The man saith unto Ithiel, unto Ithiel and Ucal: ² Surely I am more brutish than any man,
And have not the understanding of a man; ³ And I have not learned wisdom,
Neither have I the knowledge of the Holy One. ⁴ Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended?
Who hath gathered the wind in his fists?
Who hath bound the waters in his garment?
Who hath established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou knowest?
⁵ Every word of God is tried:
He is a shield unto them that take refuge in him. ⁶ Add thou not unto his words,
Lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
⁷ Two things have I asked of thee;
Deny me [them] not before I die: ⁸ Remove far from me falsehood and lies;
Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is needful for me: ⁹ Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who is Jehovah?
Or lest I be poor, and steal,
And use profanely the name of my God.
¹⁰ Slander not a servant unto his master,
Lest he curse thee, and thou be held guilty.
¹¹ There is a generation that curse their father,
And bless not their mother. ¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes,
And yet are not washed from their filthiness. ¹³ There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes!
And their eyelids are lifted up. ¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are [as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives,
To devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
¹⁵ The horseleach hath two daughters, [crying], Give, give.
There are three things that are never satisfied,
Yea, four that say not, Enough: ¹⁶ Sheol; and the barren womb;
The earth that is not satisfied with water;
And the fire that saith not, Enough. ¹⁷ The eye that mocketh at his father,
And despiseth to obey his mother,
The ravens of the valley shall pick it out,
And the young eagles shall eat it.
¹⁸ There are three things which are too wonderful for me,
Yea, four which I know not: ¹⁹ The way of an eagle in the air;
The way of a serpent upon a rock;
The way of a ship in the midst of the sea;
And the way of a man with a maiden. ²⁰ So is the way of an adulterous woman;
She eateth, and wipeth her mouth,
And saith, I have done no wickedness.
²¹ For three things the earth doth tremble,
And for four, [which] it cannot bear: ²² For a servant when he is king;
And a fool when he is filled with food; ²³ For an odious woman when she is married;
And a handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
²⁴ There are four things which are little upon the earth,
But they are exceeding wise: ²⁵ The ants are a people not strong,
Yet they provide their food in the summer; ²⁶ The conies are but a feeble folk,
Yet make they their houses in the rocks; ²⁷ The locusts have no king,
Yet go they forth all of them by bands; ²⁸ The lizard taketh hold with her hands,
Yet is she in kings' palaces.
²⁹ There are three things which are stately in their march,
Yea, four which are stately in going: ³⁰ The lion, which is mightiest among beasts,
And turneth not away for any; ³¹ The greyhound; the he-goat also;
And the king against whom there is no rising up.
³² If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself,
Or if thou hast thought evil,
Lay thy hand upon thy mouth. ³³ For the churning of milk bringeth forth butter,
And the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood;
So the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.

¹⁹ And we have the word of prophecy [made] more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: ²⁰ knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. ²¹ For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge?
Therefore have I uttered that which I understood not,
Things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. ⁴ Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak;
I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. ⁵ I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear;
But now mine eye seeth thee: ⁶ Wherefore I abhor [myself],
And repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁰ For he shall see it.
Wise men die;
The fool and the brutish alike perish,
And leave their wealth to others.

²² So brutish was I, and ignorant;
I was [as] a beast before thee.

⁶ A brutish man knoweth not;
Neither doth a fool understand this:

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction,
And my heart despised reproof;

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁴ Every man is become brutish [and is] without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

²⁵ For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in;

¹⁸ Let no man deceive himself. If any man thinketh that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise.

² If any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth not yet as he ought to know;

⁵ But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

¹² But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, railing in matters whereof they are ignorant, shall in their destroying surely be destroyed, ¹³ suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; [men] that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you; ¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing; ¹⁵ forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the [son] of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing; ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet.

⁷ Canst thou by searching find out God?
Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? ⁸ It is high as heaven; what canst thou do?
Deeper than Sheol; what canst thou know? ⁹ The measure thereof is longer than the earth,
And broader than the sea.

¹⁰ The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom;
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

³ And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is Jehovah of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.

¹¹ get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

¹⁵ For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

¹⁴ Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore-trees: ¹⁵ and Jehovah took me from following the flock, and Jehovah said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

²⁷ All things have been delivered unto me of my Father: and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father; neither doth any know the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal [him].

