² καθὼς (as) παρέδοσαν (delivered them) ἡμῖν (to us) οἱ (those) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) αὐτόπται (eyewitnesses) καὶ (and) ὑπηρέται (servants) γενόμενοι (having been) τοῦ (of the) λόγου (word),

³⁹ ἴδετε (See) τὰς (the) χεῖράς (hands) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) μου (of Me), ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) αὐτός (He). ψηλαφήσατέ (Touch) με (Me) καὶ (and) ἴδετε (see), ὅτι (for) πνεῦμα (a spirit) σάρκα (flesh) καὶ (and) ὀστέα (bones) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), καθὼς (as) ἐμὲ (Me) θεωρεῖτε (you see) ἔχοντα (having).”

¹ Ἐν (In the) ἀρχῇ (beginning) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) ἦν (was) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καὶ (and) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word). ² Οὗτος (He) ἦν (was) ἐν (in the) ἀρχῇ (beginning) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ³ πάντα (All things) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being), καὶ (and) χωρὶς (without) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being) οὐδὲ (not even) ἕν (one thing) ὃ (that) γέγονεν (has come into being). ⁴ ἐν (In) αὐτῷ (Him) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men). ⁵ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) φαίνει (shines), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) αὐτὸ (it) οὐ (not) κατέλαβεν (overcame). ⁶ Ἐγένετο (There came) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀπεσταλμένος (having been sent) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God); ὄνομα (the name) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰωάννης (was John). ⁷ οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (as) μαρτυρίαν (a witness), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light), ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) πιστεύσωσιν (might believe) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁸ οὐκ (Not) ἦν (was) ἐκεῖνος (He) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might witness) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light). ⁹ Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world). ¹⁰ ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἦν (He was), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (knew). ¹¹ εἰς (To) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) ἦλθεν (He came), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἴδιοι (own) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐ (not) παρέλαβον (received). ¹² ὅσοι (As many as) δὲ (however) ἔλαβον (received) αὐτόν (Him), ἔδωκεν (He gave) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) γενέσθαι (to be), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ¹³ οἳ (who) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) αἱμάτων (blood), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (of) θελήματος (will) σαρκὸς (of flesh), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (of) θελήματος (will) ἀνδρὸς (of man), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκ (of) Θεοῦ (God) ἐγεννήθησαν (were born). ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐγένετο (became) καὶ (and) ἐσκήνωσεν (dwelt) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), καὶ (and) ἐθεασάμεθα (we beheld) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δόξαν (a glory) ὡς (as) μονογενοῦς (of an only begotten) παρὰ (from) Πατρός (the Father), πλήρης (full) χάριτος (of grace) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (truth). ¹⁵ Ἰωάννης (John) μαρτυρεῖ (witnesses) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) κέκραγεν (he cried out), λέγων (saying), “Οὗτος (This) ἦν (was He) ὃν (of whom) εἶπον (I was saying), ‘Ὁ (The One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).’” ¹⁶ Ὅτι (For) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πληρώματος (fullness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἐλάβομεν (have received) καὶ (then) χάριν (grace) ἀντὶ (for) χάριτος (grace). ¹⁷ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) διὰ (through) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐδόθη (was given); ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀλήθεια (truth) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐγένετο (came). ¹⁸ Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἑώρακεν (has seen) πώποτε (ever yet); μονογενὴς (the only begotten) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐξηγήσατο (has made Him known).

²⁶ ὥσπερ (As) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son) ἔδωκεν (He gave) ζωὴν (life), ἔχειν (to have) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself).

⁵⁸ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), πρὶν (before) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) γενέσθαι (was), ἐγὼ (I) εἰμί (am).”

³⁵ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness), καὶ (and) ἀληθινὴ (true) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony). καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνος (He) οἶδεν (knows) ὅτι (that) ἀληθῆ (truth) λέγει (he is speaking), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πιστεύητε (might believe).

²⁷ εἶτα (Then) λέγει (He says) τῷ (-) Θωμᾷ (to Thomas), “Φέρε (Bring) τὸν (the) δάκτυλόν (finger) σου (of you) ὧδε (here), καὶ (and) ἴδε (see) τὰς (the) χεῖράς (hands) μου (of Me); καὶ (and) φέρε (bring) τὴν (the) χεῖρά (hand) σου (of you), καὶ (and) βάλε (put it) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πλευράν (side) μου (of Me); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) γίνου (be) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἀλλὰ (but) πιστός (believing).”

³ οἷς (to whom) καὶ (also) παρέστησεν (He presented) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ζῶντα (alive) μετὰ (after) τὸ (the) παθεῖν (suffering) αὐτὸν (of Him) ἐν (with) πολλοῖς (many) τεκμηρίοις (proofs), δι’ (during) ἡμερῶν (days) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) ὀπτανόμενος (being seen) αὐτοῖς (by them) καὶ (and) λέγων (speaking) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁰ οὐ (not) δυνάμεθα (are able) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we), ἃ (what) εἴδαμεν (we have seen) καὶ (and) ἠκούσαμεν (heard), μὴ (not) λαλεῖν (to speak).”

