¹ The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.
² What, my son? and what, O son of my womb?
And what, O son of my vows? ³ Give not thy strength unto women,
Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. ⁴ It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine;
Nor for princes [to say], Where is strong drink? ⁵ Lest they drink, and forget the law,
And pervert the justice [due] to any that is afflicted. ⁶ Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish,
And wine unto the bitter in soul: ⁷ Let him drink, and forget his poverty,
And remember his misery no more. ⁸ Open thy mouth for the dumb,
In the cause of all such as are left desolate. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously,
And minister justice to the poor and needy.
¹⁰ A worthy woman who can find?
For her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband trusteth in her,
And he shall have no lack of gain. ¹² She doeth him good and not evil
All the days of her life. ¹³ She seeketh wool and flax,
And worketh willingly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchant-ships;
She bringeth her bread from afar. ¹⁵ She riseth also while it is yet night,
And giveth food to her household,
And their task to her maidens. ¹⁶ She considereth a field, and buyeth it;
With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. ¹⁷ She girdeth her loins with strength,
And maketh strong her arms. ¹⁸ She perceiveth that her merchandise is profitable;
Her lamp goeth not out by night. ¹⁹ She layeth her hands to the distaff,
And her hands hold the spindle. ²⁰ She stretcheth out her hand to the poor;
Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household;
For all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She maketh for herself carpets of tapestry;
Her clothing is fine linen and purple. ²³ Her husband is known in the gates,
When he sitteth among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She maketh linen garments and selleth them,
And delivereth girdles unto the merchant. ²⁵ Strength and dignity are her clothing;
And she laugheth at the time to come. ²⁶ She openeth her mouth with wisdom;
And the law of kindness is on her tongue. ²⁷ She looketh well to the ways of her household,
And eateth not the bread of idleness. ²⁸ Her children rise up, and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praiseth her, saying: ²⁹ Many daughters have done worthily,
But thou excellest them all. ³⁰ Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain;
[But] a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised. ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands;
And let her works praise her in the gates.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father,
And forsake not the law of thy mother:

²⁰ My son, keep the commandment of thy father,
And forsake not the law of thy mother:

The man saith unto Ithiel, unto Ithiel and Ucal:

⁵ having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also.

¹⁵ and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹¹ And she vowed a vow, and said, O Jehovah of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give unto thy handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto Jehovah all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

²⁸ therefore also I have granted him to Jehovah; as long as he liveth he is granted to Jehovah. And he worshipped Jehovah there.

¹⁵ Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee.

¹⁷ Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

¹ Now king Solomon loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites;

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.

⁹ Lest thou give thine honor unto others,
And thy years unto the cruel; ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength,
And thy labors [be] in the house of an alien, ¹¹ And thou mourn at thy latter end,
When thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded:
Yea, all her slain are a mighty host. ²⁷ Her house is the way to Sheol,
Going down to the chambers of death.

¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding.

⁹ Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: ¹⁰ and that ye may make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean;

¹² And it came to pass, when [Ben-hadad] heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set [yourselves in array]. And they set [themselves in array] against the city.

¹⁶ And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him. ¹⁷ And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out from Samaria. ¹⁸ And he said, Whether they are come out for peace, take them alive, or whether they are come out for war, taken them alive. ¹⁹ So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them. ²⁰ And they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.

¹⁵ The posts went forth in haste by the king's commandment, and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city of Shushan was perplexed.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler;
And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.

¹⁷ Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

²² Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink;

⁷ And even these reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they stagger with strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. ⁸ For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean].

² Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink therefrom. ³ Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them. ⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding. ¹² My people ask counsel at their stock, and their staff declareth unto them; for the spirit of whoredom hath caused them to err, and they have played the harlot, [departing] from under their God.

³ They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. ⁴ They are all adulterers; they are as an oven heated by the baker; he ceaseth to stir [the fire], from the kneading of the dough, until it be leavened. ⁵ On the day of our king the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with scoffers.