¹⁷ And Jesus answered and said unto him, { Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.

³ And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true God, and him whom thou didst send, [even] Jesus Christ.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

¹⁸ may be strong to apprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, ¹⁹ and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye may be filled unto all the fulness of God.

⁷ And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and none shall shut, and that shutteth and none openeth:

⁸ And the four living creatures, having each one of them six wings, are full of eyes round about and within: and they have no rest day and night, saying,
Holy, holy, holy, [is] the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.

²⁹ And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

¹³ And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them? ¹⁴ And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. ¹⁵ And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

³ and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Jehovah I was not known to them.

⁵ And Jehovah descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of Jehovah. ⁶ And Jehovah passed by before him, and proclaimed, Jehovah, Jehovah, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness and truth; ⁷ keeping lovingkindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.

⁵⁸ If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, JEHOVAH THY GOD;

¹² It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?

¹⁸ And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful?

⁸ He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds;
And the cloud is not rent under them.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Declare, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest?
Or who stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened?
Or who laid the corner-stone thereof, ⁷ When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
⁸ Or [who] shut up the sea with doors,
When it brake forth, [as if] it had issued out of the womb; ⁹ When I made clouds the garment thereof,
And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it, ¹⁰ And marked out for it my bound,
And set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further;
And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days [began],
[And] caused the dayspring to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth,
And the wicked be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal;
And [all things] stand forth as a garment: ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withholden,
And the high arm is broken.
¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?
Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee?
Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth?
Declare, if thou knowest it all.
¹⁹ Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And as for darkness, where is the place thereof, ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof,
And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof? ²¹ [Doubtless], thou knowest, for thou wast then born,
And the number of thy days is great! ²² Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow,
Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble,
Against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light parted,
Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?
²⁵ Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood,
Or the way for the lightning of the thunder; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is;
On the wilderness, wherein there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the waste and desolate [ground],
And to cause the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Hath the rain a father?
Or who hath begotten the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice?
And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? ³⁰ The waters hide themselves [and become] like stone,
And the face of the deep is frozen.
³¹ Canst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades,
Or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season?
Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train? ³³ Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens?
Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?
³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds,
That abundance of waters may cover thee? ³⁵ Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go,
And say unto thee, Here we are? ³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts?
Or who hath given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust runneth into a mass,
And the clods cleave fast together?
³⁹ Canst thou hunt the prey for the lioness,
Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ When they couch in their dens,
[And] abide in the covert to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provideth for the raven his prey,
When his young ones cry unto God,
[And] wander for lack of food?

⁷ I will tell of the decree:
Jehovah said unto me, Thou art my son;
This day have I begotten thee.

²⁷ All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto Jehovah;
And all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

² For he hath founded it upon the seas,
And established it upon the floods.

¹⁸ Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led away captives;
Thou hast received gifts among men,
Yea, [among] the rebellious also, that Jehovah God might dwell [with them].

² Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment;
Who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain; ³ Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters;
Who maketh the clouds his chariot;
Who walketh upon the wings of the wind; ⁴ Who maketh winds his messengers;
Flames of fire his ministers; ⁵ Who laid the foundations of the earth,
That it should not be moved for ever. ⁶ Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a vesture;
The waters stood above the mountains. ⁷ At thy rebuke they fled;
At the voice of thy thunder they hasted away ⁸ (The mountains rose, the valleys sank down)
Unto the place which thou hadst founded for them. ⁹ Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over;
That they turn not again to cover the earth. ¹⁰ He sendeth forth springs into the valleys;
They run among the mountains; ¹¹ They give drink to every beast of the field;
The wild asses quench their thirst. ¹² By them the birds of the heavens have their habitation;
They sing among the branches. ¹³ He watereth the mountains from his chambers:
The earth is filled with the fruit of thy works. ¹⁴ He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle,
And herb for the service of man;
That he may bring forth food out of the earth, ¹⁵ And wine that maketh glad the heart of man,
[And] oil to make his face to shine,
And bread that strengtheneth man's heart. ¹⁶ The trees of Jehovah are filled [with moisture],
The cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted; ¹⁷ Where the birds make their nests:
As for the stork, the fir-trees are her house. ¹⁸ The high mountains are for the wild goats;
The rocks are a refuge for the conies. ¹⁹ He appointed the moon for seasons:
The sun knoweth his going down. ²⁰ Thou makest darkness, and it is night,
Wherein all the beasts of the forest creep forth. ²¹ The young lions roar after their prey,
And seek their food from God. ²² The sun ariseth, they get them away,
And lay them down in their dens. ²³ Man goeth forth unto his work And to his labor until the evening. ²⁴ O Jehovah, how manifold are thy works!
In wisdom hast thou made them all:
The earth is full of thy riches. ²⁵ Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
Wherein are things creeping innumerable,
Both small and great beasts. ²⁶ There go the ships;
There is leviathan, whom thou hast formed to play therein. ²⁷ These wait all for thee,
That thou mayest give them their food in due season. ²⁸ Thou givest unto them, they gather;
Thou openest thy hand, they are satisfied with good. ²⁹ Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled;
Thou takest away their breath, they die,
And return to their dust. ³⁰ Thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created;
And thou renewest the face of the ground. ³¹ Let the glory of Jehovah endure for ever;
Let Jehovah rejoice in his works: ³² Who looketh on the earth, and it trembleth;
He toucheth the mountains, and they smoke. ³³ I will sing unto Jehovah as long as I live:
I will sing praise to my God while I have any being. ³⁴ Let thy meditation be sweet unto him:
I will rejoice in Jehovah. ³⁵ Let sinners be consumed out of the earth.
And let the wicked be no more.
Bless Jehovah, O my soul.
Praise ye Jehovah.

¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

¹² Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? ¹³ Who hath directed the Spirit of Jehovah, or being his counsellor hath taught him? ¹⁴ With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding? ¹⁵ Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are accounted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. ¹⁶ And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt-offering. ¹⁷ All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing, and vanity.
¹⁸ To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? ¹⁹ The image, a workman hath cast [it], and the goldsmith overlayeth it with gold, and casteth [for it] silver chains. ²⁰ He that is too impoverished for [such] an oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a skilful workman to set up a graven image, that shall not be moved. ²¹ Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? ²² [It is] he that sitteth above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in; ²³ that bringeth princes to nothing; that maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. ²⁴ Yea, they have not been planted; yea, they have not been sown; yea, their stock hath not taken root in the earth: moreover he bloweth upon them, and they wither, and the whirlwind taketh them away as stubble. ²⁵ To whom then will ye liken me, that I should be equal [to him]? saith the Holy One. ²⁶ Lift up your eyes on high, and see who hath created these, that bringeth out their host by number; he calleth them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and for that he is strong in power, not one is lacking.
²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from Jehovah, and the justice [due] to me is passed away from my God? ²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding. ²⁹ He giveth power to the faint; and to him that hath no might he increaseth strength. ³⁰ Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: ³¹ but they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

⁸ By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who [among them] considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke [was due]?

⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name whereby he shall be called: Jehovah our righteousness.

²¹ And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins. ²² Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, ²³ Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,
And they shall call his name Immanuel;
which is, being interpreted,
God with us.

²² All things have been delivered unto me of my Father: and no one knoweth who the Son is, save the Father; and who the Father is, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal [him].}

¹³ And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, [even] the Son of man, who is in heaven.

⁶ But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:)

⁸ Wherefore he saith,
When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive,
And gave gifts unto men. ⁹ (Now this, He ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

¹² And his eyes [are] a flame of fire, and upon his head [are] many diadems; and he hath a name written which no one knoweth but he himself.

¹ After these things the word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, [and] thy exceeding great reward.

³ But thou, O Jehovah, art a shield about me;
My glory and the lifter up of my head.

⁶ The words of Jehovah are pure words;
As silver tried in a furnace on the earth,
Purified seven times.

³⁰ As for God, his way is perfect:
The word of Jehovah is tried;
He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in him.

⁸ The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart:
The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.

¹¹ For Jehovah God is a sun and a shield:
Jehovah will give grace and glory;
No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

² I will say of Jehovah, He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in whom I trust.

