¹⁷ So faith comes from hearing what is told, and hearing through the message about Christ.

²⁴ And He was saying to them: "Take care what you hear. The measure you give will come back to you, and more besides.

¹¹ This is what the story means: The seed is God's message.

²¹ Then He answered them, "My mother and my brothers are those who listen to God's message and practice it."

²⁸ But He said, "Yes, but better still, blessed are those who listen to God's message and practice it!"

²⁹ But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.' ³⁰ But he pleaded, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone went to them from the dead, they would repent.' ³¹ Then he answered, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced, even if someone rises from the dead.'"

¹⁶ For I am not ashamed of the good news, for it is God's power for the salvation of everyone who trusts, of the Jew first and then of the Greek.

¹⁴ But how can people call upon One in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in One about whom they have not heard? And how can people hear without someone to preach to them?

¹⁸ For the message of the cross is nonsense to those who are in the process of being destroyed, but it is the power of God to those who are in the process of being saved. ¹⁹ For the Scripture says: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the learning of the learned." ²⁰ So where is your philosopher? Where is your man of letters? Where is your logician of this age? Has not God shown up the nonsense of the world's wisdom? ²¹ For since in accordance with the wisdom of God the world had never in reality, by means of its wisdom, come to know God, God chose through the nonsense of the message proclaimed, to save the people who put their faith in Him. ²² While Jews are demanding spectacular signs and Greeks are searching for philosophy, ²³ we are preaching the Christ who was crucified -- a message that is a trap-stick to the Jews and nonsense to the Greeks, ²⁴ but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks alike, the Christ who is God's power and God's wisdom.

¹⁷ Now who is qualified for such a task? I am, for I am not a peddler of God's message, like the most of them, but like a man of sincerity, like a man that is sent from God and living in His presence, in union with Christ I speak His message.

² I want to ask you only this one thing: Did you receive the Spirit by doing what the law commands, or by believing the message you heard?

⁵ Now when He supplies you with the Spirit and performs His wonder-works among you, does He do it because you do what the law commands, or because you believe the message that you heard --

⁴ because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all God's people, ⁵ because of your hope of what is laid up for you in heaven. Long ago you heard of this hope through the message of the good news ⁶ which reached you, and since it is bearing fruit and growing among you, just as it is all over the world, from the day you first heard of God's favor and in reality came to know it,

¹⁶ Let the message of Christ continue to live in you in all its wealth of wisdom; keep on teaching it to one another and training one another in it with thankfulness, in your hearts singing praise to God with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

¹³ For another reason too, we, as far as we are concerned, are constantly giving thanks to God; that is, when you received the message you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the message of men but as the message of God, as it really is, which keeps on working in you who believe.

¹³ We ought always to be thanking God for you, brothers dearly loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through the Spirit's consecration of you and through your faith in the truth, ¹⁴ and to this end He called you by our preaching of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹² For God's message is alive and full of power in action, sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the depths of soul and spirit, to the dividing of joints and marrow, and passing judgment on the thoughts and purposes of the heart. ¹³ No creature of His can escape God's sight, but everything is bare and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we have to give account.

¹⁸ In accordance with His will He made us His children by the message of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits among His creatures. ¹⁹ You must understand this, my dearly loved brothers. Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to get angry; ²⁰ for a man's anger does not produce the uprightness that God requires. ²¹ So strip yourselves of everything impure and all the evils prevailing around you, and in humble spirit welcome the message which when rooted in your hearts is able to save your souls.

²³ because you have been born anew, not from a germ that perishes but from one that does not perish, by the word of the living and everlasting God.

⁹ I, John, your brother and companion with you in the trouble, the kingdom, and the patient endurance which Jesus gives, found myself on the island called Patmos, for preaching God's message and testifying to Jesus.