¹⁶ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) σεσοφισμένοις (cleverly devised) μύθοις (fables) ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed out), ἐγνωρίσαμεν (we have made known) ὑμῖν (to you) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) δύναμιν (power) καὶ (and) παρουσίαν (coming), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπόπται (eyewitnesses) γενηθέντες (having been) τῆς (-) ἐκείνου (of His) μεγαλειότητος (majesty). ¹⁷ λαβὼν (Having received) γὰρ (for) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory), φωνῆς (a voice) ἐνεχθείσης (was brought) αὐτῷ (to Him), τοιᾶσδε (such as follows) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μεγαλοπρεποῦς (Majestic) δόξης (Glory): “Ὁ (The) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (-) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is), εἰς (in) ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εὐδόκησα (have found delight).” ¹⁸ καὶ (And) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) φωνὴν (voice) ἡμεῖς (we) ἠκούσαμεν (heard) ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἐνεχθεῖσαν (having been brought) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), ὄντες (being) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἁγίῳ (holy) ὄρει (mountain).

¹³ Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), πατέρες (fathers), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you have known) τὸν (Him who is) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning). Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), νεανίσκοι (young men), ὅτι (because) νενικήκατε (you have overcome) τὸν (the) πονηρόν (evil one). Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), παιδία (little children), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father). ¹⁴ Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), πατέρες (fathers), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you know) τὸν (Him who is) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning). Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), νεανίσκοι (young men), ὅτι (because) ἰσχυροί (strong) ἐστε (you are), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) νενικήκατε (you have overcome) τὸν (the) πονηρόν (evil one).

¹⁴ καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) τεθεάμεθα (have seen) καὶ (and) μαρτυροῦμεν (testify) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀπέσταλκεν (has sent) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son as) Σωτῆρα (Savior) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

⁷ ὅτι (For) τρεῖς (three) εἰσιν (there are) οἱ (-) μαρτυροῦντες (bearing testimony):

⁸ “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) Ἄλφα (Alpha) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Ὦ (Omega),” λέγει (says) Κύριος (Lord) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being), καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἐρχόμενος (is coming), ὁ (the) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty).

¹¹ λεγούσης (saying), “Ὃ (What) βλέπεις (you see), γράψον (write) εἰς (in) βιβλίον (a book), καὶ (and) πέμψον (send) ταῖς (to the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἐκκλησίαις (churches), εἰς (to) Ἔφεσον (Ephesus), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Σμύρναν (Smyrna), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Πέργαμον (Pergamum), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Θυάτειρα (Thyatira), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Σάρδεις (Sardis), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Φιλαδέλφειαν (Philadelphia), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Λαοδίκειαν (Laodicea).”

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) εἶδον (I saw) αὐτόν (Him), ἔπεσα (I fell) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡς (as though) νεκρός (dead). καὶ (And) ἔθηκεν (He placed) τὴν (the) δεξιὰν (right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμὲ (me), λέγων (saying), “Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear). ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) πρῶτος (First) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἔσχατος (Last), ¹⁸ καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Ζῶν (Living One); καὶ (and) ἐγενόμην (I was) νεκρὸς (dead), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold) ζῶν (living) εἰμι (I am) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), καὶ (and) ἔχω (I have) τὰς (the) κλεῖς (keys) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (Death) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of) ᾅδου (Hades).

⁸ Καὶ (And) τῷ (to the) ἀγγέλῳ (messenger) τῆς (of) ἐν (in) Σμύρνῃ (Smyrna) ἐκκλησίας (the church) γράψον (write): Τάδε (These things) λέγει (says) ὁ (the) πρῶτος (First) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἔσχατος (Last), ὃς (who) ἐγένετο (became) νεκρὸς (dead) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (came to life).

¹³ καὶ (and) περιβεβλημένος (having been clothed with) ἱμάτιον (a garment) βεβαμμένον (having been dipped) αἵματι (in blood). καὶ (And) κέκληται (is called) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ὁ (The) Λόγος (Word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁹ ἐγὼ (But I) οἶδα (know) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him) εἰμι (I am), κἀκεῖνός (and He) με (Me) ἀπέστειλεν (sent).”

²⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἀνάστασις (resurrection) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life); ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), κἂν (even if) ἀποθάνῃ (he should die), ζήσεται (he will live); ²⁶ καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living) καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (shall die), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). πιστεύεις (Believe you) τοῦτο (this)?”

⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life). οὐδεὶς (No one) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (Me).

²⁷ καὶ (Also) ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) μαρτυρεῖτε (bear witness), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστε (you are).

²⁸ ἐξῆλθον (I came forth) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) καὶ (and) ἐλήλυθα (have come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world); πάλιν (again) ἀφίημι (I leave) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) καὶ (and) πορεύομαι (go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father).”

³ αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (-) αἰώνιος (eternal) ζωὴ (life), ἵνα (that) γινώσκωσιν (they may know) σὲ (You), τὸν (the) μόνον (only) ἀληθινὸν (true) Θεὸν (God), καὶ (and) ὃν (whom) ἀπέστειλας (You have sent), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ).

⁵ καὶ (And) νῦν (now) δόξασόν (glorify) με (Me) σύ (You), Πάτερ (Father), παρὰ (with) σεαυτῷ (Yourself), τῇ (with the) δόξῃ (glory) ᾗ (that) εἶχον (I had) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) εἶναι (existed), παρὰ (with) σοί (You).