⁹ O Israel, trust thou in Jehovah:
He is their help and their shield. ¹⁰ O house of Aaron, trust ye in Jehovah:
He is their help and their shield. ¹¹ Ye that fear Jehovah, trust in Jehovah:
He is their help and their shield.

¹⁴⁰ Thy word is very pure;
Therefore thy servant loveth it.

² My lovingkindness, and my fortress,
My high tower, and my deliverer;
My shield, and he in whom I take refuge;
Who subdueth my people under me.

¹² So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.

² Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you.

³² What thing soever I command you, that shall ye observe to do: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God,
And talk deceitfully for him? ⁸ Will ye show partiality to him?
Will ye contend for God? ⁹ Is it good that he should search you out?
Or as one deceiveth a man, will ye deceive him?

¹⁵ Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we witnessed of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead are not raised.

¹⁸ I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto him the plagues which are written in this book: ¹⁹ and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.

⁵ In Gibeon Jehovah appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. ⁶ And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great lovingkindness, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great lovingkindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ And now, O Jehovah my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in. ⁸ And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this thy great people?

⁹ And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I am taken from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

And hast not withholden the request of his lips. [Selah

⁴ One thing have I asked of Jehovah, that will I seek after:
That I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of Jehovah,
And to inquire in his temple.

⁴² but one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.}

²⁰ And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said, The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God who hath fed me all my life long unto this day, ¹⁶ the angel who hath redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

¹⁵ And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, What is it? for they knew not what it was. And Moses said unto them, It is the bread which Jehovah hath given you to eat.

¹⁸ And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

²¹ And they gathered it morning by morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. ²² And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

²⁹ See, for that Jehovah hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

³⁵ And the children of Israel did eat the manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat the manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

³⁰ and for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him of the king, every day a portion, all the days of his life.

¹² I have not gone back from the commandment of his lips;
I have treasured up the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie:
In the balances they will go up;
They are together lighter than vanity. ¹⁰ Trust not in oppression,
And become not vain in robbery:
If riches increase, set not your heart [thereon].

²⁹ Remove from me the way of falsehood;
And grant me thy law graciously.

³⁷ Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity,
And quicken me in thy ways.

⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue
Is a vapor driven to and fro by them that seek death.

⁸ He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity;
And the rod of his wrath shall fail.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?
For [riches] certainly make themselves wings,
Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

² Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

¹⁸ Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and sin as it were with a cart rope;

⁴ None sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

²¹ Then Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah into the court of the guard; and they gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

³⁴ and for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him by the king of Babylon, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.

¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread.

³³ But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

³ Give us day by day our daily bread.

⁸ And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the ruler of the feast. And they bare it.

¹⁵ and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and bring you good tidings, that ye should turn from these vain things unto a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:

⁶ But godliness with contentment is great gain: ⁷ for we brought nothing into the world, for neither can we carry anything out; ⁸ but having food and covering we shall be therewith content.

² And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken unto his voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

¹ And if any one sin, in that he heareth the voice of adjuration, he being a witness, whether he hath seen or known, if he do not utter [it], then he shall bear his iniquity.

¹⁰ And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall bring thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee, great and goodly cities, which thou buildest not, ¹¹ and houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and cisterns hewn out, which thou hewedst not, vineyards and olive-trees, which thou plantedst not, and thou shalt eat and be full; ¹² then beware lest thou forget Jehovah, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

¹⁰ And thou shalt eat and be full, and thou shalt bless Jehovah thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.
¹¹ Beware lest thou forget Jehovah thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: ¹² lest, when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; ¹³ and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; ¹⁴ then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget Jehovah thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

²⁰ For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, flowing with milk and honey, and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxed fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and despise me, and break my covenant.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked:
Thou art waxed fat, thou art grown thick, thou art become sleek;
Then he forsook God who made him,
And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

²⁷ And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.

¹⁵ Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you after this manner, neither believe ye him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?
¹⁶ And his servants spake yet more against Jehovah God, and against his servant Hezekiah. ¹⁷ He wrote also letters, to rail on Jehovah, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

²⁵ And they took fortified cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns hewn out, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit-trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.
²⁶ Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their back, and slew thy prophets that testified against them to turn them again unto thee, and they wrought great provocations.

