¹ And in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar -- Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene -- ² Annas and Caiaphas being chief priests -- there came a word of God unto John the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness, ³ and he came to all the region round the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation -- to remission of sins, ⁴ as it has been written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, 'A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, straight make you His paths; ⁵ every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straightness, and the rough become smooth ways; ⁶ and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.' ⁷ Then said he to the multitudes coming forth to be baptized by him, 'Brood of vipers! who did prompt you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸ make, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have a father -- Abraham; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham; ⁹ and already also the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut down, and to fire it is cast.' ¹⁰ And the multitudes were questioning him, saying, 'What, then, shall we do?' ¹¹ and he answering said to them, 'He having two coats -- let him impart to him having none, and he having victuals -- in like manner let him do.' ¹² And there came also tax-gatherers to be baptized, and they said unto him, 'Teacher, what shall we do?' ¹³ and he said unto them, 'Exact no more than that directed you.' ¹⁴ And questioning him also were those warring, saying, 'And we, what shall we do?' and he said unto them, 'Do violence to no one, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.' ¹⁵ And the people are looking forward, and all are reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether or not he may be the Christ; ¹⁶ John answered, saying to all, 'I indeed with water do baptize you, but he comes who is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to loose the latchet of his sandals -- he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire; ¹⁷ whose winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat to his storehouse, and the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.' ¹⁸ And, therefore, indeed with many other things, exhorting, he was proclaiming good news to the people, ¹⁹ and Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, and concerning all the evils that Herod did, ²⁰ added also this to all, that he shut up John in the prison. ²¹ And it came to pass, in all the people being baptized, Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, ²² and the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily appearance, as if a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, 'You are My Son -- the Beloved, in you I did delight.' ²³ And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, son of Joseph, ²⁴ the son of Eli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, ²⁵ the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Naum, the son of Esli, ²⁶ the son of Naggai, the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Juda, ²⁷ the son of Joanna, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, ²⁸ the son of Neri, the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, ²⁹ the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, ³⁰ the son of Levi, the son of Simeon, the son of Juda, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, ³¹ the son of Melea, the son of Mainan, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, ³² the son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Booz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, ³³ the son of Amminadab, the son of Aram, the son of Esrom, the son of Pharez, ³⁴ the son of Judah, the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, ³⁵ the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, ³⁶ the son of Salah, the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, ³⁷ the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, ³⁸ the son of Cainan, the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

¹ At that time did Herod the tetrarch hear the fame of Jesus,

³ For Herod having laid hold on John, did bind him, and did put him in prison, because of Herodias his brother Philip's wife,

² and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.

¹⁷ For Herod himself, having sent forth, did lay hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her,

¹ And it came to pass in those days, there went forth a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world be enrolled --

¹⁹ and Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, and concerning all the evils that Herod did,

⁷ And Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things being done by him, and was perplexed, because it was said by certain, that John has been raised out of the dead;

¹ And having risen, the whole multitude of them did lead him to Pilate, ² and began to accuse him, saying, 'This one we found perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying himself to be Christ a king.' ³ And Pilate questioned him, saying, 'You are the king of the Jews?' and he answering him, said, 'You do say it.' ⁴ And Pilate said unto the chief priests, and the multitude, 'I find no fault in this man;'

⁶ And Pilate having heard of Galilee, questioned if the man is a Galilean, ⁷ and having known that he is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him back unto Herod, he being also in Jerusalem in those days. ⁸ And Herod having seen Jesus did rejoice exceedingly, for he was wishing for a long time to see him, because of hearing many things about him, and he was hoping some sign to see done by him, ⁹ and was questioning him in many words, and he answered him nothing. ¹⁰ And the chief priests and the scribes stood vehemently accusing him, ¹¹ and Herod with his soldiers having set him at nought, and having mocked, having put around him gorgeous apparel, did send him back to Pilate,

²⁴ and Pilate gave judgment for their request being done,

²⁷ for gathered together of a truth against Your holy child Jesus, whom You did anoint, were both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with nations and peoples of Israel,

²⁶ 'Claudius Lysias, to the most noble governor Felix, hail:

²⁷ and two years having been fulfilled, Felix received a successor, Porcius Festus; Felix also willing to lay a favour on the Jews, left Paul bound.

