ἐκλογὴν (election) ποιεῖσθαι (to make), ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) ποιοῦντες (practicing) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) πταίσητέ (shall you stumble) ποτε (at any time). ¹¹ οὕτως (In this way) γὰρ (for) πλουσίως (richly) ἐπιχορηγηθήσεται (will be supplied) ὑμῖν (to you) ἡ (the) εἴσοδος (entrance) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αἰώνιον (eternal) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ). ¹² Διὸ (Therefore) μελλήσω (I will be ready) ἀεὶ (always) ὑμᾶς (you) ὑπομιμνῄσκειν (to remind) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), καίπερ (though) εἰδότας (knowing them) καὶ (and) ἐστηριγμένους (having been strengthened) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρούσῃ (being present in you) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). ¹³ δίκαιον (Right) δὲ (now) ἡγοῦμαι (I esteem it), ἐφ’ (as) ὅσον (long as) εἰμὶ (I am) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) τῷ (-) σκηνώματι (tabernacle), διεγείρειν (to stir up) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (by) ὑπομνήσει (putting you in remembrance), ¹⁴ εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) (glory), φωνῆς (a voice) ἐνεχθείσης (was brought) αὐτῷ (to Him), τοιᾶσδε (such as follows) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μεγαλοπρεποῦς (Majestic) δόξης (Glory): “Ὁ (The) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (-) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is), εἰς (in) ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εὐδόκησα (have found delight).” ¹⁸ καὶ (And) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) φωνὴν (voice) ἡμεῖς (we) ἠκούσαμεν (heard) ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἐνεχθεῖσαν (having been brought) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), ὄντες (being) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἁγίῳ (holy) ὄρει (mountain). ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔχομεν (we have) βεβαιότερον (more certain) τὸν (the) προφητικὸν (prophetic) λόγον (word), ᾧ (to which) καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you do) προσέχοντες (taking heed), ὡς (as) λύχνῳ (to a lamp) φαίνοντι (shining) ἐν (in) αὐχμηρῷ (a dark) τόπῳ (place), ἕως the will) ἀνθρώπου (of man) ἠνέχθη (was brought) προφητεία (prophecy) ποτέ (at any time), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (by) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) φερόμενοι (being carried), ἐλάλησαν (spoke) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἄνθρωποι (men).

¹⁸ Περιπατῶν (Walking) δὲ (now) παρὰ (beside) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (Sea) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), εἶδεν (He saw) δύο (two) ἀδελφούς (brothers), Σίμωνα (Simon) τὸν (-) λεγόμενον (called) Πέτρον (Peter), καὶ (and) Ἀνδρέαν (Andrew) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), βάλλοντας (casting) ἀμφίβληστρον (a net) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea); ἦσαν (they were) γὰρ (for) ἁλιεῖς (fishermen).

⁴⁷ καὶ (and) ἠγαλλίασεν (rejoices) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (spirit) μου (of me) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), τῷ (the) Σωτῆρί (Savior) μου (of me).

⁴⁹ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) σοφία (Wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ἀποστελῶ (I will send) εἰς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) ἀποστόλους (apostles), καὶ (and) ἐξ (some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) καὶ (and) διώξουσιν (persecute),’

³¹ Σίμων (Simon), Σίμων (Simon), ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) ἐξῃτήσατο (demanded to have) ὑμᾶς (all of you) τοῦ (-) σινιάσαι (to sift) ὡς (like) τὸν (-) σῖτον (wheat); ³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐδεήθην (begged) περὶ (for) σοῦ (you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐκλίπῃ (may fail) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you); καὶ (and) σύ (you), ποτε (when) ἐπιστρέψας (you have turned back), στήρισον (strengthen) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) σου (of you).” ³³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), μετὰ (with) σοῦ (You) ἕτοιμός (ready) εἰμι (I am) καὶ (both) εἰς (to) φυλακὴν (prison) καὶ (and) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) πορεύεσθαι (to go).” ³⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Λέγω (I tell) σοι (you) Πέτρε (Peter), οὐ (not) φωνήσει (will crow) σήμερον (today) ἀλέκτωρ (the rooster), ἕως (until) τρίς (three times) με (Me) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny) 〈μὴ〉 (not) εἰδέναι (knowing).”

⁴² ἤγαγεν (He led) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ἐμβλέψας (Having looked at) αὐτῷ (him), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) Σίμων (Simon) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) Ἰωάννου (of John); σὺ (You) κληθήσῃ (will be called) Κηφᾶς (Cephas)”— ὃ (which) ἑρμηνεύεται (means) Πέτρος (Peter).

²⁶ ἐὰν (If) ἐμοί (Me) τις (anyone) διακονῇ (serves), ἐμοὶ (Me) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) διάκονος (servant) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) ἔσται (will be). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἐμοὶ (Me) διακονῇ (serves), τιμήσει (will honor) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father).

²¹ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πάλιν (again), “Εἰρήνη (Peace) ὑμῖν (to you); καθὼς (as) ἀπέσταλκέν (has sent forth) με (me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) πέμπω (send) ὑμᾶς (you).”

⁸ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) καρδιογνώστης (heart-knowing) Θεὸς (God) ἐμαρτύρησεν (bore witness) αὐτοῖς (to them), δοὺς (having given them) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμῖν (to us), ⁹ καὶ (and) οὐθὲν (not one) διέκρινεν (He made distinction) μεταξὺ (between) ἡμῶν (us) τε (also) καὶ (and) αὐτῶν (them), τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) καθαρίσας (having purified) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁴ Συμεὼν (Simeon) ἐξηγήσατο (has related) καθὼς (how) πρῶτον (first) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπεσκέψατο (visited), λαβεῖν (to take) ἐξ (out of) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles) λαὸν (a people) τῷ (for the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁷ δικαιοσύνη (The righteousness) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it) ἀποκαλύπτεται (is revealed), ἐκ (from) πίστεως (faith) εἰς (to) πίστιν (faith), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) δίκαιος (the righteous) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) ζήσεται (will live).”

¹ Οὐκ (Not) εἰμὶ (am I) ἐλεύθερος (free)? οὐκ (Not) εἰμὶ (am I) ἀπόστολος (an apostle)? οὐχὶ (Not) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) ἑόρακα (have I seen)? οὐ (Not) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) μου (of me), ὑμεῖς (you) ἐστε (are), ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) γάρ (for) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἐλάχιστος (least) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles), ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἱκανὸς (fit) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) ἀπόστολος (an apostle), διότι (because) ἐδίωξα (I persecuted) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁰ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τὰ (the) μιάσματα (pollutions) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐν (through) ἐπιγνώσει (the knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τούτοις (in these) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) ἐμπλακέντες (having been entangled) ἡττῶνται (they are subdued), γέγονεν (has become) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last state) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first).

²⁴ οὓς (whom) καὶ (even) ἐκάλεσεν (He has called), ἡμᾶς (us) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐξ (out from) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐξ (out from) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles)?

⁹ πιστὸς (Faithful is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) ἐκλήθητε (you were called) εἰς (into) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) τοῦ (with the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁹ μὴ (not) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἢ (or) λοιδορίαν (insult) ἀντὶ (for) λοιδορίας (insult); τοὐναντίον (on the contrary) δὲ (however), εὐλογοῦντες (blessing), ὅτι (because) εἰς (to) τοῦτο (this) ἐκλήθητε (you were called), ἵνα (so that) εὐλογίαν (blessing) κληρονομήσητε (you should inherit).

⁴ οἵτινές (who) εἰσιν (are) Ἰσραηλῖται (Israelites), ὧν (whose is) ἡ (the) υἱοθεσία (divine adoption as sons), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) διαθῆκαι (covenants), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) νομοθεσία (lawgiving), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) λατρεία (service), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) ἐπαγγελίαι (promises);

²⁰ ὅσαι (As many as) γὰρ (for) ἐπαγγελίαι (promises) Θεοῦ (of God there are), ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) τὸ (is the) “Ναί (Yes).” διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) δι’ (in) αὐτοῦ (Him) τὸ (the) “Ἀμὴν (Amen)” τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) πρὸς (is for) δόξαν (glory) δι’ (by) ἡμῶν (us).

¹⁷ “Διὸ (Therefore) ἐξέλθατε (come out) ἐκ (from) μέσου (the midst) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἀφορίσθητε (be separate), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), καὶ (and) ἀκαθάρτου (unclean) μὴ (nothing) ἅπτεσθε (touch), κἀγὼ (and I) εἰσδέξομαι (will receive) ὑμᾶς (you).”

⁸ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the one) σπείρων (sowing) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself), ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh) θερίσει (will reap) φθοράν (decay). ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) σπείρων (sowing) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) θερίσει (will reap) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

²³ ἀνανεοῦσθαι (to be renewed) δὲ (then) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) ὑμῶν (of you), ²⁴ καὶ (and) ἐνδύσασθαι (to have put on) τὸν (the) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (-) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) κτισθέντα (having been created) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ὁσιότητι (holiness) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth).