²⁴ If I have made gold my hope,
And have said to the fine gold, [Thou art] my confidence; ²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ If I have beheld the sun when it shined,
Or the moon walking in brightness, ²⁷ And my heart hath been secretly enticed,
And my mouth hath kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges;
For I should have denied the God that is above.

³ For the sceptre of wickedness shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous;
That the righteous put not forth their hands unto iniquity.

³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal
To satisfy himself when he is hungry: ³¹ But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold;
He shall give all the substance of his house.

²⁴ Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul;
He heareth the adjuration and uttereth nothing.

³¹ O generation, see ye the word of Jehovah. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? or a land of thick darkness? wherefore say my people, We are broken loose; we will come no more unto thee?

¹⁴ And thy renown went forth among the nations for thy beauty; for it was perfect, through my majesty which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord Jehovah.
¹⁵ But thou didst trust in thy beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy whoredoms on every one that passed by; his it was.

⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fulness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. ⁵⁰ And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw [good].

¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men.

³⁰ The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?

⁶ According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me.

⁷² And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man.

⁷⁴ Then began he to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And straightway the cock crew.

²² And the people shouted, [saying], The voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

⁹ Beware that there be not a base thought in thy heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou give him nought; and he cry unto Jehovah against thee, and it be sin unto thee.

¹⁵ Thou shalt not deliver unto his master a servant that is escaped from his master unto thee:

⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

⁹ And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearkenest thou to men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

¹⁹ Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be Jehovah that hath stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if it be the children of men, cursed be they before Jehovah: for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.

¹⁵ And David said to him, Wilt thou bring me down to this troop? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me up into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this troop.

¹ And when David was a little past the top [of the ascent], behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. ² And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink. ³ And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said, To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. ⁴ Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I do obeisance; let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, O king.

²⁶ And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame. ²⁷ And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

²² Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah look upon it, and require it.
²³ And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus. ²⁴ For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Jehovah delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment upon Joash.

²⁶ He that withholdeth grain, the people shall curse him;
But blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

²³ These also are [sayings] of the wise.

To have respect of persons in judgment is not good. ²⁴ He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous,
Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;

²⁷ He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack;
But he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

²¹ Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;

⁸ Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews. ⁹ They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar the king, O king, live for ever. ¹⁰ Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image; ¹¹ and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. ¹² There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
¹³ Then Nebuchadnezzar in [his] rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king. ¹⁴ Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them, Is it of purpose, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that ye serve not my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? ¹⁵ Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, [well]: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands? ¹⁶ Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer thee in this matter. ¹⁷ If it be [so], our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thy hand, O king. ¹⁸ But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

¹³ Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the interdict that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

²⁴ And the king commanded, and they brought those men that had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.

⁴ Who art thou that judgest the servant of another? to his own lord he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be made to stand; for the Lord hath power to make him stand.

¹⁷ And he that curseth his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

⁹ For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹⁶ Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁰ Whoso curseth his father or his mother,
His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes,
And yet are not washed from their filthiness. ¹³ There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes!
And their eyelids are lifted up. ¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are [as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives,
To devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

¹⁷ The eye that mocketh at his father,
And despiseth to obey his mother,
The ravens of the valley shall pick it out,
And the young eagles shall eat it.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁴ For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death. ⁵ But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given [to God]; ⁶ he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death: ¹¹ but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is Corban,} that is to say, Given [to God]; ¹² { ye no longer suffer him to do aught for his father or his mother; ¹³ making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things ye do.}

⁴ But if any widow hath children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety towards their own family, and to requite their parents: for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

⁸ But if any provideth not for his own, and specially his own household, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.

⁹ But ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for [God's] own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

⁵ And the man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

¹³ Then said Micah, Now know I that Jehovah will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest.

¹³ And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of Jehovah: I have performed the commandment of Jehovah. ¹⁴ And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

⁹ I am clean, without transgression;
I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

² For he flattereth himself in his own eyes,
That his iniquity will not be found out and be hated.

² Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.

⁷ Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean:
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes;
But Jehovah weigheth the spirits.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes;
But Jehovah weighteth the hearts.

¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

⁵ that say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

²² For though thou wash thee with lye, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord Jehovah. ²³ How canst thou say, I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: [thou art] a swift dromedary traversing her ways; ²⁴ a wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind in her desire; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

³⁵ Yet thou saidst, I am innocent; surely his anger is turned away from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thine evil thoughts lodge within thee?