¹⁴ Τοῦτο (This is) ἤδη (now) τρίτον (the third time) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples), ἐγερθεὶς (having been raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).

²² ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) βαπτίσματος (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John) ἕως (until) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἧς (in which) ἀνελήμφθη (He was taken up) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us), μάρτυρα (a witness) τῆς (of the) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σὺν (with) ἡμῖν (us) γενέσθαι (to become) ἕνα (one) τούτων (of these).”

³² Τοῦτον (This) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀνέστησεν (has raised up) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), οὗ (whereof) πάντες (all) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) μάρτυρες (witnesses).

¹⁵ τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἀρχηγὸν (the Author) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) ἀπεκτείνατε (you killed), ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (has raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), οὗ (whereof) ἡμεῖς (we) μάρτυρές (witnesses) ἐσμεν (are).

³² καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) μάρτυρες (witnesses) τῶν (of the) ῥημάτων (things) τούτων (these), καὶ (and also) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), ὃ (whom) ἔδωκεν (has given) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τοῖς (to those) πειθαρχοῦσιν (obeying) αὐτῷ (Him).”

⁴¹ οὐ (not) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ἀλλὰ (but) μάρτυσιν (to the witnesses) τοῖς (-) προκεχειροτονημένοις (having been chosen beforehand) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἡμῖν (to us) οἵτινες (who) συνεφάγομεν (did eat with) καὶ (and) συνεπίομεν (drink with) αὐτῷ (Him) μετὰ (after) τὸ (-) ἀναστῆναι (rising) αὐτὸν (His) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).

¹ Ὃ (That which) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ὃ (that which) ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard), ὃ (that which) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes) ἡμῶν (of us), ὃ (that which) ἐθεασάμεθα (we have gazed upon) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) χεῖρες (hands) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐψηλάφησαν (have handled), περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Λόγου (Word) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) —

⁵ καὶ (And) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐφανερώθη (appeared) ἵνα (so that) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἄρῃ (He might take away); καὶ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).

⁸ ὁ (The one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστίν (is), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἁμαρτάνει (has been sinning). εἰς (For) τοῦτο (this reason) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) λύσῃ (He might destroy) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is).

²⁰ οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἥκει (is come), καὶ (and) δέδωκεν (has given) ἡμῖν (us) διάνοιαν (understanding), ἵνα (so that) γινώσκωμεν* (we may know) τὸν (Him who is) ἀληθινόν (true); καὶ (and) ἐσμὲν (we are) ἐν (in) τῷ (Him who is) ἀληθινῷ (true), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστῷ (Christ). οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἀληθινὸς (true) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) ζωὴ (life) αἰώνιος (eternal).

²⁰ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) γνώσεσθε (will know) ὑμεῖς (you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ²¹ ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τηρῶν (keeping) αὐτὰς (them), ἐκεῖνός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), ἀγαπηθήσεται (will be loved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me); κἀγὼ (and I) ἀγαπήσω (will love) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἐμφανίσω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰούδας (Judas), οὐχ (not) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), “Κύριε (Lord), καὶ (then) τί (what) γέγονεν (has occurred) ὅτι (that) ἡμῖν (to us) μέλλεις (You are about) ἐμφανίζειν (to manifest) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καὶ (and) οὐχὶ (not) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world)?” ²³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) με (Me), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσει (he will keep), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἐλευσόμεθα (we will come), καὶ (and) μονὴν (a home) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him) ποιησόμεθα (will make).

Πάτερ (Father) ἅγιε (Holy), τήρησον (keep) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You), ᾧ (which) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), ἵνα (that) ὦσιν (they may be) ἓν (one) καθὼς (as) ἡμεῖς (we are).

²⁵ Πάτερ* (Father) δίκαιε (righteous), καὶ (although) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) σε (You) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (has known), ἐγὼ (I) δέ (now) σε (You) ἔγνων (have known), καὶ (and) οὗτοι (these) ἔγνωσαν (have known) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent).

⁴² Ἦσαν (They were) δὲ (now) προσκαρτεροῦντες (steadfastly continuing) τῇ (in the) διδαχῇ (teaching) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles), καὶ (and) τῇ (-) κοινωνίᾳ (in fellowship), τῇ (the) κλάσει (breaking) τοῦ (of the) ἄρτου (bread), καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) προσευχαῖς (prayers).

³² Καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) ὑμᾶς (to you) εὐαγγελιζόμεθα (preach the gospel), τὴν (the) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) γενομένην (having been made),

⁴¹ ‘Ἴδετε (Behold), οἱ (-) καταφρονηταί (scoffers), καὶ (and) θαυμάσατε (wonder) καὶ (and) ἀφανίσθητε (perish); ὅτι (for) ἔργον (a work) ἐργάζομαι (am working) ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ὑμῶν (of you), ἔργον (a work) ὃ (that) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (you would believe), ἐάν (even if) τις (one) ἐκδιηγῆται (should declare it) ὑμῖν (to you).’”

²⁷ οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ὑπεστειλάμην (I shrunk back) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἀναγγεῖλαι (from declaring) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) βουλὴν (counsel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑμῖν (to you).

