⁴⁴ Come, therefore, let us enter into a league; that it may be for a testimony between me and thee.

¹⁸ That day God made a covenant with Abram, saying: To thy seed will I give this land, from the river to Egypt even to the great river Euphrates.

²² At the same time Abimelech, and Phicol the general of his army, said to Abraham: God is with thee in all that thou dost. ²³ Swear therefore by God, that thou wilt not hurt me, nor my posterity, nor my stock: but according to the kindness that I have done to thee, thou shalt do to me, and to the land wherein thou hast lived a stranger. ²⁴ And Abraham said: I will swear. ²⁵ And he reproved Abimelech for a well of water, which his servants had taken away by force. ²⁶ And Abimelech answered: I knew not who did this thing: and thou didst not tell me, and I heard not of it till today. ²⁷ Then Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Abimelech: and both of them made a league. ²⁸ And Abraham set apart seven ewelambs of the flock. ²⁹ And Abimelech said to him: What mean these seven ewelambs which thou hast set apart? ³⁰ But he said: Thou shalt take seven ewelambs at my hand: that they may be a testimony for me, that I dug this well. ³¹ Therefore that place was called Bersabee; because there both of them did swear. ³² And they made a league for the well of oath.

²⁸ And they answered: We saw that the Lord is with thee, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us make a covenant, ²⁹ That thou do us no harm, as we on our part have touched nothing of thine, nor have done any thing to hurt thee; but with peace have sent thee away, increased with the blessing of the Lord. ³⁰ And he made them a feast, and after they had eaten and drunk: ³¹ Arising in the morning, they swore one to another: and Isaac sent them away peaceably to their own home.

⁴⁸ And Laban said: This heap shall be a witness between me and thee this day, and therefore the name thereof was called Galaad, that is, The witness heap.

⁵² Shall be a witness: this heap, I say, and the stone, be they for a testimony, if either I shall pass beyond it going towards thee, or thou shalt pass beyond it thinking harm to me.

¹⁹ Now therefore write you this canticle, and teach the children of Israel: that they may know it by heart, and sing it by mouth, and this song may be unto me for a testimony among the children of Israel.

²¹ And after many evils and afflictions shall have come upon them, this canticle shall answer them for a testimony, which no oblivion shall take away out of the mouth of their seed. For I know their thoughts, and what they are about to do this day, before that I bring them into the land which I have promised them.

²⁶ Take this book, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God: that it may be there for a testimony against thee.

²⁷ But for a testimony between us and you, and our posterity and yours, that we may serve the Lord, and that we may have a right to offer both holocausts, and victims and sacrifices of peace offerings: and that your children to morrow may not say to our children: You have no part in the Lord.

²⁵ Josue therefore on that day made a covenant, and set before the people commandments and judgments in Sichem. ²⁶ And he wrote all these things in the volume of the law of the Lord: and he took a great stone, and set it under the oak that was in the sanctuary of the Lord. ²⁷ And he said to all the people: Behold this stone shall be a testimony unto you, that it hath heard all the words of the Lord, which he hath spoken to you: lest perhaps hereafter you will deny it, and lie to the Lord your God.

¹⁴ And if I live, thou shalt shew me the kindness of the Lord: but if I die, ¹⁵ Thou shalt not take away thy kindness from my house for ever, when the Lord shall have rooted out the enemies of David, every one of them from the earth, may he take away Jonathan from his house, and may the Lord require it at the hands of David's enemies. ¹⁶ Jonathan therefore made a covenant with the house of David: and the Lord required it at the hands of David's enemies. ¹⁷ And Jonathan swore again to David, because he loved him: for he loved him as his own soul.
