¹⁰⁵ Nun. Thy woorde is a lanterne vnto my fete and a light vnto my pathes.

¹⁶ Beholde I sende you forth as shepe among wolues. Be ye therfore wyse as serpentes, and innocent as doues.

⁷ He put forth a similitude to the gestes, when he marked howe they preased to the hyest roumes, and sayed vnto them: ⁸ When thou arte bydden to a weddynge of anye man, sit not downe in the hyest roume, least a more honorable man then thou be bydden of hym, ⁹ & he that bade both hym and the, come and saye to the: geue thys man roume, and thou then begynne with shame to take the lowest roume. ¹⁰ But rather when thou arte bydden, go and sit in the lowest roume, that when he that bade the, commeth, he maye saye vnto the frende sit vp hyer. Then shalte thou haue worshyppe in the preseuce of them that sitte at meat with the. ¹¹ For whosoeuer exalteth him selfe, shalbe broughte lowe. And he that humbleth him selfe, shalbe exalted.

¹ Then spake Iesus to the people, & to hys disciples ² sayinge: The Scribes and the Phariseis sit in Moyses seate. ³ All therfore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and do, but after their workes do not, ⁴ for they say and do not. Yea, and they bynd heauy burthens and greuous to be borne and lay them on mens shoulders: but they them selfs will not heaue at them with one of theyr fyngers. ⁵ All their workes thei do for to be sene of men. They set abroade theyr philateries, & make large borders on theyr garmentes, ⁶ and loue to sit vppermoste at feastes, and to haue the chiefe seates in the Synagoges, ⁷ and gretynges in the markettes, and too be called of men Rabbi. ⁸ But ye shall not suffer youre selues to be called Rabbi. For one is your master, that is to witte Christ, and all ye are brethreu. ⁹ And call no man your father vpon the earth, for there is but one your father, & he is in heauen. ¹⁰ Be not called masters: for there is but one your master: and he is Christ. ¹¹ He that is greatest amonge you: shalbe your seruaunt. ¹² But whosoeuer exalteth hym selfe: shalbe brought lowe, and he that humbleth hym selfe, shalbe exalted. ¹³ Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, for ye shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: ye youre selues go not in, neyther suffer ye them that come to enter in. ¹⁴ Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, ye deuoure wyddowes houses, & that vnder a coloure of praieng long prayers wherfore ye shall receyue great damnacion. ¹⁵ Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrites: which compasse sea and lande, to brynge one into youre belefe: and when he is brought ye make hym two folde more the chyld of hell: then ye your selues are. ¹⁶ Wo be vnto you blynde guydes, whyche say whosoeuer sweare by the temple, it is nothing, but whosoeuer sweared by the golde of the temple: he offendeth. ¹⁷ Ye fooles and blind, whither is greater, the golde, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? ¹⁸ And whosoeuer sweareth by the aultare, it is nothynge: but whosoeuer sweareth by the offeryng that lyeth on the aulter, offendeth. ¹⁹ Ye fooles and blynde, whither is greater the offerynge, or the aulter whiche sanctifieth the offeryng? ²⁰ Whosoeuer therfore sweareth by the aultare, sweareth by it and by all that thereon is. ²¹ And whosoeuer sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by hym that dwelleth therin. ²² And he that sweareth by heauen sweareth by the seate of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. ²³ Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, which tythe mynte, anyse and commen, and leaue the wayghtyer matters of the lawe vndone: iudgement, mercy, and faythe. These ought ye to haue done, and not to haue lefte the other vndone. ²⁴ Ye blynde guydes whiche strayne out a gnat, and swallowe a cammell. ²⁵ Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises hypocrites, which make cleane the vtter side of the cuppe, & of the platter: but within they are ful of bribery and excesse. ²⁶ Thou blynd Pharisei, clense first the ynneside of the cup & platter, that the outside of them may be clene also. ²⁷ Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrytes, for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes, whiche appeare beautifull outwarde, but are within full of dead bones and of all filthines. ²⁸ So are ye, for outwarde ye apeare righteouse vnto men, when within, ye are full of hypocresie and iniquitie. ²⁹ Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrites, ye buylde the tombes of the Prophetes and garnysh the sepulchres of the righteouse, ³⁰ and saye: if we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we woulde not haue bene parteners with them in the bloude of the Prophetes. ³¹ So then ye be witnesses to your selues, that ye are the chyldren of them whyche kylled the Prophetes. ³² Fulfil ye likewyse the measure of your fathers. ³³ Ye serpentes and generacion of vppers howe shoulde ye scape the damnacion of hell? ³⁴ Wherfore, behold I send vnto you Prophetes, wise men, & Scribes. Of them ye shal kyl and crucifye: and of them ye shall scourge in your synagoges, and persecute from citye to citye ³⁵ that vpon you may come all the ryghtuous bloude that was shede vpon the earth, from the bloude of ryghtuous Abel, vnto the bloude of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whom ye slewe betwene the tempel and the aulter. ³⁶ Verely I say vnto you, al these things shall lyght vpon this generation. ³⁷ Ierusalem, Ierusalem which killest prophetes, and stone them which are sent to the: howe often would I haue gathered thy children together: as the henne gathered her chikens vnder her winges, but ye would not. ³⁸ Beholde your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate. ³⁹ For I saye to you, ye shall not se me hence forth tyll that ye saye blessed is he that commeth in the name of the Lorde.

