³⁵ He was a burning, and a shining candle: and ye would for a season haue reioyced in his light.

³¹ For they come vnto thee, as the people vseth to come: and my people sit before thee, and heare thy wordes, but they will not doe them: for with their mouthes they make iestes, and their heart goeth after their couetousnesse.

⁵ Then went out to him Ierusalem and all Iudea, and all the region rounde about Iordan. ⁶ And they were baptized of him in Iordan, confessing their sinnes. ⁷ Now when he sawe many of the Pharises, and of the Sadduces come to his baptisme, he said vnto them, O generations of vipers, who hath forewarned you to flee from the anger to come?

⁷ And as they departed, Iesus beganne to speake vnto the multitude, of Iohn, What went ye out into the wildernes to see? A reede shaken with the winde? ⁸ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that weare soft clothing, are in Kings houses. ⁹ But what went ye out to see? A Prophet? Yea, I say vnto you, and more then a Prophet.

¹¹ Verely I say vnto you, among them which are begotten of women, arose there not a greater then Iohn Baptist: notwithstanding, he that is the least in the kingdome of heauen, is greater then he.

²⁰ And hee that receiued seede in the stonie grounde, is he which heareth the woorde, and incontinently with ioy receiueth it, ²¹ Yet hath he no roote in himselfe, and dureth but a season: for assoone as tribulation or persecution commeth because of the woorde, by and by he is offended.

²⁶ And if we say, Of men, we feare the multitude, for all holde Iohn as a Prophet.

²⁰ For Herod feared Iohn, knowing that hee was a iust man, and an holy, and reuerenced him, and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

¹⁵ For he shalbe great in the sight of the Lord, and shall neither drinke wine, nor strong drinke: and he shalbe filled with the holy Ghost, euen from his mothers wombe. ¹⁶ And many of the children of Israel shall he turne to their Lord God. ¹⁷ For he shall goe before him in the spirite and power of Elias, to turne the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisedome of the iust men, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

²⁸ For I say vnto you, there is no greater Prophet then Iohn, among them that are begotten of women: neuerthelesse, hee that is the least in the kingdome of God, is greater then he.

⁷ This same came for a witnesse, to beare witnesse of that light, that all men through him might beleeue. ⁸ He was not that light, but was sent to beare witnesse of that light.

⁶⁶ From that time, many of his disciples went backe, and walked no more with him.

¹⁵ What was then your felicitie? for I beare you recorde, that if it had bene possible, ye would haue plucked out your owne eyes, and haue giuen them vnto me. ¹⁶ Am I therefore become your enemie, because I tell you the trueth?

¹⁹ We haue also a most sure worde of the Prophets, to the which ye doe well that yee take heede, as vnto a light that shineth in a darke place, vntill the day dawne, and the day starre arise in your hearts.
