Godbey⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹⁷ Then they being assembled, Pilate said to them, Whom do you wish that I may release unto you? Barabbas? or Jesus who is called Christ? ¹⁸ For he knew that they delivered Him on account of envy. ¹⁹ And he sitting on his tribunal, his wife sent to him, saying, Let there be nothing to thee and that just man: for this day I suffered many things in a dream on account of Him. ²⁰ And the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. ²¹ And the governor responding said to them, Which of the two do you wish that I shall release unto you? And they said Barabbas. ²² Pilate says to them, Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all say to him, Let Him be crucified. ²³ And the governor said, For what evil hath He done? And they continued to cry out more vociferously, saying, Let Him be crucified. ²⁴ And Pilate seeing that he profits nothing, but rather an uproar supervenes, having taken water, washed his hands in the presence of the multitude, saying, For I am free from the blood of this just one: you shall see to it. ²⁵ And all the people responding said, His blood be upon us, and upon our children.