⁶ Νυνὶ* (Now), δὲ (however), διαφορωτέρας (more excellent) τέτυχεν (He has obtained) λειτουργίας (a ministry), ὅσῳ (as much as) καὶ (also) κρείττονός (of a better) ἐστιν (He is) διαθήκης (covenant) μεσίτης (the mediator), ἥτις (which) ἐπὶ (upon) κρείττοσιν (better) ἐπαγγελίαις (promises) νενομοθέτηται (has been enacted). ⁷ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) πρώτη (first) ἐκείνη (that) ἦν (had been) ἄμεμπτος (faultless), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) δευτέρας (for a second) ἐζητεῖτο (would have been sought) τόπος (a place). ⁸ μεμφόμενος (Finding fault) γὰρ (for) αὐτοὺς (with them), λέγει (He says): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡμέραι (the days) ἔρχονται (are coming), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), καὶ (and) συντελέσω (I will ratify) ἐπὶ (with) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (with) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ἰούδα (of Judah), διαθήκην (a covenant) καινήν (new), ⁹ οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) διαθήκην (covenant) ἣν (that) ἐποίησα (I made) τοῖς (with) πατράσιν (fathers) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ἐπιλαβομένου (of having taken hold of) μου (by Me) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐξαγαγεῖν (to lead) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκ (out of) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt), ὅτι (because) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐκ (not) ἐνέμειναν (did continue) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διαθήκῃ (covenant) μου (of Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἠμέλησα (disregarded) αὐτῶν (them), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord). ¹⁰ ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this is) ἡ (the) διαθήκη (covenant) ἣν (that) διαθήσομαι (I will make) τῷ (with the) οἴκῳ (house) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), μετὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) ἐκείνας (those), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), διδοὺς (putting) νόμους (Laws) μου (of Me) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) διάνοιαν (mind) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιγράψω (I will inscribe) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἔσομαι (I will be) αὐτοῖς (to them) εἰς (for) Θεόν (God), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔσονταί (will be) μοι (to Me) εἰς (for) λαόν (a people). ¹¹ καὶ (And) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) διδάξωσιν (shall they teach) ἕκαστος (each) τὸν (the) πολίτην (neighbor) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἕκαστος (each) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγων (saying), ‘Γνῶθι (Know) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord),’ ὅτι (because) πάντες (all) εἰδήσουσίν (will know) με (Me), ἀπὸ (from) μικροῦ (the least) ἕως (to the) μεγάλου (greatest) αὐτῶν (of them), ¹² ὅτι (because) ἵλεως (merciful) ἔσομαι (I will be) ταῖς (toward the) ἀδικίαις (iniquities) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) μνησθῶ (I shall remember) ἔτι (more).

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), διαθήκης (of a covenant) καινῆς (new) μεσίτης (the mediator) ἐστίν (He is), ὅπως (so that), θανάτου (death) γενομένου (having taken place), εἰς (for) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τῶν (of the) ἐπὶ (under) τῇ (the) πρώτῃ (first) διαθήκῃ (covenant) παραβάσεων (transgressions), τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) λάβωσιν (might receive) οἱ (those) κεκλημένοι (having been called), τῆς (of the) αἰωνίου (eternal) κληρονομίας (inheritance).

¹⁰ Οἱ (-) μὲν (Truly) γὰρ (indeed) πρὸς (for) ὀλίγας (a few) ἡμέρας (days), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) δοκοῦν (seeming good) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἐπαίδευον (they were disciplining us); ὁ (-) δὲ (but He) ἐπὶ (for) τὸ (our) συμφέρον (benefitting), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) μεταλαβεῖν (to share) τῆς (of the) ἁγιότητος (holiness) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹ Πόθεν (From where) πόλεμοι (come disputes) καὶ (and) πόθεν (from where) μάχαι (quarrels) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you)? οὐκ (Is it not) ἐντεῦθεν (from there), ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ἡδονῶν (passions) ὑμῶν (of you) τῶν (-) στρατευομένων (warring) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ὑμῶν (of you)? ² ἐπιθυμεῖτε (You desire), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (have); φονεύετε (you kill) καὶ (and) ζηλοῦτε (covet), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐπιτυχεῖν (to obtain); μάχεσθε (You quarrel) καὶ (and) πολεμεῖτε (wrangle). οὐκ (Not) ἔχετε (you have), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αἰτεῖσθαι (ask) ὑμᾶς (you). ³ αἰτεῖτε (You ask) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λαμβάνετε (receive), διότι (because) κακῶς (wrongly) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ὑμῶν (of you), δαπανήσητε (you may spend it).

²¹ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however) ἠλπίζομεν (were hoping) ὅτι (-) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (it is) ὁ (who) μέλλων (is about) λυτροῦσθαι (to redeem) τὸν (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel). ἀλλά (But) γε (indeed) καὶ (also) σὺν (with) πᾶσιν (all) τούτοις (these things), τρίτην (the third) ταύτην (this) ἡμέραν (day) ἄγει (brings), ἀφ’ (away from) οὗ (which) ταῦτα (these things) ἐγένετο (came to pass).

⁶ Περὶ (About) δὲ (then) τὴν (the) ἑνδεκάτην (eleventh), ἐξελθὼν (having gone out), εὗρεν (he found) ἄλλους (others) ἑστῶτας (standing), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Τί (Why) ὧδε (here) ἑστήκατε (stand you) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) ἀργοί (idle)?’

²⁶ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Πονηρὲ (Wicked) δοῦλε (servant) καὶ (and) ὀκνηρέ (lazy)! ᾔδεις (You knew) ὅτι (that) θερίζω (I reap) ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) ἔσπειρα (I sowed), καὶ (and) συνάγω (gather) ὅθεν (from where) οὐ (not) διεσκόρπισα (I scattered).

² πᾶν (Every) κλῆμα (branch) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) φέρον (bearing) καρπὸν (fruit), αἴρει (He takes away) αὐτό (it); καὶ (and) πᾶν (every one) τὸ (-) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρον (bearing), καθαίρει (He prunes) αὐτὸ (it), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πλείονα (more) φέρῃ (it may bear).

⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned). ⁷ ἐὰν (If) μείνητε (you abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (abide), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you wish), αἰτήσασθε (you shall ask), καὶ (and) γενήσεται (it will come to pass) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁸ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πολὺν (much) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) γένησθε* (you shall be) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples).

¹³ Εἴτε (If) γὰρ (for) ἐξέστημεν (we are beside ourselves), Θεῷ (it is to God); εἴτε (or if) σωφρονοῦμεν (we are sober-minded) ὑμῖν (it is for you). ¹⁴ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) συνέχει (compels) ἡμᾶς (us), κρίναντας (having concluded) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) εἷς (One) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (has died), ἄρα (therefore) οἱ (-) πάντες (all) ἀπέθανον (have died). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (He died), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) ζῶντες (living), μηκέτι (no longer) ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ζῶσιν (should live), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (to the One) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποθανόντι (having died) καὶ (and) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised again). ¹⁶ Ὥστε (Therefore) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) οὐδένα (no one) οἴδαμεν (regard) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh). εἰ (Though) καὶ (even) ἐγνώκαμεν (we have regarded) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) Χριστόν (Christ), ἀλλὰ (yet) νῦν (now) οὐκέτι (no longer) γινώσκομεν (we regard Him thus). ¹⁷ ὥστε (Therefore) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ἐν (is in) Χριστῷ (Christ), καινὴ (he is a new) κτίσις (creation). τὰ (The) ἀρχαῖα (old things) παρῆλθεν (have passed away); ἰδοὺ (behold), γέγονεν (has come into being) καινά (the new).

² ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) πολλῇ (much) δοκιμῇ (proof) θλίψεως (of tribulation), ἡ (the) περισσεία (abundance) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) κατὰ (of) βάθους (deep) πτωχεία (poverty) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπερίσσευσεν (abounded) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (the) ἁπλότητος (generosity) αὐτῶν (of them).

⁷ ἀλλ’ (But) ὥσπερ (even as) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every way) περισσεύετε (you abound), πίστει (in faith), καὶ (and) λόγῳ (speech), καὶ (and) γνώσει (knowledge), καὶ (and) πάσῃ (all) σπουδῇ (earnestness), καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) ἐξ (from) ἡμῶν (us) ἐν (to) ὑμῖν (you) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (-) χάριτι (grace) περισσεύητε (you should abound).

¹⁴ καὶ (and) αὐτῶν (their) δεήσει (supplication) ὑπὲρ (is for) ὑμῶν (you), ἐπιποθούντων (a longing) ὑμᾶς (for you) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὑπερβάλλουσαν (surpassing) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμῖν (you).

⁵ Ἑαυτοὺς (Yourselves) πειράζετε (examine) εἰ (whether) ἐστὲ (you are) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith); ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) δοκιμάζετε (test). ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) ἐπιγινώσκετε (do you recognize) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ is) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), εἰ (if) μήτι (not) ἀδόκιμοί (unapproved) ἐστε (you are)?

⁵ Τοῦτο (This) φρονεῖτε (let mind be) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus was):

⁷ ἐρριζωμένοι (having been rooted) καὶ (and) ἐποικοδομούμενοι (being built up) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) βεβαιούμενοι (being strengthened in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) καθὼς (just as) ἐδιδάχθητε (you were taught), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (with) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving).

³ Εὐχαριστεῖν (To thank) ὀφείλομεν (we ought) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) πάντοτε (always) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καθὼς (just as) ἄξιόν (fitting) ἐστιν (it is), ὅτι (because) ὑπεραυξάνει (is increasing exceedingly) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πλεονάζει (is abounding) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) ἑνὸς (of one) ἑκάστου (each) πάντων (of all) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another);

¹⁴ μανθανέτωσαν (Let learn) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) οἱ (-) ἡμέτεροι (our people) καλῶν (good) ἔργων (works) προΐστασθαι (to devote themselves to), εἰς (for) τὰς (-) ἀναγκαίας (necessary) χρείας (needs), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὦσιν (they should be) ἄκαρποι (unfruitful).

²¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἐμβλέψας (having looked upon) αὐτῷ (him), ἠγάπησεν (loved) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἕν (One thing) σε (to you) ὑστερεῖ (is lacking). ὕπαγε (Go), ὅσα (as much as) ἔχεις (you have) πώλησον (sell), καὶ (and) δὸς (give) τοῖς (to the) πτωχοῖς (poor), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) θησαυρὸν (treasure) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven); καὶ (and) δεῦρο (come), ἀκολούθει (follow) μοι (Me).”

²² Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἔτι (Yet) ἕν (one thing) σοι (to you) λείπει (is lacking): πάντα (All), ὅσα (as much as) ἔχεις (you have), πώλησον (sell), καὶ (and) διάδος (distribute) πτωχοῖς (to the poor), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) θησαυρὸν (treasure) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); καὶ (and) δεῦρο (come), ἀκολούθει (follow) μοι (Me).”

⁴⁰ ἤκουσαν (Heard) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ταῦτα (these things), οἱ (who) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὄντες (were), καὶ (and) εἶπον* (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) τυφλοί (blind) ἐσμεν (are)?” ⁴¹ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) τυφλοὶ (blind) ἦτε (you were), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) εἴχετε (you would have) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); νῦν (since) δὲ (however) λέγετε (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλέπομεν (We see),’ ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ὑμῶν (of you) μένει (remains).”

¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say)? ἐπιμένωμεν (Shall we continue) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (in sin), ἵνα (that) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) πλεονάσῃ (may abound)? ² μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! οἵτινες (Who) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), πῶς (how) ἔτι (still) ζήσομεν (shall we live) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it)? ³ ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you unaware) ὅτι (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), εἰς (into) τὸν (the) θάνατον (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized)? ⁴ συνετάφημεν (We were buried) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (with Him) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) βαπτίσματος (baptism) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) θάνατον (death), ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἠγέρθη (was raised up) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) ζωῆς (of life) περιπατήσωμεν (should walk).

¹¹ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), λογίζεσθε (consider) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) εἶναι (to be) νεκροὺς (dead) μὲν (indeed) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ζῶντας (living) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

³ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) καὶ (indeed) ἔστιν (is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (to) τοῖς (those who) ἀπολλυμένοις (are perishing) ἐστὶν (it is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed), ⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁶ ἐν (In) γὰρ (for) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), οὔτε (neither) περιτομή (circumcision) τι (any) ἰσχύει (has power), οὔτε (nor) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision); ἀλλὰ (but only) πίστις (faith) δι’ (through) ἀγάπης (love) ἐνεργουμένη (working).

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

²⁶ ἵνα (so that) αὐτὴν (her) ἁγιάσῃ (He might sanctify), καθαρίσας (having cleansed her) τῷ (by the) λουτρῷ (washing) τοῦ (-) ὕδατος (of water) ἐν (by) ῥήματι (the word),

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

¹⁴ πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὃς (who) διὰ (through) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) αἰωνίου (eternal), ἑαυτὸν (Himself) προσήνεγκεν (offered) ἄμωμον (unblemished) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), καθαριεῖ (will purify) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀπὸ (from) νεκρῶν (dead) ἔργων (works), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) λατρεύειν (to serve) Θεῷ (God) ζῶντι (the living)!

¹⁴ Τί (What is) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), ἐὰν (if) πίστιν (faith) λέγῃ (says) τις (anyone) ἔχειν (to have), ἔργα (works) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχῃ (he has)? μὴ (Not) δύναται (is able) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σῶσαι (to save) αὐτόν (him)? ¹⁵ ἐὰν (Now if) ἀδελφὸς (a brother) ἢ (or) ἀδελφὴ (a sister) γυμνοὶ (without clothes) ὑπάρχωσιν (is), καὶ (and) λειπόμενοι (lacking) τῆς (-) ἐφημέρου (of daily) τροφῆς (food), ¹⁶ εἴπῃ (says) δέ (then) τις (anyone) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐξ (out from) ὑμῶν (you), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace); θερμαίνεσθε (be warmed) καὶ (and) χορτάζεσθε (be filled),” μὴ (not) δῶτε (gives) δὲ (however) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἐπιτήδεια (needful things) τοῦ (for the) σώματος (body), τί (what is) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit)? ¹⁷ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἔχῃ (it has) ἔργα (works), νεκρά (dead) ἐστιν (is), καθ’ (by) ἑαυτήν (itself). ¹⁸ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐρεῖ (will say) τις (someone), “Σὺ (You) πίστιν (faith) ἔχεις (have), κἀγὼ (and I) ἔργα (works) ἔχω (have).” δεῖξόν (Show) μοι (me) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) σου (of you) χωρὶς (without) τῶν (-) ἔργων (works), κἀγώ (and I) σοι (you) δείξω (will show) ἐκ (by) τῶν (the) ἔργων (works) μου (of me), τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith). ¹⁹ σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). καλῶς (Well) ποιεῖς (you are doing)! καὶ (Even) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons) πιστεύουσιν (believe that), καὶ (and) φρίσσουσιν (shudder)! ²⁰ Θέλεις (Do you want) δὲ (however) γνῶναι (to come to know), ὦ (O) ἄνθρωπε (man) κενέ (foolish), ὅτι (that) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith) χωρὶς (apart from) τῶν (-) ἔργων (works) ἀργή (worthless) ἐστιν (is)? ²¹ Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) ἡμῶν (of us), οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) ἐδικαιώθη (was justified), ἀνενέγκας (having offered) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar)? ²² βλέπεις (You see) ὅτι (that) ἡ (his) πίστις (faith) συνήργει (was working with) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐκ (by) τῶν (his) ἔργων (works), ἡ (his) πίστις (faith) ἐτελειώθη (was perfected). ²³ καὶ (And) ἐπληρώθη (was fulfilled) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) ἡ (-) λέγουσα (saying), “Ἐπίστευσεν (Believed) δὲ (then) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), καὶ (and) ἐλογίσθη (it was counted) αὐτῷ (to him) εἰς (for) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness),” καὶ (and) φίλος (a friend) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκλήθη (he was called). ²⁴ ὁρᾶτε (You see) ὅτι (that) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) δικαιοῦται (is justified) ἄνθρωπος (a man), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) μόνον (alone). ²⁵ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) Ῥαὰβ (Rahab) ἡ (the) πόρνη (prostitute) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) ἐδικαιώθη (was justified), ὑποδεξαμένη (having received) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (messengers) καὶ (and) ἑτέρᾳ (by another) ὁδῷ (way) ἐκβαλοῦσα (having sent them forth)? ²⁶ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) χωρὶς (apart from) πνεύματος (spirit) νεκρόν (dead) ἐστιν (is), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith) χωρὶς (apart from) ἔργων (works) νεκρά (dead) ἐστιν (is).

²¹ ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀντίτυπον (prefigures) νῦν (now) σῴζει (saving) βάπτισμα (baptism), οὐ (not) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἀπόθεσις (a putting away) ῥύπου (of the filth), ἀλλὰ (but) συνειδήσεως (of a conscience) ἀγαθῆς (good), ἐπερώτημα (the demand) εἰς (toward) Θεόν (God), δι’ (through) ἀναστάσεως (the resurrection) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

⁴ δι’ (through) ὧν (which) τὰ (the) τίμια (precious) καὶ (and) μέγιστα (magnificent) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐπαγγέλματα (promises) δεδώρηται (He has given), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τούτων (these) γένησθε (you might become) θείας (of the divine) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) φύσεως (nature), ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (desire), φθορᾶς (decay). ⁵ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸ (very reason) τοῦτο (for this) δὲ (now), σπουδὴν (earnestness) πᾶσαν (all) παρεισενέγκαντες (having brought in), ἐπιχορηγήσατε (supplement) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) τὴν (-) ἀρετήν (virtue), ἐν (into) δὲ (and) τῇ (-) ἀρετῇ (virtue) τὴν (-) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ⁶ ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) γνώσει (knowledge) τὴν (-) ἐγκράτειαν (self-control), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ἐγκρατείᾳ (self-control) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness), ⁷ ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) τὴν (-) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly affection), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (brotherly affection) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love).

⁷ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) περιπατῶμεν (we should walk) ὡς (as) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτί (light), κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχομεν (we have) μετ’ (with) ἀλλήλων (one another), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καθαρίζει (cleanses) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἁμαρτίας (sin).

⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now). ¹⁰ ὁ (The one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) σκάνδαλον (cause for stumbling) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is). ¹¹ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) μισῶν (hating) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) περιπατεῖ (walks); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (does he know) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹⁷ Ὅτι (For) λέγεις (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Πλούσιός (Rich) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) πεπλούτηκα (I have grown rich), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (of nothing) χρείαν (need) ἔχω (I have).’ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) οἶδας (do you realize) ὅτι (that) σὺ (you) εἶ (are) ὁ (-) ταλαίπωρος (wretched), καὶ (and) ἐλεεινὸς (miserable), καὶ (and) πτωχὸς (poor), καὶ (and) τυφλὸς (blind), καὶ (and) γυμνός (naked).

²⁴ Πᾶς (Everyone) οὖν (therefore), ὅστις (whoever) ἀκούει (hears) μου (My) τοὺς (-) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (does) αὐτούς (them), ὁμοιωθήσεται (will be like) ἀνδρὶ (a man) φρονίμῳ (wise), ὅστις (who) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) αὐτοῦ (his) τὴν (-) οἰκίαν (house) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) πέτραν (rock). ²⁵ καὶ (And) κατέβη (came down) ἡ (the) βροχὴ (rain), καὶ (and) ἦλθον (came) οἱ (the) ποταμοὶ (torrents), καὶ (and) ἔπνευσαν (blew) οἱ (the) ἄνεμοι (winds), καὶ (and) προσέπεσαν (beat) τῇ (that) οἰκίᾳ (house) ἐκείνῃ (upon); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔπεσεν (it fell), τεθεμελίωτο (it had been founded) γὰρ (for) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) πέτραν (rock).

