³ I knowe Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for nowe, O Ephraim thou art become an harlot, and Israel is defiled.

¹⁹ But his father refused, and sayd, I know well, my sonne, I know well: he shalbe also a people, and he shalbe great likewise: but his yonger brother shalbe greater then he, and his seede shall be full of nations. ²⁰ So he blessed them that day, and sayde, In thee Israel shall blesse, and say, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

¹⁷ His beautie shalbe like his first borne bullock, and his hornes as the hornes of an vnicorne: with them hee shall smite the people together, euen the endes of the world: these are also the ten thousands of Ephraim, and these are the thousands of Manasseh.

²⁶ And Ieroboam thought in his heart, Nowe shall the kingdome returne to the house of Dauid. ²⁷ If this people goe vp and doe sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Ierusalem, then shall the heart of this people turne againe vnto their lorde, euen to Rehoboam King of Iudah: so shall they kill me and goe againe to Rehoboam King of Iudah. ²⁸ Whereupon the King tooke counsell, and made two calues of golde, and saide vnto them, It is too much for you to goe vp to Ierusalem: beholde, O Israel, thy gods, which brought thee vp out of the lande of Egypt. ²⁹ And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other set he in Dan. ³⁰ And this thing turned to sinne: for the people went (because of the one) euen to Dan. ³¹ Also he made an house of hie places, and made Priestes of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sonnes of Leui. ³² And Ieroboam made a feast the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, like vnto the feast that is in Iudah, and offred on the altar. So did he in Beth-el and offered vnto the calues that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the Priestes of the hie places, which he had made. ³³ And he offered vpon the altar, which he had made in Beth-el, the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, (euen in the moneth which he had forged of his owne heart) and made a solemne feast vnto the children of Israel: and he went vp to the altar, to burne incense.

¹⁴ Moreouer, the Lord shall stirre him vp a King ouer Israel, which shall destroy the house of Ieroboam in that day: what? yea, euen nowe. ¹⁵ For the Lord shall smite Israel, as when a reede is shaken in the water, and hee shall weede Israel out of his good lad, which he gaue to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the Riuer, because they haue made them groues, prouoking the Lord to anger. ¹⁶ And he shall giue Israel vp, because of the sinnes of Ieroboam, who did sinne, and made Israel to sinne.

⁵ Because Aram hath taken wicked counsell against thee, and Ephraim, and Remaliahs sonne, saying,

⁸ For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin: and within fiue and threescore yeere, Ephraim shalbe destroyed from being a people. ⁹ And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliahs sonne. If ye beleeue not, surely ye shall not be established.

¹⁷ The Lord shall bring vpon thee, and vpon thy people, and vpon thy fathers house (the dayes that haue not come from the day that Ephraim departed from Iudah) euen the King of Asshur.

⁵ And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine, and she was set on fire with her louers, to wit, with the Assyrians her neighbours, ⁶ Which were clothed with blewe silke, both captaines and princes: they were all pleasant yong men, and horsemen riding vpon horses. ⁷ Thus she committed her whoredome with them, euen with all them that were the chosen men of Asshur, and with all on whome she doted, and defiled her selfe with all their idoles. ⁸ Neither left she her fornications, learned of the Egyptians: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginitie, and powred their whoredome vpon her. ⁹ Wherefore I deliuered her into the hands of her louers, euen into the hands of the Assyrians, vpon whome she doted. ¹⁰ These discouered her shame: they tooke away her sonnes and her daughters, and slewe her with the sworde, and she had an euill name among women: for they had executed iudgement vpon her. ¹¹ And when her sister Aholibah sawe this, she marred her selfe with inordinate loue, more then she, and with her fornications more then her sister with her fornications. ¹² She doted vpon the Assyrians her neighbours, both captaines and princes clothed with diuers sutes, horsemen ryding vpon horses: they were all pleasant yong men. ¹³ Then I sawe that she was defiled, and that they were both after one sort, ¹⁴ And that she encreased her fornications: for when she sawe men painted vpon the wall, the images of the Caldeans painted with vermelon, ¹⁵ And girded with girdles vpon their loynes, and with dyed attyre vpon their heads (looking all like princes after the maner of the Babylonians in Caldea, the land of their natiuitie) ¹⁶ Assoone, I say, as she sawe them, she doted vpon them, and sent messengers vnto them into Caldea. ¹⁷ Nowe when the Babylonians came to her into the bed of loue, they defiled her with their fornication, and she was polluted with them, and her lust departed from them. ¹⁸ So she discouered her fornication, and disclosed her shame: then mine heart forsooke her, like as mine heart had forsaken her sister. ¹⁹ Yet she encreased her whoredome more, and called to remembrance ye dayes of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. ²⁰ For she doted vpon their seruants whose members are as the members of asses, and whose yssue is like the yssue of horses. ²¹ Thou calledst to remembrance the wickednes of thy youth, when thy teates were bruised by ye Egyptians: therefore ye paps of thy youth are thus.

¹⁷ Ephraim is ioyned to idoles: let him alone. ¹⁸ Their drunkennes stinketh: they haue committed whoredome: their rulers loue to say with shame, Bring ye.

⁹ Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel haue I caused to knowe the trueth.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed, and broken in iudgement, because he willingly walked after the commandement.

¹³ When Ephraim sawe his sickenes, and Iudah his wound, then went Ephraim vnto Asshur, and sent vnto King Iareb: yet coulde hee not heale you, nor cure you of your wound.

⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I doe vnto thee? O Iudah, how shall I intreate thee? for your goodnesse is as a morning cloude, and as the morning dewe it goeth away.

¹¹ Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sinne, his altars shalbe to sinne.

¹ Ephraim is fed with the winde, and followeth after the East winde: hee increaseth daily lies and destruction, and they do make a couenant with Asshur, and oyle is caried into Egypt.

¹ When Ephraim spake, there was trembling: hee exalted him selfe in Israel, but he hath sinned in Baal, and is dead.

² You onely haue I knowen of all the families of the earth: therefore I will visite you for all your iniquities.

¹² For I know your manifold transgressions, and your mightie sinnes: they afflict the iust, they take rewards, and they oppresse the poore in ye gate.

¹³ Neither is there any creature, which is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and open vnto his eyes, with whome we haue to doe.

¹⁵ I knowe thy woorkes, that thou art neither colde nor hote: I woulde thou werest colde or hote.
