MLV(i)
1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, saying, To your seed will I give it.
2 And I will send a messenger before you and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite–
3 to a land flowing with milk and honey. Because I will not go up in the midst of you, because you are a stubborn people, lest I consume you on the way.
4 And when the people heard these evil word, they mourned and no man put his ornaments on him. 5 And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to the sons of Israel, You* are a stiff-necked people. If I go up into the midst of you for one moment, I will consume you. Therefore now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do to you. 6 And the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from Mount Horeb onward.
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and to pitch it outside the camp, afar off from the camp and he called it, The tent of meeting. And it happened, that everyone who sought Jehovah went out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
8 And it happened, when Moses went out to the tent, that all the people rose up and stood, every man at his tent door and looked after Moses, until he had gone into the tent. 9 And it happened, when Moses entered into the tent, the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tent and Jehovah spoke with Moses. 10 And all the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the tent. And all the people rose up and worshiped, every man at his tent door.
11 And Jehovah spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend and he turned again into the camp. But his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart out of the tent.
12 And Moses said to Jehovah, See, say to me, Bring up this people and you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, I know you by name and you have also found favor in my sight.
13 Now therefore, I beseech you, if I have found favor in your sight, show me now your ways, that I may know you, to the end that I may find favor in your sight. And consider that this nation is your people. 14 And he said, My presence will go with you and I will give you rest.
15 And Moses said to him, If your presence do not go, do not carry us up from here. 16 For how will it now be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth?
17 And Jehovah said to Moses, I will do this thing also that you have spoken, because you have found favor in my sight and I know you by name.
18 And he said, I beseech you, show me your glory. 19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim the name of Jehovah before you. I will be merciful to whom I may be merciful and I will be compassionate to whomever I may be compassionate. 20 And he said, You cannot see my face, because man will not see me and live.
21 And Jehovah said, Behold, there is a place by me and you will stand upon the rock. 22 And it will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 And I will take away my hand and you will see my back, but my face will not be seen.
4 And when the people heard these evil word, they mourned and no man put his ornaments on him. 5 And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to the sons of Israel, You* are a stiff-necked people.