³⁰ And, he having spoken these things, the king rose up, and the governor, Bernice also, and those sitting with them,

¹ And in those days comes John the Baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, 'Reform, for come near has the reign of the heavens,' ³ for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, 'A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, straight make you His paths.' ⁴ And this John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a girdle of skin round his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and honey of the field. ⁵ Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan, ⁶ and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins. ⁷ And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming about his baptism, he said to them, 'Brood of vipers! Who did show you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸ Bear, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, ⁹ and do not think to say in yourselves, A father we have -- Abraham, for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham, ¹⁰ and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast.

⁷ And as they are going, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, 'What went you out to the wilderness to view? -- A reed shaken by the wind?

³ Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, to the court of the chief priest who was called Caiaphas;

³ 'A voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, straight make you his paths,' -- ⁴ John came baptizing in the wilderness, and proclaiming a baptism of reformation -- to remission of sins, ⁵ and there were going forth to him all the region of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and they were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁵⁹ And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias, ⁶⁰ and his mother answering said, 'No, but he shall be called John.' ⁶¹ And they said unto her -- 'There is none among your kindred who is called by this name,' ⁶² and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called, ⁶³ and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, 'John is his name;' and they did all wonder;

⁸⁰ And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.

²³ He said, 'I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.'

⁴⁹ and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, 'You have not known anything, ⁵⁰ nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.' ⁵¹ And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

¹³ and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year, ¹⁴ and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.

²⁴ Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.

⁶ and Annas the chief priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the chief priest,

⁵ Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan, ⁶ and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins.

¹¹ 'I indeed do baptize you with water to reformation, but he who after me is coming is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to bear the sandals, he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire,

⁷⁷ To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,

²⁸ These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing,

³¹ and I knew him not, but, that he might be manifested to Israel, because of this I came with the water baptizing. ³² And John testified, saying -- 'I have seen the Spirit coming down, as a dove, out of heaven, and it remained on him; ³³ and I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whomsoever you mayest see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on him, this is he who is baptizing with the Holy Spirit;

²⁶ and they came unto John, and said to him, 'Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you did testify, lo, this one is baptizing, and all are coming unto him.'

²⁴ John having first preached, before his coming, a baptism of reformation to all the people of Israel;

⁴ And Paul said, 'John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;'

¹⁶ and now, why tarry you? having risen, baptize yourself, and wash away your sins, calling upon the name of the Lord.

³ for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, 'A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, straight make you His paths.'

³ 'A voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, straight make you his paths,' --

¹⁶ and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God, ¹⁷ and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'

⁷⁶ And you, child, Prophet of the Highest Shall you be called; For you shall go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways. ⁷⁷ To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins, ⁷⁸ Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us, ⁷⁹ To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'

⁷ this one came for testimony, that he might testify about the Light, that all might believe through him;

²⁶ John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but in midst of you he has stood whom you have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who has been before me, ²⁷ of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the cord of his sandal.' ²⁸ These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing, ²⁹ on the morrow John sees Jesus coming unto him, and said, 'Lo, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world; ³⁰ this is he concerning whom I said, After me does come a man, who has come before me, because he was before me: ³¹ and I knew him not, but, that he might be manifested to Israel, because of this I came with the water baptizing. ³² And John testified, saying -- 'I have seen the Spirit coming down, as a dove, out of heaven, and it remained on him; ³³ and I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whomsoever you mayest see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on him, this is he who is baptizing with the Holy Spirit; ³⁴ and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.' ³⁵ On the morrow, again, John was standing, and two of his disciples, ³⁶ and having looked on Jesus walking, he said, 'Lo, the Lamb of God;'

²⁸ you yourselves do testify to me that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am having been sent before him; ²⁹ he who is having the bride is bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom, who is standing and hearing him, with joy does rejoice because of the voice of the bridegroom; this, then, my joy has been fulfilled. ³⁰ 'Him it behooves to increase, and me to become less; ³¹ he who from above is coming is above all; he who is from the earth, from the earth he is, and from the earth he speaks; he who from the heaven is coming is above all. ³² 'And what he has seen and heard this he does testify, and his testimony none receives; ³³ he who is receiving his testimony did seal that God is true; ³⁴ for he whom God sent, the sayings of God he speaks; for not by measure does God give the Spirit; ³⁵ the Father does love the Son, and all things has given into his hand; ³⁶ he who is believing in the Son, has life age-during; and he who is not believing the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God does remain upon him.'

