1. stream, river, Num 24:6 (JE), Job 14:11; Job 40:23; Ps 105:41 (in simile), Isa 48:18 (id.), Isa 59:19 (id.) + often; frequently of particular rivers; r. of Eden Gen 2:10 and its branches vGen 2:13 vGen 2:14 (all J); נְהַר מִצְרַיִם Gen 15:18 (J; i.e., si vera 1., the Nile) but read probably ׳נַחַל מ, whence נהר through influence of following נהר — compare 2Kgs 24:7ZMG xi.1886, 699 (alternative), LagBN 140 BallHpt; נָהָר of Nile Isa 19:5 especially of Euphrates נְהַר פְּרָת Gen 15:18; Deut 1:7 (both + הַגָּדוֺל ׳הַנּ) Josh 1:4 + 8 t. + 2Sam 8:3 (Qr ᵐ5 and || 1Chr 18:3 Kt omit פְּרָת; — compare also Gen 2:14b above); oftener (of Euphrase) without ׳הַנָּהָר ׃פ κατ’ ἐξοχήν, Gen 31:21; Exod 23:31; Num 22:5; Josh 24:2; Josh 24:3; Josh 24:14; Josh 24:15 (all E), possibly also Gen 36:37 (P; compare Di) = 1Chr 1:48, + 13 t. + 2Sam 8:3 Kt (see above); and even without article (poetry) Isa 7:20; Jer 2:18; Mic 7:12; Zech 9:10; Ps 72:8 ׳הַגּ ׳הַנּ once of Tigris Dan 10:4 נְהַר גוֺזָן (חבור) 2Kgs 17:6; 2Kgs 18:11 compare 2Chr 5:26 plural נַהֲרֵי בוּשׁ Zeph 3:10 perhaps of a canal: נְהַרכְּֿבָר Ezek 1:1; Ezek 1:3 + 6 t. 2. נְהָרוֺת (מִבְּכִי) Job 28:11 usually understood of (underground) streams; SzoldComm. Job GrMonatsschr.1887, 410 and PerlesAnalekten 69 proposes ׳נ ׳נִבְכֵ sources of rivers (compare Job 36:16); Wetzst Hoffm Bu ׳נ ׳מַבְּכֵ (not elsewhere) with similar meaning.
3. figurative of ׳י s favour Ps 46:5. — On נַהֲרַיִם ending apparently dual, see אֲרַם; Tel Amarna Na-ri-ma, Na—rima (WklTel Am. 40*), and Egyptian Nhrina (WMMAs.u.Eur.249ff.) point however to original ending יִ֯ם; this inconsistent with view of EMeyGeschichte. § 180 that יִַ֯ם here a locative ending (compare Ba§ 194 c. Anm. l BuhlGes 12), see also DiGen 24:10.