²⁷ εὐδόκησαν* (They were pleased) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ὀφειλέται (debtors) εἰσὶν (they are) αὐτῶν (of them). εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) τοῖς (the things) πνευματικοῖς (spiritual) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκοινώνησαν (have shared in) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), ὀφείλουσιν (they ought) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) σαρκικοῖς (material things) λειτουργῆσαι (to minister) αὐτοῖς (to them).

⁹ πιστὸς (Faithful is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) ἐκλήθητε (you were called) εἰς (into) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) τοῦ (with the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

² οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) πιστοὺς (believing) ἔχοντες (having) δεσπότας (masters), μὴ (not) καταφρονείτωσαν (let them despise them) ὅτι (because) ἀδελφοί (brothers) εἰσιν (they are); ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) δουλευέτωσαν (let them serve them), ὅτι (because) πιστοί (believing ones) εἰσιν (they are), καὶ (and) ἀγαπητοὶ (beloved), οἱ (-) τῆς (by the) εὐεργεσίας (good service) ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι (being helped). Ταῦτα (These things) δίδασκε (teach) καὶ (and) παρακάλει (exhort).

¹² λέγων (saying): “Ἀπαγγελῶ (I will declare) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) σου (of You) τοῖς (to the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) μου (of Me); ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) ἐκκλησίας (of the congregation) ὑμνήσω (I will sing praises) σε (of you).”

¹ Ὅθεν (Therefore), ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) ἅγιοι (holy), κλήσεως (of the calling) ἐπουρανίου (heavenly) μέτοχοι (partakers), κατανοήσατε (carefully consider) τὸν (the) Ἀπόστολον (apostle) καὶ (and) Ἀρχιερέα (high priest) τῆς (of the) ὁμολογίας (confession) ἡμῶν (of us), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus),

¹⁴ Μέτοχοι (Partakers) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) γεγόναμεν (we have become), ἐάνπερ (if indeed) τὴν (from the) ἀρχὴν (beginning) τῆς (the) ὑποστάσεως (assurance) μέχρι (unto) τέλους (the end) βεβαίαν (firm) κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) ἀναγγέλλομεν (we preach) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) φῶς (light) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) σκοτία (darkness) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) οὐδεμία (none).

⁷ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) περιπατῶμεν (we should walk) ὡς (as) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτί (light), κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχομεν (we have) μετ’ (with) ἀλλήλων (one another), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καθαρίζει (cleanses) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἁμαρτίας (sin).

²³ πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) ἀρνούμενος (denying) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), οὐδὲ (neither) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) ἔχει (has he). ὁ (The one) ὁμολογῶν (confessing) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), καὶ (also) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) ἔχει (has). ²⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You), ὃ (what) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μενέτω (let it abide). ἐὰν (If) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (should abide) ὃ (what) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) ἠκούσατε (you have heard), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father) μενεῖτε (will abide).

¹⁰ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (himself). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ψεύστην (a liar) πεποίηκεν (has made) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἣν (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has testified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is).

²⁹ Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) νύμφην (bride), νυμφίος (the bridegroom) ἐστίν (is); ὁ (the) δὲ (now) φίλος (friend) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom), ὁ (the one) ἑστηκὼς (standing) καὶ (and) ἀκούων (listening for) αὐτοῦ (him), χαρᾷ (with joy) χαίρει (rejoices) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom). αὕτη (This) οὖν (therefore), ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (of mine), πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled).

¹¹ Ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) ἡ (-) χαρὰ (joy) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ᾖ (may be), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ὑμῶν (of you) πληρωθῇ (may be full).

²⁴ ἕως (Until) ἄρτι (now) οὐκ (not) ᾐτήσατε (you have asked) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me). αἰτεῖτε (Ask) καὶ (and) λήμψεσθε (you will receive), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾖ (may be) πεπληρωμένη (full).

²⁴ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) κυριεύομεν (we lord it over) ὑμῶν (your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλὰ (but) συνεργοί (fellow workers) ἐσμεν (are) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) ὑμῶν (with you); τῇ (in the) γὰρ (for) πίστει (faith) ἑστήκατε (you stand firm).

¹⁹ γνῶναί (to know) τε (then) τὴν (the) ὑπερβάλλουσαν (surpassing) τῆς (-) γνώσεως (knowledge) ἀγάπην (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (so that) πληρωθῆτε (you may be filled) εἰς (unto) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁵ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) πεποιθὼς (having been persuaded of), οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) μενῶ (I will remain) καὶ (and) παραμενῶ (will continue with) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (of you) εἰς (for) τὴν (-) ὑμῶν (your) προκοπὴν (progress) καὶ (and) χαρὰν (joy) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith), ²⁶ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you) περισσεύῃ (may abound) ἐν (to) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἐμῆς (my) παρουσίας (coming) πάλιν (again) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹ Τεκνία (Little children) μου (of me), ταῦτα (these things) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἁμάρτητε (you might sin). καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ἁμάρτῃ (should sin), Παράκλητον (an advocate) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) δίκαιον (the Righteous One).

¹² Πολλὰ (Many things) ἔχων (having) ὑμῖν (to you) γράφειν (to write), οὐκ (not) ἐβουλήθην (I purposed) διὰ (with) χάρτου (paper) καὶ (and) μέλανος (ink); ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλπίζω (I hope) γενέσθαι (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) στόμα (mouth) πρὸς (to) στόμα (mouth) λαλῆσαι (to speak), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ἡμῶν (of us) πεπληρωμένη (having been completed) ᾖ (may be).