¹ Then the kingdome of heauen shalbe lykened vnto ten virgins, which toke their lampes and went to mete the bridegrom, ² Fyue of them were folyshe, & fyue were wise. ³ The folyshe toke theyr lampes, but toke none oyle with them. ⁴ But the wise toke oyle with them in their vessels with their lampes also. ⁵ Whyle the brydegrome taried, al slombred and slepte. ⁶ And euen at midnight there was a crye made: beholde, the brydegrome cometh, goo out againste hym. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and prepared their lampes. ⁸ And the folishe sayed to the wise: gyue vs of your oyle for oure lampes go out. ⁹ But the wyse aunswered sayinge not so, least there be not ynough for vs and you: but go rather to them that sell & by for your selues. ¹⁰ And whyle they went to bye the brydegrome came: and they that were redie, went in wyth hym to the weddinge, and the gate was shut vp. ¹¹ Afterwardes cam also the other virgins sayinge: maister maister, open to vs. ¹² But he aunswered and sayd: verely I say vnto you: I knowe not you ¹³ watche therfore: for ye knowe neither the daye nor yet the houre when the sonne of man shall come. ¹⁴ Lykewyse as a certayne man, redye to take iorney to a straunge countre, called hys seruauntes and delyuered to them his goodes. ¹⁵ And vnto one he gaue fyue talentes, to another .ij. and to another one: to euery man after his abylite, and straight waye departed. ¹⁶ Then he that had receyued the .v. talentes, went and bestowed them and wan other fyue talentes. ¹⁷ Likewise he that receiued two, gained other two. ¹⁸ But he that receiued the one, wente and digged a pit in the earth and hid his maisters money. ¹⁹ After a longe season the Lorde of those seruauntes came and rekened with them. ²⁰ Then came he that had receyued .v. talentes, and brought other .v. talentes, sayinge: maister thou delyuerest vnto me fyue talentes beholde I haue gained with them fyue talentes mo. ²¹ Then his maister sayde vnto him: Well good seruaunt and faithfull. Thou hast bene faythfull in litle, I wyll make the rueler ouer muche enter in into thy maisters ioye. ²² Also he that receiued .ij. talentes, came and sayed mayster thou deliuerest vnto me twoo talentes, beholde I haue won two other talentes with them. ²³ And his maister sayde vnto hym, well good seruaunt and faithfull. Thou hast bene faithfull in litle, I wyll make the ruler ouer much: go in into thy maisters ioye. ²⁴ Then he which had receiued the one talent, came & sayde, maister, I consydered that thou waste an harde man, which repest were thou sowest not, & gadderest where thou strawest not, ²⁵ and was therfore afraide, and went and hid thy talente in the earth: beholde, thou hast thyne owne. ²⁶ His maister aunswered and said vnto hym: thou euyll seruaunte and slouthful, thou knewest that I repe wher I sowed not, and gadder wher I strawed not: ²⁷ thou oughtest therfore to haue had my money to the chaungers, then at my commynge shoulde I haue receyued myne owne with vauntage. ²⁸ Take therfore the talent from him, and giue it vnto him which hath ten talentes. ²⁹ For vnto euerye man that hathe shalbe geuen, and he shall haue aboundaunce, and from hym that hath not, shall be taken awaye, euen that he hath. ³⁰ And caste that vnprofytable seruaunt into vtter darcknes: there shalbe wepinge & gnashinge of tethe. ³¹ When the sonne of man cometh in hys glorye, and all the holye aungels with him, then shall he sytte vpon the seate of his glory, ³² and before him shall be gathered all nations, and he shall separate them one from another, as a shephearde deuideth the shepe from the gootes. ³³ And he shall set the shepe on his right haude, and the gootes on his lyfte. ³⁴ Then shal the kinge saye to them on his right hand. Come ye blessed chyldren of my father, enheryte ye the kingdome prepared for you from the begynninge of the worlde. ³⁵ For I was an hungred & ye gaue me meate. I thirsted and ye gaue me drinke. I was herbourles and ye lodged me. I was naked and ye clothed me. ³⁶ I was sycke and ye visyted me. I was in pryson and ye came vnto me. ³⁷ Then shal the rightuous aunswere him sayinge, maister, when sawe we the an houngred, & fede the, or a thyrst, & gaue the drinke ³⁸ when sawe we the herborles, and lodged the? or naked and clothed the? ³⁹ or when sawe we the syke or in pryson and came vnto the? ⁴⁰ And the kinge shall aunswere and saye vnto theym: verelye I saye vnto you: in as much as ye haue done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye haue done it vnto me. ⁴¹ Then shall the kinge saye vnto them that shalbe on the lyfte hande. Departe from me ye cursed, into euerlastinge fyre, which is prepared for the deuyll and hys angels. ⁴² For I was an hungred and ye gaue me no meate, I thyrsted and ye gaue me no drynke, ⁴³ I was herbourles, and ye lodged me not, I was naked and ye clothed me not, I was sicke and in pryson, and ye vysited me not. ⁴⁴ Then shal they answere him, sayinge: mayster when sawe we the an hungred, or a thyrst or herbourles, or naked, or sicke, or in pryson, and dyd not minister vnto the. ⁴⁵ Then shall he answere them, and saye: Verelye I saye vnto you, in as much as ye dyd it not to one of these little ones: ye dyd it not vnto me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go into euerlasting payne. And the righteouse into lyfe eternall.