⁵ Yea, moreover, wine is treacherous, a haughty man, that keepeth not at home; who enlargeth his desire as Sheol, and he is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all peoples.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee; ²² and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and them that sat at meat with him; and the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. ²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. ²⁴ And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer. ²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist. ²⁶ And the king was exceeding sorry; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat, he would not reject her. ²⁷ And straightway the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring his head: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸ and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother.

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto Jehovah, and wept sore.

⁶ And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David strengthened himself in Jehovah his God.

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery,
And life unto the bitter in soul;

¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me;
And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹⁵ And wine that maketh glad the heart of man,
[And] oil to make his face to shine,
And bread that strengtheneth man's heart.

²³ Be no longer a drinker of water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

¹⁸ And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit;

⁴ And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: ⁵ for he put his life in his hand, and smote the Philistine, and Jehovah wrought a great victory for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice; wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause? ⁶ And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As Jehovah liveth, he shall not be put to death. ⁷ And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as beforetime.

³² And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore should he be put to death? what hath he done?

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who among all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and is taken into thy council, and is honorable in thy house? ¹⁵ Have I to-day begun to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute anything unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more.

¹³ Then Mordecai bade them return answer unto Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews. ¹⁴ For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then will relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father's house will perish: and who knoweth whether thou art not come to the kingdom for such a time as this? ¹⁵ Then Esther bade them return answer unto Mordecai, ¹⁶ Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast in like manner; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

⁹ The princes refrained from talking,
And laid their hand on their mouth;

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried,
The fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me;
And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
My justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind,
And feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy:
And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

¹¹ Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee:
According to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to death;

³ Judge the poor and fatherless:
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. ⁴ Rescue the poor and needy:
Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁷ Wisdom is too high for a fool:
He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

¹¹ Deliver them that are carried away unto death,
And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back. ¹² If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this;
Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it?
And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it?
And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

¹⁶ Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets: This man is not worthy of death; for he hath spoken to us in the name of Jehovah our God. ¹⁷ Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spake to all the assembly of the people, saying, ¹⁸ Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest. ¹⁹ Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? did he not fear Jehovah, and entreat the favor of Jehovah, and Jehovah repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus should we commit great evil against our own souls.

²⁴ But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

⁷ Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin), ⁸ Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying, ⁹ My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city. ¹⁰ Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

⁵¹ Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?

¹⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.

¹⁶ And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear [the causes] between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the sojourner that is with him.

¹⁸ Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, according to thy tribes; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. ¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest justice: thou shalt not respect persons; neither shalt thou take a bribe; for a bribe doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous. ²⁰ That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

¹⁵ And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed justice and righteousness unto all his people.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried,
The fatherless also, that had none to help him.

¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind,
And feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy:
And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

Do ye indeed in silence speak righteousness?
Do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men? ² Nay, in heart ye work wickedness;
Ye weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth.

¹ [A Psalm] of Solomon.

Give the king thy judgments, O God,
And thy righteousness unto the king's son. ² He will judge thy people with righteousness,
And thy poor with justice.

¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness;
For the throne is established by righteousness.

⁸ A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment
Scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

¹⁷ learn to do well; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

²³ Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; every one loveth bribes, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

⁴ but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

¹ Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in justice. ² And a man shall be as a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest, as streams of water in a dry place, as the shade of a great rock in a weary land.

²⁸ They are waxed fat, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

³ Thus saith Jehovah: Execute ye justice and righteousness, and deliver him that is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence, to the sojourner, the fatherless, nor the widow; neither shed innocent blood in this place.

¹⁵ Shalt thou reign, because thou strivest to excel in cedar? Did not thy father eat and drink, and do justice and righteousness? then it was well with him. ¹⁶ He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Was not this to know me? saith Jehovah.

⁵ Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

²⁷ Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as ye trample upon the poor, and take exactions from him of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink the wine thereof. ¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins—ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right].

⁹ Thus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother;

⁹ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass.

