⁵ He saved us, not for upright deeds that we had done, but in accordance with His mercy, through the bath of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

⁵⁰ He shows His mercy from age to age to those who fear him.

⁵⁴ He has helped His servant Israel, so as to remember mercy,

⁷² to show mercy to our forefathers, and carry out His sacred covenant,

⁷⁸ Because the heart of our God is merciful. And so the day will dawn upon us from on high,

²⁷ Then he answered, "You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole strength, and your whole mind, and your neighbor as you do yourself." ²⁸ He said to him, "You have answered correctly. Continue to do this, and you will live." ²⁹ But he, as he wished to justify his question, said, "But who is my neighbor?"

³ Jesus answered him, "I most solemnly say to you, no one can ever see the kingdom of God, unless he is born from above." ⁴ Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot again enter his mother's womb and be born, can he?" ⁵ Jesus answered, "I most solemnly say to you, no one can ever get into the kingdom of God, unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

²⁰ Because no human creature can be brought into right standing with God by observing the law. For all the law can do is to make men conscious of sin.

²⁸ For we hold that a man is brought into right standing with God by faith, that observance of the law has no connection with it.

⁵ but the man who does no work, but simply puts his faith in Him who brings the ungodly into right standing with Himself, has his faith credited to him as right standing.

¹¹ For even before the twin sons were born, and though they had done nothing either good or bad, that God's purpose in accordance with His choice might continue to stand, conditioned not on men's actions but on God's calling them,

¹⁶ So one's destiny does not depend on his own willing or strenuous actions but on God's having mercy on him.

³⁰ What are we then to conclude? That heathen peoples who were not in search for right standing with God have obtained it, and that a right standing conditioned on faith;

⁶ But if it is by His unmerited favor, it is not at all conditioned on what they have done. If that were so, His favor would not be favor at all.

² Stop living in accordance with the customs of this world, but by the new ideals that mold your minds continue to transform yourselves, so as to find and follow God's will; that is, what is good, well-pleasing to Him, and perfect.

¹¹ And these are just the characters some of you used to be. But now you have washed yourselves clean, you have been consecrated, you are now in right standing with God, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.

¹⁶ because we know that a man does not come into right standing with God by doing what the law commands, but by simple trust in Christ, we too have trusted in Christ Jesus, in order to come into right standing with God by simple trust in Christ and not by doing what the law commands, because by doing what the law commands no man can come into right standing with God.

¹⁶ Now the promises were made to Abraham and his descendant. It does not say, "and to your descendants," in the plural, but in the singular, "and to your descendant," that is, Christ. ¹⁷ I mean this: The law which was given four hundred and thirty years later could not annul the contract which had already been ratified by God, so as to cancel the promise. ¹⁸ For if our inheritance depends on the law, it can no longer depend on the promise. But it was by promise that God so graciously bestowed it upon Abraham. ¹⁹ Then what about the law? It was added later on to increase transgressions, until the descendant to whom the promise was made should come, enacted through the agency of angels in the person of an intermediary. ²⁰ Though an intermediary implies more than one party, yet God is only one. ²¹ Is the law then contrary to God's promises? Of course not. For if a law had been given that was able to impart life, surely, then, right standing would have come through law.

⁶ so that we might praise the splendid favor which He has shown us in His beloved Son. ⁷ It is through union with Him that we have redemption by His blood and the forgiveness of our shortcomings, in accordance with the generosity of His unmerited favor

⁴ But God, who is so rich in mercy on account of the great love He has for us,

⁸ For it is by His unmerited favor through faith that you have been saved; it is not by anything that you have done, it is the gift of God. ⁹ It is not the result of what anyone can do, so that no one can boast of it.

²³ and to have a new attitude of mind

²⁶ to consecrate her, after cleansing her through His word, as pictured in the water bath,

¹⁰ and have put on the new self which is in the process of being made new in the likeness of its Creator, so that you may attain a perfect knowledge of Him.

⁹ For He saved us and called us with a holy call, not in accordance with anything that we had done, but in accordance with His own purpose and unmerited favor which was shown us through union with Christ Jesus eternal ages ago,

⁴ But when the goodness and lovingkindness of God our Saviour were brought to light,

¹⁶ So let us continue coming with courage to the throne of God's unmerited favor to obtain His mercy and to find His spiritual strength to help us when we need it.

⁶ and then have fallen by the wayside -- it is impossible, I say, to keep on restoring them to their first repentance, since they continue to crucify the Son of God to their detriment and hold Him up to contempt.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In accordance with His great mercy He has begotten us anew to an ever living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead;

¹⁰ Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once His mercy had not been shown you, but now it has.

²¹ Baptism, which corresponds to this figure, now saves you, too -- I do not mean the mere removal of physical stains, but the craving for a clear conscience toward God -- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
