τοῦτον (This man) εὕραμεν (we found) διαστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) κωλύοντα (forbidding) φόρους (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) διδόναι (to be given), καὶ (and) λέγοντα (declaring) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) Χριστὸν (Christ), βασιλέα (a king), εἶναι (to be).”

¹⁰ Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing by) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), εὐτόνως (vehemently) κατηγοροῦντες (accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him).

²⁸ κράζοντες (crying out), “Ἄνδρες (Men), Ἰσραηλῖται (Israelites), βοηθεῖτε (help)! οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) ὁ (who) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τούτου (this) πάντας (all those) πανταχῇ (everywhere) διδάσκων (teaching); ἔτι (besides) τε (and) καὶ (also) Ἕλληνας (Greeks) εἰσήγαγεν (he has brought) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) καὶ (and) κεκοίνωκεν (defiled) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) τόπον (place) τοῦτον (this).”

⁵ Εὑρόντες (Having found) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man) τοῦτον (this) λοιμὸν (a pest), καὶ (and) κινοῦντα (stirring) στάσεις (insurrection) πᾶσιν (among all) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τοῖς (-) κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world), πρωτοστάτην (a leader) τε (then) τῆς (of the) τῶν (of the) Ναζωραίων (Nazarenes) αἱρέσεως (sect), ⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (even) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) ἐπείρασεν (attempted) βεβηλῶσαι (to profane), ὃν (whom) καὶ (also) ἐκρατήσαμεν (we seized).

¹³ οὐδὲ (Nor) παραστῆσαι (to prove) δύνανταί (are they able) σοι (to you), περὶ (concerning) ὧν (the things of which) νυνὶ (now) κατηγοροῦσίν (they accuse) μου (me).

²⁴ Καί (And) φησιν (says) ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus), “Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa) βασιλεῦ (King), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) συμπαρόντες (being present with) ἡμῖν (us) ἄνδρες (men), θεωρεῖτε (you see) τοῦτον (this one), περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐνέτυχόν (pleaded) μοι (with me), ἔν (in) τε (both) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἐνθάδε (here), βοῶντες (crying out that) μὴ (not) δεῖν (he ought) αὐτὸν (of him) ζῆν (to live) μηκέτι (no longer).

¹⁴ Εἰ (If) ὀνειδίζεσθε (you are insulted) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μακάριοι (you are blessed), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀναπαύεται (rests). ¹⁵ μὴ (Not) γάρ (for) τις (any) ὑμῶν (of you) πασχέτω (let suffer) ὡς (as) φονεὺς (a murderer), ἢ (or) κλέπτης (a thief), ἢ (or) κακοποιὸς (an evildoer), ἢ (or) ὡς (as) ἀλλοτριεπίσκοπος (a troublesome meddler); ¹⁶ εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) Χριστιανός (a Christian), μὴ (not) αἰσχυνέσθω (let him be ashamed); δοξαζέτω (let him glorify) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this).

¹³ Ἔστησάν (They set) τε (also) μάρτυρας (witnesses) ψευδεῖς (false), λέγοντας (saying), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), οὐ (not) παύεται (does stop) λαλῶν (speaking) ῥήματα (words) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τοῦ (-) ἁγίου (holy) [τούτου] (this) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law); ¹⁴ ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῦ (him) λέγοντος (saying) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὁ (of) Ναζωραῖος (Nazareth) οὗτος (this) καταλύσει (will destroy) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τοῦτον (this) καὶ (and) ἀλλάξει (will change) τὰ (the) ἔθη (customs) ἃ (that) παρέδωκεν (delivered) ἡμῖν (to us) Μωϋσῆς (Moses).”

¹ Ἀτενίσας (Having looked intently) δὲ (then) ‹ὁ› (-) Παῦλος (Paul) τῷ (at the) συνεδρίῳ (Council), εἶπεν (he said), “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐγὼ (I) πάσῃ (in all) συνειδήσει (conscience) ἀγαθῇ (good) πεπολίτευμαι (have lived as a citizen) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἄχρι (unto) ταύτης (this) τῆς (-) ἡμέρας (day).”

⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (even) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) ἐπείρασεν (attempted) βεβηλῶσαι (to profane), ὃν (whom) καὶ (also) ἐκρατήσαμεν (we seized).

¹² καὶ (And) οὔτε (neither) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) εὗρόν (did they find) με (me) πρός (with) τινα (anyone) διαλεγόμενον (reasoning), ἢ (or) ἐπίστασιν (a tumultuous gathering) ποιοῦντα (making) ὄχλου (of a crowd), οὔτε (nor) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), οὔτε (nor) κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city).

