¹² For our reioycing is this, the testimonie of our conscience, that in simplicitie and godly purenesse, and not in fleshly wisedome, but by the grace of God wee haue had our conuersation in the worlde, and most of all to you wardes.

¹⁴ Nowe therefore feare the Lord, and serue him in vprightnesse and in trueth, and put away the gods, which your fathers serued beyonde the flood and in Egypt, and serue the Lord.

¹⁵ Loe, though he slay me, yet will I trust in him, and I will reprooue my wayes in his sight.

¹⁰ But he knoweth my way, and trieth mee, and I shall come forth like the gold. ¹¹ My foote hath followed his steps: his way haue I kept, and haue not declined. ¹² Neyther haue I departed from the commandement of his lippes, and I haue esteemed the words of his mouth more then mine appointed foode.

⁵ God forbid, that I should iustifie you: vntill I dye, I will neuer take away mine innocencie from my selfe. ⁶ I will keepe my righteousnesse, and wil not forsake it: mine heart shall not reprooue me of my dayes.

¹ I made a couenant with mine eyes: why then should I thinke on a mayde? ² For what portion should I haue of God from aboue? and what inheritance of the Almightie from on hie? ³ Is not destruction to the wicked and strange punishment to the workers of iniquitie? ⁴ Doeth not he beholde my wayes and tell all my steps? ⁵ If I haue walked in vanitie, or if my foote hath made haste to deceite, ⁶ Let God weigh me in the iust balance, and he shall know mine vprightnes. ⁷ If my steppe hath turned out of the way, or mine heart hath walked after mine eye, or if any blot hath cleaued to mine handes, ⁸ Let me sowe, and let another eate: yea, let my plantes be rooted out. ⁹ If mine heart hath bene deceiued by a woman, or if I haue layde wayte at the doore of my neighbour, ¹⁰ Let my wife grinde vnto another man, and let other men bow downe vpon her: ¹¹ For this is a wickednes, and iniquitie to bee condemned: ¹² Yea, this is a fire that shall deuoure to destruction, and which shall roote out al mine increase, ¹³ If I did contemne the iudgement of my seruant, and of my mayde, when they did contend with me, ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God standeth vp? and when he shall visit me, what shall I answere? ¹⁵ He that hath made me in the wombe, hath he not made him? hath not he alone facioned vs in the wombe? ¹⁶ If I restrained the poore of their desire, or haue caused the eyes of the widow to faile, ¹⁷ Or haue eaten my morsels alone, and the fatherles hath not eaten thereof, ¹⁸ (For from my youth hee hath growen vp with me as with a father, and from my mothers wombe I haue bene a guide vnto her) ¹⁹ If I haue seene any perish for want of clothing, or any poore without couering, ²⁰ If his loynes haue not blessed me, because he was warmed with the fleece of my sheepe, ²¹ If I haue lift vp mine hande against the fatherlesse, when I saw that I might helpe him in the gate, ²² Let mine arme fal from my shoulder, and mine arme be broken from the bone. ²³ For Gods punishment was fearefull vnto me, and I could not be deliuered from his highnes. ²⁴ If I made gold mine hope, or haue sayd to the wedge of golde, Thou art my confidence, ²⁵ If I reioyced because my substance was great, or because mine hand had gotten much, ²⁶ If I did behold the sunne, when it shined, or the moone, walking in her brightnes, ²⁷ If mine heart did flatter me in secrete, or if my mouth did kisse mine hand, ²⁸ (This also had bene an iniquitie to be condemned: for I had denied the God aboue) ²⁹ If I reioyced at his destruction that hated me, or was mooued to ioye when euill came vpon him, ³⁰ Neither haue I suffred my mouth to sinne, by wishing a curse vnto his soule. ³¹ Did not the men of my Tabernacle say, Who shall giue vs of his flesh? we can not bee satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the streete, but I opened my doores vnto him, that went by the way. ³³ If I haue hid my sinne, as Adam, concealing mine iniquitie in my bosome, ³⁴ Though I could haue made afraid a great multitude, yet the most contemptible of the families did feare me: so I kept silence, and went not out of the doore. ³⁵ Oh that I had some to heare me! beholde my signe that the Almightie will witnesse for me: though mine aduersary should write a booke against me, ³⁶ Woulde not I take it vpon my shoulder, and binde it as a crowne vnto me? ³⁷ I will tell him the nomber of my goings, and goe vnto him as to a prince. ³⁸ If my lande cry against me, or the furrowes thereof complayne together, ³⁹ If I haue eaten the fruites thereof without siluer: or if I haue grieued the soules of the masters thereof, ⁴⁰ Let thistles growe in steade of wheate, and cockle in the stead of Barley. ³ O Lord my God, if I haue done this thing, if there be any wickednes in mine handes, ⁴ If I haue rewarded euill vnto him that had peace with mee, (yea I haue deliuered him that vexed me without cause) ⁵ Then let the enemie persecute my soule and take it: yea, let him treade my life downe vpon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.

¹⁷ All this is come vpon vs, yet doe wee not forget thee, neither deale wee falsly concerning thy couenant. ¹⁸ Our heart is not turned backe: neither our steps gone out of thy paths, ¹⁹ Albeit thou hast smitten vs downe into the place of dragons, and couered vs with the shadow of death. ²⁰ If wee haue forgotten the Name of our God, and holden vp our hands to a strange god, ²¹ Shall not God searche this out? for hee knoweth the secrets of the heart.