⁵¹ He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart, ⁵² He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly, ⁵³ The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,

¹² Therefore, the hanging-down hands and the loosened knees set you up; ¹³ and straight paths make for your feet, that that which is lame may not be turned aside, but rather be healed;

⁹ And let the brother who is low rejoice in his exaltation,

¹⁵ and he said to them, 'Having gone to all the world, proclaim the good news to all the creation;

¹⁰ And the messenger said to them, 'Fear not, for lo, I bring you good news of great joy, that shall be to all the people -- ¹¹ because there was born to you to-day a Saviour -- who is Christ the Lord -- in the city of David,

³⁰ because mine eyes did see Your salvation, ³¹ which You did prepare before the face of all the peoples, ³² a light to the uncovering of nations, and the glory of Your people Israel.'

¹² for there is no difference between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord of all is rich to all those calling upon Him,

¹⁸ but I say, Did they not hear? yes, indeed -- 'to all the earth their voice went forth, and to the ends of the habitable world their sayings.'

³⁴ 'Brood of vipers! How are you able to speak good things -- being evil? For out of the abundance of the heart does the mouth speak.

³³ 'Serpents! Brood of vipers! How may you escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

⁴⁴ 'You are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father you will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he has not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaks, because he is a liar -- also his father.

¹⁰ said, 'O full of all guile, and all profligacy, son of a devil, enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the right ways of the Lord?

¹⁰ and to wait for His Son from the heavens, whom He did raise out of the dead -- Jesus, who is rescuing us from the anger that is coming.

¹⁸ that through two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, a strong comfort we may have who did flee for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us,

⁸ he who is doing the sin, of the devil he is, because from the beginning the devil does sin; for this was the Son of God manifested, that he may break up the works of the devil;

¹¹ and I say to you, that many from east and west shall come and recline (at meat) with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the reign of the heavens, ¹² but the sons of the reign shall be cast forth to the outer darkness -- there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth.'

⁴³ 'Because of this I say to you, that the reign of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth its fruit;

²⁸ 'There shall be there the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth, when you may see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the reign of God, and yourselves being cast out without; ²⁹ and they shall come from east and west, and from north and south, and shall recline in the reign of God,

²³ and in the hades having lifted up his eyes, being in torments, he does see Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom, ²⁴ and having cried, he said, Father Abraham, deal kindly with me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and may cool my tongue, because I am distressed in this flame. ²⁵ 'And Abraham said, Child, remember that you did receive -- you -- your good things in your life, and Lazarus in like manner the evil things, and now he is comforted, and you are distressed; ²⁶ and besides all these things, between us and you a great chasm is fixed, so that they who are willing to go over from hence unto you are not able, nor do they from thence to us pass through. ²⁷ 'And he said, I pray you, then, father, that you may send him to the house of my father, ²⁸ for I have five brothers, so that he may thoroughly testify to them, that they also may not come to this place of torment. ²⁹ 'Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them; ³⁰ and he said, No, father Abraham, but if any one from the dead may go unto them, they will reform. ³¹ And he said to him, If Moses and the prophets they do not hear, neither if one may rise out of the dead will they be persuaded.'

⁴⁰ and he answering said to them, 'I say to you, that, if these shall be silent, the stones will cry out!'

³³ They answered him, 'Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how do you say -- You shall become free?'

³⁹ They answered and said to him, 'Our father is Abraham;' Jesus said to them, 'If children of Abraham you were, the works of Abraham you were doing;

²⁰ but to those in Damascus first, and to those in Jerusalem, to all the region also of Judea, and to the nations, I was preaching to reform, and to turn back unto God, doing works worthy of reformation;

¹⁶ Because of this it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, for the promise being sure to all the seed, not to that which is of the law only, but also to that which is of the faith of Abraham,

⁷ nor because they are seed of Abraham are all children, but -- 'in Isaac shall a seed be called to you;'

¹⁰ for the sorrow toward God reformation to salvation not to be repented of does work, and the sorrow of the world does work death, ¹¹ for, lo, this same thing -- your being made sorry toward God -- how much diligence it does work in you! but defence, but displeasure, but fear, but longing desire, but zeal, but revenge; in every thing you did approve yourselves to be pure in the matter.