¹⁷ Δι’ (After) ἐτῶν (years) δὲ (now) πλειόνων (many), ἐλεημοσύνας (alms) ποιήσων (to bring) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) μου (of me), παρεγενόμην (I arrived), καὶ (and) προσφοράς (offerings), ¹⁸ ἐν (during) αἷς (which) εὗρόν (they found) με (me) ἡγνισμένον (purified) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), οὐ (not) μετὰ (with) ὄχλου (a crowd), οὐδὲ (nor) μετὰ (in) θορύβου (tumult). τινὲς (Some) δὲ (however are) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Ἀσίας (Asia), Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ¹⁹ οὓς (who) ἔδει (ought) ἐπὶ (before) σοῦ (you) παρεῖναι (to appear) καὶ (and) κατηγορεῖν (to make accusation), εἴ (if) τι (anything) ἔχοιεν (they may have) πρὸς (against) ἐμέ (me). ²⁰ ἢ (Otherwise) αὐτοὶ (themselves) οὗτοι (it) εἰπάτωσαν (let them say) τί (any) εὗρον (they found) ἀδίκημα (unrighteousness), στάντος (having stood) μου (in me) ἐπὶ (before) τοῦ (the) συνεδρίου (Council), ²¹ ἢ (other than) περὶ (concerning) μιᾶς (one) ταύτης (this) φωνῆς (voice) ἧς (which) ἐκέκραξα (I cried out) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them) ἑστὼς (standing) ὅτι (-): ‘Περὶ (Concerning) ἀναστάσεως (the resurrection) νεκρῶν (of the dead) ἐγὼ (I) κρίνομαι (am judged) σήμερον (this day) ἐφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you).’”

¹⁷ Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then), μετὰ (after) ἡμέρας (days) τρεῖς (three) συνκαλέσασθαι (called together) αὐτὸν (he) τοὺς (those) ὄντας (being) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) πρώτους (leaders). συνελθόντων (Having come together) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (of them), ἔλεγεν (he was saying) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἐγώ (I), ἄνδρες (men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐναντίον (against) ποιήσας (having done) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people) ἢ (or) τοῖς (the) ἔθεσι (customs) τοῖς (-) πατρῴοις (of our fathers), δέσμιος (a prisoner) ἐξ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) παρεδόθην (was delivered) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) τῶν (of the) Ῥωμαίων (Romans),

¹⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), βουλόμενος (desiring) τῷ (to the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) τὸ (that which was) ἱκανὸν (satisfactory) ποιῆσαι (to do), ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas), καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), φραγελλώσας (having flogged him), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified).

³ ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ἀρεστόν (pleasing) ἐστιν (it is) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), προσέθετο (he proceeded) συλλαβεῖν (to take) καὶ (also) Πέτρον (Peter) — ἦσαν (these were) δὲ (now) [αἱ] (the) ἡμέραι (days) τῶν (of the) ἀζύμων (Unleavened Bread) —

²⁷ Διετίας (Two years) δὲ (however) πληρωθείσης (having been completed), ἔλαβεν (received as) διάδοχον (successor) ὁ (-) Φῆλιξ (Felix), Πόρκιον (Porcius) Φῆστον (Festus); θέλων (wishing) τε (then) χάριτα (favor) καταθέσθαι (to acquire for himself) τοῖς (with the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ὁ (-) Φῆλιξ (Felix) κατέλιπε (left) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) δεδεμένον (imprisoned).

³ αἰτούμενοι (asking) χάριν (a favor) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (him), ὅπως (that) μεταπέμψηται (he would summon) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἐνέδραν (an ambush) ποιοῦντες (forming) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) αὐτὸν (him) κατὰ (on) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way).

²⁰ Ἀπορούμενος (Being perplexed) δὲ (now), ἐγὼ (I) τὴν (-) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (this) ζήτησιν (inquiry) ἔλεγον (was asking) εἰ (if) βούλοιτο (he was willing) πορεύεσθαι (to go) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) κἀκεῖ (and there) κρίνεσθαι (to be judged) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things).

¹⁸ ᾔδει (He knew) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) διὰ (through) φθόνον (envy) παρέδωκαν (they delivered up) αὐτόν (him).

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he said), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did He commit)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) περισσῶς (all the more) ἔκραζον (they kept crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).” ²⁴ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (nothing) ὠφελεῖ (it availed), ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) θόρυβος (a riot) γίνεται (is arising), λαβὼν (having taken) ὕδωρ (water), ἀπενίψατο (he washed) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἀπέναντι* (before) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd), λέγων (saying), “Ἀθῷός (Guiltless) εἰμι (I am) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τούτου (of this). ὑμεῖς (For yourselves) ὄψεσθε (you will see).”

