¹ After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. ² Now there is at Jerusalem near the sheep-market a pool, called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticos about it. ³ In these lay a great number of people that were infirm, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. ⁴ For an angel descended at a certain season into the pool, and moved the water; the first therefore that went in after the disturbing of the water, was cured of whatever malady he laboured under. ⁵ And there was a man who had been under illness thirty eight years. ⁶ Jesus seeing him lie there, and knowing that he had been now a long time ill, saith unto him, Dost thou desire to be cured? ¹³ but he, that was healed, did not know who it was: for Jesus had withdrawn himself, there being many people in the place. ¹⁴ Afterwards Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art healed; sin no more, least something worse befal thee. ¹⁵ And the man went away, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had healed him. ¹⁶ And for this did the Jews persecute Jesus, and endeavoured to put Him to death; because He had done these things on the sabbath-day. ¹⁷ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh without intermission, and so do I. ¹⁸ For this therefore the Jews sought the more to kill Him, because He had not only broken the sabbath, but had also called God his own Father, making Himself equal with God. ¹⁹ Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for whatsoever He doth, these also the Son doth in like manner. ²⁰ For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth Him all things, which He Himself doth: and He will shew Him greater than these, that ye may wonder. ²¹ For as the Father raiseth up the dead and giveth life: even so the Son maketh alive whom He pleaseth. ²² For neither doth the Father judge any one, but hath committed all judgement to the Son; ²³ that all men may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father: he, that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father that sent Him. ²⁴ Verily, verily I say unto you, he, that heareth my word, and believeth in Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death to life. ²⁵ Verily, verily I tell you, that the time is coming, and even now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father hath life in Himself, so hath He given also to the Son to have life in Himself. ²⁷ And hath given Him authority also to execute judgement, because He is the Son of man. ²⁸ Wonder not at this; for the time is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, ²⁹ and shall come forth, they that have done good to the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil to the resurrection of damnation. ³⁰ I can do nothing of my self: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father that hath sent me. ³¹ If I alone bear witness of my self, my testimony is not true in law: ³² but there is another who testifieth concerning me; and I know that the testimony, which he giveth concerning me, is true. ³³ Ye your selves sent unto John, and he bore witness to the truth: ³⁴ though I need not testimony from man; but I say these things that ye may be saved. ³⁵ He was indeed a burning and shining light, and for a while ye willingly rejoiced in his light. ³⁶ But I have a testimony greater than John's: for the works which the Father hath given me to perform, the very works which I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. ³⁷ And the Father who sent me, hath Himself borne witness of me: and yet ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. ³⁸ And ye have not his word abiding in you; because ye believe not Him, whom He hath sent. ³⁹ Ye search the scriptures; for ye think that in them ye have eternal life: ⁴⁰ and they testify of me: and yet ye will not come to me, that ye may have life. ⁴¹ Though I desire not applause from men: ⁴² but I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. ⁴³ I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another should come in his own name, him ye will receive. ⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who receive applause from each other, and the glory which is from God only, ye seek not? ⁴⁵ Think not that I shall accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. ⁴⁶ For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote concerning me: ⁴⁷ but if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

⁵ Then went, out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan, ⁶ and they were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ But when he saw many of the pharisees and sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

³¹ So when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon his glorious throne: ³² and all nations shall be assembled before Him; and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats: ³³ and He shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. ³⁴ Then will the king say to them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: ³⁵ for I was famishing, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; ³⁶ I was naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye took care of me; I was in prison, and ye visited me. ³⁷ Then will the righteous answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? ³⁸ and when did we see thee a stranger, and took thee in? ³⁹ or naked, and clothed thee? and when did we see thee sick, or in prison, and visited thee? ⁴⁰ And the king replying will say unto them, Verily I declare unto you, inasmuch as ye did it to one of the lest of these my brethren, ye did it to me. ⁴¹ Then will He say also to those on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² for I was famishing, and ye gave me nothing to eat; I was a-thirst, and ye gave me no drink; ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye took no care of me. ⁴⁴ Then will they also answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee famishing, or a-thirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not relieve thee? ⁴⁵ Then will He reply to them, saying, Verily I tell you, inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the lest of these, ye did it not to me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life everlasting.

²⁶ And I have made known to them thy name, and will farther make it known; that the love wherewith Thou hast loved me, may be in them, and I also in them.

¹ Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. ² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

"The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart." This is the word of faith which we preach: that if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, ⁹ and believe in thine heart, that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. ¹⁰ For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. ¹¹ For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on Him, shall not be ashamed. ¹² For there is no difference of Jew and Greek: for He being Lord of all is bountiful to all that call upon Him. ¹³ For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

²² If any one love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be made a curse.

⁸ For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befel us in Asia, that we were exceedingly pressed above our strength, so that we despaired even of life: ⁹ but we had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we might not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead:

⁹ And He said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is manifested in thy weakness." With the greatest pleasure therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ¹⁰ And therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, and in straits for the sake of Christ: for when I am thus weak, then am I made strong.

¹⁴ and the love of God, and the communication of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

²¹ Tell me, you that are so desirous to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? ²² where it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by a servant, and one by a free-woman? ²³ But he who was of the servant, was born according to the course of nature; whereas the son of the free-woman was by virtue of the promise. ²⁴ Which things are figurative; for these persons are emblems of the two covenants, the one from mount Sinai, bringing forth children unto bondage, which is Hagar: for this name Hagar, ²⁵ a rock, is expressive of mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to the present Jerusalem, which is in bondage with her children. ²⁶ But the Jerusalem above is represented by the free-woman, which is the mother of us all. ²⁷ For it is written, Rejoice thou barren, that for a while didst not bear, break forth and cry aloud for joy, thou that didst not travail with child; for many more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath an husband." ²⁸ Now we, brethren, like Isaac, are children of the promise. ²⁹ But as then he that was born after the flesh, persecuted him who was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. ³⁰ But what saith the scripture? "Cast out the servant and her son: for the son of the servant shall not inherit with the son of the free-woman." ³¹ Now we, my brethren, are not children of the servant, but of the free-woman.

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, such as, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, ²⁰ lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, enmities, strifes, emulations, animosities, contentions, divisions, ²¹ heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and the like: of which I forewarn you, as I have also told you before, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁸ He then, who soweth to his flesh, shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he, that soweth to the Spirit, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. ⁹ And let us not be weary in doing good: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. ¹⁰ And therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, but especially to those who are of the houshold of faith.

¹² that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. ¹³ In whom ye also trusted, when ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also when ye believed, ye were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise,

¹⁸ and enlighten the eyes of your understanding; that ye may know, what is the hope of his calling, and how rich the glory of his inheritance in the saints; ¹⁹ and what the exceeding greatness of his power towards us who believe, according to the energy of his mighty strength; ²⁰ which He exerted in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at his own right hand in heavenly places, ²¹ far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: ²² and hath put all things under his feet, and given Him to be head over all things to the church; ²³ which is his body, the complete work of Him, who filleth all in all.

⁵ hath made us alive in Christ, even when we were dead in trespasses, (for by grace ye are saved) and hath raised us up together,

¹⁶ that He would grant you, according to his glorious riches, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit, as to the inner man;

¹⁴ Wherefore He saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

²⁴ Grace be with all that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.

³ Do nothing through strife or vain-glory, but in lowliness of mind each esteeming others better than themselves.

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another by psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude singing in your hearts to the Lord.

⁷ and to you, who are in trouble, rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven, ⁸ with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on those who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁹ who shall be punished with everlasting destruction, by the presence of the Lord and by his glorious power: ¹⁰ in that day, when He shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe; because our testimony among you was believed.
