¹ The Seventh DayWith this the heavens and the earth were completed, including all of their vast array. ² By the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing, so on the seventh day he stopped working on everything that he had done. ³ Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God stopped working on everything that he had been creating.
⁴ Humans in the GardenThese are the records of the universe at its creation. On the day that the LORD God made the earth and skies, ⁵ no shrubs had yet grown in the meadows of the earth and no vegetation had sprouted, because the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there were no human beings to work the ground. ⁶ Instead, an underground stream would arise out of the earth and water the surface of the ground. ⁷ So the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground, breathed life into his lungs, and the man became a living being.
⁸ The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, where he placed the man whom he had formed. ⁹ The LORD God caused every tree that is both beautiful and suitable for food to spring up out of the ground. The tree of life was also in the middle of the garden, along with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. ¹⁰ A river flows from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides, becoming four branches. ¹¹ The name of the first one is Pishon—it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. ¹² The gold of that land is pure; bdellium and onyx are also found there. ¹³ The name of the second river is Gihon— it winds through the entire land of Cush. ¹⁴ The third river is named the Tigris— it flows to the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
¹⁵ The LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden in order to have him work it and guard it. ¹⁶ The LORD God commanded the man: “You may freely eat from every tree of the garden, ¹⁷ but you are not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because you will certainly die during the day that you eat from it.”
¹⁸ The Creation of the WomanLater, the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make the woman to be an authority corresponding to him.” ¹⁹ After the LORD God formed from the ground every wild animal and every bird that flies, he brought each of them to the man to see what he would call it. Whatever the man called each living creature became its name. ²⁰ The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds that fly, and to each of earth’s animals, but there was not found a strength corresponding to him, ²¹ so the LORD God caused a deep sleep to overshadow the man.
When the man was asleep, he removed one of the man’s ribs and closed up the flesh where it had been. ²² Then the LORD God formed the rib that he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. ²³ So the man exclaimed, “At last! This is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh. This one will be called ‘Woman,’ because she was taken from Man.”
²⁴ (Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife, and they will become one flesh.) ²⁵ Even though both the man and his wife were naked, they were not ashamed about it.

²⁶ Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, to be like us. Let them be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, the livestock, everything that crawls on the earth, and over the earth itself!” ²⁷ So God created mankind in his own image; in his own image God created them; he created them male and female.
²⁸ God blessed the humans by saying to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it! Be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, and every living thing that crawls on the earth!”

¹ The CreationIn the beginning, God created the universe. ² When the earth was as yet unformed and desolate, with the surface of the ocean depths shrouded in darkness, and while the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters, ³ God said, “Let there be light!” So there was light.
⁴ God saw that the light was beautiful. He separated the light from the darkness, ⁵ calling the light “day,” and the darkness “night.” The twilight and the dawn were day one.
⁶ Then God said, “Let there be a canopy between bodies of water, separating bodies of water from bodies of water!” ⁷ So God made a canopy that separated the water beneath the canopy from the water above it. And that is what happened: ⁸ God called the canopy “sky.” The twilight and the dawn were the second day.
⁹ Then God said, “Let the water beneath the sky come together into one area, and let dry ground appear!” And that is what happened: ¹⁰ God called the dry ground “land,” and he called the water that had come together “oceans.” And God saw how good it was.
¹¹ Then God said, “Let vegetation sprout all over the earth, including seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each kind containing its own seed!” And that is what happened: ¹² Vegetation sprouted all over the earth, including seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each kind containing its own seed. And God saw that it was good. ¹³ The twilight and the dawn were the third day.
¹⁴ Then God said, “Let there be lights across the sky to distinguish day from night, to act as signs for seasons, days, and years, ¹⁵ to serve as lights in the sky, and to shine on the earth!” And that is what happened: ¹⁶ God fashioned two great lights—the larger light to shine during the day and the smaller light to shine during the night—as well as stars. ¹⁷ God placed them in space to shine on the earth, ¹⁸ to differentiate between day and night, and to distinguish light from darkness. And God saw how good it was. ¹⁹ The twilight and the dawn were the fourth day.
²⁰ Then God said, “Let the oceans swarm with living creatures, and let flying creatures soar above the earth throughout the sky!” ²¹ So God created every kind of magnificent marine creature, every kind of living marine crawler with which the waters swarmed, and every kind of flying creature. And God saw how good it was. ²² God blessed them by saying, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the oceans. Let the birds multiply throughout the earth!” ²³ The twilight and the dawn were the fifth day.
²⁴ Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth each kind of living creature, each kind of livestock and crawling thing, and each kind of earth’s animals!” And that is what happened: ²⁵ God made each kind of the earth’s animals, along with every kind of livestock and crawling thing. And God saw how good it was.
²⁶ Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, to be like us. Let them be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, the livestock, everything that crawls on the earth, and over the earth itself!” ²⁷ So God created mankind in his own image; in his own image God created them; he created them male and female.
²⁸ God blessed the humans by saying to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it! Be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, and every living thing that crawls on the earth!”
²⁹ God also told them, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant that grows throughout the earth, along with every tree that grows seed-bearing fruit. They will produce your food. ³⁰ I have given all green plants as food for every wild animal of the earth, every bird that flies, and to every living thing that crawls on the earth.” And that is what happened.
³¹ Now God saw all that he had made, and indeed, it was very good! The twilight and the dawn were the sixth day.

