¹ When he sawe the people, he went vp into a mountaine, and when he was set his disciples came to him, ² and he opened his mouth, and taught them sayinge, ³ blessed are the pore in sprete: for theirs is the kingdom of heauen. ⁴ Blessed are they that morne, for they shalbe comforted. ⁵ Blessed are the meke: for they shall inheret the earth. ⁶ Blessed are they which honger & thurste for rightuousnes: for they shalbe filled. ⁷ Blessed are the mercifull: for they shal obtaine mercy. ⁸ Blessed are the pure in hert: for thei shal se God. ⁹ Blessed are the peace makers: for thei shalbe called the children of God. ¹⁰ Blessed are they which suffer persecucion for rightuousnesse sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heauen: ¹¹ Blessed are ye when men reuile you and persecute you, and shal falsely say al maner of yuel sayinges against you for my sake. ¹² Reioyce & be glad, for great is your reward in heauen. For so persecuted they the prophetes which were before your dayes. ¹³ Ye are the salt of the earth: but & if the salt haue lost her saltnes, what can be salted therwith? It is thensforth good for nothinge, but to be cast out, and to be troden vnder fote of men. ¹⁴ Ye are the light of the worlde. A cytye that is set on an hill, can not be hid, ¹⁵ neither do men light a candell & put it vnder a bushell, but on a candelsticke, and it lighteth al that are in the house. ¹⁶ Let your light so shyne before men that they maye se your good workes, and gloryfye your father which is in heauen. ¹⁷ Thinke not that I am come to destroy the lawe, or the prophetes: no I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfil them. ¹⁸ For truly I say vnto you, til heauen & earth perish, one iote or one title of the lawe shal not escape, til al be fulfilled ¹⁹ Whosoeuer therfore breaketh one of these lest commaundementes, & teacheth men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen. But whosoeuer obserueth & teacheth, the same shal be called great in the kingdom of heauen. ²⁰ For I say vnto you except your rightuousnes excede, the rightuousnes of the scribes & phariseis, ye can not entre into the kingdom of heauen. ²¹ Ye haue heard howe it was said vnto them of the olde time: Thou shalt not kil. For whosoeuer killeth, shal be in daunger of iudgement, ²² but I sai vnto yow, whosoeuer is angre wt his brother without a cause shal be in daunger of iudgement. Whosoeuer saieth to his brother Racha, shalbe in daunger of a counsel. But whosoeuer saieth thou fole, shalbe in daunger of hel fire ²³ Therefore when thou offrest thy gift at the altare, & their remembrest that thy brother hath ought against the: ²⁴ leue there thy offringe before the altare, & go thy way first & be reconciled to thy brother, & then come and offre thy gift. ²⁵ Agre with thine aduersary quickly, whiles thou art in the way wt him, lest the aduersary deliuer the to the iudge, & the iudge deliuer the to the minister, & then thou be cast into prison. ²⁶ I say vnto the verely: thou shalt not come out thence tyl thou haue payed the vttermost farthing. ²⁷ Ye haue heard how it was sayed to them of olde time: Thou shalt not commit adultery. ²⁸ But I saye vnto you, that whosoeuer loketh on a wife, lustinge after her, hath committed adulterye with her alredy in his herte ²⁹ Wherfore if thy ryght eye offende the plucke him out, & cast him from the. Better it is for the that one of thy members perishe, then that thy whol body should be cast into hel. ³⁰ Also if thy right hand offende the, cut him of & cast him from the. And whosoeuer marieth her that is deuorced, breaketh wedlocke. ³³ Agayne ye haue hearde how it was sayed to them of olde time, thou shalt not forsweare thy self, but shalt performe thine othe to God. ³⁴ But I saye vnto you, swere not at al, neither by heauen, for it is Goddes seate: ³⁵ nor yet by the earth, for it is his fotstole: neither by Ierusalem for it is the citye of the great kinge ³⁶ neither shalt thou sweare by thy head, because thou canst not make one whyte hear, or blacke. ³⁷ But your communicacion shalbe, yea, yea: nay, nay. For whatsoeuer is more than that cometh to euell. ³⁸ Ye haue hearde how it is sayed, an eye for an eye: a tothe for a tothe. ³⁹ But I saye to you that ye resyst not wrong. But who soeuer geue the a blowe on the right cheke, tourne to hym the other. ⁴⁰ And if anye man wyll sue the at the lawe, and take awaye thy coote, let hym haue thy clooke also. ⁴¹ And whosoeuer wyll compell the to goo a myle, goo with hym twaine. ⁴² Geue to hym that axeth, & from him that woulde borow tourne not away. ⁴³ Ye haue hearde how it is said: thou shalt loue thy neighbour, and hate thyne enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say vnto you loue your enemies. Blesse theim that cursse you. Do good to them that hate you. Pray for them which doo you wronge and persecute you, ⁴⁵ that ye may be the chyldren of youre father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sonne to aryse on the yuyll, and on the good and sendeth his raine on the iust and vniust. ⁴⁶ For if ye loue them, whiche loue you: what rewarde shall ye haue? Doo not the publicanes euen so? ⁴⁷ And if ye be frendly to your brethren only what synguler thinge doo ye? Do not the publycanes likewyses? ⁴⁸ Ye shall therfore be perfect, euen as your father which is in heauen, is perfect.

³⁰ Iesus aunswered, and sayde: A certayne man descended from Ierusalem into Hierico, and fell into the handes of theues, which robbed hym of hys rayment, and wounded him, and departed leuynge him halfe dead. ³¹ And by chance there came a certayne priest that same waye, and when he sawe hym, he passed by. ³² And lykewyse a Leuite, when he was come nye to the place, went and loked on hym, and passed by. ³³ Then a certayne Samaritayne, as he iournyed, came nye vnto hym, and when he sawe hym, he had compassion on hym, ³⁴ and went to, and bounde vp hys woundes, & poureth in oyle and wyne, and put hym on hys owne beaste, and broughte him to a common ynne, and made prouysion for him. ³⁵ And on the morowe when he departed, he toke oute two pence, and gaue them to the hoste, and sayde vnto hym: Take cure of him, and whatsoeuer thou spendest more, when I come agayne, I wyll recompence the. ³⁶ Whiche nowe of these thre thinkest thou, was neyghboure vnto him that fell into the theues handes? ³⁷ And he sayd: he that shewed mercy on hym. Then sayd Iesus vnto hym: Go, & do thou lykewyse.

⁹ For yf thou shalt knoweledge with thy mouthe that Iesus is the Lorde, and shalte beleue with thyne herte that God raysed hym vp from death, thou shalte be safe.

¹⁰ Whatsoeuer thou takest in hande to do, that do wyth all thy power: for among the dead, wher as thou goest vnto, ther is nether worcke, councel, knowledge ner wysdome.

²¹ for somuch as a man shuld weery hym selfe with wisdome, wt vnderstanding & oportunyte & yet be faine to leaue his laboures vnto another, that neuer swet. for them. This is also a vayne thinge and a greate miserie.

¹¹ and that ye studye to be quyete, and to medle with youre owne busines, and to worke wyth youre owne handes, as we commaunded you: ¹² that ye may behaue your selues honestly towardes them that are wythout, and that nothinge be lackinge vnto you.

¹⁰ For when we were with you thys we warned you of, that yf there were any whiche woulde not worke, that the same shoulde not eate.

⁸ Yf there be anye that prouideth not for hys owne, & namely for them of hys housholde the same denyeth the fayth, & is worsse then an infydele.

²³ And what soeuer ye do, do it hertelye as though ye dyd it to the Lord, and not vnto men