²⁸ there is not here Jew or Greek, there is not here servant nor freeman, there is not here male and female, for all you are one in Christ Jesus; ²⁹ and if you are of Christ then of Abraham you are seed, and according to promise -- heirs.

²² And the fruit of the Spirit is: Love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, ²³ meekness, temperance: against such there is no law; ²⁴ and those who are Christ's, the flesh did crucify with the affections, and the desires;

¹¹ being filled with the fruit of righteousness, that is through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

⁷ For earth, that is drinking in the rain many times coming upon it, and is bringing forth herbs fit for those because of whom also it is dressed, does partake of blessing from God, ⁸ and that which is bearing thorns and briers is disapproved of, and near to cursing, whose end is for burning;

¹⁰ and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast.

¹⁹ Every tree not yielding good fruit is cut down and is cast to fire:

⁷ and he said unto the vine-dresser, Lo, three years I come seeking fruit in this fig-tree, and do not find, cut it off, why also the ground does it render useless?

⁹ and if indeed it may bear fruit --; and if not so, thereafter you shall cut it off.'

²⁹ for, lo, days do come, in which they shall say, Happy the barren, and wombs that did not bare, and paps that did not give suck; ³⁰ then they shall begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us; -- ³¹ for, if in the green tree they do these things -- in the dry what may happen?'

⁶ if any one may not remain in me, he was cast forth without as the branch, and was withered, and they gather them, and cast to fire, and they are burned;

²⁸ any one who did set at nought a law of Moses, apart from mercies, by two or three witnesses, does die,

²⁹ for also our God is a consuming fire.

⁸ make, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have a father -- Abraham; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham;

¹² And there came also tax-gatherers to be baptized, and they said unto him, 'Teacher, what shall we do?'

¹⁴ And questioning him also were those warring, saying, 'And we, what shall we do?' and he said unto them, 'Do violence to no one, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.'

³⁷ And having heard, they were pricked to the heart; they say also to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, 'What shall we do, men, brethren?'

⁶ trembling also, and astonished, he said, 'Lord, what do you wish me to do?' and the Lord said unto him, 'Arise, and enter into the city, and it shall be told you what it behooves you to do.'

³⁰ and having brought them forth, said, 'Sirs, what must I do -- that I may be saved?'

⁴⁰ 'And the king answering, shall say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it to one of these my brethren -- the least -- to me you did it.

⁵ for this could have been sold for more than three hundred denaries, and given to the poor;' and they were murmuring at her. ⁶ And Jesus said, 'Let her alone; why are you giving her trouble? a good work she wrought on me; ⁷ for the poor always you have with you, and whenever you may will you are able to do them good, but me you have not always; ⁸ what she could she did, she anticipated to anoint my body for the embalming.

⁴¹ But what you have give you as alms, and, lo, all things are clean to you.

²² and having heard these things, Jesus said to him, 'Yet one thing to you is lacking; all things -- as many as you have -- sell, and distribute to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven, and come, be following me;'

⁸ And Zaccheus having stood, said unto the Lord, 'Lo, the half of my goods, sir, I give to the poor, and if of any one anything I did take by false accusation, I give back fourfold.'

²⁹ for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus said to him, 'Buy what we have need of for the feast;' or that he may give something to the poor;

² pious, and fearing God with all his house, doing also many kind acts to the people, and beseeching God always,

⁴ and he having looked earnestly on him, and becoming afraid, said, 'What is it, Lord?' And he said to him, 'Your prayers and your kind acts came up for a memorial before God,

³¹ and he said, Cornelius, your prayer was heard, and your kind acts were remembered before God;

³ because, according to their power, I testify, and above their power, they were willing of themselves, ⁴ with much entreaty calling on us to receive the favour and the fellowship of the ministration to the saints, ⁵ and not according as we expected, but themselves they did give first to the Lord, and to us, through the will of God, ⁶ so that we exhorted Titus, that, according as he did begin before, so also he may finish to you also this favour, ⁷ but even as in every thing you do abound, in faith, and word, and knowledge, and all diligence, and in your love to us, that also in this grace you may abound; ⁸ not according to command do I speak, but because of the diligence of others, and of your love proving the genuineness, ⁹ for you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that because of you he became poor -- being rich, that you by that poverty may become rich. ¹⁰ And an opinion in this do I give: for this to you is expedient, who not only to do, but also to will, did begin before -- a year ago, ¹¹ and now also finish doing it, that even as there is the readiness of the will, so also the finishing, out of that which you have, ¹² for if the willing mind is present, according to that which any one may have it is well-accepted, not according to that which he has not; ¹³ for not that for others release, and you pressured, do I speak, ¹⁴ but by equality, at the present time your abundance -- for their want, that also their abundance may be for your want, that there may be equality,

