²⁸ Take heed therefore to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the holy Spirit hath appointed you bishops, to feed the church of God, which He purchased with his own blood.

⁶ "And thou Bethlehem in the land of Juda art not the meanest among the cities of the princes of Juda; for out of thee shall come forth a ruler, that shall feed my people Israel."

¹⁸ And I also say unto thee, as thou art called Peter, so upon this rock, which thou hast confessed, will I build my church, and the gates of death shall not prevail against it.

⁹ But look to yourselves; for they will deliver you up to councils, and synagogues: and ye shall be scourged, and set before governors and kings on my account, for a testimony against them.

³² Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's pleasure to give you the kingdom.

³⁴ Take heed to yourselves, least at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and the cares of life, and so that day should come upon you unawares:

¹⁵ Now when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon son of Jonas, dost thou love me more than these? He saith unto Him, Yes, Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. ¹⁶ He saith to him again the second time, Simon son of Jonas, dost thou love me? He saith unto Him, Yes, Lord, Thou knowest that I love Thee. ¹⁷ He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, dost thou love me? ² and as they were ministring to the Lord, and fasting, the holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul, for the work to which I have called them.

²³ And when they had appointed them elders in every church, praying and fasting, they recommended them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.

¹⁷ But he sent from Miletus to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.

²⁹ For I know this, that after my departure grievous wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

² even to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is both their Lord and ours;

²⁶ I therefore so run, not as unobserved: I so fight, not as one that beateth the air: ²⁷ but I mortify my body and bring it into subjection, least after having preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

³² Behave inoffensively both to the Jews, and to the Greeks, and to the church of God.

²² What! have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or do ye despise the church of God, and shame those that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

⁸ For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; ⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; ¹⁰ to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another the discerning of spirits; to another various kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: ¹¹ but all these worketh that one and the same Spirit distributing to every one in particular as He sees fit.

²⁸ And God hath placed you accordingly in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, and various kinds of tongues. ²⁹ Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? ³⁰ have all miraculous powers? have all the gifts of healing? do all speak many languages? do all interpret? but ye are all zealous for the best gifts. ³¹ Though I will shew you a way yet more excellent.

⁹ not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

¹³ For ye have heard of my conversation formerly in Judaism, that I outragiously persecuted the church of God, and laid it waste:

⁷ in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the remission of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

¹⁴ who is the pledge of our inheritance, till the redemption of his purchased possession, to the praise of his glory.

¹¹ And therefore He gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers; to qualify holy men for the work of the ministry,

¹ Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus, which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

¹⁴ in whom we have redemption by his blood, even the remission of sins.

¹⁷ And say ye to Archippus, Look well to the ministry, which thou hast received of the Lord, that thou fulfil it.

² A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, sober, prudent, grave,

⁵ (for if any one know not how to govern his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

¹⁵ But if I should be retarded, that thou mayst know how thou oughtest to behave in the house of God, the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. ¹⁶ And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up into glory.

¹⁴ Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

¹⁶ Take heed to thyself, and to thy doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this, thou wilt both save thyself and those that hear thee.

¹⁷ Let the elders, who preside well, be counted worthy of double honor, especially those that labour in preaching and teaching.

⁷ For a bishop must be blameless as the steward of God, not self-willed, not passionate, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of sordid gain:

¹² nor by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption for us. ¹³ For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purification of the flesh; ¹⁴ how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself spotless to God, purify your conscience from dead works, that ye may serve the living God?

¹⁵ looking to it, least there be any one falling short of the grace of God, least any root of bitterness springing up should be troublesome, and by it many be defiled:

¹⁷ Be ruled by those that are your guides, and submit to them: for they watch for your souls; (as those that must give an account) that they may do it with joy and not with uneasiness: for this were unprofitable for you.

¹⁸ knowing that ye were redeemed from your vain conversation learned by tradition from your fathers, not with corruptible things, as silver and gold; ¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

⁹ But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should declare the glories of Him, who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

²⁵ For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now turned unto the shepherd and bishop of your souls.

² taking the episcopal charge of it, not by constraint, but willingly; not for shameful lucre, but with a ready mind: ³ nor as lording it over the people, but being examples to the flock.

⁷ but if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have communion with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

⁹ And they sung a new song, saying, Worthy art thou to take the book, and to open its seals; for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation;
