⁵ That the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.

⁹ The enemy said: I will pursue and overtake, I will divide the spoils, my soul shall have its fill: I will draw my sword, my hand shall slay them. ¹⁰ Thy wind blew and the sea covered them: they sunk as lead in the mighty waters.

²¹ Then the Philistines seized upon him, and forthwith pulled out his eyes, and led him bound in chains to Gaza, and shutting him up in prison made him grind. ²² And now his hair began to grow again, ²³ And the princes of the Philistines assembled together, to offer great sacrifices to Dagon their god, and to make merry, saying: Our god hath delivered our enemy Samson into our hands. ²⁴ And the people also seeing this, praised their god, and said the same: Our god hath delivered our adversary into our hands, him that destroyed our country, and killed very many. ²⁵ And rejoicing in their feasts, when they had now taken their good cheer, they commanded that Samson should be called, and should play before them. And being brought out of prison, he played before them; and they made him stand between two pillars. ²⁶ And he said to the lad that guided his steps: Suffer me to touch the pillars which support the whole house, and let me lean upon them, and rest a little. ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women, and all the princes of the Philistines were there. Moreover about three thousand persons of both sexes, from the roof and the higher part of the house, were beholding Samson's play. ²⁸ But he called upon the Lord, saying: O Lord God remember me, and restore to me now my former strength, O my God, that I may revenge myself on my enemies, and for the loss of my two eyes I may take one revenge. ²⁹ And laying hold on both the pillars on which the house rested, and holding the one with his right hand, and the other with his left, ³⁰ He said: Let me die with the Philistines. And when he had strongly shook the pillars, the house fell upon all the princes, and the rest of the multitude, that was there: and he killed many more at his death, than he had killed before in his life.

¹¹ And he declared to them the greatness of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and with how great glory the king had advanced him above all his princes and servants. ¹² And after this he said: Queen Esther also hath invited no other to the banquet with the king, but me: and with her I am also to dine to morrow with the king:

¹⁰ So Aman was hanged on the gibbet, which he had prepared for Mardochai: and the king's wrath ceased.

³ I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I cursed his beauty immediately.

¹² When it is yet in flower, and is not plucked u with the hand, it withereth before all herbs. ¹³ Even so are the ways of all that forget God, an the hope of the hypocrite shall perish:

¹⁹ For this is the joy of his way, that others may spring again out of the earth.

²⁹ He shall not be enriched, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he push his root in the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his branches, and he shall be taken away by the breath of his own mouth. ³¹ He shall not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he may be redeemed with any price. ³² Before his days be full he shall perish: and his hands shall wither away. ³³ He shall be blasted as a vine when its grapes are in the first flower, and as an olive tree that casteth its flower. ³⁴ For the congregation of the hypocrite is barren, and fire shall devour their tabernacles, who love to take bribes.

⁵ Shall not the light of the wicked be extinguished, and the flame of his fire not shine? ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and the lamp that is over him, shall be put out.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite if through covetousness he take by violence, and God deliver not his soul?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the inheritance of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty. ¹⁴ If his sons be multiplied, they shall be for the sword, and his grandsons shall not be filled with bread. ¹⁵ They that shall remain of him, shall be buried in death, and his widows shall not weep. ¹⁶ If he shall heap together silver as earth, and prepare raiment as clay, ¹⁷ He shall prepare indeed, but the just man shall be clothed with it: and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He hath built his house as a moth, and as a keeper he hath made a booth. ¹⁹ The rich man when he shall sleep shall take away nothing with him: he shall open his eyes and find nothing. ²⁰ Poverty like water shall take hold on him, a tempest shall oppress him in the night: ²¹ A burning wind shall take him up, and carry him away, and as a whirlwind shall snatch him from his place. ²² And he shall cast upon him, and shall not spare: out of his hand he would willingly flee. ²³ He shall clasp his hands upon him, and shall hiss at him, beholding his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked highly exalted, and lifted up like the cedars of Libanus. ³⁶ And I passed by, and lo, he was not: and I sought him and his place was not found.

¹⁸ But indeed for deceits thou hast put it to them: when they were lifted up thou hast cast them down. ¹⁹ How are they brought to desolation? they have suddenly ceased to be: they have perished by reason of their iniquity. ²⁰ As the dream of them that awake, O Lord; so in thy city thou shalt bring their image to nothing.

²¹ Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²⁰ And he that received the seed upon stony ground, is he that heareth the word, and immediately receiveth it with joy. ²¹ Yet hath he not root in himself, but is only for a time: and when there ariseth tribulation and persecution because of the word, he is presently scandalized.

²² And the people made acclamation, saying: It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And forthwith an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the honour to God: and, being eaten up by worms, he gave up the ghost.

⁴ But let every one prove his own work: and so he shall have glory in himself only and not in another.

¹⁶ But now you rejoice in your arrogancies. All such rejoicing is wicked.