¹⁸ to do good, to be rich in good works, to be ready to impart, willing to communicate,

¹⁰ for God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and the labour of the love, that you showed to His name, having ministered to the saints and ministering;

²⁷ religion pure and undefiled with the God and Father is this, to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation -- unspotted to keep himself from the world.

¹⁵ and if a brother or sister may be naked, and may be destitute of the daily food, ¹⁶ and any one of you may say to them, 'Depart you in peace, be warmed, and be filled,' and may not give to them the things needful for the body, what is the profit? ¹⁷ so also the faith, if it may not have works, is dead by itself. ¹⁸ But say may some one, You have faith, and I have works, show me thy faith out of thy works, and I will show you out of my works my faith: ¹⁹ you -- you do believe that God is one; you do well, and the demons believe, and they shudder! ²⁰ And do you wish to know, O vain man, that the faith apart from the works is dead? ²¹ Abraham our father -- was not he declared righteous out of works, having brought up Isaac his son upon the altar? ²² do you see that the faith was working with his works, and out of the works the faith was perfected? ²³ and fulfilled was the Writing that is saying, 'And Abraham did believe God, and it was reckoned to him -- to righteousness;' and, 'Friend of God' he was called. ²⁴ You see, then, that out of works is man declared righteous, and not out of faith only; ²⁵ and in like manner also Rahab the harlot -- was she not out of works declared righteous, having received the messengers, and by another way having sent forth? ²⁶ for as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also the faith apart from the works is dead.

¹⁷ and whoever may have the goods of the world, and may view his brother having need, and may shut up his compassion from him -- how does the love of God remain in him?

²⁰ if any one may say -- 'I love God,' and his brother he may hate, a liar he is; for he who is not loving his brother whom he has seen, God -- whom he has not seen -- how is he able to love?

³¹ which of the two did the will of the father?' They say to him, 'The first.' Jesus said to them, 'Verily I say to you, that the tax-gatherers and the harlots do go before you into the reign of God, ³² for John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, and the tax-gatherers and the harlots did believe him, and you, having seen, repented not at last -- to believe him.

²⁹ And all the people having heard, and the tax-gatherers, declared God righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John,

¹ And all the tax-gatherers and the sinners were coming near to him, to hear him, ² and the Pharisees and the scribes were murmuring, saying -- This one does receive sinners, and does eat with them.'

¹³ 'And the tax-gatherer, having stood afar off, would not even the eyes lift up to the heaven, but was smiting on his breast, saying, God be propitious to me -- the sinner!

¹² 'All things, therefore, whatever you may will that men may be doing to you, so also do to them, for this is the law and the prophets.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, the reign of God shall inherit.

²⁸ whosoever is stealing let him no more steal, but rather let him labour, working the thing that is good with the hands, that he may have to impart\'7bgive\'7d to him having need.

¹¹ For the saving grace of God was manifested to all men, ¹² teaching us, that denying the impiety and the worldly desires, soberly and righteously and piously we may live in the present age,

¹ Therefore, we also having so great a cloud of witnesses set around us, every weight having put off, and the closely besetting sin, through endurance may we run the contest that is set before us,

⁵ And Jesus having entered into Capernaum, there came to him a centurion calling upon him,

⁷ And when the messenger who is speaking to Cornelius went away, having called two of his domestics, and a pious soldier of those waiting on him continually,

⁹ for, 'You shall not commit adultery, You shall do no murder, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false testimony, You shall not covet;' and if there is any other command, in this word it is summed up, in this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself;' ¹⁰ the love to the neighbor does work no ill; the love, therefore, is the fulness of law.