A Song for the King of Glory The earth and everything in it exists for the LORD— the world and those who live in it.

¹⁴ I praise you, because you are fearful and wondrous! Your work is wonderful, and I am fully aware of it.

⁹ But as it is written, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love him.”

¹ The CreationIn the beginning, God created the universe.

² He causes me to lie down in pastures of green grass; he guides me beside quiet waters. ³ He revives my life; he leads me in pathways that are righteous for the sake of his name.

⁷ Wisdom Can Be Found in God’s Creation“Ask the wild animals, and they’ll teach you; the birds of the sky will tell you. ⁸ Or ask the green plants of the earth and they’ll teach you; let the fish in the sea tell you. ⁹ Who among all of these doesn’t know that the LORD’s hand made them,

²⁶ “Lift your eyes up to heaven and see who created all these— the one who leads out their vast array of stars by number, calling them all by name— because of his great might and his powerful strength— and not one is missing.”

¹⁷ A New UniverseTake notice! I’m about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things won’t be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

² From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shined forth.

¹¹ He made everything appropriate in its time. He also placed eternity within them—yet, no person can fully comprehend what God is doing from beginning to end.

²⁰ For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and observed by what he made, so that people are without excuse.

Praise God, who Creates Bless the LORD, my soul; LORD, my God, you are very great. You are clothed in splendor and majesty; ² you are wrapped in light like a garment, stretching out the sky like a curtain. ³ He lays the beams of his roof loft on the water above, making clouds his chariot, walking on the wings of the wind. ⁴ He makes the winds his messengers, blazing fires his servants. ⁵ He established the earth on its foundations, so that it never falters. ⁶ You covered the primeval ocean like a garment; the water stood above the mountains. ⁷ They flee at your rebuke; they rush away at the sound of your thunders. ⁸ Mountains rise up and valleys sink to the place you have ordained for them. ⁹ You have set a boundary they cannot cross; they will never again cover the earth. ¹⁰ He causes springs to gush forth into rivers that flow between the mountains. ¹¹ They give water for animals of the field to drink; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. ¹² Birds of the sky live beside them and chirp a song among the foliage. ¹³ He waters the mountains from his heavenly rooms; the earth is satisfied from the fruit of your work. ¹⁴ He causes grass to sprout for the cattle and plants for people to cultivate, to produce food from the land, ¹⁵ like wine that makes the heart of people happy, oil that makes the face glow, and food that sustains people. ¹⁶ The loftiest trees are satisfied, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted, ¹⁷ the birds build their nests there, and the heron builds its nest among the evergreen. ¹⁸ The high mountains are for wild goats; the cliffs are a refuge for the rock badger. ¹⁹ He made the moon to mark time; the sun knows its setting time. ²⁰ You bring darkness and it becomes night; when every beast of the forest prowls. ²¹ Young lions roar for prey, seeking their food from God. ²² When the sun rises, they gather and lie down in their dens. ²³ People go out to their work and labor until evening. ²⁴ How numerous are your works, LORD! You have made them all wisely; the earth is filled with your creations. ²⁵ There is the deep and wide sea, teeming with numberless creatures, living things small and great. ²⁶ There, the ships pass through; Leviathan, which you created, frolics in it. ²⁷ All of them look to you to provide them their food at the proper time. ²⁸ They receive what you give them; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. ²⁹ When you withdraw your favor, they are disappointed; Take away their breath, and they die and return to dust. ³⁰ When you send your spirit, they are created, and you replenish the surface of the earth. ³¹ May the glory of the LORD last forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works! ³² He looks at the earth and it shakes; he touches the mountains and they smoke. ³³ I will sing to the LORD with my whole being; I will sing to my God continually! ³⁴ May my thoughts be pleasing to him; indeed, I will rejoice in the LORD! ³⁵ May sinners disappear from the land and the wicked live no longer. Bless the LORD, my soul! Hallelujah!

God’s Revelation in the Heavens The heavens are declaring the glory of God, and their expanse shows the work of his hands.

¹⁶ For by him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether they are kings, lords, rulers, or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. ¹⁷ He himself existed before anything else did, and he holds all things together.