²⁴ Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.}

⁹ Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity;
Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee
With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

¹¹ And I saw the heaven opened; and behold, a white horse, and he that sat thereon called Faithful and True; and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

¹¹ And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a worthy woman.

¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal:
Yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies.

¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies:
And none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her.

¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies;
And all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto it.

⁴ A worthy woman is the crown of her husband;
But she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

²² Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing,
And obtaineth favor of Jehovah.

¹⁴ House and riches are an inheritance from fathers;
But a prudent wife is from Jehovah.

¹⁵ There is gold, and abundance of rubies;
But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

²⁸ which my soul still seeketh, but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

⁸ There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines,
And virgins without number. ⁹ My dove, my undefiled, is [but] one;
She is the only one of her mother;
She is the choice one of her that bare her.
The daughters saw her, and called her blessed;
[Yea], the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.

²⁵ Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; ²⁶ that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, ²⁷ that he might present the church to himself a glorious [church], not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. ²⁸ Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself: ²⁹ for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church; ³⁰ because we are members of his body. ³¹ For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. ³² This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church. ³³ Nevertheless do ye also severally love each one his own wife even as himself; and [let] the wife [see] that she fear her husband.

⁹ And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passeth by us continually. ¹⁰ Let us make, I pray thee, a little chamber on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a seat, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

²² And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the servants, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. ²³ And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to-day? it is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.

¹ In like manner, ye wives, [be] in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behavior of their wives; ² beholding your chaste behavior [coupled] with fear. ³ Whose [adorning] let it not be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel; ⁴ but [let it be] the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible [apparel] of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. ⁵ For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: ⁶ as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.
⁷ Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with [your wives] according to knowledge, giving honor unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered.

¹⁸ Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched grain, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. ¹⁹ And she said unto her young men, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal. ²⁰ And it was so, as she rode on her ass, and came down by the covert of the mountain, that, behold, David and his men came down toward her; and she met them. ²¹ Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath returned me evil for good. ²² God do so unto the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light so much as one man-child.

²⁶ Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

⁶ And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes. ⁷ And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto the servant; and he hasted to dress it. ⁸ And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

¹³ Behold, I am standing by the fountain of water; and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water: ¹⁴ and let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast showed kindness unto my master.

¹⁸ And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. ¹⁹ And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. ²⁰ And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.

⁹ While he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she kept them. ¹⁰ And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

² And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. ³ And she went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on the portion of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

²³ So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz, to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and she dwelt with her mother-in-law.

¹⁶ Moreover Jehovah said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet; ¹⁷ therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and Jehovah will lay bare their secret parts. ¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, and the cauls, and the crescents; ¹⁹ the pendants, and the bracelets, and the mufflers; ²⁰ the headtires, and the ankle chains, and the sashes, and the perfume-boxes, and the amulets; ²¹ the rings, and the nose-jewels; ²² the festival robes, and the mantles, and the shawls, and the satchels; ²³ the hand-mirrors, and the fine linen, and the turbans, and the veils. ²⁴ And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet spices there shall be rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well set hair, baldness; and instead of a robe, a girding of sackcloth; branding instead of beauty.

⁹ Rise up, ye women that are at ease, [and] hear my voice; ye careless daughters, give ear unto my speech. ¹⁰ For days beyond a year shall ye be troubled, ye careless women; for the vintage shall fail, the ingathering shall not come. ¹¹ Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones; strip you, and make you bare, and gird [sackcloth] upon your loins.

³⁹ And Peter arose and went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. ⁴⁰ But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down and prayed; and turning to the body, he said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes; and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

¹¹ and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you;

¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat. ¹¹ For we hear of some that walk among you disorderly, that work not at all, but are busybodies. ¹² Now them that are such we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

¹⁰ well reported of for good works; if she hath brought up children, if she hath used hospitality to strangers, if she hath washed the saints' feet, if she hath relieved the afflicted, if she hath diligently followed every good work.