⁴⁷ Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (who) ἐρχόμενος (is coming) πρός (to) με (Me), καὶ (and) ἀκούων (hearing) μου (of Me) τῶν (the) λόγων (words), καὶ (and) ποιῶν (doing) αὐτούς (them), ὑποδείξω (I will show) ὑμῖν (you) τίνι (whom) ἐστὶν (he is) ὅμοιος (like). ⁴⁸ ὅμοιός (Like) ἐστιν (he is) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man) οἰκοδομοῦντι (building) οἰκίαν (a house), ὃς (who) ἔσκαψεν (dug) καὶ (and) ἐβάθυνεν (deepened), καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (laid) θεμέλιον (a foundation) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) πέτραν (rock); πλημμύρης (a flood) δὲ (then) γενομένης (having come), προσέρηξεν (burst upon) ὁ (the) ποταμὸς (stream) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσεν (was able) σαλεῦσαι (to shake) αὐτὴν (it), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) καλῶς (well) οἰκοδομῆσθαι (had been built) αὐτήν (it). ⁴⁹ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) ἀκούσας (having heard), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ποιήσας (having done), ὅμοιός (like) ἐστιν (is) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man) οἰκοδομήσαντι (having built) οἰκίαν (a house) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground) χωρὶς (without) θεμελίου (a foundation), ᾗ (on which) προσέρηξεν (burst) ὁ (the) ποταμός (stream), καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (immediately) συνέπεσεν (it fell), καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (was) τὸ (the) ῥῆγμα (ruin) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) ἐκείνης (that) μέγα (great).”

²⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐδενὸς (not any) λόγου (account) ποιοῦμαι (I make) τὴν (my) ψυχὴν (life) τιμίαν (dear) ἐμαυτῷ (to myself), ὡς (so as) τελειῶσαι* (to finish) τὸν (the) δρόμον (course) μου (of me), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ἣν (that) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ²⁵ Καὶ (And) νῦν (now), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) οἶδα (know) ὅτι (that) οὐκέτι (no more) ὄψεσθε (you will see) τὸ (the) πρόσωπόν (face) μου (of me), ὑμεῖς (you) πάντες (all) ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) διῆλθον (I have gone about) κηρύσσων (proclaiming) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom).

²⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), πάντα (all things) συνεργεῖ (works together) (ὁ (-) θεὸς) (God) εἰς (for) ἀγαθόν (good), τοῖς (to those) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (His purpose) κλητοῖς (called) οὖσιν (being). ²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers). ³⁰ οὓς (Those whom) δὲ (then) προώρισεν (He predestined), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐκάλεσεν (He called); καὶ (and) οὓς (whom) ἐκάλεσεν (He called), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified); οὓς (whom) δὲ (then) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδόξασεν (He glorified). ³¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say) πρὸς (to) ταῦτα (these things)? εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God is) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), τίς (who can be) καθ’ (against) ἡμῶν (us)?

¹⁹ Ὁ (-) μέντοι (Nevertheless), στερεὸς (the firm) θεμέλιος (foundation) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God) ἕστηκεν (stands), ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) σφραγῖδα (seal) ταύτην (this): “Ἔγνω (Knows) Κύριος (the Lord) τοὺς (those) ὄντας (being) αὐτοῦ (His),” καί (and), “Ἀποστήτω (Let depart) ἀπὸ (from) ἀδικίας (iniquity) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀνομάζων (naming) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).”

¹⁹ ἣν (which) ὡς (as) ἄγκυραν (an anchor) ἔχομεν (we have) τῆς (of the) ψυχῆς (soul), ἀσφαλῆ (sure) τε (both) καὶ (and) βεβαίαν (unshakable) καὶ (and) εἰσερχομένην (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (that) ἐσώτερον (within) τοῦ (the) καταπετάσματος (veil),

¹⁷ Ὑμεῖς (You) οὖν (therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), προγινώσκοντες (knowing this beforehand), φυλάσσεσθε (beware), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) τῇ (by the) τῶν (of the) ἀθέσμων (lawless) πλάνῃ (error) συναπαχθέντες (having been led away), ἐκπέσητε (you should fall from) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) στηριγμοῦ (steadfastness).

¹⁹ [καὶ] (And) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) γνωσόμεθα (we will know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἐσμέν (we are), καὶ (and) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πείσομεν (we will assure) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), ²⁰ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) καταγινώσκῃ (should condemn us) ἡμῶν (our) ἡ (-) καρδία (heart), ὅτι (that) μείζων (greater than) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) γινώσκει (He knows) πάντα (all things). ²¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἐὰν (if) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) «μὴ (not) καταγινώσκῃ» (should condemn us), παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),

¹⁰ Ὅτι (Because) ἐτήρησας (you have kept) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) ὑπομονῆς (patient endurance) μου (of Me), κἀγώ (I also) σε (you) τηρήσω (will keep) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) τοῦ (of the) πειρασμοῦ (trial) τῆς (-) μελλούσης (being about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) οἰκουμένης (inhabited world) ὅλης (whole), πειράσαι (to try) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth). ¹¹ ἔρχομαι (I am coming) ταχύ (quickly). κράτει (Hold fast) ὃ (to what) ἔχεις (you have), ἵνα (so that) μηδεὶς (no one) λάβῃ (may take) τὸν (the) στέφανόν (crown) σου (of you).

¹⁴ Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (those) πλύνοντες (washing) τὰς (the) στολὰς (robes) αὐτῶν (of them), ἵνα (that) ἔσται (will be) ἡ (the) ἐξουσία (right) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life), καὶ (and) τοῖς (by the) πυλῶσιν (gates) εἰσέλθωσιν (they shall enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city).

³⁴ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will say) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῖς (to those) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Δεῦτε (Come), οἱ (those) εὐλογημένοι (being blessed) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), κληρονομήσατε (inherit) τὴν (the) ἡτοιμασμένην (having been prepared) ὑμῖν (for you) βασιλείαν (kingdom) ἀπὸ (from the) καταβολῆς (foundation) κόσμου (of the world).

¹⁰ ὁ (The) κλέπτης (thief) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (that) κλέψῃ (he might steal), καὶ (and) θύσῃ (might kill), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσῃ (might destroy). ἐγὼ (I) ἦλθον (came) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχωσιν (they may have), καὶ (and) περισσὸν (abundantly) ἔχωσιν (may have it).

¹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ἡ (-) ἐπίγειος (earthly) ἡμῶν (of us) οἰκία (house), τοῦ (the) σκήνους (tent), καταλυθῇ (should be destroyed), οἰκοδομὴν (a building) ἐκ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἔχομεν (we have), οἰκίαν (a house) ἀχειροποίητον (not made with hands), αἰώνιον (eternal) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

²⁰ Τῷ (To the One) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) ὑπὲρ (above) πάντα (all things) ποιῆσαι (to do) ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ (exceedingly) ὧν (that) αἰτούμεθα (we ask) ἢ (or) νοοῦμεν (think), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) δύναμιν (power) τὴν (-) ἐνεργουμένην (working) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us),

⁸ λοιπὸν (From now on) ἀπόκειταί (is laid up) μοι (for me) ὁ (the) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) στέφανος (crown), ὃν (which) ἀποδώσει (will award) μοι (to me) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ὁ (the) δίκαιος (righteous) κριτής (judge); οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (however) ἐμοὶ (to me), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) πᾶσι (to all) τοῖς (those) ἠγαπηκόσι (loving) τὴν (the) ἐπιφάνειαν (appearing) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) περισσότερον (more abundantly) βουλόμενος (desiring) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to show) τοῖς (to the) κληρονόμοις (heirs) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) τὸ (the) ἀμετάθετον (unchangeableness) τῆς (of the) βουλῆς (purpose) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐμεσίτευσεν (guaranteed it) ὅρκῳ (by an oath),

²¹ Ὁ (The one) νικῶν (overcoming), δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) καθίσαι (to sit) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne) μου (of Me), ὡς (as) κἀγὼ (I also) ἐνίκησα (overcame) καὶ (and) ἐκάθισα (sat down) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐποίησας (You have made) αὐτοὺς (them) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), βασιλείαν (a kingdom) καὶ (and) ἱερεῖς (priests); καὶ (and) βασιλεύσουσιν (they will reign) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).”

⁵ Αἱ (The) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἐκκλησίαι (churches) ἐστερεοῦντο (were strengthened) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), καὶ (and) ἐπερίσσευον (were increasing) τῷ (-) ἀριθμῷ (in number) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day).

¹⁴ Πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) δέ (now), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (you yourselves) μεστοί (full) ἐστε (are) ἀγαθωσύνης (of goodness), πεπληρωμένοι (being filled) πάσης (with all) τῆς (-) γνώσεως (knowledge), δυνάμενοι (being able) καὶ (also) ἀλλήλους (one another) νουθετεῖν (to admonish). ¹⁵ τολμηρότερον* (More boldly) δὲ (however) ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part), ὡς (as) ἐπαναμιμνήσκων (reminding) ὑμᾶς (you), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (-) δοθεῖσάν (having been given) μοι (to me) ὑπὸ* (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God)

¹ Τὸ (-) λοιπόν (Finally), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), χαίρετε (rejoice) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord). τὰ (The) αὐτὰ (same things) γράφειν (to write) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐμοὶ (to me) μὲν (indeed) οὐκ (is not) ὀκνηρόν (troublesome); ὑμῖν (for you) δὲ (now) ἀσφαλές (is safe).

