¹² Καὶ (And) ἀναστενάξας (having sighed deeply) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit) αὐτοῦ (of Him), λέγει (He says), “Τί (Why) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this) ζητεῖ (seeks) σημεῖον (a sign)? ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰ (if) δοθήσεται (there will be given) τῇ (to the) γενεᾷ (generation) ταύτῃ (this) σημεῖον (a sign).”

³⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous) σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks for), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet). ⁴⁰ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) Ἰωνᾶς (Jonah) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κοιλίᾳ (belly) τοῦ (of the) κήτους (great fish) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) καὶ (and) τρεῖς (three) νύκτας (nights), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) καὶ (and) τρεῖς (three) νύκτας (nights).

⁴ γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous), σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah).” καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀπῆλθεν (He went away).

⁵ Καὶ (And) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around on) αὐτοὺς (them) μετ’ (with) ὀργῆς (anger), συλλυπούμενος* (being grieved) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) πωρώσει (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγει (He says) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man), “Ἔκτεινον (Stretch out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) (σου) (of you).” καὶ (And) ἐξέτεινεν (he stretched it out), καὶ (and) ἀπεκατεστάθη (was restored) ἡ (the) χεὶρ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁶ καὶ (And) ἐθαύμαζεν* (He was amazed) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀπιστίαν (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them). Καὶ (And) περιῆγεν (He was going) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages) κύκλῳ (around), διδάσκων (teaching).

³⁴ καὶ (and) ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) ἐστέναξεν (He sighed deeply), καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐφφαθά (Ephphatha)!”— ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is), “Διανοίχθητι (Be opened)!”

¹⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτοῖς (him), λέγει (He says), “Ὦ (O) γενεὰ (generation) ἄπιστος (unbelieving)! ἕως (Until) πότε (when) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you) ἔσομαι (will I be)? ἕως (Until) πότε (when) ἀνέξομαι (will I bear with) ὑμῶν (you)? φέρετε (Bring) αὐτὸν (him) πρός (to) με (Me).”

²⁹ Τῶν (Of the) δὲ (now) ὄχλων (crowds) ἐπαθροιζομένων (being pressed around together), ἤρξατο (He began) λέγειν (to say), “Ἡ (The) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this), γενεὰ (generation) πονηρά (an evil) ἐστιν (is); σημεῖον (a sign) ζητεῖ (it seeks after), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah). ³⁰ καθὼς (As) γὰρ (for) ἐγένετο (was) Ἰωνᾶς (Jonah) τοῖς (to the) Νινευίταις (Ninevites) σημεῖον (a sign), οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (will be) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) τῇ (to the) γενεᾷ (generation) ταύτῃ (this).

²⁹ Λέγει (Says) δὲ (however) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ‘Ἔχουσι (They have) Μωϋσέα (Moses) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets); ἀκουσάτωσαν (let them hear) αὐτῶν (them).’ ³⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Οὐχί (No), πάτερ (father) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐάν (if) τις (one) ἀπὸ (from) νεκρῶν (the dead) πορευθῇ (should go) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), μετανοήσουσιν (they will repent).’ ³¹ Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (however) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Εἰ (If) Μωϋσέως (Moses) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets) οὐκ (not) ἀκούουσιν (they hear), οὐδ’* (not even) ἐάν (if) τις (one) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἀναστῇ (should rise), πεισθήσονται (will they be persuaded).’”

⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἔκλαυσεν (He wept) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτήν (it),

⁶⁷ “Εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ), εἰπὸν (tell) ἡμῖν (us).” Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐὰν (If) ὑμῖν (you) εἴπω (I should tell), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (would you believe); ⁶⁸ ἐὰν (if) δὲ (then) ἐρωτήσω (I should ask you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀποκριθῆτε (would you answer). ⁶⁹ ἀπὸ (From) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now on) δὲ (also) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁷⁰ Εἶπαν (They said) δὲ (then) πάντες (all), “Σὺ (You) οὖν (then) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔφη (He was saying), “Ὑμεῖς (You) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am).”

³³ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) ὡς (when) εἶδεν (He saw) αὐτὴν (her) κλαίουσαν (weeping), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) συνελθόντας (having come with) αὐτῇ (her) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) κλαίοντας (weeping), ἐνεβριμήσατο (He was deeply moved) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) καὶ (and) ἐτάραξεν (troubled) ἑαυτόν (Himself). ³⁴ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ποῦ (Where) τεθείκατε (have you laid) αὐτόν (him).” Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), ἔρχου (come) καὶ (and) ἴδε (see).” ³⁵ Ἐδάκρυσεν (Wept) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus). ³⁶ Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Ἴδε (Behold) πῶς (how) ἐφίλει (He loved) αὐτόν (him)!” ³⁷ Τινὲς (Some) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶπαν (said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐδύνατο (was able) οὗτος (this man) ὁ (-) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τοῦ (of the) τυφλοῦ (blind), ποιῆσαι (to have caused) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) οὗτος (this one) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (should have died)?” ³⁸ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again), ἐμβριμώμενος (being deeply moved) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself), ἔρχεται (comes) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) σπήλαιον (a cave), καὶ (and) λίθος (a stone) ἐπέκειτο (was lying) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτῷ (it).

³⁷ Τοσαῦτα (So many) δὲ (however) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σημεῖα (signs) πεποιηκότος (having been done) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them), οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευον (they believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him), ³⁸ ἵνα (so that) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (said): “Κύριε (Lord), τίς (who) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) τῇ (the) ἀκοῇ (report) ἡμῶν (of us)? καὶ (And) ὁ (the) βραχίων (arm) Κυρίου (of the Lord) τίνι (to whom) ἀπεκαλύφθη (has been revealed)?” ³⁹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), οὐκ (not) ἠδύναντο (they were able) πιστεύειν (to believe), ὅτι (for) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah): ⁴⁰ “Τετύφλωκεν (He has blinded) αὐτῶν (of them) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), καὶ (and) ἐπώρωσεν (has hardened) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes), καὶ (and) νοήσωσιν (understand) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart), καὶ (and) στραφῶσιν (turn), καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).” ⁴¹ Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) ὅτι (because) εἶδεν (he saw) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him). ⁴² ὅμως (Nevertheless), μέντοι (indeed) καὶ (even) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him); ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) Φαρισαίους (Pharisees) οὐχ (not) ὡμολόγουν (they were confessing), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἀποσυνάγωγοι (put out of the synagogue) γένωνται (they might be); ⁴³ ἠγάπησαν (they loved) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) μᾶλλον (more) ἤπερ (than) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).
