⁹ BETH. Wherewith shall a yong man redresse his waie? in taking heede thereto according to thy woorde.

⁶ And these wordes which I commaund thee this day, shalbe in thine heart. ⁷ And thou shalt rehearse them continually vnto thy children, and shalt talke of them when thou tariest in thine house, and as thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest downe, and when thou risest vp: ⁸ And thou shalt binde them for a signe vpon thine hand, and they shalbe as frontlets betweene thine eyes. ⁹ Also thou shalt write them vpon ye postes of thine house, and vpon thy gates.

¹⁸ And when he shall sit vpon the throne of his kingdo, then shall he write him this Law repeted in a booke, by the Priests of the Leuites.

⁷ Onely be thou strong, and of a most valiant courage, that thou mayest obserue and doe according to all the Lawe which Moses my seruant hath commanded thee: thou shalt not turne away from it to the right hande, nor to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoeuer thou goest.

¹⁶ Therefore now Lord God of Israel, keepe with thy seruant Dauid my father, that thou hast promised him, saying, Thou shalt not want a man in my sight, that shall sit vpon the throne of Israel: so that thy sonnes take heede to their wayes, to walke in my Lawe, as thou hast walked before me.

⁵ And when the dayes of their banketting were gone about, Iob sent, and sanctified them, and rose vp early in the morning, and offred burnt offrings according to the nomber of them all. For Iob thought, It may be that my sonnes haue sinned, and blasphemed God in their hearts: thus did Iob euery day.

²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possesse the iniquities of my youth.

¹ Blessed is the man that doeth not walke in the counsell of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in ye seate of the scornefull: ² But his delite is in the Lawe of the Lord, and in his Lawe doeth he meditate day and night. ³ For he shall be like a tree planted by the riuers of waters, that will bring foorth her fruite in due season: whose leafe shall not fade: so whatsoeuer he shall doe, shall prosper.

⁷ The Lawe of the Lord is perfite, conuerting the soule: the testimonie of the Lord is sure, and giueth wisedome vnto the simple. ⁸ The statutes of the Lord are right and reioyce the heart: the commandement of the Lord is pure, and giueth light vnto the eyes. ⁹ The feare of the Lord is cleane, and indureth for euer: the iudgements of the Lord are trueth: they are righteous altogether, ¹⁰ And more to be desired then golde, yea, then much fine golde: sweeter also then honie and the honie combe. ¹¹ Moreouer by them is thy seruant made circumspect, and in keeping of them there is great reward.

⁷ Remember not the sinnes of my youth, nor my rebellions, but according to thy kindenesse remember thou me, euen for thy goodnesse sake, O Lord.

¹¹ Come children, hearken vnto me: I will teache you the feare of the Lord.

⁴ Wee will not hide them from their children but to the generation to come we wil shewe the praises of the Lord his power also, and his wonderful woorkes that he hath done: ⁵ How he established a testimonie in Iaakob, and ordeined a Law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they shoulde teache their children: ⁶ That the posteritie might knowe it, and the children, which should be borne, should stand vp, and declare it to their children: ⁷ That they might set their hope on God, and not forget the workes of God but keepe his commandements: ⁸ And not to bee as their fathers, a disobedient and rebellious generation: a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirite was not faithfull vnto God.

¹¹ I haue hid thy promise in mine heart, that I might not sinne against thee.

⁹⁷ MEM. Oh howe loue I thy Lawe! it is my meditation continually. ⁹⁸ By thy commandements thou hast made mee wiser then mine enemies: for they are euer with mee. ⁹⁹ I haue had more vnderstading then all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I vnderstoode more then the ancient, because I kept thy precepts. ¹⁰¹ I haue refrained my feete from euery euil way, that I might keepe thy word. ¹⁰² I haue not declined from thy iudgements: for thou didest teach me. ¹⁰³ Howe sweete are thy promises vnto my mouth! yea, more then hony vnto my mouth. ¹⁰⁴ By thy precepts I haue gotten vnderstanding: therefore I hate all the wayes of falshoode. ¹⁰⁵ NUN. Thy worde is a lanterne vnto my feete, and a light vnto my path.

⁴ To giue vnto the simple, sharpenesse of wit, and to the childe knowledge and discretion.

¹⁰ My sonne, if sinners doe intise thee, consent thou not.

¹ Heare, O ye children, the instruction of a father, and giue eare to learne vnderstanding.

¹⁰ Heare, my sonne, and receiue my wordes, and the yeeres of thy life shalbe many. ¹¹ I haue taught thee in ye way of wisedom, and led thee in the pathes of righteousnesse. ¹² Whe thou goest, thy gate shall not be strait, and when thou runnest, thou shalt not fall. ¹³ Take holde of instruction, and leaue not: keepe her, for shee is thy life. ¹⁴ Enter not into the way of the wicked, and walke not in the way of euill men. ¹⁵ Auoide it, and goe not by it: turne from it, and passe by. ¹⁶ For they can not sleepe, except they haue done euill, and their sleepe departeth except they cause some to fall. ¹⁷ For they eate the breade of wickednesse, and drinke the wine of violence.

