¹⁹ Think ye all this time that we are excusing ourselves to you? Before God in Christ we are speaking; and all, beloved, for your edification.

¹ I am speaking a truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit—

¹⁹ not avenging yourselves, beloved, but give place to the wrath of God: for it has been written, "Vengeance is Mine; I will recompense," saith the Lord.

¹² If others partake of this authority over you, do not we still more? But we used not this right; but we bear all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the Gospel of Christ. ¹³ Know ye not that those who are occupied upon sacred things eat of the things of the temple? and that those who wait at the altar partake with the altar? ¹⁴ Even so did the Lord ordain, that those who proclaim the Gospel should live by the Gospel. ¹⁵ But I have used none of these things; and I wrote not these things, that it may be so done in my case; for it were good for me rather to die, than that any one should make my glorying void. ¹⁶ For, if I proclaim the Gospel, it is not to me a matter of boasting; for necessity is laid upon me; for woe is to me, if I proclaim not the Gospel. ¹⁷ For, if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but, if unwillingly, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. ¹⁸ What, then, is my reward? That, when proclaiming the Gospel, I may make the Gospel without charge, to the end that I may not fully use my right in the Gospel. ¹⁹ For, being free from all men, I made myself servant to all, that I might gain the more. ²⁰ And, to the Jews, I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to those under law, as under law (not being myself under law), that I might gain those under law; ²¹ to those without law, as without law (not being without law to God, but under law to Christ), that I might gain those without law. ²² To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I may, by all means, save some. ²³ And I am doing all things for the Gospel's sake, that I may become a partaker thereof with others.

¹⁴ Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

³³ even as I also, in all things, please all men: not seeking my own profit, but that of the many, that they may be saved.

²⁶ What is it, then, brethren? When ye come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edification.

¹ Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? Or need we, as do some, commendatory letters to you, or from you?

¹² We are not again commending ourselves to you, but giving you occasion of glorying on our behalf, that ye may have something suited to those who glory in appearance, and not in heart. ¹³ For whether we were beside ourselves, it was to God; or whether we are of sober mind, it is for you.

¹ Having, therefore, these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

⁸ For, even if I glory somewhat more abundantly concerning our authority—which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for tearing you down—I shall not be put to shame;

¹⁰ As the truth of Christ is in me, this glorying shall not be stopped in regard to me in the regions of Achaia.

³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who is blessed forevermore, knoweth that I lie not.

¹⁵ And I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I to be loved the less?

¹⁰ For this cause, I write these things while absent; that I may not, when present, deal sharply according to the authority which the Lord gave me for building up, and not casting down.

¹ Therefore, my brethren, beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.
