²⁹ So Pilate came outside to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"

¹¹ So Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And Jesus said, "You say so." ¹² And _⌊when he was being accused_⌋* by the chief priests and elders he answered nothing. ¹³ Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?" ¹⁴ And he did not reply to him, not even with reference to one statement, so that the governor was very astonished.

²³ And he said, "Why? What wrong has he done?" But they began to shout* even louder, saying, "Let him be crucified!"

² And Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And he answered him and* said, "You say so." ³ And the chief priests began to accuse* him of many things. ⁴ So Pilate asked him again, saying, "Do you not answer anything? See how many charges* they are bringing against you!" ⁵ But Jesus did not answer anything further, so that Pilate was astonished.

² And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us* to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying he himself is Christ, a king!" ³ And Pilate asked him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And he answered him and* said, "You say so."

²⁸ And because I* wanted to know the charge for which they were accusing him, I brought him* down to their Sanhedrin.* ²⁹ I found _⌊he_⌋* was accused concerning controversial questions of their law, but having no charge deserving death or imprisonment. ³⁰ And when it* was made known to me there would be a plot against the man, I sent him* to you immediately, also ordering his* accusers to speak against him* before you.

¹⁶ To _⌊them_⌋* I replied that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up any man before the one who had been accused met his* accusers face to face and received an opportunity for a defense concerning the accusation.
