What Israel is seeking, this it did not obtain; but the election did obtain it, while the rest were dulled. ⁸ Just as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that were not to see and ears that were not to hear, to this very day.” ⁹ And David says: “Let their table be made into a snare and into a trap, into a stumbling block and into a retribution to them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened so as not to see, and their back always be bowed down.”
