Matthew 4:1-11

Noyes(i) 1 Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the Devil. 2 And when he had tasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God." 5 Then the Devil taketh him into the holy city, and setteth him on the pinnacle of the temple; 6 and saith to him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down; for it is written, "He will give his angels charge concerning thee; and in their hands they will bear thee up, that thou mayst not dash thy foot against a stone." 7 Jesus said to him, Again it is written, "Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God." 8 Again, the Devil taketh him m an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory; 9 and said to him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus to him, Be gone, Satan! for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." 11 Then the Devil leaveth him; and lo! angels came and ministered to him.
