³⁵ I haue seene the wicked strong, and spreading himselfe like a greene bay tree.

¹¹ And Haman tolde them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the King had promoted him, and how that he had set him aboue the princes and seruants of the King.

³ I haue seene the foolish well rooted, and suddenly I cursed his habitation, saying,

¹³ So are the paths of al that forget God, and the hypocrites hope shall perish. ¹⁴ His confidence also shalbe cut off, and his trust shalbe as the house of a spyder. ¹⁵ He shall leane vpon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall holde him fast by it, yet shall it not endure. ¹⁶ The tree is greene before the sunne, and the branches spread ouer the garden thereof. ¹⁷ The rootes thereof are wrapped about the fountaine, and are folden about ye house of stones. ¹⁸ If any plucke it from his place, and it denie, saying, I haue not seene thee, ¹⁹ Beholde, it will reioyce by this meanes, that it may growe in another molde.

⁷ Wherefore do the wicked liue, and waxe olde, and grow in wealth? ⁸ Their seede is established in their sight with them, and their generation before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are peaceable without feare, and the rod of God is not vpon them. ¹⁰ Their bullocke gendreth, and fayleth not: their cow calueth, and casteth not her calfe. ¹¹ They send forth their children like sheepe, and their sonnes dance. ¹² They take the tabret and harpe, and reioyce in the sound of the organs. ¹³ They spend their dayes in wealth, and suddenly they go downe to the graue. ¹⁴ They say also vnto God, Depart from vs: for we desire not the knowledge of thy wayes. ¹⁵ Who is the Almightie, that we should serue him? and what profit should we haue, if we should pray vnto him? ¹⁶ Lo, their wealth is not in their hand: therfore let the counsell of the wicked bee farre from me. ¹⁷ How oft shall the candle of the wicked be put out? and their destruction come vpon them? he wil deuide their liues in his wrath.

³ For I feared at the foolish, when I sawe the prosperitie of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no bandes in their death, but they are lustie and strong. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men, neither are they plagued with other men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chayne vnto them, and crueltie couereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stande out for fatnesse: they haue more then heart can wish. ⁸ They are licentious, and speake wickedly of their oppression: they talke presumptuously. ⁹ They set their mouth against heauen, and their tongue walketh through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore his people turne hither: for waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. ¹¹ And they say, Howe doeth God know it? or is there knowledge in the most High?

¹⁴ I wil ascend aboue ye height of the cloudes, and I will be like the most high. ¹⁵ But thou shalt bee brought downe to the graue, to the sides of the pit. ¹⁶ They that see thee, shall looke vpon thee and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, and that did shake the kingdomes? ¹⁷ He made the worlde as a wildernesse, and destroied the cities thereof, and opened not the house of his prisoners. ¹⁸ All the Kings of the nations, euen they all sleepe in glorie, euery one in his owne house. ¹⁹ But thou art cast out of thy graue like an abominable branch: like the raiment of those that are slaine, and thrust thorowe with a sword, which goe downe to the stones of the pit, as a carkeise troden vnder feete.

⁶ All the foules of the heauen made their nestes in his boughes, and vnder his branches did all the beastes of the fielde bring foorth their yong, and vnder his shadowe dwelt all mightie nations. ⁷ Thus was he faire in his greatnesse, and in the length of his branches: for his roote was neere great waters. ⁸ The cedars in the garden of God coulde not hide him: no firre tree was like his branches, and the chessenut trees were not like his boughes: all the trees in the garden of God were not like vnto him in his beautie. ⁹ I made him faire by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, enuied him. ¹⁰ Therefore thus sayeth the Lord God, Because he is lift vp on high, and hath shot vp his toppe among the thicke boughes, and his heart is lift vp in his height,

¹⁸ To whom art thou thus like in glorie and in greatnesse among the trees of Eden? yet thou shalt be cast downe with the trees of Eden vnto the nether partes of the earth: thou shalt sleepe in the middes of the vncircumcised, with them that be slaine by the sworde: this is Pharaoh and all his multitude, sayth the Lord God.

²⁰ Where as the King sawe a watchman, and an holy one, that came downe from heauen, and said, Hew downe the tree and destroy it, yet leaue the stumpe of the rootes thereof in the earth, and with a bande of yron and brasse binde it among the grasse of the fielde, and let it be wette with the dewe of heauen, and let his portion be with the beastes of the fielde, till seuen times passe ouer him, ²¹ This is the interpretation, O King, and it is the decree of the most High, which is come vpon my lord the King, ²² That they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beasts of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse as the oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dewe of heauen: and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, till thou knowe, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it to whom so euer he will. ²³ Where as they sayd, that one should leaue the stumpe of the tree rootes, thy kingdome shall remaine vnto thee: after that, thou shalt knowe, that the heauens haue the rule. ²⁴ Wherefore, O King, let my counsell be acceptable vnto thee, and breake off thy sinnes by righteousnes, and thine iniquities by mercy toward the poore: lo, let there be an healing of thine errour. ²⁵ All these things shall come vpon the King Nebuchad-nezzar. ²⁶ At the end of twelue moneths, he walked in the royall palace of Babel. ²⁷ And the King spake and sayde, Is not this great Babel, that I haue built for the house of the kingdome by the might of my power, and for the honour of my maiestie? ²⁸ While the worde was in the Kings mouth, a voyce came downe from heauen, saying, O King Nebuchad-nezzar, to thee be it spoken, Thy kingdome is departed from thee, ²⁹ And they shall driue thee from men, and thy dwelling shalbe with the beastes of the fielde: they shall make thee to eate grasse, as the oxen, and seuen times shall passe ouer thee, vntill thou knowest, that the most High beareth rule ouer the kingdome of men, and giueth it vnto whomsoeuer he will. ³⁰ The very same houre was this thing fulfilled vpon Nebuchad-nezzar, and hee was driuen from men, and did eate grasse as the oxen, and his body was wet with the dewe of heauen, till his heares were growen as eagles feathers, and his nailes like birds clawes. ³¹ And at the ende of these dayes I Nebuchad-nezzar lift vp mine eyes vnto heauen, and mine vnderstanding was restored vnto me, and I gaue thankes vnto the most High, and I praysed and honoured him that liueth for euer, whose power is an euerlasting power, and his kingdome is from generation to generation. ³² And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and according to his will he worketh in the armie of heauen, and in the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, nor say vnto him, What doest thou? ³³ At the same time was mine vnderstanding restored vnto me, and I returned to the honour of my kingdome: my glory and my beautie was restored vnto me, and my counsellours and my princes sought vnto me, and I was established in my kingdome, and my glory was augmented toward me.