²⁵ And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

¹ In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, { Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also?

¹⁵ And he said unto them, { Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

¹¹ And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.

⁵ holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.

¹⁵ To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. ¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

⁵ not by works [done] in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

⁷ but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin. ⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loveth us, and loosed us from our sins by his blood;

⁵ Whoso privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I destroy:
Him that hath a high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

Jehovah, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty;
Neither do I exercise myself in great matters,
Or in things too wonderful for me.

¹⁷ Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that shed innocent blood;

⁴ A high look, and a proud heart,
[Even] the lamp of the wicked, is sin.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and Jehovah alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁶ Moreover Jehovah said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet;

² Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyre, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because thy heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art man, and not God, though thou didst set thy heart as the heart of God;— ³ behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that is hidden from thee; ⁴ by thy wisdom and by thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures; ⁵ by thy great wisdom [and] by thy traffic hast thou increased thy riches, and thy heart is lifted up because of thy riches;—

⁹ Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou art man, and not God, in the hand of him that woundeth thee.

³⁶ And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods; and he shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished; for that which is determined shall be done. ³⁷ Neither shall he regard the gods of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall magnify himself above all.

⁴ Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright in him; but the righteous shall live by his faith.

³ let no man beguile you in any wise: for [it will not be], except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, ⁴ he that opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sitteth in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God.

¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

⁷ Arise, O Jehovah; save me, O my God:
For thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone;
Thou hast broken the teeth of the wicked.

⁸ He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages;
In the secret places doth he murder the innocent;
His eyes are privily set against the helpless. ⁹ He lurketh in secret as a lion in his covert;
He lieth in wait to catch the poor:
He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,
Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;
I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

⁴ Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge,
Who eat up my people [as] they eat bread,
And call not upon Jehovah?

² Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness,
Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ My soul is among lions;
I lie among them that are set on fire,
Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.

⁶ Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth:
Break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Jehovah.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword;
But the tongue of the wise is health.

¹⁶ He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain],
[And] he that giveth to the rich, [shall come] only to want.

³ A needy man that oppresseth the poor
Is [like] a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.

¹ Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and, behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

⁷ And the instruments of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the meek with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

⁵ And, behold, another beast, a second, like to a bear; and it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. ⁶ After this I beheld, and, lo, another, like a leopard, which had upon its back four wings of a bird; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. ⁷ After this I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, a fourth beast, terrible and powerful, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

⁷ they that pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father go unto the [same] maiden, to profane my holy name:

¹ Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say unto their lords, Bring, and let us drink.

⁴ Hear this, O ye that would swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail,

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

¹ And I said, Hear, I pray you, ye heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: is it not for you to know justice? ² ye who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron. ⁴ Then shall they cry unto Jehovah, but he will not answer them; yea, he will hide his face from them at that time, according as they have wrought evil in their doings.
⁵ Thus saith Jehovah concerning the prophets that make my people to err; that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and whoso putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him:

¹⁴ Thou didst pierce with his own staves the head of his warriors:
They came as a whirlwind to scatter me;
Their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly.

³ Her princes in the midst of her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave nothing till the morrow.

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted; and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

⁸ And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as [the teeth] of lions.

¹⁶ There are six things which Jehovah hateth;
Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:

²¹ For three things the earth doth tremble,
And for four, [which] it cannot bear:

²⁴ There are four things which are little upon the earth,
But they are exceeding wise:

²⁹ There are three things which are stately in their march,
Yea, four which are stately in going:

¹¹ Yea, the dogs are greedy, they can never have enough; and these are shepherds that cannot understand: they have all turned to their own way, each one to his gain, from every quarter. ¹² Come ye, [say they], I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to-morrow shall be as this day, [a day] great beyond measure.

³ But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the harlot.

⁴⁴ Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use [this] proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. ⁴⁵ Thou art the daughter of thy mother, that loatheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children: your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. ⁴⁶ And thine elder sister is Samaria, that dwelleth at thy left hand, she and her daughters; and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.

¹⁸ Their drink is become sour; they play the harlot continually; her rulers dearly love shame.

³ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Damascus, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron.