⁶ Ταῦτα (These things) ὑποτιθέμενος (laying before) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers), καλὸς (good) ἔσῃ (you will be) διάκονος (a servant) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐντρεφόμενος (being nourished) τοῖς (in the) λόγοις (words) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) καλῆς (good) διδασκαλίας (teaching) ᾗ (that) παρηκολούθηκας (you have closely followed).

⁶ Δι’ (For) ἣν (this) αἰτίαν (reason) ἀναμιμνῄσκω (I remind) σε (you) ἀναζωπυρεῖν (to kindle anew) τὸ (the) χάρισμα (gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (in) σοὶ (you) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐπιθέσεως (laying on) τῶν (of the) χειρῶν (hands) μου (of me).

³² Ἀναμιμνῄσκεσθε (Remember) δὲ (however) τὰς (the) πρότερον (former) ἡμέρας (days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which), φωτισθέντες (having been enlightened), πολλὴν (a great) ἄθλησιν (conflict) ὑπεμείνατε (you endured) παθημάτων (of sufferings),

⁹ Διδαχαῖς (By teachings) ποικίλαις (various) καὶ (and) ξέναις (strange), μὴ (not) παραφέρεσθε (be carried away); καλὸν (it is good) γὰρ (for) χάριτι (by grace) βεβαιοῦσθαι (to be strengthened) τὴν (for the) καρδίαν (heart), οὐ (not) βρώμασιν (foods), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) οὐκ (not) ὠφελήθησαν (were profited) οἱ (those) περιπατοῦντες (being devoted).

¹³ δίκαιον (Right) δὲ (now) ἡγοῦμαι (I esteem it), ἐφ’ (as) ὅσον (long as) εἰμὶ (I am) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) τῷ (-) σκηνώματι (tabernacle), διεγείρειν (to stir up) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (by) ὑπομνήσει (putting you in remembrance),

¹⁵ σπουδάσω (I will be diligent) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἑκάστοτε (at every time), ἔχειν (to have) ὑμᾶς (for you) μετὰ (after) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (my) ἔξοδον (departure), τὴν (-) τούτων (these things) μνήμην (a lasting remembrance) ποιεῖσθαι (to make).

¹ Ταύτην (This) ἤδη (now), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), δευτέραν (is the second) ὑμῖν (to you) γράφω (I am writing) ἐπιστολήν (letter), ἐν (in) αἷς (which) διεγείρω (I am stirring up) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) ὑπομνήσει (putting you in remembrance) τὴν (-) εἰλικρινῆ (pure) διάνοιαν (mind),

²¹ οὐκ (Not) ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (because) οἴδατε (you know) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ὅτι (because) πᾶν (any) ψεῦδος (lie), ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is).

² διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) τὴν (-) μένουσαν (abiding) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) καὶ (and) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) ἔσται (that will be) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age): ³ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), πᾶσαν (all) σπουδὴν (diligence) ποιούμενος (using) γράφειν (to write) ὑμῖν (to you) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (-) κοινῆς (common) ἡμῶν (of us) σωτηρίας (salvation), ἀνάγκην (necessity) ἔσχον (I had) γράψαι (to write) ὑμῖν (to you), παρακαλῶν (exhorting you) ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι (to contend earnestly) τῇ (for the) ἅπαξ (once for all) παραδοθείσῃ (having been delivered) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) πίστει (faith).

⁵ Ὑπομνῆσαι (To remind) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) βούλομαι (I want), εἰδότας (having known) ‹ὑμᾶς› (you) ἅπαξ (at one time) «πάντα (all this), ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς» (Jesus) λαὸν (a people) ἐκ (out of) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt) σώσας (having saved), τὸ (-) δεύτερον (afterward) τοὺς (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντας (having believed), ἀπώλεσεν (He destroyed).

¹⁷ Ὑμεῖς (You) δέ (however), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), μνήσθητε (remember) τῶν (the) ῥημάτων (words) τῶν (-) προειρημένων (having been spoken beforehand) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

⁸ Θαρροῦμεν (We are confident) δὲ (now), καὶ (and) εὐδοκοῦμεν (are pleased), μᾶλλον (rather) ἐκδημῆσαι (to be absent) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), καὶ (and) ἐνδημῆσαι (to be at home) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord).

³ μιμνῄσκεσθε (Remember) τῶν (-) δεσμίων (prisoners) ὡς (as) συνδεδεμένοι (being bound with them), τῶν (those) κακουχουμένων (being mistreated) ὡς (as) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (yourselves) ὄντες (being) ἐν (in) σώματι (the body).

¹² Διὸ (Therefore) μελλήσω (I will be ready) ἀεὶ (always) ὑμᾶς (you) ὑπομιμνῄσκειν (to remind) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), καίπερ (though) εἰδότας (knowing them) καὶ (and) ἐστηριγμένους (having been strengthened) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρούσῃ (being present in you) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).

¹⁴ εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) ταχινή (impending) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀπόθεσις (putting off) τοῦ (of the) σκηνώματός (tabernacle) μου (of me), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐδήλωσέν (has made clear) μοι (to me).

¹⁸ Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ὅτε (When) ἦς (you were) νεώτερος (younger), ἐζώννυες (you dressed) σεαυτὸν (yourself) καὶ (and) περιεπάτεις (walked) ὅπου (where) ἤθελες (you desired); ὅταν (when) δὲ (however) γηράσῃς (you shall be old), ἐκτενεῖς (you will stretch forth) τὰς (the) χεῖράς (hands) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἄλλος (another) ζώσει (will dress) σε (you) καὶ (and) οἴσει (will bring you) ὅπου (where) οὐ (not) θέλεις (you do desire).” ¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) εἶπεν (He said) σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (by what) θανάτῳ (death) δοξάσει (he will glorify) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) εἰπὼν (having said), λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀκολούθει (Follow) μοι (Me).”

²⁵ Καὶ (And) νῦν (now), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) οἶδα (know) ὅτι (that) οὐκέτι (no more) ὄψεσθε (you will see) τὸ (the) πρόσωπόν (face) μου (of me), ὑμεῖς (you) πάντες (all) ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) διῆλθον (I have gone about) κηρύσσων (proclaiming) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom).

⁶ Ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ἤδη (already) σπένδομαι (am being poured out), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (time) τῆς (of the) ἀναλύσεώς (departure) μου (of me) ἐφέστηκεν (is come).

³¹ οἳ (Those) ὀφθέντες (having appeared) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory) ἔλεγον (were speaking of) τὴν (the) ἔξοδον (going out) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἣν (which) ἤμελλεν (He was about) πληροῦν (to accomplish) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

² καὶ (And) ἃ (the things which) ἤκουσας (you have heard) παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) διὰ (among) πολλῶν (many) μαρτύρων (witnesses), ταῦτα (these) παράθου (entrust) πιστοῖς (to faithful) ἀνθρώποις (men), οἵτινες (such as) ἱκανοὶ (sufficient) ἔσονται (will be) καὶ (also) ἑτέρους (others) διδάξαι (to teach).

⁴ Πίστει (By faith) πλείονα (a more excellent) θυσίαν (sacrifice) Ἅβελ (Abel) παρὰ (than) Κάϊν (Cain) προσήνεγκεν (offered) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), δι’ (through) ἧς (which) ἐμαρτυρήθη (he was testified) εἶναι (to be) δίκαιος (righteous), μαρτυροῦντος (bearing witness) ἐπὶ (to) τοῖς (the) δώροις (gifts) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God); καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτῆς (it), ἀποθανὼν (having died), ἔτι (still) λαλεῖ (he speaks).

²⁸ Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (-), εἰσίν (there are) τινες (some) τῶν (of those) ὧδε (here) ἑστώτων (standing) οἵτινες (who) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) γεύσωνται (shall taste) θανάτου (of death) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἴδωσιν (they have seen) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him).”

³ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (He) ἐπὶ (upon) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), προσῆλθον (came to) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰπὲ (Tell) ἡμῖν (us), πότε (when) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be)? καὶ (And) τί (what is) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) τῆς (-) σῆς (of Your) παρουσίας (coming) καὶ (and) συντελείας (of the consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age)?”

²⁷ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἀστραπὴ (lightning) ἐξέρχεται (comes forth) ἀπὸ (from the) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) φαίνεται (shines) ἕως (as far as the) δυσμῶν (west), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ἡ (the) παρουσία (coming) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).

²⁸ Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (now) μετὰ (after) τοὺς (the) λόγους (sayings) τούτους (these), ὡσεὶ (about) ἡμέραι (days) ὀκτὼ (eight), καὶ (and) παραλαβὼν (having taken) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννην (John) καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβον (James), ἀνέβη (He went up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) προσεύξασθαι (to pray). ²⁹ καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) προσεύχεσθαι (praying) αὐτὸν (of Him), τὸ (the) εἶδος (appearance) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἕτερον (was altered), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἱματισμὸς (clothing) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λευκὸς (white) ἐξαστράπτων (became dazzling). ³⁰ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄνδρες (men) δύο (two) συνελάλουν (began talking with) αὐτῷ (Him), οἵτινες (who) ἦσαν (were) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) καὶ (and) Ἠλίας (Elijah). ³¹ οἳ (Those) ὀφθέντες (having appeared) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory) ἔλεγον (were speaking of) τὴν (the) ἔξοδον (going out) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἣν (which) ἤμελλεν (He was about) πληροῦν (to accomplish) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem). ³² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (him) ἦσαν (were) βεβαρημένοι (heavy) ὕπνῳ (with sleep); διαγρηγορήσαντες (having awoken fully) δὲ (then) εἶδον* (they saw) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἄνδρας (men) τοὺς (-) συνεστῶτας (standing with) αὐτῷ (Him).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐγένετο (became) καὶ (and) ἐσκήνωσεν (dwelt) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), καὶ (and) ἐθεασάμεθα (we beheld) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δόξαν (a glory) ὡς (as) μονογενοῦς (of an only begotten) παρὰ (from) Πατρός (the Father), πλήρης (full) χάριτος (of grace) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (truth).