³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Παῦλος (Paul) ἔφη (was saying) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Δείραντες (Having beaten) ἡμᾶς (us) δημοσίᾳ (publicly), ἀκατακρίτους (uncondemned) ἀνθρώπους (men), Ῥωμαίους (Romans) ὑπάρχοντας (being), ἔβαλαν (they cast us) εἰς (into) φυλακήν (prison), καὶ (and) νῦν (now) λάθρᾳ (secretly) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκβάλλουσιν (do they throw out)? οὐ (No) γάρ (indeed)! ἀλλὰ (Instead), ἐλθόντες (having come) αὐτοὶ (themselves), ἡμᾶς (us) ἐξαγαγέτωσαν (let them bring out).” ³⁸ Ἀπήγγειλαν (Reported) δὲ (then) τοῖς (to the) στρατηγοῖς (captains) οἱ (the) ῥαβδοῦχοι (officers) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) ταῦτα (these). ἐφοβήθησαν (They were afraid) δὲ (then), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ὅτι (that) Ῥωμαῖοί (Romans) εἰσιν (they are).

²⁵ Ὡς (As) δὲ (however) προέτειναν (he stretched forward) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (with the) ἱμᾶσιν (straps), εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ἑστῶτα (standing by) ἑκατόνταρχον (centurion) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Εἰ (If) ἄνθρωπον (a man), Ῥωμαῖον (a Roman) καὶ (and) ἀκατάκριτον (uncondemned), ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) ὑμῖν (to you) μαστίζειν (to flog)?” ²⁶ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) ἑκατοντάρχης (centurion), προσελθὼν (having gone) τῷ (to the) χιλιάρχῳ (commander), ἀπήγγειλεν (he reported it), λέγων (saying), “Τί (What) μέλλεις (are you going) ποιεῖν (to do)? ὁ (The) γὰρ (for) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this) Ῥωμαῖός (a Roman) ἐστιν (is).” ²⁷ Προσελθὼν (Having come near) δὲ (then), ὁ (the) χιλίαρχος (commander) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Λέγε (Tell) μοι (me), σὺ (you) Ῥωμαῖος (a Roman) εἶ (are)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he was saying), “Ναί (Yes).” ²⁸ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) χιλίαρχος (commander), “Ἐγὼ (I) πολλοῦ (with a great) κεφαλαίου (sum) τὴν (the) πολιτείαν (citizenship) ταύτην (this) ἐκτησάμην (bought).” ὁ (-) Δὲ (But) Παῦλος (Paul) ἔφη (was saying), “Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) καὶ (even) γεγέννημαι (was born so).”

²⁹ ὃν (whom) εὗρον (I found) ἐγκαλούμενον (being accused) περὶ (concerning) ζητημάτων (questions) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) αὐτῶν (of them), μηδὲν (no) δὲ (however) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) ἢ (or) δεσμῶν (of chains) ἔχοντα (having) ἔγκλημα (accusation).

⁶ Διατρίψας (Having spent) δὲ (then) ἐν (with) αὐτοῖς (them) ἡμέρας (days) οὐ (not) πλείους (more than) ὀκτὼ (eight) ἢ (or) δέκα (ten), καταβὰς (having gone down) εἰς (to) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea), τῇ (on the) ἐπαύριον (next day) καθίσας (having sat) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) ἀχθῆναι (to be brought).

³¹ καὶ (and) ἀναχωρήσαντες (having withdrawn), ἐλάλουν (they began speaking) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Οὐδὲν (Nothing) θανάτου (of death) ἢ (or) δεσμῶν (of chains) ἄξιον (worthy) ‹τι› (any) πράσσει (is doing) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this).”

¹⁸ οἵτινες (who) ἀνακρίναντές (having examined) με (me), ἐβούλοντο (were wanting) ἀπολῦσαι (to let me go), διὰ (on account of) τὸ (-) μηδεμίαν (not one) αἰτίαν (cause) θανάτου (of death) ὑπάρχειν (existing) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (me).

² ἀλλὰ (But) ἀπειπάμεθα (we have renounced) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τῆς (-) αἰσχύνης (of shame), μὴ (not) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) μηδὲ (nor) δολοῦντες (falsifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) φανερώσει (by manifestation) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) συνιστάνοντες (commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πρὸς (to) πᾶσαν (every) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

²¹ τοῦ (-) δὲ (But) Παύλου (of Paul) ἐπικαλεσαμένου (having appealed for) τηρηθῆναι (to be kept) αὐτὸν (himself) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) τοῦ (-) Σεβαστοῦ (Emperor's) διάγνωσιν (decision), ἐκέλευσα (I commanded) τηρεῖσθαι (to be kept) αὐτὸν (him) ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀναπέμψω (I might send) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) Καίσαρα (Caesar).”

³² Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) δὲ (then) τῷ (to) Φήστῳ (Festus) ἔφη (was saying), “Ἀπολελύσθαι (Have been released) ἐδύνατο (could) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐπεκέκλητο (he had appealed) Καίσαρα (to Caesar).”

¹⁹ ἀντιλεγόντων (Objecting) δὲ (however) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ἠναγκάσθην (I was compelled) ἐπικαλέσασθαι (to appeal to) Καίσαρα (Caesar), οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) τοῦ (the) ἔθνους (nation) μου (of me) ἔχων (having) τι (anything) κατηγορεῖν (to lay against).

¹¹ Τῇ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπιούσῃ (the following) νυκτὶ (night), ἐπιστὰς (having stood by) αὐτῷ (him), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) εἶπεν (said), “Θάρσει (Take courage), ὡς (as) γὰρ (for) διεμαρτύρω (you have fully testified) τὰ (-) περὶ (about) ἐμοῦ (Me) εἰς (at) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), οὕτω (so) σε (you) δεῖ (it behooves) καὶ (also) εἰς (in) Ῥώμην (Rome) μαρτυρῆσαι (to testify).”

³² Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) δὲ (then) τῷ (to) Φήστῳ (Festus) ἔφη (was saying), “Ἀπολελύσθαι (Have been released) ἐδύνατο (could) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐπεκέκλητο (he had appealed) Καίσαρα (to Caesar).”

¹⁶ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (now) εἰσήλθομεν (we came) εἰς (to) Ῥώμην (Rome), ἐπετράπη (was allowed) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul) μένειν (to stay) καθ’ (by) ἑαυτὸν (himself), σὺν (with) τῷ (the) φυλάσσοντι (guarding) αὐτὸν (him) στρατιώτῃ (soldier).

²⁸ Τοῦτο (This) οὖν (therefore) ἐπιτελέσας (having finished) καὶ (and) σφραγισάμενος (having sealed) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) τοῦτον (this), ἀπελεύσομαι (I will set off) δι’ (through) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (into) Σπανίαν (Spain). ²⁹ οἶδα (I know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ἐρχόμενος (coming) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐν (in) πληρώματι (the fullness) εὐλογίας (of the blessing) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐλεύσομαι (I will come).

¹² Γινώσκειν (To know) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you), βούλομαι (I want), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) τὰ (the things) κατ’ (concerning) ἐμὲ (me), μᾶλλον (really) εἰς (to) προκοπὴν (the advancement) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) ἐλήλυθεν (have turned out), ¹³ ὥστε (so as for) τοὺς (the) δεσμούς (chains) μου (of me) φανεροὺς (clearly known) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) γενέσθαι (to have become) ἐν (in) ὅλῳ (all) τῷ (the) πραιτωρίῳ (palace guard), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) λοιποῖς (rest) πᾶσιν (all); ¹⁴ καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) πλείονας (most) τῶν (of the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) πεποιθότας (trusting) τοῖς (by the) δεσμοῖς (chains) μου (of me), περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) τολμᾶν (to dare) ἀφόβως (fearlessly) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) λαλεῖν (to speak).

²⁰ κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἀποκαραδοκίαν (earnest expectation) καὶ (and) ἐλπίδα (hope) μου (of me) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) οὐδενὶ (nothing) αἰσχυνθήσομαι (I will be ashamed), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) παρρησίᾳ (boldness), ὡς (as) πάντοτε (always) καὶ (also) νῦν (now), μεγαλυνθήσεται (will be magnified) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματί (body) μου (of me), εἴτε (whether) διὰ (by) ζωῆς (life) εἴτε (or) διὰ (by) θανάτου (death).

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (they began) ἀσπάζεσθαι (to salute) αὐτόν (Him), “Χαῖρε (Hail), Βασιλεῦ (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!”

²² Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) δὲ (then) πρὸς (said to) τὸν (-) Φῆστον (Festus), “Ἐβουλόμην (I have been wanting) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (myself) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear).” “Αὔριον (Tomorrow),” φησίν (he says), “Ἀκούσῃ (you will hear) αὐτοῦ (him).” ²³ Τῇ (On the) οὖν (therefore) ἐπαύριον (next day), ἐλθόντος (having come) τοῦ (-) Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa) καὶ (and) τῆς (-) Βερνίκης (Bernice) μετὰ (with) πολλῆς (great) φαντασίας (pomp), καὶ (and) εἰσελθόντων (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἀκροατήριον (audience hall), σύν (with) τε (both) χιλιάρχοις (the commanders) καὶ (and) ἀνδράσιν (men) τοῖς (-) κατ’ (in) ἐξοχὴν (prominence) τῆς (in the) πόλεως (city), καὶ (and) κελεύσαντος (having commanded) τοῦ (-) Φήστου (Festus), ἤχθη (was brought in) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul).

