Jacob left Beer-sheba and traveled toward Haran.
He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.
He dreamed and saw a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
And he saw the Lord by his side, saying, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: I will give to you and to your seed this land on which you are sleeping.
"Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Every family on earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants.
"Remember, I am with you. I will watch over you wherever you go. I will also bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I do what I have promised you."
When Jacob was awaked out of his sleep, he said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware."
And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had under his head. He set it up as a marker and poured oil on top of it.
And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza.
Jacob made a vow. He said: "If God will be with me and will watch over me on my trip and give me food to eat and clothes to wear,
"and if I return safely to my father's home, then the LORD will be my God.
And this stone which I have put up for a pillar will be God's house: and of all you give me, I will give a tenth part to you.
