¹² teaching us that denying ungodliness, and worldly desires, we should live soberly, and righteously, and piously in this present world;

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits becoming: penitents: and do not say within your selves, ⁹ "We have Abraham for our father:" for I tell you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. ¹⁰ And now the ax is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore, which yieldeth not good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire.

¹⁹ Whosoever therefore shall break one of the left of these commandments, and thereby teach men so to do, he shall be esteemed very little in the kingdom of heaven: but whoever shall do as well as teach them, he shall be accounted great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you, that unless your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²⁴ Then said Jesus to his disciples, If any one is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me:

²⁰ and teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.

⁶ And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁷⁵ all the days of our life.

⁹ And now the ax is laid to the root of the trees: every tree therefore which doth not yield good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ And he saith unto them, Let him that hath two coats, give one to him that hath none, and let him that hath food do the like. ¹² And there came publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? ¹³ And He said unto them, Exact no more than what is appointed you.

²⁵ And when they found Him on the other side of the Sea, they said unto Him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

³⁰ I shall not have much more conversation with you: for the prince of this world is coming; not that he hath any thing in me,

¹⁴ I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I do not pray that Thou wouldest take them out of the world, but that thou wouldest keep them from the evil.

¹⁶ And on this account do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence both towards God and towards men.

²⁵ And as he was reasoning of justice, temperance, and a future judgement, Felix trembled, and said, Go thy way for this time, and I will take a proper opportunity to call for thee again.

⁴ Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in newness of life: ⁵ for if we have been planted together in the resemblance of his death, so shall we be also of his resurrection. ⁶ Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that we might no longer be inslaved to sin:

¹² Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to obey it in the lusts thereof.

¹⁹ I speak after the manner of men, because of the infirmity of your flesh: as ye have yielded your bodies servants to impurity and iniquity to work iniquity; so now present your bodies servants to righteousness, unto holiness.

¹³ for if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if by the Spirit ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

² And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may experience what is the good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

¹² The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. ¹³ Let us behave decently as being in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lasciviousness, not in strife and envying.

⁹ What! know ye not that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor sodomites, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor rapacious persons, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the spirit of our God.

¹² For this is our rejoicing, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and pious sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and especially towards you.

¹ Having therefore, my beloved, these promises, let us purify ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

⁴ who gave himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from the present evil world, according to the will of our God and Father:

²⁴ And they, that are Christ's, have crucified the flesh with it's passions and desires.

⁴ according as he hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unblameable before Him in love:

² in which ye formerly walked after the manner of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that still operates in the children of disobedience:

²² which according to your former conversation was corrupted with deceitful lusts, ²³ and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; ²⁴ and to put on the new man, which according to the image of God is created in righteousness, and true holiness. ²⁵ Wherefore putting away lying, speak ye every one truth to his neighbor; for we are all members of one society.

²² yet now hath He reconciled in the body of his flesh, through death, to present you holy, and unblameable, and unreproveable in his sight:

⁵ Mortify therefore your members that are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, disorderly passion, evil concupiscence, and insatiable desire, which is indeed idolatry: ⁶ for which things the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience. ⁷ In which ye also formerly walked, when ye lived among them. ⁸ But now put away all these also, wrath, animosity, malice, calumny, and filthy discourse out of your mouth. ⁹ Lie not one to another, seeing ye have put off the old man with his evil practices;

⁷ For God hath not called us to impurity, but to holiness.

⁹ But as to brotherly love, ye need not that I write unto you; for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

¹² Let no one have cause to despise thy youth; but he thou an example to believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

¹⁷ Charge them, that are rich in this world, not to be high-minded nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who richly affords us all things for enjoyment: charge them to do good,

¹² And indeed all, that are desirous to live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.

¹⁰ through love of this world, and is gone to Thessalonica; as is Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia: Luke only is with me.

³ For we also were formerly foolish, disobedient, going astray, enslaved to various disorderly appetites and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹¹ And they shall not teach every one his neighbour, and every one his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the lest even to the greatest of them.

⁸ Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you: cleanse your hands, O sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded. ⁹ Be grieved, and mourn, and weep: let your mirth be turned into mourning, and your joy to sadness. ¹⁰ Be humbled before the Lord, and He will exalt you.

¹⁴ as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts in your ignorance: ¹⁵ but as He who hath called you is holy, be ye also holy in all your conversation: since it is written, ¹⁶ Be ye holy, for I am holy. ¹⁷ And if ye call upon the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: ¹⁸ knowing that ye were redeemed from your vain conversation learned by tradition from your fathers, not with corruptible things, as silver and gold;

¹¹ Dearly beloved, I exhort you as strangers and sojourners here, to abstain from carnal lusts, which war against the soul: ¹² having a good conversation among the Gentiles; that whereas they speak against you as evil-doers, they may glorify God in the day of their visitation, on account of the good works which they behold in you.

² that he should no longer live the rest of his time in the flesh according to the lusts of men, but after the will of God. ³ For the time past of our life is sufficient for us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, inordinate desires, excess of wine, revellings, drunkenness, and abominable idolatries: ⁴ in which they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, and therefore speak evil of you: ⁵ who shall give an account to Him, who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

⁴ by which are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye may become partakers of a divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. ⁵ And to this giving all diligence, add to your faith fortitude; ⁶ and to fortitude knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience piety; ⁷ and to piety brotherly affection; and to brotherly affection charity. ⁸ For if these be in you and abound, they will not suffer you to be idle, nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁹ iniquitous deeds) then the Lord knoweth how to deliver the pious from temptation, and to reserve the wicked to the day of judgement to be punished:

²⁰ For if, after they had escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled and vanquished by them, their last state is worse than the first; ²¹ for it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than when they knew it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² But it is happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog is returned to his own vomit, and, The swine that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

¹¹ Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness,

⁶ He that saith, he abideth in Him, ought himself also so to walk even as He walked.

¹⁵ Love not the world, nor the things that are in the world; for if any one love the world to excess, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the desire of the flesh, and the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but of the world. ¹⁷ And the world passeth away, and the desire of it: but he, that doth the will of God, abideth for ever.

²⁷ But the unction, which ye have received from Him, abideth in you; and therefore ye have no need that any should teach you: since this very unction teacheth you concerning all things, and is truth and not falshood; even as that hath taught you, abide in Him.

¹⁹ We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth under the wicked one.

¹⁸ that in the latter days there will be scoffers, walking according to their own impious lusts.

¹² Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
