¹ THEN Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the Devil.

¹² And immediately the Spirit drives him forth into the wilderness. ¹³ And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. ¹⁴ And after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, publishing the good news of the kingdom of God, ¹⁵ and saying: The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the good news.

¹ AND Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan; and he was led in the Sprit into the wilderness ² forty days, tempted by the Devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he hungered. ³ And the Devil said to him: If thou art the Son of God, command this stone that it become bread. ⁴ And Jesus answered him, saying: It is written, Man shall not live on bread alone. ⁵ And the Devil, leading him up into a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. ⁶ And the Devil said to him: All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them; because it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomsoever I will. ⁷ If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. ⁸ And Jesus answering said to him: It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. ⁹ And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him: If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence. ¹⁰ For it is written: He will give his angels command concerning thee, to keep thee; ¹¹ and on their hands they shall bear thee up, lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone. ¹² And Jesus answering said to him: It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. ¹³ And having finished every temptation, the Devil departed from him for a season.

³⁰ I will no longer talk much with you; for the prince of the world comes, and in me he has nothing.

³⁹ And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.

¹⁴ For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are sons of God.

¹⁸ For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

¹⁵ For we have not a high priest who can not be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but who has in all points been tempted in like manner, without sin. ¹⁶ Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
