God appeared to Solomon that night and said to him, Ask what I shall give thee.
Thereupon Solomon said to God, Thou hast shewn great kindness to my father David, and hast made me king in his stead,
now therefore, Lord my God, let thy name I beseech thee be established on my father David. Seeing thou hast made me king over a people numerous as the dust of the earth,
grant me now wisdom and understanding that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people which is so great?
And God said to Solomon, Because this hath been in thy heart; and thou hast not asked wealth nor glory nor the life of thy enemies; nor even asked long life; but hast asked for thyself wisdom and understanding that thou mayst judge my people over whom I have made thee king:
Wisdom and understanding I now give thee: And I will give thee riches and wealth and glory, such as none of the kings who were before thee have had; nor shall any after thee have the like.