² καθὼς (As) ἔδωκας (You gave) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐξουσίαν (authority) πάσης (over all) σαρκός (flesh), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (all) ὃ (whom) δέδωκας (You have given) αὐτῷ (Him), δώσῃ (He may give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

⁴ τοῦ (-) ὁρισθέντος (having been declared) Υἱοῦ (Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) κατὰ (according to the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἁγιωσύνης (of holiness) ἐξ (by) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) νεκρῶν (from the dead), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us);

⁷ ὥστε (so as for) ὑμᾶς (you) μὴ (not) ὑστερεῖσθαι (to be lacking) ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (not one) χαρίσματι (gift), ἀπεκδεχομένους (eagerly awaiting) τὴν (the) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

¹⁷ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλέν (sent) με (me) Χριστὸς (Christ) βαπτίζειν (to baptize), ἀλλὰ (but) εὐαγγελίζεσθαι (to preach the gospel), οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) λόγου (of discourse), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) κενωθῇ (be emptied of power) ὁ (the) σταυρὸς (cross) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

²³ ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) κηρύσσομεν (preach) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐσταυρωμένον (having been crucified), Ἰουδαίοις (to the Jewish) μὲν (indeed) σκάνδαλον (a stumbling block), ἔθνεσιν (to Gentiles) δὲ (now) μωρίαν (foolishness);

¹ Κἀγὼ (And I), ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἦλθον (came) οὐ (not) καθ’ (according to) ὑπεροχὴν (excellency) λόγου (of speech), ἢ (or) σοφίας (wisdom), καταγγέλλων (proclaiming) ὑμῖν (to you) τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) λόγος (message) μου (of me) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμά (preaching) μου (of me) οὐκ (were not) ἐν (in) πειθοῖς (persuasive) σοφίας (of wisdom) λόγοις (words), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) ἀποδείξει (demonstration) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) καὶ (and) δυνάμεως (of power),

⁴ ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ‹ἡμῶν› (our) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) συναχθέντων (having been gathered together) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) ἐμοῦ (of me) πνεύματος (in spirit), σὺν (with) τῇ (the) δυνάμει (power) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus),

¹⁷ Οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (we are), ὡς (like) οἱ (the) πολλοὶ (many), καπηλεύοντες (peddling) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) εἰλικρινείας (sincerity), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐκ (of) Θεοῦ (God), κατέναντι (before) Θεοῦ (God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) λαλοῦμεν (we speak).

² ἀλλὰ (But) ἀπειπάμεθα (we have renounced) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τῆς (-) αἰσχύνης (of shame), μὴ (not) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) μηδὲ (nor) δολοῦντες (falsifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) φανερώσει (by manifestation) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) συνιστάνοντες (commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πρὸς (to) πᾶσαν (every) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹⁶ Ἔστω (Be it so) δέ (however), ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κατεβάρησα (did burden) ὑμᾶς (you); ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπάρχων (being) πανοῦργος (crafty), δόλῳ (by trickery) ὑμᾶς (you) ἔλαβον (I caught). ¹⁷ μή (Not) τινα (any) ὧν (of whom) ἀπέσταλκα (I have sent) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐπλεονέκτησα (did I exploit) ὑμᾶς (you)?

¹⁴ ἵνα (so that) μηκέτι (no longer) ὦμεν (we might be) νήπιοι (infants), κλυδωνιζόμενοι (being tossed by waves) καὶ (and) περιφερόμενοι (being carried about) παντὶ (by every) ἀνέμῳ (wind) τῆς (-) διδασκαλίας (of teaching), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κυβείᾳ* (cunning) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness), πρὸς (with a view to) τὴν (the) μεθοδείαν (scheming) τῆς (-) πλάνης (of deceit).

²¹ ὃς (who) μετασχηματίσει (will transform) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τῆς (-) ταπεινώσεως (of humiliation) ἡμῶν (of us), σύμμορφον (conformed) τῷ (to the) σώματι (body) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Himself), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (working) τοῦ (-) δύνασθαι (enabling) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (even) ὑποτάξαι (to subdue) αὑτῷ (to Himself) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things).

¹⁹ τίς (Who is) γὰρ (for) ἡμῶν (our) ἐλπὶς (hope), ἢ (or) χαρὰ (joy), ἢ (or) στέφανος (crown) καυχήσεως (of boasting)? ἢ (Or) οὐχὶ (are not) καὶ (even) ὑμεῖς (you), ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐν (at) τῇ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) παρουσίᾳ (coming)?

⁹ οὗ (whose) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (-) παρουσία (coming), κατ’ (according to) ἐνέργειαν (the working) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ἐν (in) πάσῃ (every) δυνάμει (power), καὶ (and) σημείοις (in signs), καὶ (and) τέρασιν (in wonders) ψεύδους (of falsehood),

⁴ μηδὲ (nor) προσέχειν (to give heed) μύθοις (to myths) καὶ (and) γενεαλογίαις (genealogies) ἀπεράντοις (endless), αἵτινες (which) ἐκζητήσεις (speculations) παρέχουσιν (bring), μᾶλλον (rather) ἢ (than) οἰκονομίαν (stewardship) Θεοῦ (of God), τὴν (which is) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith).

⁷ Τοὺς (-) δὲ (But) βεβήλους (profane) καὶ (and) γραώδεις (silly) μύθους (fables) παραιτοῦ (refuse). γύμναζε (Train) δὲ (rather) σεαυτὸν (yourself) πρὸς (to) εὐσέβειαν (godliness).

¹⁴ μὴ (not) προσέχοντες (giving heed) Ἰουδαϊκοῖς (to Jewish) μύθοις (myths) καὶ (and) ἐντολαῖς (the commandments) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀποστρεφομένων (turning away from) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth).

³ τοῦτο (this) πρῶτον (first) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτων (the last) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐν (with) ἐμπαιγμονῇ (scoffing) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (-) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (evil desires) αὐτῶν (of them) πορευόμενοι (following) ⁴ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ποῦ (Where) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise) τῆς (of the) παρουσίας (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him)? ἀφ’ (From) ἧς (the time that) γὰρ (for) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἐκοιμήθησαν (fell asleep), πάντα (all things) οὕτως (as they were) διαμένει (continue) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) κτίσεως (of creation).”

¹⁴ καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) τεθεάμεθα (have seen) καὶ (and) μαρτυροῦμεν (testify) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀπέσταλκεν (has sent) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son as) Σωτῆρα (Savior) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

¹⁴ Προεφήτευσεν* (Prophesied) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τούτοις (as to these) ἕβδομος (the seventh) ἀπὸ (from) Ἀδὰμ (Adam), Ἑνὼχ (Enoch), λέγων (saying): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἦλθεν (has come) Κύριος (the Lord) ἐν (amidst) ἁγίαις (holy ones) μυριάσιν (myriads) αὐτοῦ (of His),

⁷ Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἔρχεται (He is coming) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds), καὶ (and) ὄψεται (will see) αὐτὸν (Him) πᾶς (every) ὀφθαλμὸς (eye), καὶ (and) οἵτινες (those who) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐξεκέντησαν (pierced), καὶ (and) κόψονται (will wail) ἐπ’ (because of) αὐτὸν (Him) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) φυλαὶ (tribes) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth). ναί (Yes)! ἀμήν (Amen)!

¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I was well pleased).”

²⁵ Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῳ (that) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐξομολογοῦμαί (I fully consent) σοι (to You), Πάτερ (Father), Κύριε (Lord) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ὅτι (that) ἔκρυψας (You did hide) ταῦτα (these things) ἀπὸ (from) σοφῶν (wise) καὶ (and) συνετῶν (learned), καὶ (and) ἀπεκάλυψας (did reveal) αὐτὰ (them) νηπίοις (to little children). ²⁶ ναί (Yes), ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father), ὅτι (for) οὕτως (thus) εὐδοκία (well-pleasing) ἐγένετο (it was) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You). ²⁷ Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (have been delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me). καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐπιγινώσκει (knows) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father); οὐδὲ (nor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) τις (anyone) ἐπιγινώσκει (does know), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (might choose) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).

¹⁸ “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὁ (the) παῖς (servant) μου (of Me), ὃν (whom) ᾑρέτισα (I have chosen), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), ‹εἰς› (in) ὃν (whom) εὐδόκησεν (has found delight) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me). θήσω (I will put) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) μου (of Me) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) κρίσιν (justice) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἀπαγγελεῖ (He will proclaim).

³ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ὤφθη (appeared) αὐτοῖς (to them) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) καὶ (and) Ἠλίας (Elijah), συλλαλοῦντες* (talking) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him).

⁵ Ἔτι (While yet) αὐτοῦ (he) λαλοῦντος (was speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), νεφέλη (a cloud) φωτεινὴ (bright) ἐπεσκίασεν (overshadowed) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased). ἀκούετε (Listen) αὐτοῦ (to Him)!”

