¹³ It happened, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and look, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him, and said to him, "Are you for us, or for our adversaries?"

He said, "Jacob." ²⁸ Then he said, "Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed." ²⁹ Then Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask what my name is?" And he blessed him there. ³⁰ So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life has been preserved."

¹ Now Jacob looked up and saw that Esau approaching, and with him four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah, Rachel, and the two female servants.

⁵ And he looked up and saw the women and the children, and said, "Who are these with you?" He said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."

²³ For my angel shall go before you, and bring you in to the Amorite, the Hethite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I will cut them off.

² The LORD said to Joshua, "Look, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor.

⁸ Then Manoah pleaded with the LORD, and said, "Oh, Lord, please let the man of God whom you did send come again to us, and teach us what we shall do to the child who shall be born." ⁹ God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah, her husband, wasn't with her.

¹¹ Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, "Are you the man who spoke to the woman?" He said, "I am."

²² Manoah said to his wife, "We shall surely die, because we have seen God."

¹⁷ David went out to meet them, and answered them, "If you have come peaceably to me to help me, my heart shall be knit to you; but if you have come to betray me to my adversaries, since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it." ¹⁸ Then the Spirit came on Amasai, who was chief of the Thirty, and he said, "We are yours, David, and on your side, you son of Jesse: peace, peace be to you, and peace be to your helpers; for your God helps you." Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.

¹⁶ David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces. ¹⁷ David said to God, "Isn't it I who commanded the people to be numbered? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued."

²⁷ The LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into its sheath.

³⁰ But David couldn't go before it to inquire of God; for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.

³ Then I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and look, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns. And the two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up last.

⁵ I lifted up my eyes and looked, and look, a man clothed in linen, around his waist a belt made of pure gold from Uphaz.

¹⁰ While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, look, two men stood by them in white clothing,

¹³ And among the lampstands was one like a son of man, clothed with a robe reaching down to his feet, and with a golden sash around his chest.