¹⁹ Derely beloued auenge not youre selues, but geue roume vnto the wrathe of God. For it is wrytten: vengeaunce is myne, and I wyll rewarde sayeth the Lorde.

¹⁶ And we haue knowen & beleued the loue that God hath to vs. God is loue, and he that dwelleth in loue, dwelleth in God, and god in hym.

¹ A wyse sonne wyll receaue hys fathers warnynge, but he that is scornefull, wyl not heare when he is reproued. ² A good man shall enioye the fruite of hys mouth, but he that hath a froward mind shalbe spoyled. ³ He that kepeth his mouth, kepeth his lyfe: but who so speaketh vnaduised findeth harme. ⁴ The slogarde woulde fayne haue, and can not get his dsyre: but the soule of the diligente shall haue plenty. ⁵ A ryghtuous man abhorreth lyes, but the vngodlye shameth both other and hym selfe. ⁶ Ryghtuousnesse kepeth the innocente in the waye, but vngodlynesse shal ouerthrow the sinner. ⁷ Some men are rych, thoughe they haue nothynge: againe some men are pore hauing greate ryches. ⁸ With goodes euery man deliuereth his lyfe, and the poore wyll not be reproued. ⁹ The lyght of the rightuous maketh ioyfull, but the candle of the vngodly shalbe put out. ¹⁰ Among the proud ther is euer strife, but amonge those that do all thynges wyth aduysemente, ther is wysdome. ¹¹ Hastely gotten goodes are sone spent, but they that be gathered together with the hand, shall increase ¹² Longe taryenge for a thing that is differed, greueth the hert: but when the desyre commeth, it is a tre of lyfe. ¹³ Who so despiseth the word destroyeth hym selfe: but he that feareth the commaundemente shal haue peace. ¹⁴ The law is a wel of life vnto the wise, that it may kepe him from the snares of death, ¹⁵ Good vnderstanding geueth fauour, but hard is the way of the despisers. ¹⁶ A wyse man doth al thinges with dyscrecyon, but a foole wyl declare his folly. ¹⁷ An vngodly messanger bryngeth myschyefe, but a faythfull embassytour is wholsome. ¹⁸ He that thynketh scorne to be refourmed, commeth to pouertie & shame: but who so receaueth correction, shal come to honou ¹⁹ When a desyre, is brought to passe, it delyteth the soule: but fooles abhorre him that eschueth euell. ²⁰ He that goeth in the company of wyse men, shalbe wyse: but who so is a companyon of foles, shalbe hurte. ²¹ Mischefe foloweth vpon synners, but the ryghtuous shal haue a god reward. ²² Which their chylders chyldren shal haue in possession, for the riches of the synner is layed vp for the iuste. ²³ Ther is plentuousnesse of fode in the feldes of the pore, and shalbe increased out of measure. ²⁴ He that spareth the rod, hateth hys son: but who so loueth hym, holdeth hym euer in nurtoure. ²⁵ The ryghtuous eateth, and is satisfied, but the belly of the vngodly hath neuer ynough.