⁹ Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

¹² Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world); ὁ (the one) ἀκολουθῶν (following) ἐμοὶ* (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) περιπατήσῃ (shall walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἕξει (will have) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).”

⁵ ὅταν (While) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὦ (I shall be), φῶς (the light) εἰμι (I am) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).”

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going). ³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

²³ Ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) παρέλαβον (received) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ὃ (that which) καὶ (also) παρέδωκα (I delivered) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νυκτὶ (night) ᾗ (in which) παρεδίδετο (He was betrayed), ἔλαβεν (took) ἄρτον (bread),

¹⁶ ὁ (-) μόνος (alone) ἔχων (having) ἀθανασίαν (immortality), φῶς (in light) οἰκῶν (dwelling) ἀπρόσιτον (unapproachable), ὃν (whom) εἶδεν (has seen) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἀνθρώπων (of men) οὐδὲ (nor) ἰδεῖν (to see) δύναται (is able), ᾧ (to whom be) τιμὴ (honor) καὶ (and) κράτος (dominion) αἰώνιον (eternal). ἀμήν (Amen).

¹⁷ πᾶσα (Every) δόσις (act of giving) ἀγαθὴ (good), καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) δώρημα (gift) τέλειον (perfect), ἄνωθέν (from above) ἐστιν (is), καταβαῖνον (coming down) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) τῶν (-) φώτων (of lights), παρ’ (with) ᾧ (whom) οὐκ (not) ἔνι (there is) παραλλαγὴ (variation) ἢ (or) τροπῆς (of shifting) ἀποσκίασμα (shadow).

¹¹ Ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another),

²³ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) πόλις (city) οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has) τοῦ (of the) ἡλίου (sun), οὐδὲ (nor) τῆς (of the) σελήνης (moon), ἵνα (that) φαίνωσιν (they should shine) αὐτῇ (in it); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) δόξα (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐφώτισεν (enlightened) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λύχνος (lamp) αὐτῆς (of it) τὸ (is the) Ἀρνίον (Lamb).

⁵ καὶ (And) νὺξ (night) οὐκ (not) ἔσται (there will be) ἔτι (there), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) χρείαν (need) φωτὸς (of the light) λύχνου (of a lamp) καὶ (and) φωτὸς (of the light) ἡλίου (of the sun), ὅτι (because) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) φωτίσει (will enlighten) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (and) βασιλεύσουσιν (they will reign) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages).

²² πολλοὶ (Many) ἐροῦσίν (will say) μοι (to Me) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ‘Κύριε (Lord), Κύριε (Lord), οὐ (not) τῷ (in) σῷ (Your) ὀνόματι (name) ἐπροφητεύσαμεν (did we prophesy), καὶ (and) τῷ (in) σῷ (Your) ὀνόματι (name) δαιμόνια (demons) ἐξεβάλομεν (cast out), καὶ (and) τῷ (in) σῷ (your) ὀνόματι (name) δυνάμεις (miracles) πολλὰς (many) ἐποιήσαμεν (perform)?’

¹⁹ Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κρίσις (judgement), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) ἢ (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light); ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds). ²⁰ πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) φαῦλα (evil) πράσσων (practicing) μισεῖ (hates) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐλεγχθῇ (may be exposed) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him); ²¹ ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (that) φανερωθῇ (may be manifest) αὐτοῦ (his) τὰ (-) ἔργα (works) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) Θεῷ (God) ἐστιν (have been) εἰργασμένα (done).”

⁴⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστὲ (are), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τοῦ (of) πατρὸς (father) ὑμῶν (of you), θέλετε (you desire) ποιεῖν (to do). ἐκεῖνος (He) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (a murderer) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστηκεν (has stood), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ὅταν (Whenever) λαλῇ (he might speak) τὸ (-) ψεῦδος (falsehood), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) λαλεῖ (he speaks); ὅτι (for) ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστὶν (he is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of it). ⁴⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) ὅτι (because) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) λέγω (speak), οὐ (not) πιστεύετέ (you do believe) μοι (Me)!

¹⁰ ἐὰν (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (walks) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νυκτί (night), προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).”

¹⁴ Μὴ (Not) γίνεσθε (become) ἑτεροζυγοῦντες (unequally yoked together) ἀπίστοις (with unbelievers); τίς (what) γὰρ (for) μετοχὴ (partnership have) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἀνομίᾳ (lawlessness)? ἢ (Or) τίς (what) κοινωνία (fellowship) φωτὶ (light) πρὸς (with) σκότος (darkness)? ¹⁵ τίς (What) δὲ (now) συμφώνησις (harmony) Χριστοῦ (Christ) πρὸς (with) Βελιάρ (Belial)? ἢ (Or) τίς (what) μερὶς (part) πιστῷ (to a believer) μετὰ (with) ἀπίστου (an unbeliever)? ¹⁶ τίς (What) δὲ (now) συνκατάθεσις (agreement) ναῷ (the temple) Θεοῦ (of God) μετὰ (with) εἰδώλων (idols)? ἡμεῖς (We) γὰρ (for) ναὸς (the temple) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐσμεν (are), ζῶντος (the living), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὅτι (-): “Ἐνοικήσω (I will dwell) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) ἐμπεριπατήσω* (will walk among them); καὶ (and) ἔσομαι (I will be) αὐτῶν (their) Θεός (God), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔσονταί (will be) μου (to Me) λαός (a people).”