³ And saide, I beseeche thee, Lord, remember nowe howe I haue walked before thee in trueth, and with a perfite heart, and haue done that which is good in thy sight: and Hezekiah wept sore.

¹ And Paul behelde earnestly the Councill, and sayde, Men and brethren, I haue in all good conscience serued God vntill this day.

¹⁶ And herein I endeuour my selfe to haue alway a cleare conscience towarde God, and toward men.

¹ I say the trueth in Christ, I lye not, my conscience bearing mee witnes in the holy Ghost,

¹⁸ For they that are such, serue not the Lord Iesus Christ, but their owne bellies, and with faire speach and flattering deceiue the heartes of the simple. ¹⁹ For your obedience is come abroade among all: I am glad therefore of you: but yet I woulde haue you wise vnto that which is good, and simple concerning euill.

⁴ Neither stoode my woorde, and my preaching in the entising speach of mans wisdom, but in plaine euidence of the Spirite and of power, ⁵ That your faith should not be in the wisdome of men, but in the power of God.

¹³ Which things also we speake, not in the woordes which mans wisedome teacheth, but which the holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spirituall things with spirituall things.

⁴ For I know nothing by my selfe, yet am I not thereby iustified: but he that iudgeth me, is the Lord.

⁸ Therefore let vs keepe the feast, not with olde leauen, neither in the leauen of maliciousnes and wickednesse: but with the vnleauened bread of synceritie and trueth.

¹⁰ But by the grace of God, I am that I am: and his grace which is in me, was not in vaine: but I laboured more aboundantly then they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which is with me.

¹⁷ When I therefore was thus minded, did I vse lightnesse? or minde I those thinges which I minde, according to the flesh, that with me should be, Yea, yea, and Nay, nay?

¹⁷ For wee are not as many, which make marchandise of the woorde of God: but as of sinceritie, but as of God in ye sight of God speake we in Christ.

² But haue cast from vs ye clokes of shame, and walke not in craftines, neither handle we the worde of God deceitfully: but in declaration of the trueth we approue our selues to euery mans conscience in the sight of God.

⁸ This say I not by commandement, but because of the diligence of others: therefore prooue I the naturalnesse of your loue.

² And this I require you, that I neede not to be bolde when I am present, with that same confidence, wherewith I thinke to bee bolde against some, which esteeme vs as though wee walked according to the flesh. ³ Neuerthelesse, though wee walke in the flesh, yet we doe not warre after the flesh. ⁴ (For the weapons of our warrefare are not carnall, but mightie through God, to cast downe holdes)

³ But I feare least as the serpent beguiled Eue through his subtiltie, so your mindes shoulde be corrupt from the simplicitie that is in Christ.

¹⁵ And I will most gladly bestow, and will be bestowed for your soules: though the more I loue you, the lesse I am loued. ¹⁶ But bee it that I charged you not: yet for as much as I was craftie, I tooke you with guile. ¹⁷ Did I pill you by any of them whom I sent vnto you? ¹⁸ I haue desired Titus, and with him I haue sent a brother: did Titus pill you of any thing? walked we not in the selfe same spirit? walked we not in the same steppes? ¹⁹ Againe, thinke yee that wee excuse our selues vnto you? we speake before God in Christ. But wee doe all thinges, dearely beloued, for your edifying.

⁴ But let euery man prooue his owne worke: and then shall he haue reioycing in himselfe onely and not in another.

¹⁴ Stand therefore, and your loynes girded about with veritie, and hauing on the brest plate of righteousnesse,

¹⁰ That ye may alowe those things which are best, that ye may be pure, and without offence vntill the day of Christ,

¹⁰ Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily, and iustly, and vnblameably we behaued our selues among you that beleeue.

⁵ For the end of the commandement is loue out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith vnfained.

¹⁹ Hauing faith and a good conscience, which some haue put away, and as concerning faith, haue made shipwracke. ²⁰ Of whom is Hymeneus, and Alexander, whom I haue deliuered vnto Satan, that they might learne not to blaspheme.

⁷ In all things shewe thy selfe an ensample of good woorkes with vncorrupt doctrine, with grauitie, integritie,

¹⁸ Pray for vs: for we are assured that we haue a good conscience in all things, desiring to liue honestly.

¹³ Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew by good conuersation his workes in meekenesse of wisdome. ¹⁴ But if ye haue bitter enuying and strife in your hearts, reioyce not, neither be liars against the trueth. ¹⁵ This wisedome descendeth not from aboue, but is earthly, sensuall, and deuilish. ¹⁶ For where enuying and strife is, there is sedition, and all maner of euill workes. ¹⁷ But the wisedome that is from aboue, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easie to be intreated, full of mercie and good fruites, without iudging, and without hipocrisie. ¹⁸ And the fruite of righteousnesse is sowen in peace, of them that make peace.

⁶ But the Scripture offereth more grace, and therefore sayth, God resisteth the proude, and giueth grace to the humble.

¹⁶ Hauing a good coscience, that whe they speake euill of you as of euill doers, they may be ashamed, which slander your good conuersation in Christ.

²¹ Whereof the baptisme that nowe is, answering that figure, (which is not a putting away of the filth of the flesh, but a confident demaunding which a good conscience maketh to God) saueth vs also by the resurrection of Iesus Christ,

¹⁹ For thereby we know that we are of the trueth, and shall before him assure our hearts. ²⁰ For if our heart condemne vs, God is greater then our heart, and knoweth all things. ²¹ Beloued, if our heart condemne vs not, then haue we boldnes toward God. ²² And whatsoeuer we aske we receiue of him, because we keepe his commandements, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
