John 1:21-30 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.” ²² Therefore they said to him, “Who are you, that we might give an answer to those having sent us? What do you say about yourself?” ²³ He was saying, “I am a voice crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’” as Isaiah the prophet said. ²⁴ And those having been sent were of the Pharisees, ²⁵ and they asked him and said to him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” ²⁶ John answered them saying, “I baptize with water, but in the midst of you stands One whom you do not know, ²⁷ the One coming after me, of whom am I not worthy that I should untie the strap of His sandal.” ²⁸ These things took place in Bethany, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ On the next day, he sees Jesus coming to him and says, “Behold the Lamb of God, the One taking away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is He concerning whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who has precedence over me, because He was before me.’