¹ For the kyngedom of heauen is lyke vnto an housholder, which went out early in the mornynge to hyre labourers into hys vyneyarde. ² And he agreed with the labourers for a peny a daye, and sent them into hys vyneyarde. ³ And he went out about the .iij. houre, and saw other standing ydel in the market place, ⁴ and sayd vnto them, go ye also into my vineyard: and whatsoeuer is right, I wil geue you. And they went theyr waye. ⁵ Agayn he went out about the sixt and nynth houre and did likewise. ⁶ And he went out about the eleuenth houre, and founde other standynge ydel, and sayde vnto theim: Why stande ye here all the day ydell? ⁷ They sayde vnto hym: because no man hath hyred vs. He sayde to them go ye also into my vyneyarde, & whatsoeuer is right, that shall ye receyue. ⁸ When euen was come, the Lorde of the vineyarde sayde vnto hys Stewarde: call the labourers, and geue them their hyer, beginning at the laste, tyll thou come to the first. ⁹ And they whiche were hyred about the eleuenth houre, came and receyued euery man a peny. ¹⁰ Then came the first, supposing that they should receyue more, and they lykewise receyued euery man a peny. ¹¹ And when they had receyued it, they murmured agaynst the good man of the house ¹² saying: These laste haue wrought but one houre, and thou haste made theym equall vnto vs whiche haue borne the burthen, and heat of the daye. ¹³ He aunswered to one of them, saying: frende I do the no wrong: diddest thou not agre with me for a peny? ¹⁴ Take that which is thy duety, and go thy waye, I will geue vnto thys laste as muche as to the. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do as me lusteth with myne owne? Is thyne eye euel because I am good? ¹⁶ So the laste shalbe firste, and the first shalbe laste. For many are called, and few be chosen.

¹⁸ The spyryte of the Lorde vpon me, because he hath anointed me: to preache the gospell to the poore he hath sent me, and to heale the broken herted, to preache deliueraunce to the captiue, and syght to the blynde, and frely to set at lyberte them that are brused,

⁸ Yf there be anye that prouideth not for hys owne, & namely for them of hys housholde the same denyeth the fayth, & is worsse then an infydele.

