¹⁶ and one of you says to him, "Blessings on you, keep warm, eat until you have aplenty," without giving him the things that are needed for the body, what good does it do?

¹⁵ But when it was evening, His disciples came to Him and said, "This is a destitute place, and the day is over; send the crowds off to the villages to buy themselves food." ¹⁶ But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to leave here; give them something to eat yourselves."

³² Then Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, for it is now three days they have been staying with me, and they have nothing at all left to eat, and I fear they might give out on the way home."

⁴² For when I was hungry you gave me nothing to eat, when I was thirsty you gave me nothing to drink, ⁴³ when I was a stranger you did not welcome me to your homes, when I needed clothes you did not put them on me, when I was sick and in prison, you did not look after me.' ⁴⁴ Then they will answer, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or needing clothes, or sick, or in prison, and did not wait on you?' ⁴⁵ Then He will answer, 'I solemnly say to you, every time you failed to do a good deed to one of these most insignificant people, you failed to do a good deed to me.'

⁹ Your love must be true. You must always turn in horror from what is wrong, but keep on holding to what is right.

⁸ I am not saying this in the spirit of a command, but I am simply trying to test the genuineness of your love by the enthusiasm of others.

¹⁶ We know what love is from the fact that He laid down His life for us; and so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. ¹⁷ But if anyone has the world's means of supporting life and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how can love to God remain in him? ¹⁸ Dear children, let us stop loving with words or lips alone, but let us love with actions and in truth.