¹⁵ that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God, unblemished in the midst of a generation crooked and perverse, among whom you do appear as luminaries in the world,

¹¹ not that in respect of want I say it, for I did learn in the things in which I am -- to be content;

⁸ but having food and raiment -- with these we shall suffice ourselves; ⁹ and those wishing to be rich, do fall into temptation and a snare, and many desires, foolish and hurtful, that sink men into ruin and destruction, ¹⁰ for a root of all the evils is the love of money, which certain longing for did go astray from the faith, and themselves did pierce through with many sorrows;

³ aged women, in like manner, in deportment\'7bbehavior\'7d as does become sacred persons, not false accusers, to much wine not enslaved, of good things teachers,

⁵ Without covetousness the behaviour, being content with the things present, for He has said, 'No, I will not leave, no, nor forsake you,' ⁶ so that we do boldly say, 'The Lord is to me a helper, and I will not fear what man shall do to me.'

¹⁰ And I heard a great voice saying in the heaven, 'Now did come the salvation, and the power, and the reign, of our God, and the authority of His Christ, because cast down was the accuser of our brethren, who is accusing them before our God day and night;

¹⁹ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent out of Jerusalem priests and Levites, that they might question him, 'Who are you?' ²⁰ and he confessed and did not deny, and confessed -- 'I am not the Christ.' ²¹ And they questioned him, 'What then? Elijah are you?' and he said, 'I am not.' -- 'The prophet are you?' and he answered, 'No.' ²² They said then to him, 'Who are you, that we may give an answer to those sending us? what do you say concerning yourself?' ²³ He said, 'I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.' ²⁴ And those sent were of the Pharisees, ²⁵ and they questioned him and said to him, 'Why, then, do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?' ²⁶ John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but in midst of you he has stood whom you have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who has been before me, ²⁷ of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the cord of his sandal.' ²⁸ These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing,

²⁸ you yourselves do testify to me that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am having been sent before him; ²⁹ he who is having the bride is bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom, who is standing and hearing him, with joy does rejoice because of the voice of the bridegroom; this, then, my joy has been fulfilled.

²⁴ the Jews, therefore, came round about him, and said to him, 'Till when our soul do you hold in suspense? if you are the Christ, tell us freely.'

⁷ and he proclaimed, saying, 'He does come -- who is mightier than I -- after me, of whom I am not worthy -- having stooped down -- to loose the latchet of his sandals; ⁸ I indeed did baptize you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'

²⁶ John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but in midst of you he has stood whom you have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who has been before me,

³³ and I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whomsoever you mayest see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on him, this is he who is baptizing with the Holy Spirit;

³⁸ he who is believing in me, according as the Writing said, Rivers out of his belly shall flow of living water;'

⁵ because John, indeed, baptized with water, and you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit -- after not many days.'

³ and there appeared to them divided tongues, as it were of fire; it sat also upon each one of them, ⁴ and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, according as the Spirit was giving them to declare.

¹⁷ And it shall be in the last days, said God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; ¹⁸ and also upon My men-servants, and upon My maid-servants, in those days, I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy;

³³ at the right hand then of God having been exalted -- also the promise of the Holy Spirit having received from the Father -- he was shedding forth this, which now you see and hear;

⁴⁴ While Peter is yet speaking these sayings, the Holy spirit fell upon all those hearing the word,

¹⁵ 'And in my beginning to speak, the Holy Spirit did fall upon them, even as also upon us in the beginning, ¹⁶ and I remembered the saying of the Lord, how he said, John indeed did baptize with water, and you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit;

²⁴ John having first preached, before his coming, a baptism of reformation to all the people of Israel; ²⁵ and as John was fulfilling the course, he said, Whom me do you suppose to be? I am not he, but, lo, he does come after me, of whom I am not worthy to loose the sandal of his feet.

⁴ And Paul said, 'John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;' ⁵ and they, having heard, were baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus,

¹³ for also in one Spirit we all to one body were baptized, whether Jews or Greeks, whether servants or freemen, and all into one Spirit were made to drink,

¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather his wheat to the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'

³⁰ permit both to grow together till the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the darnel, and bind it in bundles, to burn it, and the wheat gather up into my storehouse.'

⁴³ 'And if your hand may cause you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you maimed to enter into the life, than having the two hands, to go away to the gehenna, to the fire -- the unquenchable -- ⁴⁴ where there worm is not dying, and the fire is not being quenched. ⁴⁵ 'And if your foot may cause you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into the life lame, than having the two feet to be cast to the gehenna, to the fire -- the unquenchable -- ⁴⁶ where there worm is not dying, and the fire is not being quenched. ⁴⁷ And if your eye may cause you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you one-eyed to enter into the reign of God, than having two eyes, to be cast to the gehenna of the fire -- ⁴⁸ where their worm is not dying, and the fire is not being quenched; ⁴⁹ for every one with fire shall be salted, and every sacrifice with salt shall be salted.