¹⁴ I desire therefore that the younger [widows] marry, bear children, rule the household, give no occasion to the adversary for reviling:

⁵ [to be] sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed:

²⁶ And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. ²⁷ And Hiram sent in the navy his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon. ²⁸ And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

¹⁰ And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon, that brought gold from Ophir, brought algum-trees and precious stones.

²⁴ She maketh linen garments and selleth them,
And delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

³ and say unto Tyre, O thou that dwellest at the entry of the sea, that art the merchant of the peoples unto many isles, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Thou, O Tyre, hast said, I am perfect in beauty. ⁴ Thy borders are in the heart of the seas; thy builders have perfected thy beauty. ⁵ They have made all thy planks of fir-trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for thee. ⁶ Of the oaks of Bashan have they made thine oars; they have made thy benches of ivory inlaid in boxwood, from the isles of Kittim. ⁷ Of fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was thy sail, that it might be to thee for an ensign; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was thine awning. ⁸ The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were thy rowers: thy wise men, O Tyre, were in thee, they were thy pilots. ⁹ The old men of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to deal in thy merchandise. ¹⁰ Persia and Lud and Put were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness. ¹¹ The men of Arvad with thine army were upon thy walls round about, and valorous men were in thy towers; they hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have perfected thy beauty.
¹² Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded for thy wares. ¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy traffickers; they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass for thy merchandise. ¹⁴ They of the house of Togarmah traded for thy wares with horses and war-horses and mules. ¹⁵ The men of Dedan were thy traffickers; many isles were the mart of thy hand: they brought thee in exchange horns of ivory and ebony. ¹⁶ Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of thy handiworks: they traded for thy wares with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies. ¹⁷ Judah, and the land of Israel, they were thy traffickers: they traded for thy merchandise wheat of Minnith, and pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. ¹⁸ Damascus was thy merchant for the multitude of thy handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool. ¹⁹ Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for thy wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among thy merchandise. ²⁰ Dedan was thy trafficker in precious cloths for riding. ²¹ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of thy hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they thy merchants. ²² The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy traffickers; they traded for thy wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur [and] Chilmad, were thy traffickers. ²⁴ These were thy traffickers in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. ²⁵ The ships of Tarshish were thy caravans for thy merchandise: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.
²⁶ Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the heart of the seas. ²⁷ Thy riches, and thy wares, thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the dealers in thy merchandise, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, with all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of thy ruin. ²⁸ At the sound of the cry of thy pilots the suburbs shall shake. ²⁹ And all that handled the oar, the mariners, [and] all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land, ³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard over thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: ³¹ and they shall make themselves bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee in bitterness of soul with bitter mourning. ³² And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, [saying], Who is there like Tyre, like her that is brought to silence in the midst of the sea? ³³ When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many peoples; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy merchandise. ³⁴ In the time that thou wast broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, thy merchandise and all thy company did fall in the midst of thee. ³⁵ All the inhabitants of the isles are astonished at thee, and their kings are horribly afraid; they are troubled in their countenance. ³⁶ The merchants among the peoples hiss at thee; thou art become a terror, and thou shalt nevermore have any being.

¹ And Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel; and they lodged there before they passed over.

¹⁵ And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling-place:

¹⁴⁷ I anticipated the dawning of the morning, and cried:
I hoped in thy words. ¹⁴⁸ Mine eyes anticipated the night-watches,
That I might meditate on thy word.

¹³ Love not sleep, let thou come to poverty;
Open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

¹⁰ Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.

²⁵ Behold, I have told you beforehand.

³⁵ And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose up and went out, and departed into a desert place, and there prayed.

⁴² And the Lord said, { Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

¹¹ in diligence not slothful; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

¹⁸ And it came to pass, when she came [unto him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said, What wouldest thou?

¹² My vineyard, which is mine, is before me:
Thou, O Solomon, shalt have the thousand,
And those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.