¹ I therfore whiche am in boundes for the Lordes sake, exhorte you, that ye walke worthy of the vocation wherwyth ye are called, ² in all humblenes of mynde, and mekenes, and longe sufferynge, forbearinge one another thorowe loue, ³ and that ye be diligente to kepe the vnitie of the spirite in the bounde of peace, ⁴ beynge one bodye, & one spirite, euen as ye are called in one hope of your callinge. ⁵ Let there be but one Lorde, one fayth, one baptysme, ⁶ one God and father of all, whiche is aboue al thorowe all and in you all. ⁷ Vnto euery one of vs is geuen grace accordinge to the measure of the gyfte of Christ. ⁸ Wherfore he sayth: He is gone vp on hye, and had led captiuitie captiue, and hath geuen gyftes vnto men. ⁹ That he ascended, what meaneth it, but that he also descended fyrste into the loweste parties of the earth? ¹⁰ He that descended, is euen the same also that ascended vp euen aboue all heauens, to fulfyll al thinges. ¹¹ And the very same made some Apostles, some Prophetes, some Euangelistes, some sheperdes, some teachers, ¹² that the saynctes myghte haue all thinges necessarye to worke and ministre wythal, to the edifiynge of the bodye of Christ, ¹³ tyl we euerie one (in the vnitie of fayth, and knowledge of the sonne of God) growe vp into a perfecte man, after the measure of age of the fulnes of Christ. ¹⁴ That we henceforth be no more chyldren, waueringe and caryed wyth euerye wynde of doctryne, by the wylynes of men and craftynes, wherby they laye awayte for vs to deceyue vs. ¹⁵ But let vs folowe the truethe in loue, and in al thinges growe in him which is the head, that is to saye, Christe, ¹⁶ in whom all the body is coupled and knyt together in euerye ioynt, wherwyth one ministreth to another (accordynge to the operation, as euerye parte hath hys measure) and encreaseth the bodye, vnto the edifiynge of it selfe in loue. ¹⁷ Thys I saye therfore and testifye in the Lorde, that ye henceforth walke not as other Gentyles walke, in vanitie of theyr mynde, ¹⁸ blynded in theyr vnderstandynge, beynge straungers from the lyfe whiche is in God thorowe the ignoraunce that is in them, because of the blyndnes of theyr hertes: ¹⁹ whiche beyng paste repentaunce, haue geuen them selues vnto wantonnes, to worke al maner of vncleanes, euen wyth gredines. ²⁰ But ye haue not so learned Christ, ²¹ yf so be ye haue heard of hym, and are taughte of hym, euen as the trueth is in Iesu. ²² So then as concernyng the conuersacyon in tyme past, laye from you that olde man, whyche is corrupte thorowe the deceyueable lustes ²³ and be ye renued in the spyrite of your mindes, ²⁴ and put on that newe man, whyche after the Image of God is shapen in ryghteousnes & true holynes. ²⁵ Wherfore put awaye lyinge, and speake euerye man trueth vnto hys neyghboure, for as muche as we are membres one of another. ²⁶ Be angrye, but synne not, let not the sunne go doune vpon your wrath, ²⁷ neyther geue place vnto the backebyter. ²⁸ Let hym that stole, steale no more, but let hym rather laboure wyth his handes some good thynge, that he maye haue to geue vnto hym that nedeth. ²⁹ Let no fylthy communication procede out of your mouthes: but that whiche is good to edefye wyth all, when nede is: that it maye haue fauoure with the hearers. ³⁰ And greue not the holye spirite of God, by whom ye are sealed vnto the daye of redemption. ³¹ Let all bitternes, fearsnes and wrath, roring and cursed speakinge, be put awaye from you, wyth all maliciousnes. ³² Be ye courteouse one to another and mercyfull, forgeuynge one another, euen as God for Christes sake forgaue you.

¹² Them that are suche we commaunde and exhorte by oure Lorde Iesu Christe, that they worke wyth quietnes, and eate theyr owne breade.

⁶ but geueth more grace.

¹⁰ For when we were with you thys we warned you of, that yf there were any whiche woulde not worke, that the same shoulde not eate.

¹ From whence commeth warre & fyghtynge amonge you: come they not hear hence? euen of your voluptuousnes, that rayne in youre membres. ² Ye luste & haue not. Ye enuye and haue dignacyon, and cannot obtayne. Ye fyght and war and haue not, because ye axe not. ³ Ye axe and receyue not, because ye axe a mysse: euen to consume it vpon youre voluptuousnes ⁴ Ye aduouterers, & women that breake matrimonye: knowe ye not, how that the frendeshyppe of the worlde is enmitie to God warde? Who so euer wyl be a frende of the worlde, is made the enemy of God. ⁵ Eyther do ye thynke that the scrypture sayeth in vayne. The spyryte that dwelleth in you lusteth euen contrarye to enuye: ⁶ but geueth more grace. ⁷ Submytte your selues to God, and resiste the deuyl, and he wyll flye from you. ⁸ Drawe nye to God, and he wyll drawe nye to you. Clense youre handes ye synners, and purge youre hertes ye wauerynge mynded. ⁹ Suffer afflictyons: sorowe ye and wepe. Let youre laughter be turned to mornynge and youre ioye to heauynes. ¹⁰ Cast doune your selues before the Lorde, and he shal lyfte you vp. ¹¹ Back byte not one another, brethren. He that backbyteth hys brother, and he that iudgeth hys brother, backbyteth the lawe, and iudgeth the lawe. But and yf thou iudge the law, thou art not an obseruer of the law, but a iudge. ¹² There is one law geuer, which is able to saue & to destroy. What arte thou that iudgest another man?