¹ Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) ἔφη (was saying), “Ἐπιτρέπεταί (It is permitted) σοι (you) ὑπὲρ (for) σεαυτοῦ (yourself) λέγειν (to speak).” Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ἀπελογεῖτο (began his defense):

²⁷ πιστεύεις (Believe you), βασιλεῦ (King) Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa), τοῖς (the) προφήταις (prophets)? οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) πιστεύεις (you believe).” ²⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (Then) Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) πρὸς (said to) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul), “Ἐν (Within) ὀλίγῳ (so little) με (me) πείθεις (do you persuade) Χριστιανὸν (a Christian) ποιῆσαι (to become)?”

³ χήρα (A widow) δὲ (then) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) ἤρχετο (she was coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him), λέγουσα (saying), ‘Ἐκδίκησόν (Avenge) με (me) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) ἀντιδίκου (adversary) μου (of me).’ ⁴ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he would) ἐπὶ (for) χρόνον (a time); μετὰ (afterward) ταῦτα (he) δὲ (however) εἶπεν (said) ἐν (within) ἑαυτῷ (himself), ‘Εἰ (If) καὶ (even) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) οὐ (not) φοβοῦμαι (I fear), οὐδὲ (nor) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐντρέπομαι (respect), ⁵ διά (because) γε (yet) τὸ (-) παρέχειν (causes) μοι (me) κόπον (trouble) τὴν (the) χήραν (widow) ταύτην (this), ἐκδικήσω (I will avenge) αὐτήν (her), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τέλος (end) ἐρχομένη (coming), ὑπωπιάζῃ (she exhaust) με (me).’”

²³ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπέκειντο (they were urgent), φωναῖς (with voices) μεγάλαις (loud), αἰτούμενοι (asking for) αὐτὸν (Him) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified). καὶ (And) κατίσχυον (were prevailing) αἱ (the) φωναὶ (voices) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹ Φῆστος (Festus) οὖν (therefore) ἐπιβὰς (having arrived in) τῇ (the) ἐπαρχείᾳ* (province), μετὰ (after) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) ἀνέβη (he went up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἀπὸ (from) Καισαρείας (Caesarea). ² ἐνεφάνισάν (Made a presentation before) τε (then) αὐτῷ (him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (chiefs) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul), καὶ (and) παρεκάλουν (they were begging) αὐτὸν (him), ³ αἰτούμενοι (asking) χάριν (a favor) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (him), ὅπως (that) μεταπέμψηται (he would summon) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἐνέδραν (an ambush) ποιοῦντες (forming) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) αὐτὸν (him) κατὰ (on) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way).

⁵¹ “Μὴ (Not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἡμῶν (of us) κρίνει (does judge) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (it has heard) πρῶτον (first) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) καὶ (and) γνῷ (known) τί (what) ποιεῖ (he does)?”

⁴ Ὁ (-) μὲν (Indeed) οὖν (therefore) Φῆστος (Festus) ἀπεκρίθη (answered that) τηρεῖσθαι (is to be kept) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) εἰς (in) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea); ἑαυτὸν (he himself) δὲ (now) μέλλειν (is about) ἐν (in) τάχει (quickness) ἐκπορεύεσθαι (to set out). ⁵ “Οἱ (Those) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you),” φησίν (he says), “Δυνατοὶ (those in power), συνκαταβάντες (having gone down too), εἴ (if) τί (anything) ἐστιν (there is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνδρὶ (man) ἄτοπον (wrong), κατηγορείτωσαν (let them accuse) αὐτοῦ (him).”

²² ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) βαπτίσματος (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John) ἕως (until) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἧς (in which) ἀνελήμφθη (He was taken up) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us), μάρτυρα (a witness) τῆς (of the) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σὺν (with) ἡμῖν (us) γενέσθαι (to become) ἕνα (one) τούτων (of these).”

³² Τοῦτον (This) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀνέστησεν (has raised up) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), οὗ (whereof) πάντες (all) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) μάρτυρες (witnesses).

