Matthew(i)
13 And one told Thamar sayinge: beholde, thy father in lawe goth vp to Thymnathe, to shere hys shepe.
14 And she pute hyr wyddows garments of from her & couered her wyth a clooke, & dysguysed her self: And sat her downe at the enterynge of Enaim which is by the heye waye syde to Thymnath, for because she sawe that Sela was growne, and she was not geuen vnto hym to wyfe.
15 When Iuda sawe her, he thought it had bene an whoore, because she had couered her face.
16 And turned to her vnto the waye and sayde, come I praye the, let me lye wyth the, for he knewe not that it was his daughter in lawe. And she sayd what wylt thou geue me for to lye wt me?
17 Than sayde he, I wyl sende the a kydd from the flocke. She answered, Than geue me a pledge tyl thou send it.
18 Than sayde he, what pledge shall I geue the? And she sayde: thy sygnet, thy bracelet, and thy staffe that is in thy hande. And he gaue it her & lay by her, & she was whith childe by him.
19 And she gather vp & went & put her mantell from her, and put on her wydowes rayment agayn.
20 And Iudas sent the kydd by his neybure of Odollam, for to fetch out his pledge agayn from the wyfes hande. But he found her not.
21 Than asked he the men of the same place sayinge: where is the whoore that sat at Enaim in the waye? And they sayde: there was no whoore here.
22 And he came to Iuda agayne sayinge: I can not fynde her, & also the men of the place sayd: that there was no whoore there.
23 And Iuda sayde: let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: for I sent the kydd and thou couldest not fynde her.
24 And it came to passe that after .iij. monethes, one tolde Iuda sayinge: Thamar thy daughter in lawe hath played the whoore, & wyth playinge the whoore is become greate wt chylde.
25 And Iuda sayde: brynge her forth & let her be brente. And when they brought her forth, she sent to her father in law saying: by the man vnto whome these thynges pertayne, am I wyth chylde. And sayd also: loke whose are thys seall, bracelet, and staffe.
26 And Iuda knewe them saying: she is more ryghtwes than I, because I gaue her not to Sela my sonne. But he lay with her nomore.
27 When tyme was come that she shulde be delyuered, beholde there was two twynnes in her wombe.
28 And as she traueled, the one put out hys hande and the mydwyfe toke & bound a redde threde aboute it sayinge: thys wyll come oute fyrste.
29 But he plucked hys hande backe agayne, and hys brother came out. And she sayd: wherfore hast thou rent a rent vpon the? and called hym Pharez.
30 And afterwarde came oute his brother that had the rede threde about his hande, whyche was, called Zarah.
