³³ who, through faith, subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions,

¹⁶ Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his Seed. He saith not, "And to seeds," as of many; but as of One, "and to your Seed"; which is Christ.

¹⁷ The Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the proclamation might be fully announced, and that all the gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of a lion.

¹² that ye may not become slothful, but imitators of those who, through faith and long-suffering, inherit the promises. ¹³ For God, when making a promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, swore by Himself, ¹⁴ saying, "Surely, blessing, I will bless you; and multiplying, I will multiply you." ¹⁵ And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

³⁶ For ye have need of patience, that, after having done the will of God, ye may receive the promise.

⁴ By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he received witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he, being dead, is still speaking. ⁵ By faith Enoch was translated, so as not to see death; and he was not found, because God translated him; for, it has been witnessed to him that, before his translation, he had been well-pleasing to God. ⁶ And, apart from faith, it is impossible to please Him; for he that comes to God must believe that He is, and that He becomes a rewarder to those who seek after Him. ⁷ By faith Noah, being divinely instructed concerning things not yet seen, moved with fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house; through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. ⁸ By faith Abraham, when called, obeyed to go forth into the place which he was about to receive for an inheritance; and he went forth, not knowing whither he was going.

¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when tried, has offered up Isaac; yea, he who gladly received the promises was offering up his only begotten son,

⁸ Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, is going about, seeking whom he may devour;