²² Σταθεὶς (Having stood) δὲ (then) [ὁ] (-) Παῦλος (Paul) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρείου (Ares) Πάγου (Hill), ἔφη (he was saying), “Ἄνδρες (Men), Ἀθηναῖοι (Athenians), κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) ὡς (as) δεισιδαιμονεστέρους (very religious) ὑμᾶς (you) θεωρῶ (I behold). ²³ διερχόμενος (Passing through) γὰρ (for) καὶ (and) ἀναθεωρῶν (beholding) τὰ (the) σεβάσματα (objects of worship) ὑμῶν (of you), εὗρον (I found) καὶ (even) βωμὸν (an altar) ἐν (on) ᾧ (which) ἐπεγέγραπτο (had been inscribed): ΑΓΝΩΣΤΩ (To an unknown) ΘΕΩ (God). Ὃ (Whom) οὖν (therefore) ἀγνοοῦντες (not knowing) εὐσεβεῖτε (you worship), τοῦτο (Him) ἐγὼ (I) καταγγέλλω (proclaim) ὑμῖν (to you).

³¹ καθότι (because) ἔστησεν (He set) ἡμέραν (a day) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) μέλλει (He is about) κρίνειν (to judge) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness), ἐν (by) ἀνδρὶ (a man) ᾧ (whom) ὥρισεν (He appointed), πίστιν (a guarantee) παρασχὼν (having provided) πᾶσιν (to all), ἀναστήσας (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).”

¹⁵ εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ζητήματά (a question) ἐστιν (it is) περὶ (about) λόγου (a word), καὶ (and) ὀνομάτων (names), καὶ (and) νόμου (law) τοῦ (-) καθ’ (in reference to) ὑμᾶς (your), ὄψεσθε (you will see) αὐτοί (to it yourselves); κριτὴς (a judge) ἐγὼ (I) τούτων (of these things) οὐ (not) βούλομαι (resolve) εἶναι (to be).”

¹⁹ Κατήντησαν (They came) δὲ (now) εἰς (to) Ἔφεσον (Ephesus), κἀκείνους (and them) κατέλιπεν (left) αὐτοῦ (there). αὐτὸς (He himself) δὲ (then) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγὴν (synagogue), διελέξατο (he reasoned) τοῖς (with the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews).

⁷ παραγενομένου (Having arrived) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he), περιέστησαν (stood around) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) καταβεβηκότες (having come down) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), πολλὰ (many) καὶ (and) βαρέα (weighty) αἰτιώματα (charges) καταφέροντες (bringing), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυον (they were able) ἀποδεῖξαι (to prove).

²² Ἐπικουρίας (Help) οὖν (therefore) τυχὼν (having obtained) τῆς (-) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἄχρι (unto) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ταύτης (this), ἕστηκα (I have stood), μαρτυρόμενος (bearing witness) μικρῷ (to small) τε (both) καὶ (and) μεγάλῳ (to great), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐκτὸς (other) λέγων (saying) ὧν (than what) τε (both) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets) ἐλάλησαν (said) μελλόντων (was about) γίνεσθαι (to happen), καὶ (and) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), ²³ εἰ (that) παθητὸς (would suffer) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ); εἰ (as) πρῶτος (first) ἐξ (through) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) νεκρῶν (from the dead), φῶς (light) μέλλει (He is about) καταγγέλλειν (to preach) τῷ (to) τε (both) λαῷ (our people) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles).”

³ Παρέδωκα (I delivered) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐν (in) πρώτοις (the foremost) ὃ (what) καὶ (also) παρέλαβον (I received), ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures), ⁴ καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἐτάφη (He was buried), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἐγήγερται (He was raised) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures),

¹⁴ εἰ (if) δὲ (then) Χριστὸς (Christ) οὐκ (not) ἐγήγερται (has been raised), κενὸν (is void) ἄρα (then) [καὶ] (also) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) ἡμῶν (of us), κενὴ (void) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you). ¹⁵ εὑρισκόμεθα (We are found) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ψευδομάρτυρες (false witnesses) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὅτι (because) ἐμαρτυρήσαμεν (we have witnessed) κατὰ (concerning) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ὅτι (that) ἤγειρεν (He raised up) τὸν (-) Χριστόν (Christ), ὃν (whom) οὐκ (not) ἤγειρεν (He has raised) εἴπερ (if) ἄρα (then) νεκροὶ (the dead) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρονται (are raised). ¹⁶ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) νεκροὶ (the dead) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρονται (are raised), οὐδὲ (neither) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐγήγερται (has been raised); ¹⁷ εἰ (if) δὲ (then) Χριστὸς (Christ) οὐκ (not) ἐγήγερται (has been raised), ματαία (futile) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) (ἐστίν) (is); ἔτι (still) ἐστὲ (you are) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you). ¹⁸ ἄρα (Then) καὶ (also) οἱ (those) κοιμηθέντες (having fallen asleep) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀπώλοντο (have perished). ¹⁹ εἰ (If) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (life) ταύτῃ (this), ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἠλπικότες (having hope) ἐσμὲν (we are), μόνον (only), ἐλεεινότεροι (more to be pitied) πάντων (than all) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἐσμέν (we are). ²⁰ Νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐγήγερται (has been raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ἀπαρχὴ (firstfruit) τῶν (of those) κεκοιμημένων (having fallen asleep).