⁷ Heare yee me nowe therefore, O children, and depart not from the wordes of my mouth. ⁸ Keepe thy way farre from her, and come not neere the doore of her house, ⁹ Least thou giue thine honor vnto others, and thy yeeres to the cruell: ¹⁰ Least the stranger should be silled with thy strength, and thy labours bee in the house of a stranger, ¹¹ And thou mourne at thine end, (when thou hast consumed thy flesh and thy bodie) ¹² And say, How haue I hated instruction, and mine heart despised correction! ¹³ And haue not obeied the voyce of them that taught mee, nor enclined mine eare to them that instructed me! ¹⁴ I was almost brought into all euil in ye mids of the Congregation and assemblie. ¹⁵ Drinke the water of thy cisterne, and of the riuers out of the middes of thine owne well. ¹⁶ Let thy fountaines flow foorth, and the riuers of waters in the streetes. ¹⁷ But let them bee thine, euen thine onely, and not the strangers with thee. ¹⁸ Let thy fountaine be blessed, and reioyce with the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ Let her be as the louing hinde and pleasant roe: let her brests satisfie thee at all times, and delite in her loue continually. ²⁰ For why shouldest thou delite, my sonne, in a strange woman, or embrace the bosome of a stranger? ²¹ For the waies of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his pathes. ²² His owne iniquities shall take the wicked himselfe, and he shall be holden with the cordes of his owne sinne. ²³ Hee shall die for fault of instruction, and shall goe astray through his great follie.

²⁰ My sonne, keepe thy fathers commandement, and forsake not thy mothers instruction. ²¹ Binde them alway vpon thine heart, and tye them about thy necke. ²² It shall leade thee, when thou walkest: it shall watch for thee, when thou sleepest, and when thou wakest, it shall talke with thee. ²³ For the commandement is a lanterne, and instruction a light: and corrections for instruction are the way of life, ²⁴ To keepe thee from the wicked woman, and from ye flatterie of ye tongue of a strange woman. ²⁵ Desire not her beautie in thine heart, neither let her take thee with her eye lids. ²⁶ For because of the whorish woman a man is brought to a morsell of bread, and a woman wil hunt for the precious life of a man. ²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosome, and his clothes not be burnt? ²⁸ Or can a man go vpon coales, and his feete not be burnt? ²⁹ So he that goeth in to his neighbours wife, shall not be innocent, whosoeuer toucheth her. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thiefe, when he stealeth, to satisfie his soule, because he is hungrie. ³¹ But if he be founde, he shall restore seuen folde, or he shall giue all the substance of his house. ³² But he that committeth adulterie with a woman, he is destitute of vnderstanding: he that doeth it, destroyeth his owne soule. ³³ He shall finde a wounde and dishonour, and his reproch shall neuer be put away. ³⁴ For ielousie is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He cannot beare the sight of any raunsome: neither will he consent, though thou augment the giftes.

⁷ And I sawe among the fooles, and considered among the children a yong man destitute of vnderstanding,

⁹ Reioyce, O yong man, in thy youth, and let thine heart cheere thee in the dayes of thy youth: and walke in the waies of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but knowe that for all these things, God wil bring thee to iudgement.

¹³ So not many daies after, when the yonger sonne had gathered all together, hee tooke his iourney into a farre countrey, and there hee wasted his goods with riotous liuing.

³ Nowe are ye cleane through the worde, which I haue spoken vnto you.

²² Flee also from the lustes of youth, and follow after righteousnes, faith, loue, and peace, with them that call on the Lord with pure heart,

¹⁵ And that thou hast knowen the holy Scriptures of a childe, which are able to make thee wise vnto saluation, through the faith which is in Christ Iesus. ¹⁶ For the whole Scripture is giuen by inspiration of God, and is profitable to teache, to conuince, to correct, and to instruct in righteousnesse, ¹⁷ That the man of God may be absolute, being made perfect vnto all good workes.

⁴ That they may instruct the yong women to be sober minded, that they loue their husbands, that they loue their children, ⁵ That they be temperate, chaste, keeping at home, good and subiect vnto their husbands, that the word of God be not euill spoken of. ⁶ Exhort yong men likewise, that they bee sober minded.

²¹ Wherefore lay apart all filthinesse, and superfluitie of maliciousnesse, and receiue with meekenes the word that is graffed in you, which is able to saue your soules. ²² And be ye doers of the word, and not hearers onely, deceiuing your owne selues. ²³ For if any heare the woorde, and doe it not, he is like vnto a man, that beholdeth his naturall face in a glasse. ²⁴ For when he hath considered himselfe, hee goeth his way, and forgetteth immediately what maner of one he was. ²⁵ But who so looketh in the perfect Lawe of libertie, and continueth therein, hee not being a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the woorke, shalbe blessed in his deede.
