²⁴ Then the Jews came round him, and said to him: How long do you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

³ and said to him: Art thou he that was to come, or must we look for another?

¹⁵ While the people were in suspense, and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not,

⁶⁷ If you are the Christ, tell us. But he said to them: If I tell you, you will not believe; ⁶⁸ and if I also ask you a question, you will not answer me, nor let me go. ⁶⁹ Henceforth the Son of man shall sit on the right hand of the power of God. ⁷⁰ And they all said: You are, then, the Son of God? He said to them: You say that I am.

¹⁹ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who are you?

²⁵ Then they said to him: Who are you? And Jesus said to them: The same that I said to you at the beginning.

⁵³ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead; whom do you make yourself?

²² His parents said this, because they feared the Jews. For the Jews had already agreed, that if any one should confess him to be the Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

²⁵ These things I have spoken to you in parables; the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in parables, but will teach you plainly concerning the Father.