⁴⁴ The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found, and hid; and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

²⁴ But his bow abode in strength,
And the arms of his hands were made strong,
By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob
(From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel),

⁴⁶ and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

²⁹ Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

³ Gird up now thy loins like a man;
For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

¹² The smith [maketh] an axe, and worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with his strong arm: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth; he drinketh no water, and is faint.

¹⁵ Though I have taught and strengthened their arms, yet do they devise mischief against me.

³⁵ Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning;

¹⁰ Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

¹⁴ Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

¹³ Wherefore girding up the loins of your mind, be sober and set your hope perfectly on the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

⁴⁰ Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from mine eyes.

² It is vain for you to rise up early,
To take rest late,
To eat the bread of toil;
[For] so he giveth unto his beloved sleep.

³ For the foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them: ⁴ but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ⁶ But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out. ⁹ But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut.

⁹ For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

⁷ For yourselves know how ye ought to imitate us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; ⁸ neither did we eat bread for nought at any man's hand, but in labor and travail, working night and day, that we might not burden any of you: ⁹ not because we have not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, that ye should imitate us.

²⁵ And all the women that were wise-hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, the blue, and the purple, the scarlet, and the fine linen. ²⁶ And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun the goats' [hair].

¹¹ For the poor will never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt surely open thy hand unto thy brother, to thy needy, and to thy poor, in thy land.

¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire,
Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone,
And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof ¹⁸ (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And her have I guided from my mother's womb); ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing,
Or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me,
And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

Blessed is he that considereth the poor:
Jehovah will deliver him in the day of evil.

⁹ He hath dispersed, he hath given to the needy;
His righteousness endureth for ever:
His horn shall be exalted with honor.

²⁴ Because I have called, and ye have refused;
I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded;

¹⁷ He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto Jehovah,
And his good deed will he pay him again.

⁹ He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed;
For he giveth of his bread to the poor.

¹ Cast thy bread upon the waters; for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Give a portion to seven, yea, even unto eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

⁷ For ye have the poor always with you, and whensoever ye will ye can do them good: but me ye have not always.

²¹ But as to Israel he saith, All the day long did I spread out my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

¹³ communicating to the necessities of the saints; given to hospitality.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.

¹⁶ But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

²² To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment.

²⁴ Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet delicately,
Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

²⁰ [As] one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon soda,
So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.

⁴² And Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

²⁶ And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks.

¹ Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king's house, over against the king's house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the entrance of the house.

¹⁵ And Mordecai went forth from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan shouted and was glad.

¹³ The king's daughter within [the palace] is all glorious:
Her clothing is inwrought with gold. ¹⁴ She shall be led unto the king in broidered work:
The virgins her companions that follow her
Shall be brought unto thee.

¹⁶ I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry,
With striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt.

¹⁰ I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with sealskin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and covered thee with silk. ¹¹ And I decked thee with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. ¹² And I put a ring upon thy nose, and ear-rings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thy head. ¹³ Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil; and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper unto royal estate.

³ Whose [adorning] let it not be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel;

⁸ And it was given unto her that she should array herself in fine linen, bright [and] pure: for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

¹⁴ And the armies which are in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white [and] pure.

¹⁸ Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, according to thy tribes; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

¹ Now Boaz went up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.

¹¹ And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. Jehovah make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Beth-lehem:

⁷ When I went forth to the gate unto the city,
When I prepared my seat in the street,

¹² And Samson said unto them, Let me now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can declare it unto me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of raiment;

²⁸ And the horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt; and the king's merchants received them in droves, each drove at a price.

¹³ She seeketh wool and flax,
And worketh willingly with her hands.

¹⁹ She layeth her hands to the distaff,
And her hands hold the spindle.

¹⁶ Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of thy handiworks: they traded for thy wares with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

¹⁰ Deck thyself now with excellency and dignity;
And array thyself with honor and majesty.

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart. ¹² Be glad in Jehovah, ye righteous;
And give thanks to his holy memorial [name].

⁹ Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness;
And let thy saints shout for joy.