¹⁵ John does testify concerning him, and has cried, saying, 'This was he of whom I said, He who after me is coming, has come before me, for he was before me;'

²⁹ on the morrow John sees Jesus coming unto him, and said, 'Lo, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world;

³⁴ and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.'

⁴⁰ Also with many more other words he was testifying and exhorting, saying, 'Be saved from this perverse generation;'

² And John having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, having sent two of his disciples,

³ For Herod having laid hold on John, did bind him, and did put him in prison, because of Herodias his brother Philip's wife, ⁴ for John was saying to him, 'It is not lawful to you to have her,'

¹⁷ For Herod himself, having sent forth, did lay hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her, ¹⁸ for John said to Herod -- 'It is not lawful to you to have the wife of your brother;'

¹ And in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar -- Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene --

³⁵ and the husbandmen having taken his servants, one they scourged, and one they killed, and one they stoned. ³⁶ 'Again he sent other servants more than the first, and they did to them in the same manner. ³⁷ 'And at last he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son; ³⁸ and the husbandmen having seen the son, said among themselves, This is the heir, come, we may kill him, and may possess his inheritance; ³⁹ and having taken him, they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him; ⁴⁰ whenever therefore the lord of the vineyard may come, what will he do to these husbandmen?' ⁴¹ They say to him, 'Evil men -- he will evilly destroy them, and the vineyard will give out to other husbandmen, who will give back to him the fruits in their seasons.'

⁶ and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, did insult and slay them. ⁷ 'And the king having heard, was enraged, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire;

³¹ So that you testify to yourselves, that you are sons of them who did murder the prophets; ³² and you -- you fill up the measure of your fathers. ³³ 'Serpents! Brood of vipers! How may you escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

³¹ On that day there came near certain Pharisees, saying to him, 'Go forth, and be going on hence, for Herod does wish to kill you;' ³² and he said to them, 'Having gone, say to this fox, Lo, I cast forth demons, and perfect cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third day I am being perfected; ³³ but it is necessary for me to-day, and to-morrow, and the day following, to go on, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish out of Jerusalem. ³⁴ 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that is killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto her, how often did I will to gather together your children, as a hen her brood under the wings, and you did not will.

²⁴ for John was not yet cast into the prison --

¹⁵ who did both put to death the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and did persecute us, and God they are not pleasing, and to all men are contrary, ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the nations that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always, but the anger did come upon them -- to the end!

⁶ because blood of saints and prophets they did pour out, and blood to them You did give to drink, for they are worthy;'

¹³ Then comes Jesus from Galilee upon the Jordan, unto John to be baptized by him, ¹⁴ but John was forbidding him, saying, 'I have need by you to be baptized -- and you do come unto me!' ¹⁵ But Jesus answering said to him, 'Permit now, for thus it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness,' then he does permit him. ¹⁶ And having been baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and lo, opened to him were the heavens, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him, ¹⁷ and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, 'This is My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'

²³ and having let away the multitudes, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray, and evening having come, he was there alone,

⁹ And it came to pass in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John at the Jordan; ¹⁰ and immediately coming up from the water, he saw the heavens dividing, and the Spirit as a dove coming down upon him; ¹¹ and a voice came out of the heavens, 'You are My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'

¹⁶ and he was withdrawing himself in the desert places and was praying.

¹⁸ And it came to pass, as he is praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he questioned them, saying, 'Who do the multitudes say me to be?'

²⁸ And it came to pass, after these words, as it were eight days, that having taken Peter, and John, and James, he went up to the mountain to pray, ²⁹ and it came to pass, in his praying, the appearance of his face became altered, and his garment white -- sparkling.

³² And John testified, saying -- 'I have seen the Spirit coming down, as a dove, out of heaven, and it remained on him; ³³ and I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whomsoever you mayest see the Spirit coming down, and remaining on him, this is he who is baptizing with the Holy Spirit; ³⁴ and I have seen, and have testified, that this is the Son of God.'