² ἐν (in) ὑποκρίσει (hypocrisy) ψευδολόγων (of speakers of lies), κεκαυστηριασμένων (having been seared) τὴν (in the) ἰδίαν (own) συνείδησιν (conscience),

¹⁴ Τί (What is) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), ἐὰν (if) πίστιν (faith) λέγῃ (says) τις (anyone) ἔχειν (to have), ἔργα (works) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχῃ (he has)? μὴ (Not) δύναται (is able) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σῶσαι (to save) αὐτόν (him)?

¹⁶ εἴπῃ (says) δέ (then) τις (anyone) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐξ (out from) ὑμῶν (you), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace); θερμαίνεσθε (be warmed) καὶ (and) χορτάζεσθε (be filled),” μὴ (not) δῶτε (gives) δὲ (however) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἐπιτήδεια (needful things) τοῦ (for the) σώματος (body), τί (what is) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit)?

¹⁸ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐρεῖ (will say) τις (someone), “Σὺ (You) πίστιν (faith) ἔχεις (have), κἀγὼ (and I) ἔργα (works) ἔχω (have).” δεῖξόν (Show) μοι (me) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) σου (of you) χωρὶς (without) τῶν (-) ἔργων (works), κἀγώ (and I) σοι (you) δείξω (will show) ἐκ (by) τῶν (the) ἔργων (works) μου (of me), τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith).

³ ὃ (that which) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) καὶ (and) ἀκηκόαμεν (have heard), ἀπαγγέλλομεν (we proclaim) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχητε (may have) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us). καὶ (Indeed) ἡ (the) κοινωνία (fellowship) δὲ (now) ἡ (-) ἡμετέρα (of us) μετὰ (is with) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁸ Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say) ὅτι (that) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἔχομεν (we have), ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πλανῶμεν (we deceive), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us).

¹⁰ ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say) ὅτι (that) οὐχ (not) ἡμαρτήκαμεν (we have sinned), ψεύστην (a liar) ποιοῦμεν (we make) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us).

⁴ ὁ (The one) λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἔγνωκα (I have known) αὐτόν (Him),” καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς (commandments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μὴ (not) τηρῶν (keeping), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (him) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is).

⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now). ¹⁰ ὁ (The one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) σκάνδαλον (cause for stumbling) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is). ¹¹ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) μισῶν (hating) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) περιπατεῖ (walks); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (does he know) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²⁰ Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) εἴπῃ (should say) ὅτι (-), “Ἀγαπῶ (I love) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),” καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῇ (should hate), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (whom) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), ὃν (whom) οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), οὐ (not) δύναται (is he able) ἀγαπᾶν (to love).

¹⁷ Ὅτι (For) λέγεις (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Πλούσιός (Rich) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) πεπλούτηκα (I have grown rich), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (of nothing) χρείαν (need) ἔχω (I have).’ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) οἶδας (do you realize) ὅτι (that) σὺ (you) εἶ (are) ὁ (-) ταλαίπωρος (wretched), καὶ (and) ἐλεεινὸς (miserable), καὶ (and) πτωχὸς (poor), καὶ (and) τυφλὸς (blind), καὶ (and) γυμνός (naked). ¹⁸ συμβουλεύω (I counsel) σοι (you) ἀγοράσαι (to buy) παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me) χρυσίον (gold) πεπυρωμένον (having been refined) ἐκ (by) πυρὸς (fire) ἵνα (so that) πλουτήσῃς (you may be rich), καὶ (and) ἱμάτια (garments) λευκὰ (white) ἵνα (so that) περιβάλῃ (you may be clothed) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φανερωθῇ (might be made manifest) ἡ (the) αἰσχύνη (shame) τῆς (of the) γυμνότητός (nakedness) σου (of you), καὶ (and) κολλούριον (eye-salve) ἐγχρῖσαι (to anoint) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes) σου (of you) ἵνα (so that) βλέπῃς (you may see).

²⁹ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

¹² ἡ (The) νὺξ (night) προέκοψεν (is nearly over), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). ἀποθώμεθα (We should cast off) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); ἐνδυσώμεθα (we should put on) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ὅπλα (armor) τοῦ (-) φωτός (of light).

¹¹ καὶ (And) ταῦτά (such) τινες (some of) ἦτε (you were); ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπελούσασθε (you were washed), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡγιάσθητε (you were sanctified), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐδικαιώθητε (you were justified), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἔχομεν (we have) τὴν (-) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὴν (the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (-) παραπτωμάτων (of trespasses), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

⁸ Ἦτε (You were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness); νῦν (now) δὲ (however), φῶς (light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord); ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk)—

¹⁴ πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὃς (who) διὰ (through) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) αἰωνίου (eternal), ἑαυτὸν (Himself) προσήνεγκεν (offered) ἄμωμον (unblemished) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), καθαριεῖ (will purify) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀπὸ (from) νεκρῶν (dead) ἔργων (works), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) λατρεύειν (to serve) Θεῷ (God) ζῶντι (the living)!