¹⁶ Her priests also will I clothe with salvation;
And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

¹⁰ I will greatly rejoice in Jehovah, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with a garland, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

¹³ Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry; behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty; behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be put to shame; ¹⁴ behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall wail for vexation of spirit.

²⁰ And he that received the five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: lo, I have gained other five talents. ²¹ His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

¹⁴ But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof].

²⁴ and put on the new man, that after God hath been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

¹⁰ but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

²³ But his wife said unto him, If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these.

²⁴ And she fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me be the iniquity; and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine ears, and hear thou the words of thy handmaid. ²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this worthless fellow, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thy handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send. ²⁶ Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord. ²⁸ Forgive, I pray thee, the trespass of thy handmaid: for Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fighteth the battles of Jehovah; and evil shall not be found in thee all thy days. ²⁹ And though men be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling. ³⁰ And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee prince over Israel, ³¹ that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid.

¹⁶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee. ¹⁷ And he came near unto her; and the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I do hear. ¹⁸ Then she spake, saying, They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask [counsel] at Abel: and so they ended [the matter]. ¹⁹ I am of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of Jehovah? ²⁰ And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. ²¹ The matter is not so: but a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David; deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall. ²² Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

¹⁵ And she said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Tell ye the man that sent you unto me, ¹⁶ Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read. ¹⁷ Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched. ¹⁸ But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: As touching the words which thou hast heard, ¹⁹ because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before Jehovah, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah. ²⁰ Therefore, behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.

⁴ And Esther's maidens and her chamberlains came and told it her; and the queen was exceedingly grieved: and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take his sackcloth from off him; but he received it not.

⁸ If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to-morrow as the king hath said.

³ Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favor in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request: ⁴ for we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my peace, although the adversary could not have compensated for the king's damage. ⁵ Then spake the king Ahasuerus and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so? ⁶ And Esther said, An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

³ And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. ⁴ Then the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre. So Esther arose, and stood before the king. ⁵ And she said, If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king's provinces: ⁶ for how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

³¹ The mouth of the righteous bringeth forth wisdom;
But the perverse tongue shall be cut off.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword;
But the tongue of the wise is health.

²⁴ Pleasant words are [as] a honeycomb,
Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

¹⁵ By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded,
And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

⁸ Open thy mouth for the dumb,
In the cause of all such as are left desolate. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously,
And minister justice to the poor and needy.

¹⁴ O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock,
In the covert of the steep place,
Let me see thy countenance,
Let me hear thy voice;
For sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.

¹¹ Thy lips, O [my] bride, drop [as] the honeycomb:
Honey and milk are under thy tongue;
And the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.

⁶ The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity.

³⁸ And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

⁴² and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb. ⁴³ And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? ⁴⁴ For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. ⁴⁵ And blessed [is] she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. ⁴⁶ And Mary said,
My soul doth magnify the Lord, ⁴⁷ And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. ⁴⁸ For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid:
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. ⁴⁹ For he that is mighty hath done to me great things;
And holy is his name. ⁵⁰ And his mercy is unto generations and generations
On them that fear him. ⁵¹ He hath showed strength with his arm;
He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart. ⁵² He hath put down princes from [their] thrones,
And hath exalted them of low degree. ⁵³ The hungry he hath filled with good things;
And the rich he hath sent empty away. ⁵⁴ He hath given help to Israel his servant,
That he might remember mercy ⁵⁵ (As he spake unto our fathers)
Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.
⁵⁶ And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house.

¹⁵ And all that sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

²⁶ and he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more accurately.

²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.

⁵ Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

¹ In like manner, ye wives, [be] in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behavior of their wives;

⁴ but [let it be] the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible [apparel] of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. ⁵ For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:

⁸ Finally, [be] ye all likeminded, compassionate, loving as brethren, tenderhearted, humbleminded: ⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

¹ Every wise woman buildeth her house;
But the foolish plucketh it down with her own hands.

⁶ Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which they received of us.