²⁷ 'Now has my soul been troubled, and what? shall I say -- Father, save me from this hour? -- but because of this I came to this hour; ²⁸ Father, glorify Your name.' There came, therefore, a voice out of the heaven, 'I both glorified, and again I will glorify it;'

¹⁷ and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, 'This is My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'

¹⁸ 'Lo, My servant, whom I did choose, My beloved, in whom My soul did delight, I will put My Spirit upon him, and judgment to the nations he shall declare,

⁵ While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My Son, -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.'

⁴³ he has trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said -- Son of God I am;'

²¹ And he began to say unto them -- 'To-day has this writing been fulfilled in your ears;'

³⁴ and as he was speaking these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them, and they feared in their entering into the cloud, ³⁵ and a voice came out of the cloud saying, 'This is My Son -- the Beloved; hear you him;'

³² And John testified, saying -- 'I have seen the Spirit coming down, as a dove, out of heaven, and it remained on him;

³⁸ Jesus who is from Nazareth -- how God did anoint him with the Holy Spirit and power; who went through, doing good, and healing all those oppressed by the devil, because God was with him;

¹³ who did rescue us out of the authority of the darkness, and did translate us into the reign of the Son of His love,

⁴ to whom coming -- a living stone -- by men, indeed, having been disapproved of, but with God choice, precious,

¹⁷ for having received from God the Father honour and glory, such a voice being borne to him by the excellent glory: 'This is My Son -- the beloved, in whom I was well pleased;' ¹⁸ and this voice we -- we did hear, out of heaven borne, being with him in the holy mount.

¹ A roll of the birth of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

⁶ and Jesse fathered David the king. And David the king fathered Solomon, of her who had been Uriah's,

¹⁶ and Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is named Christ.

¹⁷ From that time began Jesus to proclaim and to say, 'Reform you, for come near has the reign of the heavens.'

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?' -- and they were being stumbled at him.

²³ And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, son of Joseph, ²⁴ the son of Eli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, ²⁵ the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Naum, the son of Esli, ²⁶ the son of Naggai, the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Juda, ²⁷ the son of Joanna, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,

³¹ the son of Melea, the son of Mainan, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan,

²² and all were bearing testimony to him, and were wondering at the gracious words that are coming forth out of his mouth, and they said, 'Is not this the son of Joseph?'

⁴² and they said, 'Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then said this one -- Out of the heaven I have come down?'

¹ The former account, indeed, I made concerning all things, O Theophilus, that Jesus began both to do and to teach,

¹² And after the Babylonian removal, Jeconiah fathered Shealtiel, and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel,

³ and Judah fathered Pharez and Zarah of Tamar, and Pharez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered Ram, ⁴ and Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon, ⁵ and Salmon fathered Boaz of Rahab, and Boaz fathered Obed of Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse, ⁶ and Jesse fathered David the king. And David the king fathered Solomon, of her who had been Uriah's,

²² and having removed him, He did raise up to them David for king, to whom also having testified, he said, I found David, the son of Jesse, a man according to My heart, who shall do all My will. ²³ 'Of this one's seed God, according to promise, did raise to Israel a Saviour -- Jesus,

² Abraham fathered Isaac, and Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered Judah and his brethren, ³ and Judah fathered Pharez and Zarah of Tamar, and Pharez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered Ram, ⁴ and Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon,

² Abraham fathered Isaac, and Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered Judah and his brethren,

⁸ 'And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begat Isaac, and did circumcise him on the eighth day, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob -- the twelve patriarchs;

²⁷ they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were given in marriage, till the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the deluge came, and destroyed all;

⁷ By faith Noah, having been divinely warned concerning the things not yet seen, having feared, did prepare an ark to the salvation of his house, through which he did condemn the world, and of the righteousness according to faith he became heir.

²⁰ who sometime disbelieved, when once the long-suffering of God did wait, in days of Noah -- an ark being preparing -- in which few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water;

⁵ and the old world did not spare, but the eighth person, Noah, of righteousness a preacher, did keep, a flood on the world of the impious having brought,

²⁶ He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth -- having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings -- ²⁷ to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, -- though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us, ²⁸ for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring. ²⁹ 'Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;

⁴⁵ so also it has been written, 'The first man Adam became a living creature,' the last Adam is for a life-giving spirit,

⁴⁷ The first man is out of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord out of heaven;
