אָחוֺר41 substantive (Arabic ) the hinder side, back part, in the singular, mostly in adverbial phrases: —
\ \ a. as accusative, in poetry backwards 23 t. ( = prose אֲחֹרַנִּית) with verbs such as נָפַל fall Gen 49:17, נָשׂוֺג be turned 2Sam 1:22 (|| תָּשׁוּב רֵיקָם), שׁוּב Ps 9:4; Ps 56:10 +, נָסוֺג Ps 35:4; Ps 40:15 + (of enemies repulsed), Ps 44:19; Isa 50:5 (from obedience to God), נָזוֺר Isa 1:4, הֵשׁיב Isa 44:25; Ps 44:11, הִכָּה Ps 78:66 behind (opposed to קֶדֶם) Ps 139:5; Job 23:8 in the phrase פָּנִים וְאָחוֺר in front and behind 1Chr 19:10 (altered from ׳וּמֵאָ ׳מִפָּ in 2 Samuel see below) 2Chr 13:14; Ezek 2:10.
\ \ b. בְּאָחוֺר Prov 29:11, וְחָכָם בְּאָחוֺר יְשַׁבְּחֶנָּה Ges Hi but a wise man stilleth it (רוּחַ anger) backwards (that is, when it would break forth), De in the background, that is, of his heart (|| כָּלרֿוּחוֺ יוֺצִיא כְסִיל).

\ \ d. מֵאָחוֺר behind (מן = on the side of) 2Sam 10:9 ׳מִפָּנִים וּמֵ in front and behind, Isa 9:11 ׳וּפְלִשְׁתִּים מֵאָ and the Philistines behind (= on the West), opposed to אֲרָם מִקֶּדֶם.