⁴ that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,

¹⁹ Bath-sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a throne to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.

¹⁶ O Jehovah, truly I am thy servant:
I am thy servant, the son of thy handmaid;
Thou hast loosed my bonds.

¹ The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.

¹ How beautiful are thy feet in sandals, O prince's daughter!
Thy rounded thighs are like jewels,
The work of the hands of a skilful workman. ² Thy body is [like] a round goblet,
[Wherein] no mingled wine is wanting:
Thy waist is [like] a heap of wheat
Set about with lilies. ³ Thy two breasts are like two fawns
That are twins of a roe. ⁴ Thy neck is like the tower of ivory;
Thine eyes [as] the pools in Heshbon,
By the gate of Bath-rabbim;
Thy nose is like the tower of Lebanon
Which looketh toward Damascus. ⁵ Thy head upon thee is like Carmel,
And the hair of thy head like purple;
The king is held captive in the tresses [thereof]. ⁶ How fair and how pleasant art thou,
O love, for delights! ⁷ This thy stature is like to a palm-tree,
And thy breasts to its clusters. ⁸ I said, I will climb up into the palm-tree,
I will take hold of the branches thereof:
Let thy breasts be as clusters of the vine,
And the smell of thy breath like apples, ⁹ And thy mouth like the best wine,
That goeth down smoothly for my beloved,
Gliding through the lips of those that are asleep.

⁴ Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah; for Jehovah delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. ⁵ For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee; and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.

¹⁵ and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ Every scripture inspired of God [is] also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: ¹⁷ that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

²⁷ that he might present the church to himself a glorious [church], not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

¹⁷ But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive. ¹⁸ And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive? ¹⁹ And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them. ²⁰ And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. ²¹ And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them households.

²⁵ Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

¹¹ to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to show the peoples and the princes her beauty; for she was fair to look on. ¹² But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by the chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

¹¹ Jehovah taketh pleasure in them that fear him,
In those that hope in his lovingkindness.

⁷ The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge;
[But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thy heart;
Neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

¹³ The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil:
Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way,
And the perverse mouth, do I hate.

²² [As] a ring of gold in a swine's snout,
[So is] a fair woman that is without discretion.

¹⁸ It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth from them all.

¹³ [This is] the end of the matter; all hath been heard: Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole [duty] of man.

¹⁵ But thou didst trust in thy beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy whoredoms on every one that passed by; his it was.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁴⁶ And Mary said,

²⁹ but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

¹¹ For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass; and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.

⁷ that the proof of your faith, [being] more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

²⁴ For,
All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory thereof as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower falleth:

² For thou shalt eat the labor of thy hands:
Happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life;
And he that is wise winneth souls.

¹⁶ She considereth a field, and buyeth it;
With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

¹⁶ By their fruits ye shall know them. Do [men] gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

²⁰ Therefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

⁷ For ye have the poor always with you, and whensoever ye will ye can do them good: but me ye have not always. ⁸ She hath done what she could; she hath anointed my body beforehand for the burying. ⁹ And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever the gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.}

³⁹ And Peter arose and went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

²¹ What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. ²² But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end eternal life.

¹ I commend unto you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church that is at Cenchrea: ² that ye receive her in the Lord, worthily of the saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever matter she may have need of you: for she herself also hath been a helper of many, and of mine own self.
³ Salute Prisca and Aquila my fellow-workers in Christ Jesus, ⁴ who for my life laid down their own necks; unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles:

⁶ Salute Mary, who bestowed much labor on you.

¹² Salute Tryphζna and Tryphosa, who labor in the Lord. Salute Persis the beloved, who labored much in the Lord.

¹⁷ Not that I seek for the gift; but I seek for the fruit that increaseth to your account.

²⁵ In like manner also there are good works that are evident; and such as are otherwise cannot be hid.

¹⁰ for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and the love which ye showed toward his name, in that ye ministered unto the saints, and still do minister.

¹³ And I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.