⁶ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Gaza, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole people, to deliver them up to Edom.

⁹ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Tyre, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole people to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant.

¹¹ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.

¹³ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they may enlarge their border.

¹ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Moab, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:

⁴ Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Judah, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have rejected the law of Jehovah, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers did walk.

³ Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge [is ready] for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the evil desire of his soul: thus they weave it together.

³² Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, { If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

⁴⁴ Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

¹⁸ For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent.

³ And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.

¹³ suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; [men] that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you; ¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing; ¹⁵ forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the [son] of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing;

¹¹ Woe unto them! for they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah. ¹² These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹ And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and she said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

²⁰ Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied;
And the eyes of man are never satisfied.

⁵ Yea, moreover, wine is treacherous, a haughty man, that keepeth not at home; who enlargeth his desire as Sheol, and he is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all peoples.

²¹ and he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. ²² And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. ²³ And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. ²⁴ And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had done unto him. ²⁵ And he said,
Cursed be Canaan;
A servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. ²⁶ And he said,
Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Shem;
And let Canaan be his servant. ²⁷ God enlarge Japheth,
And let him dwell in the tents of Shem;
And let Canaan be his servant.

¹⁸ If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and, though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them; ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

²⁶ And thy dead body shall be food unto all birds of the heavens, and unto the beasts of the earth; and there shall be none to frighten them away.

⁴⁴ And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the field.

⁹ And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between heaven and earth; and the mule that was under him went on. ¹⁰ And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.

¹⁴ Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. ¹⁵ And ten young men that bare Joab's armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
¹⁶ And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people. ¹⁷ And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

¹⁰ And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water was poured upon them from heaven; and she suffered neither the birds of the heavens to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

²² Hearken unto thy father that begat thee,
And despise not thy mother when she is old.

¹¹ There is a generation that curse their father,
And bless not their mother.

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge?
Therefore have I uttered that which I understood not,
Things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁶ [Such] knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain unto it.

¹⁶ And if a man entice a virgin that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife.

²⁷ Is it at thy command that the eagle mounteth up,
And maketh her nest on high?

³¹ but they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

¹¹ And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, ¹² Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, ¹³ and a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, and she be not taken in the act; ¹⁴ and the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: ¹⁵ then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and shall bring her oblation for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a meal-offering of jealousy, a meal-offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.
¹⁶ And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before Jehovah: ¹⁷ and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water. ¹⁸ And the priest shall set the woman before Jehovah, and let the hair of the woman's head go loose, and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal-offering of jealousy: and the priest shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that causeth the curse. ¹⁹ And the priest shall cause her to swear, and shall say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou have not gone aside to uncleanness, being under thy husband, be thou free from this water of bitterness that causeth the curse. ²⁰ But if thou have gone aside, being under thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee besides thy husband: ²¹ then the priest shall cause the woman to swear with the oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, Jehovah make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when Jehovah doth make thy thigh to fall away, and thy body to swell; ²² and this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, and make thy body to swell, and thy thigh to fall away. And the woman shall say, Amen, Amen.
²³ And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out into the water of bitterness: ²⁴ and he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causeth the curse; and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her [and become] bitter. ²⁵ And the priest shall take the meal-offering of jealousy out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the meal-offering before Jehovah, and bring it unto the altar: ²⁶ and the priest shall take a handful of the meal-offering, as the memorial thereof, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall make the woman drink the water. ²⁷ And when he hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, if she be defiled, and have committed a trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her [and become] bitter, and her body shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. ²⁸ And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.
²⁹ This is the law of jealousy, when a wife, being under her husband, goeth aside, and is defiled; ³⁰ or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon a man, and he is jealous of his wife; then shall he set the woman before Jehovah, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law.

⁶ So that she findeth not the level path of life:
Her ways are unstable, [and] she knoweth [it] not.

¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him,
[And] with an impudent face she said unto him: ¹⁴ Sacrifices of peace-offerings are with me;
This day have I paid my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee,
Diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. ¹⁶ I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry,
With striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed
With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning;
Let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For the man is not at home;
He is gone a long journey: ²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him;
He will come home at the full moon. ²¹ With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield;
With the flattering of her lips she forceth him along. ²² He goeth after her straightway,
As an ox goeth to the slaughter,
Or as [one in] fetters to the correction of the fool; ²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver;
As a bird hasteth to the snare,
And knoweth not that it is for his life.

³ Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail; and the woman was of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants now-a-days that break away every man from his master. ¹¹ Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men of whom I know not whence they are?

²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this worthless fellow, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thy handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that Jehovah smote Nabal, so that he died.

¹⁶ And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad over all the ground, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

¹⁰ Delicate living is not seemly for a fool;
Much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

⁷ I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.

⁴ And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. ⁵ And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbor: the child shall behave himself proudly against the old man, and the base against the honorable.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father;
And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

⁹ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,
Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land,
Than with a contentious and fretful woman.

¹⁵ A continual dropping in a very rainy day
And a contentious woman are alike:

²¹ He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child
Shall have him become a son at the last.

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee;
And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee:

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard;
Consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no chief,
Overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provideth her bread in the summer,
And gathereth her food in the harvest.

⁵ And the coney, because he cheweth the cud but parteth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you.

¹⁸ The high mountains are for the wild goats;
The rocks are a refuge for the conies.

⁴ Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to-morrow will I bring locusts into thy border: ⁵ and they shall cover the face of the earth, so that one shall not be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field: ⁶ and thy houses shall be filled, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; as neither thy fathers nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned, and went out from Pharaoh.

¹³ And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and Jehovah brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all the night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. ¹⁴ And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the borders of Egypt; very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. ¹⁵ For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing, either tree or herb of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

³⁴ He spake, and the locust came,
And the grasshopper, and that without number,

⁴ That which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the canker-worm eaten; and that which the canker-worm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten.

⁶ For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number; his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the jaw-teeth of a lioness. ⁷ He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig-tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

⁷ They run like mighty men; they climb the wall like men of war; and they march every one on his ways, and they break not their ranks. ⁸ Neither doth one thrust another; they march every one in his path; and they burst through the weapons, and break not off [their course]. ⁹ They leap upon the city; they run upon the wall; they climb up into the houses; they enter in at the windows like a thief. ¹⁰ The earth quaketh before them; the heavens tremble; the sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. ¹¹ And Jehovah uttereth his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strong that executeth his word; for the day of Jehovah is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

²⁵ And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the canker-worm, and the caterpillar, and the palmer-worm, my great army which I sent among you.

³ And out of the smoke came forth locusts upon the earth; and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. ⁴ And it was said unto them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, but only such men as have not the seal of God on their foreheads. ⁵ And it was given them that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when it striketh a man. ⁶ And in those days men shall seek death, and shall in no wise find it; and they shall desire to die, and death fleeth from them. ⁷ And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared for war; and upon their heads as it were crowns like unto gold, and their faces were as men's faces. ⁸ And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as [the teeth] of lions. ⁹ And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to war. ¹⁰ And they have tails like unto scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt men five months. ¹¹ They have over them as king the angel of the abyss: his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek [tongue] he hath the name Apollyon.

²⁴ Behold, the people riseth up as a lioness,
And as a lion doth he lift himself up:
He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey,
And drink the blood of the slain.

¹⁸ And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them,
If ye had not plowed with my heifer,
Ye had not found out my riddle.

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death;
But a wise man will pacify it.

² The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion:
He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.

⁵ Mark me, and be astonished,
And lay your hand upon your mouth.

⁴ Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer thee?
I lay my hand upon my mouth.

²⁸ Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise;
When he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent.

¹² Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit?
There is more hope of a fool than of him.

³ Be not hasty to go out of his presence; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him. ⁴ For the king's word [hath] power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

¹⁶ The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall lay their hand upon their mouth; their ears shall be deaf. ¹⁷ They shall lick the dust like a serpent; like crawling things of the earth they shall come trembling out of their close places; they shall come with fear unto Jehovah our God, and shall be afraid because of thee.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

¹⁸ A wrathful man stirreth up contention;
But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

²⁸ A perverse man scattereth abroad strife;
And a whisperer separateth chief friends.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water:
Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

²¹ [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire,
So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

²⁵ He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife;
But he that putteth his trust in Jehovah shall be made fat.

²² An angry man stirreth up strife,
And a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.