¹⁹ πορευθέντες (Having gone) οὖν (therefore), μαθητεύσατε (disciple) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), βαπτίζοντες (baptizing) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit),

¹¹ καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐγένετο (came) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) οὐρανῶν (heavens): “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) σοὶ (You) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased).”

⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (there came) νεφέλη (a cloud) ἐπισκιάζουσα (overshadowing) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (there came) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud): “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved); ἀκούετε (listen you) αὐτοῦ (to Him).”

²² καὶ (and) καταβῆναι (descended) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) σωματικῷ (in a bodily) εἴδει (form) ὡς (as) περιστερὰν (a dove) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) φωνὴν (a voice) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) γενέσθαι (came): “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved); ἐν (in) σοὶ (You) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased).”

³⁴ Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (as he) λέγοντος (is saying), ἐγένετο (came) νεφέλη (a cloud) καὶ (and) ἐπεσκίαζεν (was overshadowing) αὐτούς (them); ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εἰσελθεῖν (entering) αὐτοὺς (of them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) νεφέλην (cloud). ³⁵ καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐγένετο (came) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (-) ἐκλελεγμένος (whom I have chosen); αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀκούετε (listen to)!”

³⁵ Ὁ (The) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) τὸν (the) Υἱόν (Son), καὶ (and) πάντα (all things) δέδωκεν (has given) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²¹ Ὥσπερ (Even as) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐγείρει (raises up) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) καὶ (and) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life), οὕτως (thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) οὓς (to whom) θέλει (He will), ζωοποιεῖ (gives life). ²² οὐδὲ (Not even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) κρίνει (judges) οὐδένα (no one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (judgment) πᾶσαν (all) δέδωκεν (has given) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son), ²³ ἵνα (so that) πάντες (all) τιμῶσι (may honor) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), καθὼς (even as) τιμῶσι (they honor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father). ὁ (He who) μὴ (not) τιμῶν (is honoring) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), οὐ (not) τιμᾷ (is honoring) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), τὸν (the One) πέμψαντα (having sent) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁶ ὥσπερ (As) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son) ἔδωκεν (He gave) ζωὴν (life), ἔχειν (to have) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself).

³⁶ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔχω (have) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) μείζω (greater than) τοῦ (that) Ἰωάννου (of John). τὰ (-) γὰρ (For) ἔργα (the works) ἃ (that) δέδωκέν (has given) μοι (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἵνα (that) τελειώσω (I should complete) αὐτά (them), αὐτὰ (same) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἃ (which) ποιῶ (I do), μαρτυρεῖ (bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) με (Me) ἀπέσταλκεν (has sent). ³⁷ καὶ (And) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me), Πατὴρ (the Father) ἐκεῖνος (Himself), μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). οὔτε (Neither) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πώποτε (at any time) ἀκηκόατε (have You heard), οὔτε (nor) εἶδος (form) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἑωράκατε (have you seen).

³⁷ Πᾶν (All) ὃ (that) δίδωσίν (gives) μοι (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), πρὸς (to) ἐμὲ (Me) ἥξει (will come), καὶ (and) τὸν (the one) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρός (to) με (Me), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἐκβάλω (shall I cast) ἔξω (out).

³⁹ Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), ἵνα (that) πᾶν (all) ὃ (that) δέδωκέν (He has given) μοι (Me), μὴ (none) ἀπολέσω (I should lose) ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (it), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀναστήσω (will raise up) αὐτὸ (it) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).

¹⁵ καθὼς (As) γινώσκει (knows) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) γινώσκω (know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of Me) τίθημι (I lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep).

³⁶ ὃν (of Him whom) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἡγίασεν (sanctified) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (do say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλασφημεῖς (You blaspheme),’ ὅτι (because) εἶπον (I said), ‘Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰμι (I am)’?

²⁸ Πάτερ (Father), δόξασόν (glorify) σου (of You) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name).” Ἦλθεν (Came) οὖν (therefore) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven): “Καὶ (Both) ἐδόξασα (I have glorified it), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) δοξάσω (I will glorify it).” ²⁹ Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) ὄχλος (the crowd) ὁ (-) ἑστὼς (having stood) καὶ (and) ἀκούσας (having heard) ἔλεγεν (was saying), “Βροντὴν (Thunder) γεγονέναι (there has been).” ἄλλοι (Others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἄγγελος (An angel) αὐτῷ (to Him) λελάληκεν (has spoken).”

¹ Πρὸ (Before) δὲ (now) τῆς (the) ἑορτῆς (feast) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἦλθεν (had come) αὐτοῦ (His) ἡ (-) ὥρα (hour), ἵνα (that) μεταβῇ (He would depart) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), ἀγαπήσας (having loved) τοὺς (the) ἰδίους (own) τοὺς (who were) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), εἰς (to) τέλος (the end) ἠγάπησεν (He loved) αὐτούς (them). ² καὶ (And) δείπνου (supper) γινομένου (taking place), τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἤδη (already) βεβληκότος (having put) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἵνα (that) παραδοῖ (he should betray) αὐτὸν (Him) Ἰούδας (of Judas), Σίμωνος (son of Simon) Ἰσκαριώτου (Iscariot), ³ εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) πάντα (all things) ἔδωκεν (has given) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθεν (He came forth) καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ὑπάγει (He is going),

⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life). οὐδεὶς (No one) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (Me).

⁸ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Φίλιππος (Philip), “Κύριε (Lord), δεῖξον (show) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (and) ἀρκεῖ (it is enough) ἡμῖν (for us).” ⁹ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Τοσούτῳ* (So long) χρόνῳ* (a time) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (am I), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωκάς (you have known) με (Me), Φίλιππε (Philip)? ὁ (The one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) ἐμὲ (Me) ἑώρακεν (has seen) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); πῶς (how) σὺ (you) λέγεις (say), ‘Δεῖξον (Show) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father)?’

¹¹ πιστεύετέ (Believe) μοι (Me) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me); εἰ (if) δὲ (but) μή (not), διὰ (because of) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτὰ (themselves) πιστεύετε (believe).

²¹ ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) ἓν (one) ὦσιν (may be), καθὼς (as) σύ (You), πάτερ* (Father), ἐν (are in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) σοί (You), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (Us) ὦσιν (may be), ἵνα (that) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) πιστεύῃ (may believe) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent).

¹⁷ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μή (Not) μου (Me) ἅπτου (touch), οὔπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) ἀναβέβηκα (have I ascended) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); πορεύου (go) δὲ (however) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) εἰπὲ (say) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἀναβαίνω (I am ascending) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) Πατέρα (Father) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and to) Θεόν (God) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) Θεὸν (God) ὑμῶν (of you).’”

⁶ ἵνα (so that) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord), ἐν (with) ἑνὶ (one) στόματι (mouth), δοξάζητε (you may glorify) τὸν (the) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) Πατέρα (Father) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

³ Εὐλογητὸς (Blessed be) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) τῶν (-) οἰκτιρμῶν (of compassions), καὶ (and) Θεὸς (God) πάσης (of all) παρακλήσεως (comfort),

³¹ ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) οἶδεν (knows), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being) εὐλογητὸς (blessed) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages), ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) ψεύδομαι (I am lying).

³ Ἔσται (Will be) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) χάρις (grace), ἔλεος (mercy), εἰρήνη (and peace) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρός (the Father) καὶ (and) παρὰ (from) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father), ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) καὶ (and) ἀγάπῃ (love).

¹ Ἰούδας (Jude), Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) δοῦλος (servant), ἀδελφὸς (brother) δὲ (then) Ἰακώβου (of James), Τοῖς (To those) ἐν (in) Θεῷ (God) Πατρὶ (the Father) ἠγαπημένοις (having been loved) καὶ (and) Ἰησοῦ (in Jesus) Χριστῷ (Christ) τετηρημένοις (having been kept) κλητοῖς (called).

⁶ καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἔπεσαν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (were terrified) σφόδρα (greatly).

¹⁶ ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) ὁ (-) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐν (in) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), φῶς (a light) εἶδεν (have seen) μέγα (great), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) καθημένοις (sitting) ἐν (in the) χώρᾳ (land) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (shadow) θανάτου (of death), φῶς (a light) ἀνέτειλεν (has dawned) αὐτοῖς (on them).”

⁷⁸ διὰ (through) σπλάγχνα (the affections) ἐλέους (of compassion) Θεοῦ (of God) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) ἐπισκέψεται (will visit) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀνατολὴ (the Sunrise) ἐξ (from) ὕψους (on high), ⁷⁹ ἐπιφᾶναι (to shine upon) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (in the shadow) θανάτου (of death) καθημένοις (sitting); τοῦ (-) κατευθῦναι (to direct) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) ὁδὸν (the way) εἰρήνης (of peace).”

²⁹ Λέγει (Says) δὲ (however) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ‘Ἔχουσι (They have) Μωϋσέα (Moses) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets); ἀκουσάτωσαν (let them hear) αὐτῶν (them).’ ³⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Οὐχί (No), πάτερ (father) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐάν (if) τις (one) ἀπὸ (from) νεκρῶν (the dead) πορευθῇ (should go) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), μετανοήσουσιν (they will repent).’ ³¹ Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (however) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Εἰ (If) Μωϋσέως (Moses) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets) οὐκ (not) ἀκούουσιν (they hear), οὐδ’* (not even) ἐάν (if) τις (one) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἀναστῇ (should rise), πεισθήσονται (will they be persuaded).’”

