¹⁴ For sin must not any longer exert its mastery over you, for now you are not living as slaves to law but as subjects to God's favor.

²¹ And she will have a son, and you must name Him Jesus, for it is He who is to save His people from their sins."

¹⁷ For while the law was given through Moses, spiritual blessing and truth have come through Jesus Christ.

³⁶ So if the Son sets you free, you will be really free.

¹⁹ Now we know that everything the law says is spoken to those who are under its authority, that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world be held responsible to God. ²⁰ Because no human creature can be brought into right standing with God by observing the law. For all the law can do is to make men conscious of sin.

¹⁶ So it is conditioned on faith, that it might be in accordance with God's unmerited favor, so that the promise might be in force for all the descendants of Abraham, not only for those who belong to the law party but also for those who belong to the faith group of Abraham. He is the father of us all,

²⁰ Then law crept in to multiply the offense. Though sin has multiplied, yet God's favor has surpassed it and overflowed, ²¹ so that just as sin had reigned by death, so His favor too might reign in right standing with God which issues in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹² Accordingly, sin must not continue to reign over your mortal bodies, so as to make you continue to obey their evil desires,

¹⁵ What are we to conclude? Are we to keep on sinning, because we are not living as slaves to law but as subjects to God's favor? Never!

⁴ So, my brothers, you too in the body of Christ have ended your relation to the law, so that you may be married to another husband, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. ⁵ For when we were living in accordance with our lower nature, the sinful passions that were aroused by the law were operating in the parts of our bodies to make us bear fruit that leads to death. ⁶ But now we have been freed from our relation to the law; we have ended our relation to that by which we once were held in bonds, so that we may serve in a new spiritual way and not in the old literalistic way. ⁷ What are we then to conclude? Is the law sin? Of course not! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I should not have learned what sin was, for I should not have known what an evil desire was, if the law had not said, "You must not have an evil desire." ⁸ Sin found its rallying point in that command and stirred within me every sort of evil desire, for without law, sin is lifeless. ⁹ I was once alive when I had no connection with the law, but when the command came, sin revived, and then I died; ¹⁰ and so, in my case, the command which should have meant life turned out to mean death. ¹¹ For sin found its rallying point in that command and through it deceived me and killed me.

² For the life-giving power of the Spirit through union with Christ Jesus has set us free from the power of sin and death.

¹² So, brothers, we are under obligations, but not to our lower nature to live by the standard set by it;

⁶ But if it is by His unmerited favor, it is not at all conditioned on what they have done. If that were so, His favor would not be favor at all.

⁶ He has qualified even me as a minister of the new covenant, which is not a written but a spiritual covenant. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. ⁷ Now if the old religious service which resulted in death, although its law was carved in letters of stone, was introduced with a splendor so great that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on Moses' face because of the splendor that was fading from it, ⁸ why should not this spiritual service be attended with much greater splendor? ⁹ For if the service connected with condemnation had such splendor, the service resulting in right standing with God will surely far surpass it in splendor.

²³ But before this faith came, we were kept locked up under the law, in preparation for the faith which was to be unveiled.

⁴ but when the proper time had come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born subject to law, ⁵ to ransom those who were subject to law, so that we might be adopted as sons.

²¹ Tell me, you who want to be subject to law, will you not listen to what the law says?

¹⁸ But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law.

¹⁴ who gave Himself for us to ransom us from all iniquity and purify for Himself a people to be His very own, zealous of good works.

¹⁰ 'For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel in those days,' says the Lord; 'I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. And nevermore will each one need to teach his fellow-citizen,