¹⁹ ἀλλὰ (but) τιμίῳ (by the precious) αἵματι (blood), ὡς (as) ἀμνοῦ (of a lamb) ἀμώμου (without blemish) καὶ (and) ἀσπίλου (without spot), Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹ Τεκνία (Little children) μου (of me), ταῦτα (these things) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἁμάρτητε (you might sin). καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ἁμάρτῃ (should sin), Παράκλητον (an advocate) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) δίκαιον (the Righteous One). ² καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἱλασμός (the propitiation) ἐστιν (is) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us); οὐ (not) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἡμετέρων (of ours) δὲ (and) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) περὶ (for) ὅλου (all) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world).

⁶ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ἐλθὼν (having come) δι’ (by) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) αἵματος (blood), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστός (Christ); οὐκ (not) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) ὕδατι (water) μόνον (only), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) ὕδατι (water) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) αἵματι (blood). καὶ (And) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the One) μαρτυροῦν (testifying), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth).

⁸ τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood)— καὶ (and) οἱ (these) τρεῖς (three) εἰς (in) τὸ (-) ἕν (one) εἰσιν (are).

⁴ Ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) λίαν (exceedingly) ὅτι (that) εὕρηκα (I have found) ἐκ (some of) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) σου (of you) περιπατοῦντας (walking) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἐλάβομεν (we received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father).

⁴ μειζοτέραν (Greater) τούτων (than these things) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have) χαράν (joy), ἵνα (that) ἀκούω (I should hear of) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (my) τέκνα (children) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) περιπατοῦντα (walking). ⁵ καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὁ (the) μάρτυς (witness) ὁ (-) πιστός (faithful), ὁ (the) πρωτότοκος (firstborn) τῶν (of the) νεκρῶν (dead) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (ruler) τῶν (of the) βασιλέων (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth). Τῷ (To the One) ἀγαπῶντι (loving) ἡμᾶς (us) καὶ (and) λύσαντι (releasing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐν (through) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him) —

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) εἴρηκα (I said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Κύριέ (Lord) μου (of me), σὺ (you) οἶδας (know).” Καὶ (And) εἶπέν (he said) μοι (to me), “Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) ἐρχόμενοι (coming) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) θλίψεως (tribulation) τῆς (-) μεγάλης (great), καὶ (and) ἔπλυναν (they have washed) τὰς (the) στολὰς (robes) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἐλεύκαναν (made white) αὐτὰς (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb).

¹¹ καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐνίκησαν (have overcome) αὐτὸν (him) διὰ (by reason) τὸ (of the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), καὶ (and) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) μαρτυρίας (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠγάπησαν (they have loved) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτῶν (of them) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death).

²³ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ἥμαρτον (have sinned) καὶ (and) ὑστεροῦνται (fall short) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹⁸ Μηδεὶς (No one) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ἐξαπατάτω (let deceive); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) δοκεῖ (thinks himself) σοφὸς (wise) εἶναι (to be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), μωρὸς (foolish) γενέσθω (let him become), ἵνα (so that) γένηται (he may become) σοφός (wise).

³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) δοκεῖ (thinks himself) τις (anyone) εἶναί (to be) τι (something), μηδὲν (nothing) ὤν (being), φρεναπατᾷ (he deceives) ἑαυτόν (himself).

⁵ διαπαρατριβαὶ (and constant frictions) διεφθαρμένων (corrupted) ἀνθρώπων (among men) τὸν (-) νοῦν (in mind), καὶ (and) ἀπεστερημένων (destitute) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth), νομιζόντων (holding) πορισμὸν (a means of gain) εἶναι (to be) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness).

¹³ πονηροὶ (Evil) δὲ (however) ἄνθρωποι (men) καὶ (and) γόητες (imposters) προκόψουσιν (will advance) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (-) χεῖρον (worse), πλανῶντες (deceiving) καὶ (and) πλανώμενοι (being deceived).

²² Γίνεσθε (Be) δὲ (however) ποιηταὶ (doers) λόγου (of the word), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἀκροαταὶ (hearers) μόνον (only), παραλογιζόμενοι (deceiving) ἑαυτούς (yourselves),

²⁶ Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) δοκεῖ (seems) θρησκὸς (religious) εἶναι (to be), μὴ (not) χαλιναγωγῶν (bridling) γλῶσσαν (the tongue) αὐτοῦ* (of himself), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπατῶν (deceiving) καρδίαν (the heart) αὐτοῦ* (of himself), τούτου (of this one) μάταιος (worthless is) ἡ (the) θρησκεία (religion).

² πολλὰ (In many ways) γὰρ (for) πταίομεν (we stumble) ἅπαντες (all). εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (what he says) οὐ (not) πταίει (does stumble), οὗτος (this one is) τέλειος (a perfect) ἀνήρ (man), δυνατὸς (able) χαλιναγωγῆσαι (to bridle) καὶ (indeed) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body).

¹³ ἀδικούμενοι (suffering wrong) μισθὸν (as the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness); ἡδονὴν (as pleasure) ἡγούμενοι (esteeming) τὴν (-) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime) τρυφήν (carousal); σπίλοι (blots) καὶ (and) μῶμοι (blemishes), ἐντρυφῶντες (reveling) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀπάταις (deceptions) αὐτῶν (of them), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting with) ὑμῖν (you);

⁶ Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say) ὅτι (that) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχομεν (we have) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and yet) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σκότει (darkness) περιπατῶμεν (should walk), ψευδόμεθα (we lie) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) ποιοῦμεν (do practice) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth).