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Ζῶν (Living One); καὶ (and) ἐγενόμην (I was) νεκρὸς (dead), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold) ζῶν (living) εἰμι (I am) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), καὶ (and) ἔχω (I have) τὰς (the) κλεῖς (keys) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (Death) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of) ᾅδου (Hades).

⁹ Ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus) δὲ (however), θέλων (wishing) τοῖς (on the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) χάριν (a favor) καταθέσθαι (to lay), ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul), εἶπεν (said), “Θέλεις (Are you willing) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἀναβὰς (having gone up), ἐκεῖ (there) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things) κριθῆναι (to be judged) ἐπ’ (before) ἐμοῦ (me)?”

¹ Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those), ἐξῆλθεν (went out) δόγμα (a decree) παρὰ (from) Καίσαρος (Caesar) Αὐγούστου (Augustus) ἀπογράφεσθαι (to register) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world).

¹⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Ἑστὼς (Standing) «ἐπὶ (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) Καίσαρος» (of Caesar) εἰμι (I am), οὗ (where) με (me) δεῖ (it behooves) κρίνεσθαι (to be judged). Ἰουδαίους (To the Jews) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἠδίκησα* (I have done wrong), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) κάλλιον (very well) ἐπιγινώσκεις (know). ¹¹ εἰ (If) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἀδικῶ (I do wrong), καὶ (and) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) πέπραχά (have done) τι (anything), οὐ (not) παραιτοῦμαι (I do refuse) τὸ (-) ἀποθανεῖν (to die). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (there is) ὧν (of which) οὗτοι (they) κατηγοροῦσίν (can accuse) μου (me), οὐδείς (no one) με (me) δύναται (can) αὐτοῖς (to them) χαρίσασθαι (give up). Καίσαρα (To Caesar) ἐπικαλοῦμαι (I appeal)!”

¹⁶ Ἐν (In) τῇ (-) πρώτῃ (first) μου (of me) ἀπολογίᾳ (defense), οὐδείς (no one) μοι (me) παρεγένετο (has stood with), ἀλλὰ (but) πάντες (all) με (me) ἐγκατέλιπον (deserted). μὴ (Not) αὐτοῖς (to them) λογισθείη (may it be charged)!

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (before) ἡγεμόνας (governors) δὲ (also), καὶ (and) βασιλεῖς (kings) ἀχθήσεσθε (you will be brought), ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles).

¹⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (however) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Πορεύου (Go), ὅτι (for) σκεῦος (a vessel) ἐκλογῆς (of choice) ἐστίν (is) μοι (to Me) οὗτος (this man), τοῦ (-) βαστάσαι (to carry) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me) ἐνώπιον (before) (τῶν) (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles), τε (and) καὶ (also) βασιλέων (kings), υἱῶν (the sons) τε (then) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel);

²¹ τακτῇ (On the appointed) δὲ (now) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἐνδυσάμενος (having put on) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) βασιλικὴν (royal) ‹καὶ› (and) καθίσας (having sat) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (throne), ἐδημηγόρει (was making an address) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them).

¹³ Ἡμερῶν (Days) δὲ (now) διαγενομένων (having passed) τινῶν (some), Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) καὶ (and) Βερνίκη (Bernice) κατήντησαν (came down) εἰς (to) Καισάρειαν (Caesarea), ἀσπασάμενοι (greeting) τὸν (-) Φῆστον (Festus).

³⁰ Ἀνέστη (Rose up) τε (then) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἡγεμὼν (governor) ἥ (-) τε (and) Βερνίκη (Bernice) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) συνκαθήμενοι (sitting with) αὐτοῖς (them),

³¹ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χρώμενοι (using) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) καταχρώμενοι (using it as their own). παράγει (Is passing away) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σχῆμα (present form) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this).

¹¹ ἀνέτειλεν (Has risen) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) σὺν (with) τῷ (its) καύσωνι (burning heat) καὶ (and) ἐξήρανεν (withered) τὸν (the) χόρτον (grass), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἄνθος (flower) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἐξέπεσεν (has fallen), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) εὐπρέπεια (beauty) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (appearance) αὐτοῦ (of it) ἀπώλετο (has perished). οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) πλούσιος (rich man) ἐν (in the midst of) ταῖς (the) πορείαις (pursuits) αὐτοῦ (of him) μαρανθήσεται (will fade away).