⁷ οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (as) μαρτυρίαν (a witness), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light), ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) πιστεύσωσιν (might believe) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁸ οὐκ (Not) ἦν (was) ἐκεῖνος (He) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might witness) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light). ⁹ Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

³⁵ Ἐκεῖνος (He) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) λύχνος (lamp) ὁ (-) καιόμενος (burning) καὶ (and) φαίνων (shining); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) ἠθελήσατε (were willing) ἀγαλλιαθῆναι (to rejoice) πρὸς (for) ὥραν (a season) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) αὐτοῦ (of him).

³⁹ Ἐραυνᾶτε (You diligently search) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures), ὅτι (for) ὑμεῖς (you) δοκεῖτε (think) ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔχειν (to have); καὶ (and) ἐκεῖναί (these) εἰσιν (are they) αἱ (-) μαρτυροῦσαι (bearing witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me);

¹² Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world); ὁ (the one) ἀκολουθῶν (following) ἐμοὶ* (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) περιπατήσῃ (shall walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἕξει (will have) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).”

²⁹ ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) εἰδωλοθύτων (from things sacrificed to idols), καὶ (and) αἵματος (from blood), καὶ (and) πνικτῶν (from what is strangled), καὶ (and) πορνείας (from sexual immorality). ἐξ (From) ὧν (these) διατηροῦντες (keeping) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves), εὖ (well) πράξετε (you will do). Ἔρρωσθε (Farewell).”

¹¹ οὗτοι (These) δὲ (now) ἦσαν (were) εὐγενέστεροι (more noble) τῶν (than those) ἐν (in) Θεσσαλονίκῃ (Thessalonica), οἵτινες (who) ἐδέξαντο (received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) προθυμίας (readiness), τὸ (on the) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) ἀνακρίνοντες (examining) τὰς (the) γραφὰς (Scriptures) εἰ (if) ἔχοι (were) ταῦτα (these things) οὕτως (so).

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) κηρύσσομεν (do we proclaim), ἀλλὰ (but) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Κύριον (Lord); ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) δὲ (now), δούλους (servants) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (for the sake of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ⁶ ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) εἰπών (having said), “Ἐκ (Out of) σκότους (darkness) φῶς (light) λάμψει (shall shine),” ὃς (who) ἔλαμψεν (shone) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) πρὸς (for the) φωτισμὸν (radiance) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) προσώπῳ (the face) [Ἰησοῦ] (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁷ μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) γίνεσθε (be) συμμέτοχοι (partakers) αὐτῶν (with them). ⁸ Ἦτε (You were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness); νῦν (now) δὲ (however), φῶς (light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord); ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk)—

⁸ Εἰ (If) μέντοι (indeed) νόμον (the law) τελεῖτε (you keep) βασιλικὸν (royal), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) γραφήν (Scripture), “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself),” καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you are doing).

⁶ οἳ (who) ἐμαρτύρησάν (testified) σου (of your) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love) ἐνώπιον (before) ἐκκλησίας (the church), οὓς (whom) καλῶς (well) ποιήσεις (you will do), προπέμψας (having set forward) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁸ καὶ (And) δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸν (the) ἀστέρα (star) τὸν (-) πρωϊνόν (morning).

¹⁶ “Ἐγὼ (I), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἔπεμψα (have sent) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (angel) μου (of Me) μαρτυρῆσαι (to testify) ὑμῖν (to you) ταῦτα (these things) ἐπὶ (in) ταῖς (the) ἐκκλησίαις (churches). ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ῥίζα (root) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) γένος (offspring) Δαυίδ (of David), ὁ (the) ἀστὴρ (star) ὁ (-) λαμπρός (bright) ὁ (-) πρωϊνός (morning).”

⁶ τοῦτο (this) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) παλαιὸς (old) ἡμῶν (of us) ἄνθρωπος (self) συνεσταυρώθη (was crucified with Him), ἵνα (so that) καταργηθῇ (might be annulled) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τοῦ (that) μηκέτι (no longer) δουλεύειν (are enslaved) ἡμᾶς (we) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin).

⁶ Ἔχοντες (We are having) δὲ (however) χαρίσματα (gifts) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (-) δοθεῖσαν (having been given) ἡμῖν (to us) διάφορα (different): εἴτε (if) προφητείαν (prophecy), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἀναλογίαν (proportion) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith);

¹¹ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this), εἰδότες (knowing) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (that it is the) ὥρα (hour) ἤδη (already) ὑμᾶς (for you) ἐξ (out of) ὕπνου (sleep) ἐγερθῆναι (to awaken); νῦν (now) γὰρ (for) ἐγγύτερον (nearer) ἡμῶν (is of us) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation) ἢ (than) ὅτε (when first) ἐπιστεύσαμεν (we believed).

⁹ εἰδὼς (knowing) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) δικαίῳ (for a righteous one) νόμος (law) οὐ (not) κεῖται (is enacted), ἀνόμοις (for the lawless) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) ἀνυποτάκτοις (insubordinate), ἀσεβέσι (for the ungodly) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλοῖς (sinful), ἀνοσίοις (for the unholy) καὶ (and) βεβήλοις (profane), πατρολῴαις (for murderers of fathers) καὶ (and) μητρολῴαις (murderers of mothers), ἀνδροφόνοις (for slayers of man),

³ γινώσκοντες (knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) δοκίμιον (testing) ὑμῶν (of your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) κατεργάζεται (produces) ὑπομονήν (endurance).

³ τοῦτο (this) πρῶτον (first) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτων (the last) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐν (with) ἐμπαιγμονῇ (scoffing) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (-) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (evil desires) αὐτῶν (of them) πορευόμενοι (following)

³⁶ αὐτὸς (Himself) Δαυὶδ (David) εἶπεν (said) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy): ‘Εἶπεν (Said) Κύριος (the Lord) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) μου (of me), “Κάθου (Sit) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) μου (of Me), Ἕως (until) ἂν (-) θῶ (I place) τοὺς (of the) ἐχθρούς (enemies) σου (of You) Ὑποκάτω (as a footstool) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) σου (of You).”’

⁷⁰ καθὼς (as) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) διὰ (by) στόματος (the mouth) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (holy) ἀπ’ (of) αἰῶνος (old) προφητῶν (prophets) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

¹⁶ “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἔδει (it was necessary for) πληρωθῆναι (to have been fulfilled) τὴν (the) γραφὴν (Scripture) ἣν (which) προεῖπεν (spoke beforehand) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) διὰ (by) στόματος (the mouth) Δαυὶδ (of David) περὶ (concerning) Ἰούδα (Judas), τοῦ (the one) γενομένου (having become) ὁδηγοῦ (guide) τοῖς (to those) συλλαβοῦσιν (having arrested) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus);

¹⁸ ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Θεὸς (God) ἃ (what) προκατήγγειλεν (He foretold) διὰ (by) στόματος (the mouth) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets), παθεῖν (that should suffer) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐπλήρωσεν (He has fulfilled) οὕτως (thus).

²⁵ ἀσύμφωνοι (Discordant) δὲ (then) ὄντες (being) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἀπελύοντο (they began to leave), εἰπόντος (having spoken) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ῥῆμα (word) ἓν (one) ὅτι (-): “Καλῶς (Rightly) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) διὰ (by) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you),

¹⁵ καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) βρέφους (childhood) [τὰ] (the) ἱερὰ (sacred) γράμματα (writings) οἶδας (you have known), τὰ (-) δυνάμενά (being able) σε (you) σοφίσαι (to make wise) εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation), διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), τῆς (-) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ¹⁶ πᾶσα (Every) γραφὴ (Scripture is) θεόπνευστος (God-breathed) καὶ (and) ὠφέλιμος (profitable) πρὸς (for) διδασκαλίαν (instruction), πρὸς (for) ἐλεγμόν (conviction), πρὸς (for) ἐπανόρθωσιν (correction), πρὸς (and for) παιδείαν (training) τὴν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness), ¹⁷ ἵνα (so that) ἄρτιος (complete) ᾖ (may be) ὁ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἄνθρωπος (man), πρὸς (toward) πᾶν (every) ἔργον (work) ἀγαθὸν (good) ἐξηρτισμένος (having been fully equipped).

⁷ Διό (Therefore), καθὼς (just as) λέγει (says) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy): “Σήμερον (Today) ἐὰν (if) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀκούσητε (you should hear),

⁸ Τοῦτο (By this) δηλοῦντος (was signifying) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Ἁγίου (Holy) μήπω (that not yet) πεφανερῶσθαι (has been made manifest) τὴν (the) τῶν (into the) ἁγίων (holy places) ὁδὸν (way), ἔτι (still) τῆς (the) πρώτης (first) σκηνῆς (tabernacle) ἐχούσης (having) στάσιν (a standing),

¹⁵ Μαρτυρεῖ (Bears witness) δὲ (now) ἡμῖν (to us) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy); μετὰ (after) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) εἰρηκέναι (having said):

¹¹ ἐραυνῶντες (inquiring) εἰς (into) τίνα (what) ἢ (or) ποῖον (what manner of) καιρὸν (time) ἐδήλου (was signifying) τὸ (the) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), προμαρτυρόμενον (testifying beforehand) τὰ (-) εἰς (unto) Χριστὸν (Christ's) παθήματα (sufferings) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) μετὰ (after) ταῦτα (these) δόξας (glories),

¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἔπεσα (I fell) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of him) προσκυνῆσαι (to worship) αὐτῷ (him). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) μοι (to me), “Ὅρα (See that you) μή (not). σύνδουλός (A fellow servant) σού (with you) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) σου (of you), τῶν (-) ἐχόντων (holding) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) προσκύνησον (worship)! ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) μαρτυρία (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τῆς (-) προφητείας (of prophecy).”
