Psalms 35 Cross References - ASV

1 [A Psalm] of David.

Strive thou, O Jehovah, with them that strive with me:
Fight thou against them that fight against me. 2 Take hold of shield and buckler,
And stand up for my help. 3 Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that pursue me:
Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation. 4 Let them be put to shame and brought to dishonor that seek after my soul:
Let them be turned back and confounded that devise my hurt.
5 Let them be as chaff before the wind,
And the angel of Jehovah driving [them] on. 6 Let their way be dark and slippery,
And the angel of Jehovah pursuing them. 7 For without cause have they hid for me their net [in] a pit;
Without cause have they digged [a pit] for my soul. 8 Let destruction come upon him unawares;
And let his net that he hath hid catch himself:
With destruction let him fall therein. 9 And my soul shall be joyful in Jehovah:
It shall rejoice in his salvation. 10 All my bones shall say,
Jehovah, who is like unto thee,
Who deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him,
Yea, the poor and the needy from him that robbeth him? 11 Unrighteous witnesses rise up;
They ask me of things that I know not. 12 They reward me evil for good,
[To] the bereaving of my soul. 13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth:
I afflicted my soul with fasting;
And my prayer returned into mine own bosom. 14 I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother:
I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother. 15 But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together:
The abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew [it] not;
They did tear me, and ceased not: 16 Like the profane mockers in feasts,
They gnashed upon me with their teeth. 17 Lord, how long wilt thou look on?
Rescue my soul from their destructions,
My darling from the lions. 18 I will give thee thanks in the great assembly:
I will praise thee among much people. 19 Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me;
Neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause. 20 For they speak not peace;
But they devise deceitful words against them that are quiet in the land. 21 Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me;
They said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it. 22 Thou hast seen it, O Jehovah; keep not silence:
O Lord, be not far from me. 23 Stir up thyself, and awake to the justice [due] unto me,
[Even] unto my cause, my God and my Lord. 24 Judge me, O Jehovah my God, according to thy righteousness;
And let them not rejoice over me. 25 Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it:
Let them not say, We have swallowed him up. 26 Let them be put to shame and confounded together that rejoice at my hurt:
Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor that magnify themselves against me. 27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favor my righteous cause:
Yea, let them say continually, Jehovah be magnified,
Who hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. 28 And my tongue shall talk of thy righteousness
[And] of thy praise all the day long.

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son 18 (and he bade them teach the children of Judah [the song of] the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar): 19 Thy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places!
How are the mighty fallen! 20 Tell it not in Gath,
Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21 Ye mountains of Gilboa,
Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings:
For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away,
The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,
The bow of Jonathan turned not back,
And the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives,
And in their death they were not divided:
They were swifter than eagles,
They were stronger than lions. 24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet delicately,
Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel. 25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan is slain upon thy high places. 26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:
Very pleasant hast thou been unto me:

They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation. 4 They pluck salt-wort by the bushes;
And the roots of the broom are their food. 5 They are driven forth from the midst [of men];
They cry after them as after a thief; 6 So that they dwell in frightful valleys,
In holes of the earth and of the rocks. 7 Among the bushes they bray;
Under the nettles they are gathered together. 8 [They are] children of fools, yea, children of base men;
They were scouraged out of the land.
9 And now I am become their song,
Yea, I am a byword unto them. 10 They abhor me, they stand aloof from me,
And spare not to spit in my face. 11 For he hath loosed his cord, and afflicted me;
And they have cast off the bridle before me. 12 Upon my right hand rise the rabble;

He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. 43 He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach.

1 Samuel 20:24-42

24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat food. 25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon the seat by the wall; and Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat by Saul's side: but David's place was empty. 26 Nevertheless Saul spake not anything that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean. 27 And it came to pass on the morrow after the new moon, [which was] the second [day], that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to-day? 28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beth-lehem: 29 and he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me [to be there]: and now, if I have found favor in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he is not come unto the king's table.
30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother's nakedness? 31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. 32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore should he be put to death? what hath he done? 33 And Saul cast his spear at him to smite him; whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to put David to death. 34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him. 36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee? 38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master. 39 But the lad knew not anything: only Jonathan and David knew the matter. 40 And Jonathan gave his weapons unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city. 41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of [a place] toward the South, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of Jehovah, saying, Jehovah shall be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed, for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