²⁴ διότι (because), “Πᾶσα (All) σὰρξ (flesh is) ὡς (like) χόρτος (grass), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) δόξα (the glory) αὐτῆς (of it) ὡς (like) ἄνθος (the flower) χόρτου (of grass). ἐξηράνθη (Withers) ὁ (the) χόρτος (grass), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἄνθος (flower) ἐξέπεσεν (falls away),

¹⁶ ὅτι (because) πᾶν (all) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῶν (of the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλαζονεία* (vaunting) τοῦ (of) βίου (life), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρός (Father), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστίν (is).

²¹ οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπεφώνουν (they were crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρου (Crucify), σταύρου (crucify) αὐτόν (Him).” ²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) τρίτον (a third time) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did commit) οὗτος (this man)? οὐδὲν (No) αἴτιον (cause) θανάτου (of death) εὗρον (found I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him). παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).” ²³ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπέκειντο (they were urgent), φωναῖς (with voices) μεγάλαις (loud), αἰτούμενοι (asking for) αὐτὸν (Him) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified). καὶ (And) κατίσχυον (were prevailing) αἱ (the) φωναὶ (voices) αὐτῶν (of them).

²² Ἤκουον (They were listening) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (to him) ἄχρι (until) τούτου (this) τοῦ (-) λόγου (word), καὶ (and) ἐπῆραν (they lifted up) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγοντες (saying), “Αἶρε (Away with) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), τὸν (the) τοιοῦτον (such). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) καθῆκεν (it is fit) αὐτὸν (he) ζῆν (to live)!”

⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), “Οὐδὲν (Not) εὑρίσκω (find I) αἴτιον (guilt) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this).”

¹⁴ εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Προσηνέγκατέ (You brought) μοι (to me) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) τοῦτον (this), ὡς (as) ἀποστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸν (the) λαόν (people); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἐνώπιον (before) ὑμῶν (you) ἀνακρίνας (having examined Him), οὐθὲν (nothing) εὗρον (found) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this) αἴτιον (guilty) ὧν (of that) κατηγορεῖτε (accusation you are bringing) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him).

³⁸ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) ἀλήθεια (truth)?” Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) εἰπὼν (having said), πάλιν (again) ἐξῆλθεν (he went out) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) οὐδεμίαν (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt).

⁹ Ἐγένετο (Arose) δὲ (then) κραυγὴ (a clamor) μεγάλη (great), καὶ (and) ἀναστάντες (having risen up) τινὲς (some) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) τοῦ (of the) μέρους (party) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), διεμάχοντο (they were contending), λέγοντες (saying), “Οὐδὲν (Nothing) κακὸν (evil) εὑρίσκομεν (we find) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this). εἰ (What if) δὲ (now) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἐλάλησεν (has spoken) αὐτῷ (to him), ἢ (or) ἄγγελος (an angel)?”

¹¹ εἰ (If) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἀδικῶ (I do wrong), καὶ (and) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) πέπραχά (have done) τι (anything), οὐ (not) παραιτοῦμαι (I do refuse) τὸ (-) ἀποθανεῖν (to die). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (there is) ὧν (of which) οὗτοι (they) κατηγοροῦσίν (can accuse) μου (me), οὐδείς (no one) με (me) δύναται (can) αὐτοῖς (to them) χαρίσασθαι (give up). Καίσαρα (To Caesar) ἐπικαλοῦμαι (I appeal)!” ¹² Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus), συλλαλήσας* (having conferred) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) συμβουλίου (Council), ἀπεκρίθη (answered), “Καίσαρα (To Caesar) ἐπικέκλησαι (You have appealed); ἐπὶ (to) Καίσαρα (Caesar) πορεύσῃ (you will go)!”

² “Περὶ (Concerning) πάντων (all) ὧν (of which) ἐγκαλοῦμαι (I am accused) ὑπὸ (by) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews), βασιλεῦ (King) Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa), ἥγημαι (I esteem) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) μακάριον (fortunate) ἐπὶ (before) σοῦ (you), μέλλων (being about) σήμερον (today) ἀπολογεῖσθαι (to defend myself). ³ μάλιστα (Especially) γνώστην (acquainted) ὄντα (being) σε (you) πάντων (with all) τῶν (the) κατὰ (of) Ἰουδαίους (the Jews) ἐθῶν (customs), τε (and) καὶ (also) ζητημάτων (controversies); διὸ (therefore) δέομαι (I implore you) μακροθύμως (patiently) ἀκοῦσαί (to hear) μου (me).