⁵ καὶ (And) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐφανερώθη (appeared) ἵνα (so that) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἄρῃ (He might take away); καὶ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is). ⁶ πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένων (abiding), οὐχ (not) ἁμαρτάνει (sins); πᾶς (anyone) ὁ (-) ἁμαρτάνων (sinning), οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (has seen) αὐτὸν (Him), οὐδὲ (nor) ἔγνωκεν (has he known) αὐτόν (Him).

² διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) τὴν (-) μένουσαν (abiding) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) καὶ (and) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) ἔσται (that will be) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age): ³ ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) γὰρ (for) λίαν (exceedingly) ἐρχομένων (coming) ἀδελφῶν (of the brothers) καὶ (and) μαρτυρούντων (bearing witness) σου (of your) τῇ (-) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) σὺ (you) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) περιπατεῖς (are walking).

⁶ καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἰορδάνῃ (Jordan) ποταμῷ (River) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).

⁵ καὶ (And) ἐξεπορεύετο (were going out) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) Ἰουδαία (of Judea) χώρα (region) καὶ (and) οἱ (-) Ἱεροσολυμῖται (of Jerusalem), πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἰορδάνῃ (Jordan) ποταμῷ (river), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁸ πολλοί (Many) τε (then) τῶν (of those) πεπιστευκότων (having believed) ἤρχοντο (were coming), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) καὶ (and) ἀναγγέλλοντες (declaring) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them).

²⁶ ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀνοχῇ (forbearance) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); πρὸς (for) τὴν (of) ἔνδειξιν (the showing forth) τῆς (the) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) καιρῷ (time), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) δίκαιον (just) καὶ (and) δικαιοῦντα (justifying) τὸν (the one) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

²⁶ ἵνα (so that) αὐτὴν (her) ἁγιάσῃ (He might sanctify), καθαρίσας (having cleansed her) τῷ (by the) λουτρῷ (washing) τοῦ (-) ὕδατος (of water) ἐν (by) ῥήματι (the word),

¹⁵ Πιστὸς (Trustworthy is) ὁ (the) λόγος (saying) καὶ (and) πάσης (of full) ἀποδοχῆς (acceptance) ἄξιος (worthy), ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἁμαρτωλοὺς (sinners) σῶσαι (to save), ὧν (of whom) πρῶτός (the foremost) εἰμι (am) ἐγώ (I).

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

¹⁰ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἄδικος (unjust is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἐπιλαθέσθαι (to forget) τοῦ (the) ἔργου (work) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) ἧς (that) ἐνεδείξασθε (you have shown) εἰς (toward) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διακονήσαντες (having ministered) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) καὶ (and) διακονοῦντες (still ministering).

²³ Κατέχωμεν (We should hold fast) τὴν (to the) ὁμολογίαν (confession) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), ἀκλινῆ (firmly); πιστὸς (faithful) γὰρ (for is) ὁ (the One) ἐπαγγειλάμενος (having promised).

¹¹ Πίστει (By faith) καὶ (also), αὐτῇ (herself) Σάρρᾳ (Sarah) [στεῖρα] (barren), δύναμιν (power) εἰς (for) καταβολὴν (the conception) σπέρματος (of seed) ἔλαβεν (received), καὶ (even) παρὰ (beyond) καιρὸν (the opportune) ἡλικίας (age), ἐπεὶ (since) πιστὸν (faithful) ἡγήσατο (she considered) τὸν (the One) ἐπαγγειλάμενον (having promised).

³ καὶ (And) ᾄδουσιν (they are singing) τὴν (the) ᾠδὴν (song) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), τοῦ (the) δούλου (servant) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ᾠδὴν (song) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), λέγοντες (saying): “Μεγάλα (Great) καὶ (and) θαυμαστὰ (wonderful are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) σου (of You), Κύριε (Lord) ὁ (-) Θεός (God) ὁ (the) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty)! δίκαιαι (Righteous) καὶ (and) ἀληθιναὶ (true are) αἱ (the) ὁδοί (ways) σου (of You), ὁ (O) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (nations)!

¹⁶ Ὁ (The) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐνοικείτω (let dwell) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) πλουσίως (richly), ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) διδάσκοντες (teaching) καὶ (and) νουθετοῦντες (admonishing) ἑαυτοὺς (each other) ψαλμοῖς (in psalms), ὕμνοις (hymns), ᾠδαῖς (and songs) πνευματικαῖς (spiritual), ἐν (with) τῇ (-) χάριτι (grace) ᾄδοντες (singing), ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God).

¹⁴ Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), πατέρες (fathers), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you know) τὸν (Him who is) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning). Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), νεανίσκοι (young men), ὅτι (because) ἰσχυροί (strong) ἐστε (you are), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) νενικήκατε (you have overcome) τὸν (the) πονηρόν (evil one).

⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστε (are), τεκνία (little children), καὶ (and) νενικήκατε (have overcome) αὐτούς (them), ὅτι (because) μείζων (greater) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the One) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἢ (than) ὁ (the one) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world).

¹⁰ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (himself). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ψεύστην (a liar) πεποίηκεν (has made) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἣν (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has testified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (Him).
